evacuated from trains at dupont circle around 8:30 this morning. metro says a train broke down and that caused a massive back-up at the station, which is only operating with one entrance due to escalator repairs. everyone got out safely, but passengers were left frustrated and late for work. >> it smelled kind of like burnt rubber and smoke. in the station there is not a lot of ventilation coming through and it was so packed. it took another ten minutes to get us all out of there. >> it was like a wall of people and luckily no one panicked, no one pushed. but you had that sense of you are in a packed station, the smoke, and it was scary. >> it is unclear why the train broke down and there is no word from metro about saturday's computer glitchs. today the montgomery planning board will hear a proposal on a light rail

service for chevy chase lake. the line would run through the lake and unite 380 acres between east west highway and jones bridge road. planners say the rail service would unclog traffic along connecticut avenue. the proposal also calls for the creation of a new town center with highrise, office and residential buildings. and also a new park, playground, bike trails and pedestrian crossings. president obama continues to build his argument that mitt romney sent jobs overseas as the head of a private equity firm. and now mitt romney is pushing back. danielle nottingham explains why romney wants the president to drop what he calls negative and false charges. >> reporter: president obama is back on the campaign trail, heading to the battleground state of ohio with a stop in cincinnati. the president is expected to continue his attacks on mitt

driver became frightened, took off and accidentally ran over the passenger on the ground, killing him. the two gunmen got away. if you have any information about this crime, please call police at 1-866-411-tips. an arlington man is recovering after being attacked by two pit bulls. his son saw what happened in front of him yesterday afternoon. it happened near walter reed drive in south oakland street. the 40-year-old man was getting out of his truck when the dogs jumped him. a neighbor called 911 after hearing the man's son scream for help. police found the dogs in a nearby town house. one of the dogs as shot and killed after it charged a police officer. the other dog was captured and taken to the animal welfare league of arlington. we are told that the man suffered bites to both arms. officials have declared the

crisis in syria a civil war. randall pinkston shows us why residents caught in the cross fire say the violence is getting worse. >> reporter: intense gunfire can be heard across damascus in new video posted online from syria. residents say it is the worst fighting since the uprising against president assad began 17 months ago. assad's forces controlled the capital but residents are battling his troops in the suburbs. the international red cross classifies the escalating conflict as a civil war, which means war crime prosecution's could follow. in the area residents are still mourning after dozens were reportedly killed last night. united nations observers say syrian troops with heavy weapons went door-to-door. >> we have seen a number of burned out buildings and

remnants of killing bullet holes, et cetera. >> reporter: the syrian government insists the military is not targeting civilians, and denies using tanks and helicopters. randall pinkston, cbs news. hollywood is mourning the death of an actress whose career spanned more than half a century. stage and screen star celeste holmes found fame on broadway in oklahoma and she won an oscar in 1947 for her portrayal of a lonely secretary in gentlemen's agreement. holmes appeared in another son returns and the king and i. she fell ill a couple of weeks ago after a fire occurred in the manhattan apartment building where she lived. celeste holmes was 95 years old

the homeless educates and gives legal aid to the poor. so today i'm saluting this nonprofit organization. >> i was given a letter of termination by the director because i had overstayed my time. >> reporter: in 2002 lajuan brooks and her three children were living in an emergency shelter. after one year the working mother faced being homeless again because her time at the shelter had run out. but she could not afford to move. >> i didn't know what my rights were as a client of the shelter or what steps were supposed to be taken. >> reporter: the working mother needed legal advice and she needed it for free. she learned about the washington legal clinic for the homeless. >> i was impressed. i didn't know there were attorneys out there specifically working with clients no my position. >> reporter: brooks visited one of the clinic's seven intake centers and she got a lawyer. >> without a lawyer's intervention her family would have been back out on the
