6:00 am
80s and upper 70s as we get late in the day. it does look like a bit of a sticky start so you definitely want to plan ahead. highs today in the 80s for most of us. we'll see this trend continue as we go in toward the weekend. saturday upper 70s to near 80 degrees. we'll stay code yellow and improve things nicely on sunday when we finally lose some of that heat. monika? overall generally speaking, your major thoroughfares are fine with the exception of two spots. if you're planning to head over to the beltway on the east side of town, there had been this accident near kenilworth avenue. everything was moved to the shoulder but it left slow traffic getting by southbound 495. bw parkway route 50 both are fine as you head for the beltway and beyond through cheverly into the northeast corridor. we'll take a live look at the beltway north of town at new hampshire avenue. still no real delays to speak of on the outer loop as you leave the 95 interchange past new hampshire avenue and headed
6:01 am
for silver spring area. let's go back over to the maps and this time we'll head over to the other side of town. no problems on 66 as you head inbound from manassas till you reach 7100 where an accident was moved to the shoulder and again slow traffic getting by. we had the same situation yesterday. at least we have it friday morning light so it might not be as bad as yesterday morning. another live look outside here at the american legion bridge. no traffic volumes yet to speak of across the river. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, monika. we're going to begin with breaking news of a deadly movie theater shooting near denver, colorado. authorities say at least 14 people were killed during the showing of the new batman movie "the dark knight rises." you're looking at live pictures there. close to 40 others are being treated for injuries. witnesses told investigators that the gunman kicked in one of the theater exits, threw a smoke bomb and opened fire. police have a suspect in custody. >> we have no evidence of any
6:02 am
additional shooters. police officers responded and found the gunman in the back of the theater outside in the parking lot near a car in possession of a gas mask and at least a rifle and a handgun. there is at least one additional weapon was found inside. the shooting apparently went on for some time. as of right now, we have approximately 50 who were hit and we have 14 dead. ten in the theater and four died at area hospitals. >> a horrible and terrifying situation there. the suspect made reference to possible explosives. as a result, an apartment building in north aurora has been evacuated as police search for possible explosives. now to our top story here at home. another round of storms means
6:03 am
more flooding and more power outages in the region. >> last night's deluge flooded low-lying areas and knocked out power to thousands of customers yet again in virginia, maryland and the district. delia goncalves joins us live from 12th and rhode island avenue in northeast d.c. with more on the recovery. how is it going there now, delia? >> reporter: pepco is making a lot of progress. their numbers are inching down and at last check, they are well below the 5,000 mark. you can see these lights are back up and running in normal praiption. they were flashing just -- normal operation. they were flashing just a short time ago. you should still proceed through the area with caution because you could run into some lights that are still flashing or out. the area is drying out after last night's storm that caused major flooding on a number of our region's roads. the storm once again knocked out power to residents, many
6:04 am
whom are just recovering from two blackouts in the past couple of weeks, including the derecho which left many in the dark up to one full week. a lot of customers are angry with pepco and general manager tom graham's missteps during a hearing before the public service commission certainly hasn't helped. >> i say to myself is it reasonable for an individual to be upset if they're out of service for a week or more and obviously the answer is no. >> didn't you mean the opposite? i'll just give you a second to- - >> i'm sorry. >> rewind the tape and start again there. >> what i was saying reasonably upset for not having power for a week, it's not reasonable for a person to be upset at all. >> what? >> gosh, he had two chances and still didn't get it right. he did ask later for a redo because he knows he misspoke
6:05 am
twice. you've got to feel bad for him a little bit but you may not after all when you think about the fact that tom graham asked for a rate increase. so many of you could be paying a whole lot more when it comes to your electricity bill. we'll have that side of the story coming up at 6:30. back to you. >> thank you, delia. it is 6:05. i'm watching your money. on wall street more strong earnings sent stocks higher. the dow added about 35 points in trading yesterday. the nasdaq was up by 23 and the s&p 500 was better by almost 4 points. shares of google are trading higher by 3% before the bell after it had another strong quarter. the number one search engine said earnings rose 11%. that was more than expected but sales were slightly below predictions. here's why. the average cost advertisers paid to google for each ad click fell 16% from a year ago. microsoft shares also better by
6:06 am
