6:02 pm
once you have won eight times, like zach has. he won the masters back in 2007. he wants it badly because it is his home area. troy matteson want its badly because he has been playing well and feels like it is his time to win. i think zach is the guy that is above the worry of not winning. he will be strong to beat. >> and we made the observation that he looks so comfortable in this situation. of all of the players coming down the stretch, zach was the most solid? >> totally. all the way through the second nine. he has won a major championship. he played on the ryder cup and the presidents cup a couple of times. he is an accomplished player. he is used to the extreme player.
6:03 pm
>> 17th green there to the right. what are the keys to playing the 18th? >> well, zach johnson hit the perfect drive into the center of the widest part of the fairway. left himself a long second shot. from the fairway you can control that well. he is hitting his irons well. troy matteson tried to cut it down the corner and get it closer to the green and found closer to the green and found the rough. >> >> by the way a good golf near his own right. scholar who played on the golf team at purdue. >> wonderful program.

>> it is so interesting. we see all of these low numbers. we have had such great finishes here over the years at tpc. this is worth another look. this is why we are in sudden death. rattling home the eagle. just bombing it in from the front of the green. >> this putt here is so smooth and calmly holed. that is not an easy putt. you feel silly if you hit it by six feet on the first putt. the one thing he really has in his favor because he made that really long putt and withstood the pressure he is thinking i have nothing to lose.
6:05 pm
maybe he is a bit more relaxed. trying to win wire to wire as we have a second consecutive tournament ending here. nice ovation for zach johnson. >> we are go to play 18, 18, 16, 17, 18 if we need to. >> he knows sam because zach is on the board for the trourment tournament. he really knows the golf course well. he talked about his close calls

6:07 pm
>> over in stricker's bunker. >> he will be standing in the bunker with both feet but the ball will be below his feet. >> that is a tough shot. >> same bunker where steve stricker was a year ago. able to get a birdie out of that location which is absolutely remarkable. a little less pressure now from a little less pressure now from matteson. oh, man. that is an unbelievable break. that was almost in there way right. hit a tree and ended up a little farther to the left.

