good morning, anny. 5:00. things are beginning to build up just a bit early this thursday morning but nothing big to worry about. if you're heading in from the west manassas and centreville, everything is final. the lanes are open. no problems through the burke area or annandale on the beltway. we'll take a live look outside at the roosevelt bridge inbound on i-66 and heading into the downtown area. nice and light across the potomac and anacostia river crossings right now. back over to our maps and this time we'll head all the way to the east side of town on route 50 coming in from annapolis or the bay bridge. you're going to be fine all the way inbound through cheverly and the northeast corridor. we'll take a live look outside once again. this is what it looks like at route 50 and the bay bridge. i keep bringing up this shot because it reminds me of going to the beach. in my next report another look at area roads. back to you guys. >> see you in a bit. we begin the hour with the latest on the controversy surrounding d.c. mayor vincent gray. there's a new "washington post" poll out suggesting that most of city residents believe he should resign.

>> the findings of this poll were released just hours after several district ministers rallied outside the wilson building in support of mayor gray. delia goncalves joins us live from outside the wilson building with more. good morning to you, delia. >> reporter: good morning, jessica, mike. these results are pretty telling. i'm sure folks within the administration are taking a very close look at the results, even though mayor gray is steadfast in his commitment that he will serve all four years of his term. cord to the post -- according to the post poll, four out of ten voters who elected him to office now think he should step down. let's take a look at some video shot the other day. obviously the mayor has his supporters as seen in this rally of clergy members outside the wilson building yesterday. "the washington post" poll indicates many are expressing doubts in the mayor's ability to run the city. 48% of african-americans, a huge base for the mayor, now say he should resign.

overall 54% think stepping down is the right thing to do while 37% of voters think he should stay in office. reaction is mixed, even in his home ward of ward 7. let's listen to those folks. >> there's too much against him and everything. every time he keeps fighting, it's like more information comes out about this. so it's not something he could hide. >> i don't believe it. >> reporter: you don't believe it? >> not yet. >> reporter: you think he ought to stay in there? >> yes. >> with all the controversy surrounding him right now, how could he not know what was going on in his campaign? he has these people who are close to him. the buck stops with him. >> i'm just waiting to see what the results are going to be. >> reporter: gray has been asked repeatedly about this case. he has been asked even by council members to make some comments specifically speaking and reassuring the -- speaking to and reassuring the residents of the district of columbia. however, he says and continues

to say this is an ongoing investigation and that he will not comment until things clear up, though three of his campaign aides have now pled guilty to federal charges in connection to the shadow campaign. jeannie harris who funneled the $650,000 in secret cash, she has now admitted and told reporters very outwardly that she had a meeting with the mayor back in january. we'll have much more detail on exactly what the poll says in regards to his support of women -- by women in the city coming up at 5:30. back to you. >> tough situation for mayor gray moving forward. thanks, delia live outside the wilson building intlz maryland police can once again collect d.n.a. samples from people arrested for serious crimes, at least for now. that's because the supreme court justice john roberts has temporarily blocked a maryland court of appeals ruling that had barred the practice. this case centers on the conviction of alonzo king, jr. he was found guilty of a 2003

rape after his d.n.a. was collected following his arrest for assault in 2009. roberts' order will remain in effect till king responds to the state's appeal. he must do that by july 25. the daily cost to drive on the dulles toll road is going up next year. yesterday the metropolitan airports authority released some possible tolerate increases and if it's approved, the cost of driving through the main toll plaza and exit ramp booth would cost you $2k.75 a trip just year, 50 cents more than you pay next year. the increase will just be the start if that one goes through. then the plan calls for another increase to $3.50 in 2014. $4.50 by 2015. a series of public hearings will be held before any final decision is made. the increases would be used to help fund metro's new silver line project. it is 5:05. i am watching your money. another round of better than expected profits could help wall street keep the rally

going. american express, e-bay and i.b.m. are all reporting profits which beats estimates. checking the numbers for wall street, the dow stands this morning at 12,908. it rose 103 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was up by 32 and the s&p 500 was up by 9 points. amazon plans to start charging sales tax in eight additional states in coming years. the website will start with california and pennsylvania in september. amazon already collects sales tax in six states. it's able to charge sales tax in states where it has a physical warehouse or other operations. you may want to make room in your freezer for meat. prices for beef and pork are expected to drop in the coming weeks. farmers are expected to slaughter their herds because it's become too expensive to feed the cattle. a severe drought in the midwest has sent the price of livestock feed soaring. experts say if the drought lasts through the summer, expect higher meat prices by the end of the year. an olympic gold medal just isn't what it used to be.