2% before the bell this morning after it beat wall street estimates with its earnings report. it spent more on computer and software last quarter and that made up for lackluster consumer demand. gas prices on the rise again. prices at the pump are 10 cents a gallon higher in the past two weeks. that follows a big jump in crude prices because of increased tensions in the middle east. gas prices often lag crude prices by a couple of weeks. crude now trading at nearly $93 a barrel. that's its highest level since may. the time right now is 6:06. coming up when the news continues, yahoo's decision to hire marissa mayer as c.e.o. has created quite a buzz in the business world. >> it sure has. we decided to ask our own c.e.o. to share her experiences. that's coming up next. >> plus, olga breese has the weather forecast for us when we come back. you're watching 9news now. happy friday morning. >> and we have exciting news
6:07 am
for the sunday morning programming. this fall wusa will launch an exciting new talk show with bloomberg government. it will air sunday morning at part of wusa9's acclaimed power block. peter cook will be the host. that is sunday this fall on wusa9. >> before we head to break, here's another live look at the scene of a deadly shooting in aurora, colorado. 14 people killed. we're on top of the story. we'll have more when we come back.
6:08 am
6:09 am
6:10 am
we're starting off the morning with a peak of sunshine. temperatures moving into the 80s. a high today of 87. i-66 there had been an accident at route 7100. it's on the left shoulder now but left some slow traffic getting by. beyond that lanes are open as you head for vienna and the beltway. i'll have more on traffic coming up in a few minutes. in the meantime back you to, mike. >> thank you, monika. yahoo's decision to hire marissa mayer as c.e.o. has created quite a biz in the business words. she comes from google helping to build it into a huge success it is now. now at 37 years old, she takes
6:11 am
over the reins at yahoo. she's an engineer and developed the white search page we all know about google. she's also six months pregnant with her first child. she joins a growing list of women who are c.e.o.s at fortune 500 companies. but this is a short list. just 19 of the fortune 500 companies are run by women which is just 4%. the first woman to do it you may remember katherine graham when she took over "the washington post" back in 1972. and 40 years later there are just 19. the c.e.o. of our parent company gannett is on that short list. why do you think her selection as c.e.o. is creating such a buzz at yahoo? >> i think first of all it's a terrific choice. you were just reading about her credentials. she obviously has a great background, a lot of great experience at google. i think some of the buzz is because she's young, 37, and it's her first c.e.o.
6:12 am
slot and oh, by the way, she happens to be having a child. i think that's actually terrific and i think it speaks to the fact that we've come a long way in terms of being open to all kinds of different possibilities. i think it's wonderful that she's setting a lot of firsts and i think the boorldz of yahoo obvious -- board of yahoo obviously chose her not just for the next couple of months but a long ten wriewr to turn around the -- tenure to turn around the company. >> 50% of the population is women yet only 4% are in the fortune 500 list of c.e.o.s. why do you think that is? is it a slow evolution you think? >> i think it is an evolution. i think a lot of women haven't been in the roles for a long time that lead towards the c.e.o. role. i think what we'll see as more and more women are in operating roles and other roles at a variety of companies, that we'll see a lot more women c.e.o.s into the future. >> is there a difficult balance
6:13 am
when you have a family? you're married, mother of two. you've been in the ranks and at high positions at gannett for years now. how hard is it balance? do you balance? >> you know, i think you balance as best you can. it's not always going to be in perfect balance. there are always trade-offs in life. but, look, there are a lot of different situations. being a mother is one of them. you can have aged parents, you can have other situations. it's not easy but i think women do a great job of juggling a lot of balls at the same time. we're tremendous i think at time management and that's incredibly important when you have children. so i think it's a great opportunity and a key to it is i think having a supportive structure around you which i was very fortunate to have when i was moving through the ranks. so it's a lot of those things all together. >> i've had the occasion to interview another fortune 500 c.e.o. who is a man and i said how do you balance and he said -- he
6:14 am
started to laugh. he said don't ask my wife about balance. are women just better at it? >> i think we might be a little bit better. i think we understand time management and organization. if you're a stay at home mom, you better understand organization and time management and if you've rizzen through the ranks like -- risen through the ranks like marissa and others, you've obviously picked that up during the course of your career. >> if the number of women running fortune 500 companies is going to increase down to 4 prosecute it is now, they'll have to learn from the c.e.o.s in position right now. what advice would you give to somebody who is trying to move up through the ramps man or woman to -- ranks man or woman. >> number one is always focus on the job at hand. the best way to be recognized, to have your talent recognized is to focus on the job you have, to do that job as well as you can and to really be a star at that job.
