hello, i'm bruce johnson. if you are riding metro for the morning rush you should know there have been problems this weekend. twice in less than 12 hours metro was forced to shut the entire system down. trains on all five lines had to be stopped with passengers on board above and below ground. metro officials point to a computer that went dark making it impossible to see the trains

at central control. sursurae chen has been looking ahead. >> reporter: 105 miles of line came to a complete stop on metro. the screens in prince george's county went dark for roughly 40 minutes. >> it was a long ride. oh god, it was kind of terrible. >> reporter: randy duncan is hoping there's not a repeat of his ride after he was stuck. >> took me three hours to make it home, from 12:00, i didn't make it home until about 3:00. >> reporter: he says the train operator did communicate to passengers there was a computer problem. >> when it did finally get to move we had to get off the train, go to another stop, and actually catch shuttle buses. >> reporter: for the second time this weekend the moving map that shows the location of each train malfunctioned. the first glitch on saturday afternoon forced the trains to stop and be directed to the

nearest station. the second incident on sunday morning caused only a brief stall before the trains could operate at reduced speeds. technicians are watching to make sure another glitch doesn't happen. in both cases they say the problem was resolved by rebooting the system. >> realistically, stuff happens, but you've just got to hope that everything is okay. >> reporter: some d.c. council members are putting some heat on the transit agency. >> it's very disturbing, and i don't recall that this has ever happened before. customers have a right to reliability, so the kind of glitch that happens works against people wanting to use metro and that's a bad thing. >> reporter: one council member is also a metro board member. >> we're going to get it to the bottom of it. we're all very frustrated. >> reporter: metro says there was no power outage, and the system which indicates the proper distance between trains

remained operational but metro still doesn't know why this happened so the transit authority said they will have extra staff at key locations during the morning commute to respond quickly if this happens again. sur arks chen, 9news now. >> metro declined our request for a live interview but a spokesperson said there had been no system shutdowns today. when did d.c. mayor vincent gray first hear that a shadow campaign was needed and funded to help him win over fenty? the january 10th meeting this year with a campaign fund- raiser, now convicted felon, in the spotlight. jeannie clark harris is awaiting sentencing after admitting her role in the shadow campaign that poured

nearly $654,000 into the vincent gray effort. sources confirm the money came from wealthy businessman jeff thompson. both harris and mayor gray have confirmed to different associates they met on january 10th to discuss just what to do with vouchers that remained from the shadow campaign. harris wanted the invoices somehow absorbed by the official vincent gray campaign. the mayor told associates it was his first knowledge that a shadow campaign even existed. he refused to answer questions from reporters as to when he first knew. >> i talked about those things that i can. those that i can't, i have said. that. >> reporter: mayor gray tells associates that he refused to allow his official campaign to absorb the illegal vouchers and instead contacted his attorney. we have not been able to confirm what attorney robert bennett did with that information. if it was passed on to federal prosecutors it could save the

mayor's job. d.c. council chairman phil mendelson. >> we're in a political environment, and the public wants to understand what's going on. they want an explanation. >> reporter: mendelson refuses to join three other council members who are calling on gray to resign because of the activities. another council member said gray should step down now. >> the u.s. attorney said that we had a tainted election. there was election fraud. and in my mind, when there's been cheating in an election, there is a whole question about legitimacy. >> reporter: legal observers say if mayor gray knew about the shadow campaign before the 2010 election, if he conspired in that january 2012 meeting with harris to hide the invoices, mayor gray could be looking at charges. a high ranking official from the gray campaign tells 9news now it's hard to imagine the mayor did not know about that shadow campaign.

the official could not be named and may still be a target. lots of people on both sides of this investigation believe that a man by the name of vernon hawkins can provide some answers. sources say hawkins was field operations manager for the shadow campaign. he's a longtime gray associate. he's also worked with jeannie clark harris and jeff thompson on many get-out-the-vote efforts. hawkins has been very ill. elsewhere, an arlington man is hospitalized after being attacked by two pit bulls while his son looked on. it happened this afternoon near walter reed drive in south oakland streets. the 40-year-old man was getting out of his truck when the dogs pounced on him. a neighbor called 911. police found the dogs at a nearby town house. one of the dogs charged the police officer and the officer shot the animal. the other dog was captured and taken to the animal welfare

league in arlington. we're told the victim suffered bites to both arms. an attempted armed robbery this morning turned into a terrible car accident. as matt jablo tells us the search is on for the masked gunman what started the tragic series of events. >> reporter: the call came in to prince george's county police just after midnight. 12:19, to be exact. a combination armed robbery/fatal pedestrian accident. here's tub usual story, according to cops. it all began when several people in this car were approached by at least two men armed with guns in the 1200 block of oat street in fairmont heights. according to police the suspects told the people inside the car to get out and lie on the ground. one of the people inside the car did just that but the driver who police described as startled accidentally stepped on the gas and drove over the passenger on the ground, killing him. the suspect then fled the scene and at last report was still on

the loose. police have not said if anything was taken from the victims. should you have any information about the suspect in the case, most importantly, of course, who they are or where they are, you're asked to call crime solvers at 1-866-411-tips. matt jablo, 9news now. another search continues in prince george's county tonight for a suspect who shot a man in a crowded apartment complex in langley. officers were called to an apartment building in the 1400 block of canawah street yesterday. the victim, an adult male, had been shot to death. police say there were a lot of people in the area at the time of that shooting. they're hoping somebody will come forward with information about the case. police are also looking for the hit-and-run driver involved in a fatal pedestrian collision in langley park. investigators say the woman was not in a crosswalk when she tried to make her way across busy university boulevard at

rigs road. she was struck by a flat bed truck that was pulling out of a parking lot. that driver stopped but moments later the victim was struck by another vehicle. police say it was an older model four-door toyota. the driver of that car left the scene. the woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. a double shooting in he will ellicott city in a nail and hair care salon. police say the estranged boyfriend of 34-year-old lan phan shot the woman. police are looking for tuan minh pham of beltsville. somebody with illegal fireworks is being blamed for causing a fire that did some

