first of all georgetown pike is blocked completely west of walker road in great falls due to a fallen tree from yesterday afternoon and you might just want to use route 7 as your alternate route. there's a second tree that fell and fairfax crews are trying to deal with that as well. route 7 will take a major hit because of this so maybe head out the door a tiny bit early. if you're coming in from the west other than that no problems to report on 66 coming in from manassas to fairfax. we'll take a live look outside in georgetown. on the westbound side of m street right here at wisconsin avenue, only that single left lane is getting by. a water main break right here in georgetown. so be aware of that. later in the morning it could affect traffic. back to the maps this time to southern maryland. no issues on any of those major corridors. a live look outside coming in on 95 at route 198. volumes are light. i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic. police are investigating a horrible accident that happened at the end of last night's rush hour. >> as drivers were moving slowly up georgetown pike, a

huge tree toppled over and then crushed a car with a man inside. delia goncalves joins us live from the scene. the pictures we've seen so far are just astonishing. >> reporter: oh, it's heartbreaking. without warning this tree just fell. it is just a terrible situation. this block, the 9900 block of georgetown pike still remains closed. we're talking more than ten hours later. take a look. crews are here. they are trying to remove a second tree in the area that they believe is damaged and could fall as well. we can't shiny lights on the tree to show -- shine any lights on the tree to show you because we're told that would hurt the operation that is going on right now. we are seeing the crews taking down the limbs but the other tree fell without warning. it was around 6:30 yesterday evening. traffic as usual was backed up on georgetown pike when the

massive tree fell crashing down on a car in the westbound lane. the firehouse is just steps away. firefighters responded immediately to the scene but their rescue operation quickly turned into a recovery as they discovered the weight of this 100-foot tall 10 to 12 ton tree made it impossible for anyone to survive. >> i don't see how westbound 193 person cannot be sitting in traffic right here at this time of day. >> i came up probably about 30 seconds right after it happened and it was -- we didn't really know what was going on. it was kind of a chaotic situation because there were -- there was another car that had limbs on it that was right across the street. so that's the first thing we saw. when we saw the -- then we saw the tree. >> reporter: we know the victim is an adult male and he is the only person who was in that car at the time.

the car registered it seems to a company. however, no one has been identified in this tragic accident here in georgetown pike. an arborist is telling us the tree is -- the tree was about 200 years old. i'll have details on exactly where it fell coming up at 5:30. mike, jess, back to you. police are trying to determine the motive behind a deadly domestic shooting in waldorf, maryland. investigators say 33-year-old shea camya proctor shot ant wounded -- and wounded his mother and stepfather yesterday morning. he then shot and killed himself. january nice proctor willis and her husband, jeff, are in the hospital with serious gunshot wounds. a 14-year-old boy is recovering after getting his hand stuck in a metro escalator. this was last night at the smithsonian station. we're told the teenager had his flip-flops on and one of them got stuck at the bottom of the

escalator. while he was reaching down to free the sandal, his hand got caught. rescuers were able to get him free in about 30 minutes. well, high above the streets of tysons corner metro celebrated a milestone yesterday. the final segment of the aerial guideway is now in place. that's the concrete platform that gets installed before they can lay down the metal track. this will carry the train over the beltway and through tysons corner and it's part of phase one of the new silver line which opens late next year. four stations are planned for the tysons corner area. phase one runs from falls church to reston. well, the district is planning to expand a program that links the price of parking to the demand for the spaces. for example, on most days the meters around nationals park charge a dollar an hour. game days, however, the prices jump to $8 an hour. that program is expected to expand from south capitol street to the h street corridor. meters there would go from 75 cents to $2 an hour in the evening. it's another week of high

temperatures. that is bad news for area farmers. crops like corn cannot survive in this searing heat. growers in maryland say they can only bring in about a third of the crops they were expecting to. >> the latest is june 25. we probably had as much potential as we've ever had for a big crop. just in the last three weeks we really took a turn for the worst. >> the heat wave and the lack of rain means farmers need to spend a lot of money just trying to keep the crops watered which helps keep produce like sweet corn on the grocery shelves. maryland's agriculture department said consumers will not see a decline in the quality of the product although the quantity can be impacted. i'm watching your money. wall street is hoping to extend the rally into a second day but that could be a problem. asian markets headed lower overnight so trading in europe is higher today. checking the numbers from here at home, the dow starts today at 12,805. it climbed 78 points in trading yesterday.