6:15 am
i think the other thing is to be willing to accept a job that is outside your comfort zone. that's the best way to learn. that's the best way to expand your horizons is to move a little bit out of your comfort zone. i know i d. i know a lot of women, i'm sure marissa is feeling a little bit that way as well. >> thank you so much. c.e.o. of gannett. we appreciate your insight this morning. jess, olga, over to you. >> well, the forecast today is going to be a little bit overcast as we start out this morning. things will improve, though, as we get throughout the day. let's take a look at our current conditions right now. outside, though, we do have the possibility of pulling in a stray shower later on in the day. the graphics will show a little more of that. our day planner partly sunny skies through midday. we'll build in more cloud cover late in the day. that means isolated showers and thunderstorms could start popping up as early as 1:00 p.m. we'll definitely see some moisture moving on through during that 5:00 hour. temperatures push the middle range and upper 80s. flood watch until 1:00 in the
6:16 am
afternoon covering the entire metropolitan area. that's because of the overnight rain that we had. and then if we get some steady rain later on this afternoon, this could pop in and be extended for the long term. the current forecast, though, today will be mainly cloudy to start. partly sunny in the afternoon. a little bit of unsettled weather popping on through so we have afternoon showers and thunderstorms around. we're going to carry temperatures not quite as hot today. it will still be warm but at least we will be in the 80s. we will see some cooler temperatures, though, as we get into the saturday forecast. right now, though, the radar has quieted down. we don't see much over the last three-hour loop of our radar scan but you can see the moisture starting to pull on in from the west. eight going to make steady progress as we head toward the afternoon. 76 at reagan national airport. winds light and variable right now out of the northwest. the futurecast forecast models, the morning commute is going to be fine. even by the 12:00 hour starting to see a few spotty showers but
6:17 am
it really fillings in later on this afternoon and evening. could be quite wet from 8:00 till midnight. then the steadier, heavier rain moves out. we start to clear a little bit of cloud cover. could see patchy fog early on saturday morning and wet fields if you have some early morning games. forecast highs today about 87 to 88 for reagan national airport. we'll push the upper 80s down to the south. we'll still to the middle range 80s up north. next two days are code yellow with a thunderstorm opportunity in the afternoon. code green on sunday and the extended forecast shows a little improvement into the weekend. back to you. park police on the scene of an accident on the southbound side of the gw parkway just past route 123. watch out for some lane closures. again southbound on the gw parkway just past route 123. i'll have more information on that and other area roads coming up in my next report. a lot more to come. stay with us. you're watching 9news now.
6:18 am
6:19 am
6:20 am
6:21 am
welcome back. it's 6:20. partly cloudy skies for today will move in the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms later on this afternoon. our day planner does show some could be heavy and steady late in the day. highs middle to upper 80s. good morning, everybody. what a way to end an exciting rivalry series. two of the league's best pitchers, to all-stars. the surprising r.a. dickey pitched a jewel but gio gonzalez wasn't nearly as successful. nationals going for the sweep in the matinee. mets already up 2-1 in the 2nd. ike davis adds another run to that. gio got rocked, his worst outing since becoming a national. six runs done after three and a third. david wright's shot make it is
6:22 am
9-1. drew storen finally getting some action after a long stint on the dl, pitched a scoreless 9th inning keeping the mets from attacking on any more runs but the deficit was too big to overcome the mets avoid the sweep 9 -5. >> a lot of good things happened in that ballgame. when you're nine runs down and come back and a couple times had a tying run on deck, it's not always just a complete bad day. it was really a lot of good things that happened there that i'm proud to see. >> the glass is half full. team u.s.a. facing great britain in london yesterday. daren williams starting in place of chris paul, responded well with 19 points. williams five of 16 from downtown helping the u.s. pull away from britain's 118-78 the final. the team will face argentina this sunday in spain. that's a quick look at sports this morning. i'm kristen berset. have a great friday.