assad still has not been seen since the bombing at a government building killed three of his top officials. the white house says the bombing shows the situation in syria is deteriorating. there's been fighting in the streets at the capital of damascus. assad's brother-in-law was one of the three killed in the bombing. israel has vowed to get revenge for a bus explosion that killed at least six israelis in bulgaria. the prime minister benjamin netanyahu says iran is behind the bombing. president obama called netanyahu to offer u.s. assistance in finding the people responsible for the bombing. a new cbs news poll shows president obama and mitt romney are in a virtual tie in the race for the white house. more voters believe romney is capable of handling the economy than president obama, but a much larger percentage of voters believe the president will do a better job looking out for the middle class than romney. one in five voters say they may change their mind about who they're going to vote for before november. coming up on 5:11, montgomery county announces

county administrators have been fighting over the future of these buses for years. the. of the union that represents the ride on bus drivers say the county bought about 50 of these buses back in 2007. the total bill for it he says was somewhere in the neighborhood of about $10 billion. just two years after the purchase in 2009, the first case of a self-combusting bus happened. since then including the one on wednesday morning in silver spring, some 13 buses have gone up in flames. >> what you end up having is wires up against very, very hot hydraulic systems which go up in flames or you have brakes that aren't made for the stress they're under. >> reporter: renne says the buses weren't built to be used as often or run as hard as montgomery county transit officials have been ordering. in a statement county executive ike leggett said in part, quote, the bottom line is removing the buses from service is the right thing to do to ensure the safety of the public and our bus drivers.

andrea roane. thanks for joining us. monika will have traffic in a moment but we start with anny and weather first. yesterday we got to 101 setting a new record at dulles. today it will be cooler almost by 10 degrees in a lot of locations but we still see some scattered showers and storms that will come through this way. again some of the strongs could be strong and we'll have to keep an eye to the sky. we're waking up to cloudy skies. i think we'll see partly cloudy conditions by 9:00. 83 degrees. by noon we have a chance for a shower and storm. temperatures around 89. then we'll top out in the lower 90s. some places could get to near mid-90s. then we'll see some scattered showers and storms come through late this afternoon and early this evening. by 6:00 temperatures will be around 89 degrees. so you will want your umbrellas just in case. there are some areas of fog once again this morning. in the beltway things are just final. visibility no problem. but in stafford now down to 5 miles. also out to the northwest of

boulevard. i'll be back with more in a few minutes. should d.c. mayor vincent gray step down? a majority of voters in the district say it is time to go. >> there's a new poll in "the washington post" that found most city residents believe he should resign. the results of the poll were divided, though, on both economic and ethnic lines. delia goncalves joins us live outside the wilson building with more this morning. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. the poll breaks down sex, too, indicating more and more women here in the district of columbia are now turning their backs on the mayor. among white women, his support is down to just 6% from 37% and among black women his approval rating has dropped a dramatic 18 points now only 32%. let's take a look at some video shot earlier in the week. a small group of clergy members, but influential clergy members, were rallying in support of the mayor outside the wilson building yesterday. but according to the poll, 48% of african-americans here in the city, a huge former base of

the mayor now think that he should resign office. three of his campaign aides have pled guilty to federal charges and genie harris, a convicted felon says she told the mayor back in january about the $653,000 shadow campaign. three council members have called for the mayor's resignation but many other colleagues are taking a different approach. let's listen to what they have to say. >> we have time to hear some more facts. i think the mayor has to explain himself. our city has been damaged. at this point he has not been charged. i think he's in a pickle. damn if you do, damn if you don't. >> reporter: it's a very big pickle because there are more charges that are likely to come down. we know the f.b.i. is looking at several other people who are connected to his campaign. so we will have to wait and see how this investigation plays out. apparently that's what the mayor is waiting to do, too.