$70,000 worth of damage in gaithersburg last night. officials found the garage on fire. investigators want to remind everybody that all fireworks are illegal in montgomery county. fire investigators say a turkey fryer left too close to a house is blamed for a fire that destroyed this glendale, maryland, residence. one firefighter was treated for a heat-related illness while battling the blaze. firefighters were dispatched around 3:00 this afternoon. the fire burned one side of the house and extended up to the attic and roof. damage estimated at $75,000. the home was unoccupied. still to come on 9news now this sunday night, a recall for a popular suv. we are going to have the details. also, a political war of words on the sunday talk shows over mitt romney's time at bain capital. we're going to have that story. warm and sticky tonight as

bike trails, and pedestrian crossings. if you bought a new ford escape, ford motor company is recalling more than 8,000 of the 2013 escape suv's to fix carpet padding that could interfere with the vehicle's brakes. the company says the carpet padding could cause drivers to hit the side of the brake pedal when switching from the accelerator. if you bought a 2013 escape take it back to the dealer where the problem can be fixed free of charge. the average cost of a gallon of gasoline has dropped. the lundberg survey puts the average price at $3.41. analysts say oil prices have been trending upward, and that will only mean an end to the declining gas prices. new york's popular south side seaport reopened today to lots of tourists. the three-alarm fire had engulfed part of the building. engineers checked out remaining

buildings. saturday's fire started on the east river and sent plumes of black smoke over the manhattan skyline. no injuries, and the shops and restaurants escaped damage. faulty wiring is blamed for that fire. president barack obama says he won't apologize to mitt romney over an aid's comment about the republican candidate's time at bain capital. the two sides took to the airwaves sunday morning to cushion on romney's time at the private equity firm that he funded. drew levinson has the details tonight. >> reporter: president obama says his campaign will not apologize for saying mitt romney outsourced jobs while running bain capital. in an interview with a virginia beach television station, the president said, mr. romney claims he's mr. fix it for the economy because of his business experience, so i think voters entirely, legitimately, want to know what is exactly his business experience. mitt romney says he wasn't even at bain when the outsourcing

>> pepco is going to hate this, but a little bit of rain? >> i think we're in the clear when it comes to stormy stuff. we did have a couple of pops. these have been very scattered in nature. most of us just got some much needed rain. looks like we're going to be fairly good for today. our wake-up weather will have a few showers at 5:00, 6:00, but through midmorning we heat up quickly. out of those 70s by 8:00 a.m. into, the 80s by 9:00 a.m. so sticky and steamy tonight

and a muggy start to monday morning. the radar loop shows how much moisture came moving through. right now doppler 9000 is looking good. we did have a little bit of steady rain an hour ago. all that has turned into more gentle rain, and i think overnight most of us should be pretty good. the view from our michael & son camera not so bad. again, it is on the steamy side with the humidity very high. it's feeling more lake 85 degrees although the current temperature at reagan national only 81. we're down to a cool 76 for springfield. rockville middle 70s. most of us will settle into the upper 60s, lower 70s overnight. so the strong storms that were a problem will allow a pop or two prior to sunrise. then as we head into the work week we're going to keep it

warm and muggy. heating up to the 90s for monday, near triple-digit heat for tuesday, then wednesday and thursday, i'm tracking another system, but we're going to fire up some thunderstorms before we get to that point. what you need to know for tonight, partly cloudy skies, the showers will eventually end and most of us should sit right around lower cents inside the beltway. tomorrow looks pretty good. partly cloudy to partly sunny by late afternoon. it will be hot, and with the summertime pattern he we can't rule out a pop of a shower or thunderstorm late in the afternoon for tomorrow as well. so tomorrow's highs will be warm again. we will get up into the middle 90s inside the beltway. we'll see some of those lower 90s a little bit further to the north and off to the west. it will be a little cloudy through much of the morning rush. then through midmorning, late morning, we'll start to see some clearing, a little bit of sunshine comes through to heat us up, but by late afternoon, after your lunch break, say 2:00, 3:00, a round of showers

and possibly even a storm popping on through. and then we're nicely in the clear monday afternoon and evening and tuesday is looking really good. the extended forecast is going to keep us on the warm side. again, these temperatures are going to be very warm getting up to near 95 tomorrow. code yellow for the next three days. that means that we do have the opportunity for that late day shower and storm on monday and on wednesday. with our seven-day forecast, however, there is some relief in sight, although we flirt with those triple digits by the time we get to tuesday. wednesday into thursday will stir up the storms, but behind it 87, 88 degrees is going to feel awfully g. >> thanks a lot. bad weather is making rescue efforts difficult this weekend in british columbia where four people are still missing after a massive landslide. authorities have found the top floor of the house. they have not found the