6:24 am
6:25 am
6:26 am
it is 6:27.
6:27 am
we're staying on top of the deadly movie shooting in denver, colorado. authorities say 14 people are dead. this all happened during the showing of the new batman movie "the dark knight rises." close to 40 others are being treated for injuries. witnesses told investigators a gunman kicked in one of the theater exit doors, threw in a smoke bomb and then just started shooting. police now have a suspect in custody. that suspect made reference to some possible explosives. you're looking at some youtube video shot by some of the people that were there. as a result, an apartment building in north aurora has been evacuated as police search for possible explosives. a reporter from our sister station kusa is outside one of the hospitals where the wounded are being taken. he filed this report just a short time ago. >> reporter: a man came up to us a short time ago and was asking us if we had more information than he d. one of his good friends was shot and grazed in the head. he showed us a photo and you can see blood all over this
6:28 am
man's face. he's okay but they had to send him back in here at the er because doctors needed to relieve some of the pressure on his head. he was asking us, he said that his friend, his friend's wife and their 7-year-old were all in the movie theater when this happened. right now they don't know where that 7-year-old child is. they know that the friend and friend's wife is here at aurora medical center in the emergency room behind me but don't know where the child is and that's what they're desperately trying to find out. this was a chaotic situation. people were separated, scrambling. as you mentioned they're at several different hospitals. a number of them here in aurora. we're going to play a good portion of this interview with brittany jackson. she was actually in the er when she heard the call come in. she was supposed to be at that movie tonight. >> i actually had six friends in total that were supposed to go to that showing, me and then them. as they were leaving he
6:29 am
witnessed a baby, an infant get shot. they said gas bombs as they were leaving and then just gunshots all over the place. it started in the theater that i had bought tickets to so it's kind of mind boggling. while i was here waiting to talk to the doctor, i heard the call come in from the nurses station. there were people unconscious, people bleeding. i saw one bed go past. poor guy had blood caked all over his face. he just was not responsive at all. same thing with the lady. just all out of it. by the time i left, i overheard the nurses saying they mapged to get -- managed to get almost everyone stabilized which is really a blessing. >> reporter: it's hard for a lot of people to comprehend that this really happened tonight here in aurora. a lot of people just in shock right now. >> that was a reporter from our sister station kusa in denver. a moviehouse shooting during the latest batman movie.
6:30 am
>> the youtube video we were showing, you could hear people screaming. you could see people covered in blood as they were coming out of the movie theater. a terrible story we're covering this morning. >> very scary. 14 people dead. 40 wounded. we'll continue to follow the story and bring you more as we get it. olga breese is live on the weather terrace with our forecast. we had really tough storms last night. a the low of people don't have power this morning and there's more rain in the forecast. >> yes, we could have another round similar coming our way later on this afternoon and into the evening hours. for this morning we're dealing with all of that moisture. we have the flood watch up till about 1:00 this afternoon. the day plan letter give us a little bit of -- planner will give us a little bit of a break. later on this afternoon we'll see the opportunity for some showers and thunderstorms to move on through. that means today is a yellow alert day as the showers and storms very much a possibility, particularly through the late evening. monika? >> in greenbelt on the eastbound side of route 193,
6:31 am
you'll find it closed between good luck road and lanham severn road because of an overnight accident with a utility pole down as well right here in greenbelt. also now a situation with an accident on the southbound side of the gw parkway right near route 123 and park police are on the scene of that one. let's go outside live. if you're planning to head across the american legion bridge here, volumes are still fairly light actually between bethesda and tysons corner. you should be okay coming in on 66. there had been an accident near route 123 or route 7100 that was on the showedder and causing some delays getting by. also want to let you know if you're in rockville on the southbound side of route 355 at montgomery county ville -- montgomery village avenue, the signal lights are out. to the other maps on the northbound side of i-95, you're just going to find volume forming in the woodbridge area and lorton into springfield. we'll go outside live now. if you're planning to head to springfield, actually for friday morning this looks really good heading to the beltway or beyond 395.
