. joining us i'm jessica doyle. jc hayward has the day off. police in aerror remark colorado are identifying to -- in aurora, colorado are trying to navigate through jamie holmes' home. at least 12 people are dead and over 50 are injured in a shooting. among those hurt is a 3-month- old baby. police say 24-year-old holmes walked into the theater and started firing. here's what witnesses had to say about the horror inside that theater. >> he was just in a black gas mask and all black. besides that -- [ inaudible ] >> he took a gun and pointed it straight to my face. he was literally three feet away from me. he was wearing a gas mask and he looked like he was from a s.w.a.t. team or something. i was just terrifed. i didn't know what to do. i jumped forward into the aisle

and curled into a ball and waited for him to go up the stairs. >> there was a break. stuck my head up. caught a glimpse of him, the main silhouette and he started shooting again. >> none of us knew what was going on. at that point there's a large crowd in front of the theater and everybody started sprinting away from the theater. >> president obama cut his florida campaign swing short after hearing about the massacre in fort myers, florida. he thanked the crowd for coming out to support him but said today everyone has to remember the victims of this shooting. >> the federal government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to bring whoever is responsible for this heinous crime to justice. i'm sure many of you who are parents here had the same reaction i does when i heard -- reaction i did when i heard this news. my daughters go to the movies. what if they had been in the

theater? as so many of our kids do every day. michele and i will be fortunate to hug our girls a little tighter tonight and i'm sure will you do the same with your children. >> the first lady also canceled two campaign stops in charlottesville, virginia. in light of the shooting, warner bros. has canceled its paris premiere of "the dark knight rises." it said in a statement warner bros. is deeply saddened about the shocking incident. we extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims of this tragic time. so far police have not been able to get the suspect james holmes to talk about what happened signed the theater. we have more. >> reporter: cell phone video captured the chaotic moments after a heavily armed gunman opened fire during a midnight showing of the new batman movie. a man in a blood smoked shirt and a child in a batman costume were among hundreds of people

who escaped the carnage. >> there was a gas can thrown intots audience behind me. -- into the audience behind me. i thought it was a stunt of the movie. >> reporter: he was sitting in the second row when the attack happened. >> it was a serious moment because i felt the caps from the bullet burn my leg. >> reporter: jennifer says the first shot was fired at the ceiling. >> straight from the ceiling he took a gun and pointed it straight to my face. he was literally 3 feet away from me. i jumped forward into the aisle and rolled into a ball waiting for him to go up the stairs. >> reporter: the 24-year-old suspect james holmes did not put up a fight when arrested in the parking lot. he told police his apartment was booby trapped. he used two weapons, two pistols and two assault rifles. his motive has not been revealed but there are no parent ties to terrorism. the survivors including a 3- month-old baby are being treated at several hospitals. ben was moved to tears describing what he saw. >> a young girl with bullet

wounds in her leg and blood all over her. >> reporter: witnesses say they couldn't breathe after the gunman released the canisters. several victims are being treated for chemical exposure. , cbs news, aurora, colorado. >> the deadly shooting inside the aurora, colorado theater has some police departments on alert here. montgomery county police chief tells 9news we're going to increase our patrol presence around movie theaters for the purpose of calming public fears or concerns. we have no indication or information that there are any threats in this area. moviegoers who went to theaters with heavy hearts for their victims in colorado. delia goncalves has their recollection. >> reporter: a small hard but diehard group of fans heading to the early showing of "the dark knight rises" in georgetown have one thing on their mind. >> i say shame on that guy. >> reporter: news of the movie theater massacre spread quickly among the fan base. >> it's the movies. it's a part where we go to