wait and see how everything shakes out. back to you. >> big pickle indeed. delia goncalves live this morning for us on the mayor's situation. 5:33 now. texas congressman michael mccall says the f.b.i. mishandled information. during the events leading up to the deadly fort hood attack in 2009. army psychiatrist major nadal hassan apparently was communicating with a well known terrorist before he shot and killed 13 people on that base. congressman mccall says the f.b.i.'s washington division was more concerned about political correctness than making sure the military had the information it needed on hassan. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused an airport shuttle to crash on the dulles toll road yesterday. this is in the westbound lanes near reston parkway exit. the driver and four passengers in the shuttle were hurt. four of those had just minor injuries. one person was flown by helicopter to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. yesterday's accident comes nearly a year after a deadly

accident involving another super shuttle van on the same road. one person was killed in that accident. the driver was charged with reckless driving. and a 9news now investigation revealed that more drivers had a lot of hours behind their belts when they were shuttle drivers. this particular driver had a record for speeding and reckless driving. the time right now is 5:34. i am watching your money. a good sign for folks who own their own homes. we're seeing a small recovery in the housing market. last month builders broke ground on the most new homes and apartments in nearly four years. overall home construction surged about 7% to the highest rate since october 2008. that and a string of strong profits led to a big rally on wall street. capital one bank is handing out millions of dollars in refunds to credit card customers after tricking them into buying costly adon services like payment -- addon

soybeans and wheat go to the poultry industry. they being our largest customer, we're deeply concerned about what they're going to do to ensure supply. everybody is going to get hurt in the drought and it will take a while but that will come down to the consumer. >> reporter: on his 1600 acres in talbott county, the soil has turned to dry powder. a neighbor's pond is drying up. the only salvageable crops are in fields with expensive drip irrigation fed by well. now even the ground water in some shallow wells is showing signs of drying up according to the county's agriculture extension agent. there's irony here. along his farm stand, some crops thrive as long as irrigated. if they are, the quality of these this year is as high as it's been in some time. >> we have cantaloupes,

doesn't look too bad. we'll take a live look on the northbound side of i-95. you're used to this at 5:49 in the morning. no problems exiting to the beltway toward annandale. i'll be back with more on that accident up north coming up in a few minutes. here's what's making news now at 5:50 this morning. is surgery the right treatment for some prostrate cancer patients? doctors prefer surgery right after diagnosis while others advise just watching and waiting to see if the cancer progresses. researchers followed more than 700 prostrate cancer patients and found those who had surgery did not live any longer than those who didn't. many doctors believe watching and waiting is a better option because surgery can come with side effects. the study was published in the "new england journal of medicine." a certain type of fat in the blood any increase the risk of alzheimer's. researchers linked the fatty compound to the disease. they found seniors with the highest levels in the blood were ten times more likely to

develop alzheimer's. larger studies will determine if it can one day help diagnosis this disease. high stressed jobs may increase the risk of a heart attack. boston researchers followed 22,000 women and found those with the most stressful jobs were 67% more likely to suffer a heart attack. previous studies show psychological stress can affect long-term cardiovascular health. harris teeter is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of a couple of crooks. check out this video from one of the stores. loudoun county sheriff's office says two masked men robbed the harris teeter grocery store at the village center plaza in aldie around 2:20 tuesday morning. they took off with some cash. if you have any information, call the loudoun county sheriff's office. let's take another look at the question of the day. what is the number one thing that kids tend to stick up their noses? is it a, a crayon, b, french fries, or c, a bean?

good morning. happy thursday. pre-friday. temperatures today will not be as hot compared to yesterday's triple highs. that's a good thing. by noon 89. chance for some showers and storms and those storm chances will increase throughout the afternoon and evening hours. we'll top out in the lower 89s on today -- lower 90s today. about 10 degrees cool near a lot of locations compared to yesterday. we do see areas of fog around stafford. visibility down to 5 miles. tappahannock 7 miles. visibility really impacted especially northwest of town into cumberland where visibility is less than a quarter mile. currently temperatures are still pretty warm out there and muggy. lower 80s downtown. 73 leesburg. 73 in culpeper and orange.

shoot. i got some lessons to work on any stroke. >> reporter: it was at a national riding competition during middle school her olympic dreams took shape. >> we learned from some athletes. i thought that was pretty cool. dow all these sports. all i have to do is learn how to fence. >> reporter: it didn't take her long to master that. >> i did my first when i was 17. the coaches were like where did this girl come from because nobody had heard of me before. >> reporter: in the world of pent at&t lons, plenty of people know her now. she is one of only two american women who qualified for the 2012 olympic team. you're just not built like the other girls, right? you were just born with a certain level of athleticism, ambition, determination. >> you're not amazing at anything but solid at everything. >> reporter: they don't find out which horse they'll be riding till 20 minutes before the event and they have to jump 15 fences. suzanne's riding coach feels
