beltway. and most of the d.c. metro area. the sun is rising. temperatures are in the 80s right now in downtown. 87 will be the temperature by 9:00. by noon 96 and by 5:00 we do see scattered showers and storms arriving. some of the storms could be strong or severe. currently lower 80s in downtown. mid-70s in gaithersburg. 73 in winchester. culpeper, good morning you to. you're at 72 degrees. check out your highs for today. maybe flirting with some 100s and some records. 98 in downtown. 100 for manassas. upper 90s near fredricksburg and gaithersburg. you should top out in the mid- upper 90s as well. here's a look at your time saver traffic with monika samtani. good morning, monika. >> good morning. it's relatively light on our major thoroughfares. the beltway is looking good. all the overnight construction has been cleared up i'm happy to say. there is accident cleanup going on in gaithersburg where shady grove road was blocked between 355 and i-370. i'll show what you it looks like from sky 9. i've been told

they are reopening the lanes there on shady grove road. there was a multivehicle accident there. it's been reopened. here's 270 i believe in that area of gaithersburg. let's go back over to our maps. this time we'll head over to the south side of town. looking good on 95 out of dale city. no real delays to report into woodbridge. still bunching up in springfield and then on 395 as well in landmark. we'll take a live look in springfield on the northbound side of i-95. again just those brake lights but all the lanes are open heading up to the beltway and on to 395. i'll be back with more coming up in my next report in a few minutes. back to you guys. it's a story that can best be described as a horrible accident. a man is killed when a tree falls on his car. >> this tree is huge. the accident is still having an impact on traffic this morning. the tree fell last night in great falls, virginia along georgetown pike near walker road. delia goncalves is live there this morning with this.

just awful. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike, jess. it really is a terrible story and indeed a tragedy here in great falls. crews have been working all through the night and the road remains closed. we're here in the 9900 block of georgetown pike. crews are still here trying to remove a tree here. this is a second tree in the. they also believe this -- in the area. they also believe this tree is damaged and they say if t is in danger -- say it is in danger of falling. drivers witnessed a 100-foot tall tree collapse suddenly and crush a car stuck in rush hour bumper-to-bumper traffic. the tree was hollow inside indicating it was severely damaged. the accident happened just steps from the firehouse. crews responded immediately quickly disoampg, though, no one could survive the impact -- discovering, though, no one could survive the impact of that tree. >> the tree had obviously deteriorating from a hole in

the bottom. unfortunately the person in that car, it was their time. it's just sad. >> very traumatizing to see it. it was just shocking to see a tree fall like this. >> reporter: crews remain here on the scene hoping to get as much work done so they can reopen the roads for rush hour traffic and then shut that road back down again so they continue the work to remove this large tree nearly 100 feet tall as well. we're told maybe 10 to 12 feet in diameter. so it is a large tree that they are just chopping away at and trying to remove this morning. that male driver who was killed yesterday has still not been identified. mike, back to you. >> wow. delia goncalves live in great falls, virginia this morning. thanks, delia. this is similar to another deadly incident from three years ago. 40-year-old kelly murray and her 7-year-old daughter slone were killed on connecticut avenue in chevy chase, maryland. a tree branch knocked loose by

a thunderstorm earlier fell on top of the family's minivan. this happened back in june of 2009 and six other children in the car were hurt. in the wake of a 9 wants you to know investigation, the gsa is cutting bonuses for 85% of its high ranking officials. we've learned that the organizers of the now infamous las vegas conference were among gsa employees who received thousands of dollars in bonuses. 9news uncovered former gsa executive jeffrey nealy paid nearly $10,000 in bonuses. after officials learned of the $823,000 trip but it doesn't stop there. we also found out that 67 high ranking gsa officials are splitting more than half a million dollars in bonuses. the food and drug administration has just approved a new antiobesity drug. qsymia for overweight people who have diabetes or high

cholesterol. the potomac nationals are teaming up with prince william county to build a new ballpark and stay right here in our region. the team made the announcement yesterday. it will build a stadium just east of i-95 near opitz boulevard in richmond next to the wegmans. it will seat as many as 7,000 people, including 12 sky boxes that could be used in the wintertime for other events. prince william board of supervisors chairman cory stewart says this area known as stone bridge will be an economic engine for the county. >> this is already becoming an entertainment hub on i-95 attracting residents not just from east of prince william county and the other parts of prince william but from northern stafford and especially from southern fairfax and even up into arlington and alexandria. >> the stadium is going to include a new park and ride lot as well and should be open by 2014. the time right now 16:05. i -- is 6:05.