6:32 am
flooding in arlington on south joyce street near washington boulevard. i'll be back with more trav at 6:45. -- more traffic at 6:45. pepco customers cannot catch a break this summer. another round of storms means more flooding and power outages in the region yet again the lions share falling on pepco. >> it flooded low-lying areas again, knocked out power to about 40,000 customers. they were spread across virginia, maryland and the district but a lot of them in the district. delia goncalves joins us live in northeast. they continue to get slammed. >> reporter: i know. these folks just can't get a break honestly. they've been hard hit by these storms. fortunately, though, some good news for morning commuters especially. you can see the power is back on and the lights have been restored to their normal operational service. so traffic is flowing smoothly but we've been seeing a lot of crews, utility crews throughout the area. so they are slowly turning
6:33 am
these lights back on so you should proceed with caution as you're commuting to work this morning on rhode island avenue because thousands of customers in the area lost electricity. last night's fast moving rain flooded numerous roads throughout the region and basements and neighborhoods like bloomingdale in northeast flooded for the third time in the past couple of weeks. however, this go around restoration is faster than it was during the derecho which left hundreds of thousands of customers in the dark, anywhere from three to seven full days. now as pepco seeks a 4% rate hike, a number of maryland lawmakers are asking the public service commission to send pepco a message and deny that increase. >> pepco is stonewalling. they're simply giving excuses and that's what we've been hearing all afternoon is one excuse after another. >> as i stated previously, our reliability plan is focused on day-to-day improvements, not
6:34 am
protecting the system as governor o'mally described as a hurricane with no warning. >> reporter: here's a breakdown for you. if this rate hike is approved in maryland you can expect another $50.50 add -- $5.50 added to your bill. in d.c. it would amount to another five bucks. the commissioners here in d.c. haven't made a decision as to when they'll make an announcement in regard to the rate hike. however, in maryland you can expect to hear some news about the rate hike a little later today. mike, jess, back to you. >> thank you, delia, live in northeast washington this morning. more than half of d.c. voters say mayor vincent gray should resign. that's according to a new "washington post" poll that's out now. this is in the wake of his continuing campaign corruption scandal. as kristin fisher explains, mayor gray isn't too happy about these low marks. >> reporter: mayor gray gives a glowing report card on the state of h.i.v. and aids in the district. all as and bs but minutes later he's swarmed by reporters.
6:35 am
we want to know what he thinks of his report card. mayor, on a personal level, when you hear about these kinds of polls numbers -- poll numbers, does it bother you? >> of course. i would love to be able to have the as and bs we just saw. of course it does. >> reporter: especially when the poll shows your own political base is turning ow. 48% of the african-american voters polled say it's time for mayor gray to step down. do you think you should resign? -- >> do you think he should resign? >> yes. >> reporter: why? >> because he's hurting the city. >> reporter: but mayor gray says look how he's helped the city. crime is down. unemployment is down. the mayor says it doesn't mean he's guilty. >> i haven't been charged of anything. i haven't been convicted of anything. i would urge people to strongly ask them to allow this whole process to play out. >> reporter: but this poll shows that more than half of d.c. voters don't want to wait. 61% of the people polled say
6:36 am
he's not honest and trustworthy and 63% say he's not running an ethical administration. >> a lot of their opinions i think have been colored by this investigation and this campaign issue. and that's not unusual. i think that happens to a lot of people. >> reporter: the problem is he's not a lot of people. he's the mayor. >> you can't hire people with ethical standards that you can trust, then there's a fundamental problem with you as an administrator. >> reporter: in washington, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> not only is this poll bad for mayor gray, it's not helping the city either. 74% of the people polled think this scandal is not an isolated incident and a sign of bigger problems in d.c. government. in a statement released by mayor gray's attorney, he says mayor gray is being treated very unfairly by some in the media and those with their own political agendas. they are not focusing on the very good things he's doing for our city, the improvements he's made in city services, the local economy and the welfare of the less fortunate in our
6:37 am
community. we want to bring an update on the breaking news we've been covering this morning coming out of aurora, colorado. a mass shooting that happened at a movie theater during a showing of the new batman movie. here's the new information we have coming into us from our partners at kusa. at this point children's hospital has confirmed that six patients are being treated from the shooting. these are patients age 6 to age 31. an update to you on the death toll as well. this has now gone from 14 to 15 confirmed dead. that comes to us from the chief of police there, dan oats. the red cross is working with a gateway high school to work with the witnesses there. we believe we have some sound -- we may have some sound from a witness who was at the movie theater at the time. let's listen to what he had to say. >> it took me a second to realize what was actually going on. and as people were running
6:38 am
away, i hit the ground so i wouldn't be hit. that's -- i heard the sound of metal canisters clinking around. then i saw plumes of smoke. >> this is to give you an indication of just how fluid this breaking news situation is. we heard just shortly ago that it was 15 confirmed dead. now we hear it's back to 14, that that extra casualty may have been a hoax situation coming out of aurora, colorado. obviously we'll stay on this story all day today. >> just a sad story. we'll be right back.