distract our lives from the real world, from danger out there. now they're bringing danger into the movie. >> reporter: why they don't blame the action film, some think security here at home may be affected by the tragic events in colorado. >> i wouldn't be surprised at least they make their rounds around, checking the emergency exit doors or -- i don't know. patting down is a little extreme but be at least aware of who is going into the theater. >> you don't want to take away your liberties. if you're going to start searching everybody, nobody wants to go to the movies anymore. >> i think your chances getting killed on the way there in a car driving are probably higher than your chances of getting killed there. >> i'm not going to stop doing whatever i usually do because somebody shot people. you have to go on with your life. >> this is one nut who took advantage of the situation. it can happen anywhere. it can happen at the mall. it can happen walking on the street. you can't stop living just because somebody did something crazy. >> reporter: despite the tragic news, these moviegoers say coming to see their favorite

flick will not end and must not change. in georgetown, delia goncalves, 9 news now. >> tonight cbs will air a special edition of "48 hours." it begins at 8:00 p.m. we've been hit with a lot of rain and storms this week. today get ready for another round. we're now designating this as a severe weather alert day. a flash flood watch is in effect. olga breese joins us with more. >> i have pulled up this map that shows the entire metro area, portions of west virginia, southern pennsylvania. underneath that flash flood watch until 11:00 tonight. this all came about from the previous storms we had overnight and we're expecting another round of heavy storms, possibly even severe weather rolling in later on today. now, as we take a look a little bit closer, we can see the entire area is going to be underneath this particular watch. and that means that today's temperatures we're backing down a little bit.

instead of 87 degrees, we should probably get into the middle range 80s before the storms start to hit. right now on radar we're only picking up on a few light sprinkles so far. nothing steady. no reds or yellows on the radar yet but as we progress into the afternoon, that will change. the storms will probably start about 3:00 to 4:00 in ernest. we could see very steady rain for the drive time home during the 5:00, 6:00 stretch. and most definitely some of these showers will linger into the later night period, including 9:00, 11:00, and some portions of the viewing area off to the far east may even see some rain as late as midnight tonight. when we come back, more on our top stories. the massacre at a movie theater in colorado. keep it here.

>> we're back. today is a severe weather alert today. pop-up storms possible, heavy flooding possible. >> we could see heavy downpours, gusty winds, lightning, thunder similar to what we saw last night. right now it's setting up, starting to bubble up. we've seen a lot of storms roll through, kentucky, southern portions of west virginia, tennessee. so far the rainfall hasn't made it over the mountains but we're beginning to add to our temperature today and as we start to heat up, then you start to destabilize and that will give us the opportunity later on today.

right now it's not so bad. we are already at 80 degrees. that's an update this hour for reagan national airport. i'm expecting our highs should hover right around 85 degrees. we have to keep our forecast down a couple of degrees this afternoon from the original because these clouds are not breaking whatsoever since the early morning hours. we'll continue to say mostly cloudy through midday, late afternoon. by about the 3:00 or 4:00 hour, most of us will start to see some storms moving on in in our area. the good news is we are in a code green for our air quality alert. we scoured out some of that mugginess or i should say the oppressive heat we had over the last couple of days but with these storms, we do have some danger of that flooding coming on through. that's why we have the flood advisories. this is a general flood watch meaning our conditions are favorable. it's covering all of the d.c. metro area, most of northern and central today v.a. as well as -- central virginia as well as portions of west

virginia. it will continue to go till 11:00 tonight unless they deem it necessary to extend that. it depends on the timing of the rain coming through. our planner is definitely going to take us into the 80s this afternoon. we're starting to push up a little bit. notice how temperatures are going to drop rain cooled by the time we get to the 6:00 hour. we'll head back down into the 70s in no time as we head into the evening. doppler radar has a few of these light showers and sprinkles. we like to see the green on the radar as opposed to the red and yellow with the steadier, heavier rainfall and the ground in many cases being saturated from yesterday won't be able to hold some of that moisture. this 12-hour loop shows the showers and storms that came through during the overnight period. all that has moved off but now we're setting up our second round and it is on the way. my best estimate is over the next couple of hours. so again the flood advisory is going to stick with us until about 11:00 tonight. looking good around the