i'm watching your money. you pay your mortgage and other bills on time. you have a pretty good idea how much debt you're carrying and you know how much you're bringing in but do you know what your credit score is? that can be hard to get a handle on until now. there's a new app debuting today and it's free. credit karma.com's app can be found in the apple app store. it's the first and only way to get a free credit score and free credit monitoring on the go. other features include notifications when certain events are recorded in your credit report and a credit record card which tells you about factors affecting your credit score. i downloaded it this morning and i miss add credit card bill last month. not so good. nobody's perfect. one of the best ways to keep track of your credit and possible identity theft is to check your credit report. the three companies are required by law to give you your report free but you have to ask for it.

good morning. here's your forecast for today. grab the umbrella just in case as we do see a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. it will be very hot and humid once again. temperatures in the mid-90s by lunch time. by 5:00 we'll top out in the upper 90s, close to 100 degrees. on the southbound side of i- 270 taking a live look from our sky 9 at father hurley boulevard with a disabled truck on the shoulder there. really not catching much attention and things look good as you head down to the point where the lanes divide. i'll have more on traffic coming up once again in a few minutes. back to you, jess. >> thanks, monika. just about 6:12 on this wednesday morning. here are the stories making news now. the united nations security council will vote on a resolution today calling for an end to syria's civil war.

it's been raging for 17 months and has left thousands dead. reports out of syria show violence there has been on the rise this week. the ncaa is considering penalties against the penn state program. it might even shut down the program in the wake of the sex abuse scandal. they're investigating whether or not penn state lost control of its athletic program. the washington national cathedral will hold a blessing of part of the aids memorial quilt. it begins this afternoon at 1:00. the cathedral last held a celebration of the quilt back in 1996. in just a few hours, president obama is going to meet with the secretary of agriculture. >> they'll be talking about how to respond to the draught, the heat and the dry weather that is causing problems for farmers, including those in maryland. >> alex demetrick reports on the impact when it comes to the eastern shore. >> reporter: normal than normal -- lower than normal rainfall hurts but heat is affecting corn. >> i've never seen it go

downhill so fast. >> reporter: farmers say they will ebring in a third of the corn crop hoped for because of heat waves. >> even as late as june 25 we probably had as much potential as we've ever had for a big crop. and just in the last three weeks we've really took a turn for the worst. >> heat and lack of rain are not a good combination for agriculture. >> reporter: that means to keep quality produce like this on the shelf, farmers must spend money to water crops. irrigating hurts the bottom line but without it? >> well, we've -- we'd have nothing. we literally would have no crop at all. >> reporter: so watering keeps the sweet corn coming but vast amounts of commodity crops like field corn are baking in the field. >> when it's as hot as it's been, then you start affecting pollination and quality. >> reporter: and that's what's stunting corn on the shore. >> this is probably going to be the best ear in the field. it doesn't look too bad but that's probably what we're

hoping for, even a little better. but that's what we're hoping for and that's what we'll end up with. the corn crop is pretty much double. it is what it is and we've got what we've got. >> maryland's department of agriculture says we won't see a drop in the quality of produce so much. there will just be less of it. if you're looking for a way to think cool today, head to google maps and search antarctica. here's why. you'll end up seeing a picture like this. google maps has added street view pictures to the south pole. the idea is to teach people about the exploration of antarctica which will have its 100th anniversary next year. the temperature right now at the south pole in case you're wondering, 75 degrees below zero. what do you think about that? >> that's just too cold. >> maybe you'll see some polar bears. >> that would be kind of cool or maybe some penguins. we're talking about another day of extreme heat. the humidity yesterday was high but it's going to be even