6:39 am
6:40 am
6:41 am
6:42 am
welcome back with time saferrer traffic. a couple of issue -- timesaver traffic. a couple of issues you'll want to know. with all the storms that came through tonight, you may find
6:43 am
tree limbs down, high standing water and in this case a utility pole down closing greenbelt road between good luck road and lanham severn road. route 50 looks fine as you come in from annapolis. inside through cheverly as well. on the outer loop of the beltway you can expect to be on the brakes from about the 95 interchange heading past new hampshire avenue heading west toward university boulevard before the pace improves. we'll go back over to the maps. if you're planning to head over into virginia, a couple of issues for you to know about. southbound on the gw parkway, there had been an accident at route 123. i believe it's off to the side of the road but left slow traffic for you trying to get into the district. 66 inbound inside the beltway slow traffic as usual as you head for the roosevelt bridge. here's 66 outside the beltway. looks great at gallows road heading for the beltway. no big problems to report on 66 or the dulles toll road. 95 is beginning to slow down in lorton up toward springfield. by the way in arlington, high standing water and flooding has closed down south joyce street
6:44 am
near washington boulevard. you want to keep that in mind for your travel plans. 395 is fine to the 14th street bridge. i'll be back with more traffic at 6:58. back to you. >> thanks a lot, monika. 6:44 now. olga breese is in for howard today. we had serious rain last night. what about today? >> we'll get a little bit of serious rain today as well. i looked at the newer forecast model and bringing in steadier rain. this could impact the afternoon rush later on today. for right now we just have the humidity to deal with. overcast skies. the day planner will keep us partly sunny into midday. by late in the afternoon, though, we're going to fill in the cloud cover with ernest. temperatures should make it to the middle 80s. we'll push the upper 80 mark later on today. maybe 87 degrees for reagan national. once the rain starts, things will cool down dramatically. we still have our flood watch. this is still 1:00 this afternoon from last night's rain. i'm anticipating we're going to get more of these flood advisories later on today as the next round of showers and storms starts to move on
6:45 am
through. so our weather headlines are pretty specific. we will definitely see the clouds stick around most of the day today. unsented weather this afternoon will bring us the possibility of showers and thunderstorms so we're in the code yellow for today. we'll also see our air quality improve a little bit but we won't be quite as hot as our winds have been calm to light this morning. then tomorrow we have more of the same. not quite as warm as we go in toward the weekend but we will have the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms each day for the next several days. so here's how we're looking right now. reagan national airport 76 degrees under cloudy skies. pressure looks pretty good right now but this is the future cast i was talking about. it's bringing in the moisture from the morning off toward the west but if i pause this at 8:00 tonight, there's pretty steady pockets of rain falling down here, an inch per hour. that lasts till about midnight, about 1:00, 2:00 in the morning we start to ease things up, even by 8:00 in the morning we still have overcast skies and some moisture down across the south. so most of that will move on
6:46 am