from almost the exact spot. look at his stance. >> wow. zach might be a foot or two better off than that. >> in a little better shape. but steve was able to execute. what a shot. just off the green and ended up making that for a bird tow win for the third consecutive year. that is where troy matteson ended up. david feherty, what about this? >> well, i will tell you, that ball was flat out lost had it not caught the trees and come left. dense woods and undergrowth in there. he has 212 yards left. and actually he can maybe get as much as an 8-iron to it. he can get it on the green if he can get a cut on it. but he has to start it at the water on the right edge of the water, left edge of the green. >> he can get it over the trees, david. he doesn't have to thread it
6:11 pm
through. >> no. it is wide open. he will have to cut it and out of the lie. it will be very difficult to make the bold move. >> well, i would go get it in the fairway, avoid the water at all costs and hopefully up and down for the par. last thing you want to do now is to hit it straight in the water. >> and he will be playing first, which makes the decision that much more difficult. >> it is hard to not let your mind race in a playoff. a lot of pressure. it is all on the line. >> i am surprised he hasn't been over to take a look at what zach has left. that would certainly make my mind up with what i had to do. zach is lying very cleanly. he has about 180 yards to the front edge.
6:12 pm
>> just pitch it that way, run it back out to the fairway. that might be easier. what do you think? >> whatever you feel most comfortable with. >> i think that might be easier. going that way low, chase it out and pitch it back. >> you mean just go through this one gap right there? >> yeah. >> ok. >> taking the water out of play. >> i see. >> what he is talking about is going through the window in that area and leaving it short of the water and then pitching with his third. i think that is the smart move. i think trying to hit a full shot from thick rough like that, you just bring the water into play. >> it is still in play even with this shot. >> goodness gracious. look at that. >> i just did not see that shot at all from the lie that he was
6:13 pm
in. if you are going to -- you have to take a whack at it. >> if you are go to lay up, you have to lay well back. >> he took the risk of leaving it in the rough. >> he picked the window perfectly but hit it 50 yards too far. that is exactly what he tried to avoid. temporary theoreticly taking the water out of play. >> zach has 197 to the hole and has to be thinking about the front right portion of the green here, i think. 180 yards to the front. >> he really has nowhere to lay it up, even if he wanted to. front right corner of the green, david. just the safe side of the green.
6:14 pm
>> right side of the green, it is actually the middle of the green from where he is. into the breeze. >> anywhere but left. oh. you are kidding. they are both in the water. >> that went up and out of the hazard. he will be able to drop it right there by the side of the green. >> that is unbelievable. that is why this is the hardest hole on the course today. >> the twilight zone continues. >> just a little bit too much right to left spin. perfect distance. >> another 4-5 feet and it would have gone straight. so, both are in the hazard on the first hole of sudden death. >> well, the first player to play if he hits a good shot you
6:15 pm
can say has the advantage here. troy matteson will drop it. two club lengths from the hazard line. he will be dropping three, hitting his fourth. the advantage will be zach. david said he will be dropping just off the edge of the green. he just has a chip and a putt for his five. red line is the lateral hazard running down the side of the hole. not a water hazard, which is a yellow stake. he has a two-club length drop and it is a penalty. >> the two pga tour rules officials right there. >> they have been around a long
6:16 pm
while. they have to make sure that both players will do the right thing. there is nothing there to trip them up. just helping them make the correct decision. this must be 20 yards short of the green and the flag is 40 yards back. a 55-60 yard approach. >> from where he dropped it, from the fairway you play the low stun and run. i think he has to think about throwing it in a little higher, to the right of the flag and let it take the break and run out. >> 60 yards away. >> the tricky part about this shot is not only the contact
6:17 pm
that you make with the ball on the shot that dictates the amount of spin, but if you land it 30 feet short of the hole you might get that extra grab. if you try to get it too close it is easy to hit it off of the back of the green. so, it is not an easy pitch. >> in taking the stroll, there might be settling of the nerves. >> he has both of the sand wedges there, weak and strong. >> doesn't want to land it too >> doesn't want to land it too hot.
6:18 pm
>> this is a nice effort. >> it is pretty good. 12-15 feet downhill from there. so, he will have that for a five. >> you think advantage to zach johnson? >> yes. especially if he gets two club lengths up to a flat lie that will make a big difference. >> yep. unless the ball takes a really honory bounce backwards. this is interesting.
6:19 pm
whether it interferes with his stance or line of his intended swing. >> from his nearest point of relief. there is his nearest point. he gets a club length from there. as long as it hits within these two tees it can go right another club length as long as it is not near the hole. >> landed on his tee. >> there is something i don't think i ever have seen. that also hit the tee. is that part of his equipment?
6:20 pm
we are talking about the tournament director here. >> are you sure? how about that three in a row. that is unbelievable >> he was trying to get it a little farther behind. >> they are just trying to determine whether or not it is closer to the hole. >> i don't think i have ever seen so many drops. the ball was in play. it landed well. >> ok. >> that is amazing how things like that happen. just at the strangest times. that would have been a much, much easier chip to control the spin had that ball rolled three
6:21 pm
inches right into the shorter grass. >> actually that tee was deemed to be outside of the clun length. so, that is why he redropped it so many times. landing on the tee, not the fact that it hit his tee but the fact that it was outside of the one club length that he had. >> now fourth shot for zach johnson. you would think that this would get up there inside 4-5 feet. he will have a much easier putt, you would think. troy matteson's putt is very difficult. >> 36 yards away.
6:22 pm
>> ball really took off. >> did he really? did he mean to hit it that low? >> no. just coming from that thicker rough made a big difference there. >> you know, that was a very straight faced club. now he will be putting first from just off of the edge. >> he played that with an 8-iron, which zach will do. you will seldom see players do that. the last player that i can remember that hit the shot a lot was roy floyd. >> ray hit a 4-iron if he could. he never putted, did he. an inch off of the green. >> first hole of sudden death. >> there has been nothing sudden about it.

6:24 pm
seemingly struggling with the enormity of the moment here. it is not what i was expecting, i must say. it just shows how much it means to him. >> i tell you, i am struggling with what is go to happen next. supposed to have some idea. >> so, matteson knows that this is for the win. he really has some second chances here. he made the eagle to get to 20-under at 17. a solid putt from six feet to force the playoff. put it in the water and watched zach put it in the water. zach seemed to have the advantage. this is 15'11" away. >> just a hint of left to right, and quick.
6:25 pm
same thing. >> the exact same line. i think this is the right thing as well. troy matteson is actually inside the ball of zach johnson, so he will finish out. >> so, if they have to they will go back to the tee at 18. if they are still tied they will go to the par 3, 16th. >> wow. take a deep breath. how about that. a double bogey. >> and you are still in it. >> you might still win. zach has a longer putt than that left for his double. boy, you rarely see that. he thought his chance was gone when he hit his second into the water. >> last time we had a playoff