street bridge. you're going to be fine. we'll take a live look from our vdot camera right now. looking good across the bridge span. you might hit the brakes a time or for as you leave landmark toward seminary road. a quick live look in georgetown as well where there was a water main break from yesterday. still affecting westbound m street here at wisconsin avenue. only the left lane is going to get you through. i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic but right now i do have a commuter alert. metro wants you to stay hydrated today. it will allow customers to carry water bottles and drink water on the subway on board buses and inside metro stations. it's asking you to make sure you find a trash can for your bottle when it's double. remember, this is just -- it's done. remember, this is just for water, not for ice coffee on the train. darn it. i wish i could. metro reminds you they may have to slow down the trains because of the heat. they had to do that yesterday. hot weather can cause a heat kink in the rail. in other words, the tracks buckle and it happened on the

6:22. getting ready for another hot and steamy day. just one more day of it. after that we'll see changes come this way. here's a look at the heat advisory starting at 11:00 going till 9:00 p.m. for the entire d.c. metro area. a live look outside the capitol. we're seeing lots of -- plenty of sun out there. temperature right now 80 degrees. we'll get up into the mid and upper 90s by late this afternoon with scattered showers and storms. back to you. after last night's game, if you didn't catch this, you need to watch the highlights. nationals davey johnson says that is my kind of ballgame. >> tyler moore says that's why you come to the ballpark. a crazy final to innings between the nats and the mets. >> nationals up 2-0, top of the 9th, 2-0 for new york. take a look. just clears the right field railing. they reviewed it. it was upheld, nats lead. two on for danny espinoza.

he singles up the middle. that ties the game at 3. the mets score in the top of the 10th. now bryce harper at the plate. he knocks a triple to right. would have been a double but he hustles so much, stretches it into a triple. later in the inning, bases loaded. a wild pitch. ryan zimmerman comes in to score. nationals win a crazy game. the final 5-4. adrenaline rush big time. capitals canceling their annual fan fest. it's usually held in september or october but a labor slowdown is looming between the players and the owners so the team says let's do away with it just in case this year. in a statement the caps say they're hoping to bring it back in 2013. imagine if your boss gave you $23 million and then told you to get out. such is the life of andre blatche. after seven years in washington, he's no longer a wizard. the team bought up his contract for $23 million. it also made him a free agent

>> thanks. >> anybody who has had that knows it's awful. the issue whether to expand gambling in maryland is in the spotlight yet again today. governor martin o'malley will meet with leaders. the governor and legislative leaders did not agree on holding a special session. the hangups? whether to build a casino at national harbor and whether to allow table games. >> we just tried to make an assessment of what we thought where people were in the middle of the summer. came really to no conclusions. but breakfast was delicious. >> lawmakers face an august 20 deadline to pass legislation to get a gambling proposal on the november ballot. d.c. council member vincent orange says he has been cleared in a financial audit of his 2011 campaign. "the washington post" reports orange received a preliminary copy of an office of campaign finance audit of his campaign.

however, he is refusing to release them publicly. orange has been under scrutiny for receiving thousands in contributions from people with ties to two figures linked to mayor vincent gray's shadow campaign. according to the paper, on an -- an ocf spokesman says the audit so far is not complete right now. some d.c. clergy say they are going to stand behind mayor vincent gray, even after a former aide admitted to helping run a shadow campaign. to show their support, the group is holding a rally later this morning at the wilson building. three council members have called for gray to resign amid these allegations of that questionable $650,000 that was contributed to his 2010 campaign. the clergy say d.c. council should think of the citizens first. >> the leadership at this point to be sober, reflective, to help unify the city. >> the mayor does not expect to attend this rally at 11:00 this

morning. a horrific story out of fairfax county this morning. a tree falls suddenly and then lands on a man's car killing him. >> crews are still on the scene this morning investigating. this all began last night along georgetown pike in great falls. our delia goncalves is there live with this story. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. after working through the night, major progress by crews here on georgetown pike. you can see the tree that crews were working on chopping away slowly, that tree has now been removed. it fell around 6:00. so about half an hour ago. let's take a look at sky 9 flying above the area so you can take a look at an aerial view of georgetown pike. you can see that crews are working busily and quickly to remove the tree trunk so they can open this portion of georgetown road back up to traffic following yesterday's tragedy. it was 6:30 yesterday evening, the tail end of the evening commute when a 100-foot tall 12-