nasdaq was up by 13 and the s&p 500 was higher by 10 points. the chief compliance officer of the big international big hsbc says he's stepping down from that position. this after an investigation found that laxed controls allowed mexican drug cartels to launder billions of dollars through the bank's operation. that compliance officer and other executives got grilled by senators yesterday during a hearing on the matter. the iphone is going on a diet to keep customers from jumping ship to other phones. industry insiders say the next iphone is currently being manufactured by asian component makers. it will use a new technology that makes the smartphone screens thinner. samsung products have thinner screens than the current iphone. the new technology also said to improve the phone's image quality. reports that apple will increase the iphone screen size proved true. the slimmer screens could keep the new iphones from being heavier than the current models. don't they say you can never be

>> a rally to support the mayor starts at 11:00 this morning at the wilson building after a former campaign aide admitted to helping run a shadow campaign that netted more than $650,000. three city council members have since called on mayor gray to resign. now some district ministers say they're behind gray and they want him to stick to his guns and not resign. >> there's no need to rush to judgment. there's an investigation going on. the city has been already through trauma and drama with the resignation of two city councils. and it's the role of elected leadership at this point to be sober, reflective, to help unify the city. >> disk mayor gray's office says he -- d.c. mayor gray's office says he will not be attending today's rally. they are still looking into more key players in the 2010 campaign. fellow commuters watched in horror as a fallen tree crushed a driver. the deadly accident unfolded toward the end of last evening's commute.

reporter delia goncalves is live in great falls with more on what's been happening there overnight. such a horrible story, delia. >> reporter: it is a really sad story. you really feel for that family and the drivers who witnessed all of this happening without any indication that this tree would fall. it just collapsed and it was a horrible situation. crews have been here overnight. they shut down the block because they're doing this. they are now trying to remove a second tree in the area that they believe is also in danger of falling. you can see that there's someone perched up top with a chainsaw and slowly taking off limbs and piece by piece cutting that tree down. hopefully their efforts today will prevent another tragedy. around 6:30 yesterday evening, a car was stuck in traffic on the 9900 block of georgetown pike when a 100-foot tall 12- ton tree collapsed instantly crushing the car and

unidentified adult male driver who was inside. >> it didn't really make a big noise. it just went down on the car and you heard it as it was going down. >> we've had events like this in the county in the past. they're usually associated with severe wind events, most recently with the torrential storm that came through we had incidents similar to this. but it's uncommon for this to happen with no warning whatsoever. >> reporter: you can hear the chainsaws in the background as they continue to saw away and cut down that tree and hopefully reopen the road for the morning commute and then they will shut it back down as they continue their efforts to remove this tree that could be in danger of falling as well. in regard to the tree that did fall yesterday, ashists tell us that -- arborists tell us that tree, 200 years old. it was severely damaged inside. absolutely hollow inside when it fell so it had been deteriorating for sometime and unfortunately yesterday was just a day that it fell.

we will have much more on the story coming up at 6:00 as crews continue to try to make this area safe and try to take down these dangerous trees and prevent another tragedy. back to you. >> thanks, delia. delia goncalves live in great falls this morning. police in arlington are looking for people who saw a man who was struck and killed by a car. video from the metro bus shows passengers looking at the man as they get on board. it happened on a dark street early june 30 just hours after the mass -- [ inaudible ] the car hit edgar aguilar where the light was out. they hope a passenger will contact them with more information. now a controversy over the lengthy power outages following last month's derecho storm. they are pushing for martin o'malley to fire the entire public service commission. hans reimer has started an

online petition. he admits this is one of the worst storms yet but points out long outages after previous storms. so far more than 3200 people have signed his petition online. the talks over gambling in maryland shift to baltimore today. that's where the governor is going to meet with city lawmakers there. yesterday he met with house speaker michael bush and state senate majority leader mike miller. he could call for a special session of the general assembly to talk about this more. that's where they would consider expanding gambling in the state including table games and possibly adding a sixth cuisine foe at a site in prince george's county. the time is 5:35. i'm watching your money and your identity. we hear about identity theft on a regular basis, so much so, you may be tuning that information out, but you really need to pay attention because you could stand to lose cold hard cash. so how do you know your identity has been stolen? daily finance gives us these

five red flags. number one, your crazy card gets declined for an unknown reason. if this happens you to, it could be a sign your account has been hacked. check your account immediately. take action immediately. number two, mystery charges appear on your statement. these purchases might be really small amounts but that could mean bigger problems if you don't take action. call that credit card company right away, even if this is for a very small charge. number three, your friends receive e-mails from your e- mail address you never sent. not only should you watch out for unusual activity in your financial accounts but you also need to watch your e-mail and other social media accounts. if your account has been hacked, make sure to immediately change your password. number four, your monthly billing statements stop showing up. this is a major red flag for identity theft. you can keep a schedule of what you want to expect to receive in terms of your major bills. if you don't get one of those bills, touch base with your bank issuer or service provider. and number five, your credit