ton tree suddenly collapsed. it crushed a car that was stopped in bumper to bumper traffic in the westbound lane. the male driver inside died instantly. an arborist tells us the tree was about 200 years old and was absolutely hollow inside indicating severe decay. >> i think the first thing most people are thinking is they're glad it's not them and that i think the second thing folks are thinking is now what are we going to do about the tree situation. >> we've had events like this in the county in the past. they're usually associated with severe weather events, high winds, most recently with the torrential storm that came through. we had an incident similar to this but it's very uncommon for this to happen with no warning whatsoever. >> reporter: one last look at sky 9, an aerial shot of the 9900 block of georgetown pike as crews work to remove that 100-foot tall tree that they believe was damaged. that is the second tree in the

area that they have claimed -- that they have deemed damaged and they have removed. back out here live, you can see here on the ground a lot of work is being done to clear the area so the road can be reopened to traffic. it had been shut down since yesterday's tragedy and they're hoping to reopen for the morning commute. so some progress here but the question remains, what are arborists and the community going to do about these old trees, many of them here for centuries and some of them decaying. there is a danger of them falling as we saw yesterday. so the conversation continues here in great falls as to what to do about these damaged trees. back to you, jess, mike. >> thanks, delia. it's going to be really expensive to take them out but they've got to do it. delia goncalves live in great falls, virginia, this morning. we've learned the name of the pilot killed in monday night's plane crash in montgomery county. 79-year-old frank schmidt died while doing touch and go

landings. he had been an instructor for 40 years. his student survived the crash and remains in the hospital. campaign 2012 now. presumptive presidential nominee mitt romney is in town this morning. he'll take part in a breakfast reception this morning which will be held at the willard hotel. he will be there with new jersey governor chris newkumetty who is a -- with chris christie who is a supporter. president obama will be holding a fund-raiser. he will be talking about the new stem master teacher program. the goal is to create an elite core of teachers who focus on math and engineering. the price tag? $1 billion. the president is hoping to expand the program to 10,000 teachers over the next four years. the time right now is 6:38. i am watching your money. fed chairman ben bernanke is telling congress find a way to solve the nation's debt problems. he predicts unemployment will stay above 7% through 2014, currently over 8 % right now.

he says it could be worse if congress doesn't find a solution to end -- to the end of tax cuts and the cut in spending coming at the end of this year. >> the congressional budget office has estimated that if the full range of tax increases and spending cuts were allowed to take effect, a scenario widely referred to as the fiscal cliff, a shallowy session would occur next year and one in a quarter million fewer jobs would be created in 2013. these estimates do not incorporate the additional negative effects likely to result from public uncertainty about how these matters will be resolved. >> if we hit that so-called fiscal cliff, it could cost our region hundreds of thousands of jobs. george mason university predicts 2.1 million jobs would be lost at government-related agencies. 450,000 of them would be in our region alone. and it would affect one in five jobs in the district. 40% of our region's economy is tied to the federal government.

welcome back. monika here with your time saver traffic. a couple of things you want to keep in mind for your commute this morning. we've been telling you all morning long about this fallen tree blocking the georgetown pike at walker road in great falls. it fell on top of a car. crews continue to clean that up and investigate at the situation. in fact, i'm going to step out and show you what it looks like live from our sky 9 georgetown pike blocked in great falls. you can see the cones are set up and traffic is being alternated through this area. so you might just want to go ahead and consider using route 7 instead of the georgetown pike and avoid the delays caused by this cleanup in great falls. we'll keep you posted on this situation all morning long. in the meantime let's go back to our map and this time over to the bw parkway and route 50. looking good through cheverly. no problems into the northeast corridor. we're looking good as well on the beltway throughout prince george's county. back to our live pictures, here's 270 at shady grove road. really looking good down to the point where the lanes divide. i'll be back with more traffic