beltway. made it out of the 70s for most of us. hit 80 degrees at reagan national airport. starting to see more humidity. we're up to 74% humidity making it feel more oppressive. the timing for the storms according to our futurecast forecast model is generally bringing the moderate rainfall in by about the drive time home. so it will be a little bit messy. also a nats game this afternoon. that could be in jeopardy due to the showers moving on through and then as we get into the overnight after about midnight, most of that will move on down toward the south and that's where we have our fun sitting just off the coast. highs into the 80s. then we'll keep things fairly warm. as we head into overnight, down to 70. we could see showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours on your saturday. temperatures much cooler tomorrow. only in the 70s. that's due to the cloud cover and the northeast winds. but then we start to bring back

we're back with our top story. the mass shooting at a movie theater in colorado. at least 12 are dead and more than 50 injured after a former medical student broke into the theater and opened fire. joining us now with the latest from aurora, colorado is michele. what do we know about the suspect at this point and his possible motive in this case? >> reporter: we are still learning about the suspect. we do know he is 24-year-old james holmes. he was arrested shortly after the shooting was called in right behind the theater in the parking lot. we also know police were able to confiscate his vehicle. they did find explosives inside that car earlier this morning. fire crews and police crews are still at his apartment which is not too far away from this theater in aurora. there was a cherry-picker out there earlier that was placed at the third floor apartment window. we're assuming that's the suspect's window. they were very careful about

trying to get into that window, carefully taking off the window screen, looking inside and of course we just found out that they did find some explosives in that we talked to some witnesses earlier who said that they were simply watching this movie. this was a highly anticipated movie. lots of families came out here. about 300 people inside the theater at the time when the suspect allegedly came into the emergency exit. he was armed with two assault rifles, two pistols, and we're also told a knife. he was wearing a bulletproof vest and a gas mask. he threw some kind of device that released some smoke. we're thinking it may have been tear gas and started shooting. >> michele, police are operating on the theory this is a lone gunman. this is a pretty sophisticated attack entering through the exit door, the booby trapped apartment, the tear gas. what do they think about his background, that he may have assembled all of this stuff?

>> obviously, they're still investigating that but you can assume that this is a very plotted out and planned attack. he showed up with a gas mask and a bulletproof vest and he was heavily armed knowing what he was going to owe go -- to go into that theater and do. this was a batman movie where thoughts of families were there. some of the victims were very young. we're told a 3 moaldz baby was -- 3-month-old baby was taken to the hospital with some injuries. they're saying this could take weeks, possibly even months. but we're told there's no apparent tie to terrorism, that this is an isolated incident. >> tell us a little bit more about the victims. what do we know right now about the victims and how they're doing, what their state is at the hospital? >> reporter: well, of course we're still learning about the victims. we do know that 12 people have been confirmed dead in these shootings. we know several are in surgery right now.

pineapple shrimp. you have essence from the pineapple, sweetness from the mango. it blends in very, very well, especially on a hot, summer day. >> tell me the process of putting the shrimp skewers together. >> i took the pineapple and cubed it up. i took shrimp, 16 to 20 per pound, deveined it, took the tail off and skewered it. pineapple, mango, shrimp, so on and so forth. you repeat the process. we made a nice rum punch to accompany t. there's a couple of things that are extra -- i mean, i made a mango sauce that goes very well with it. you can eat it with a spoon. you can have tortilla chips with that. a couple of items we have at the restaurant that are very traditional, key lime pie. >> always a summer favorite. >> not too tart, perfect filling, some whipped cream,

lime zest. our famous chopped salad. romain lettuce, iceberg lettuce. >> and blueberry pie. love that. >> those are actually fresh from heritage farms down in pennsylvania about an hour, hour and a half away from here. >> let's talk about your cooking method. i think grilled shrimp, i think out on the grill, maybe a charcoaled grill, gas grill but you're doing it inside. tell me about that. >> some people don't have the luxury of having grills and balconies with the apartments and the condos you're not allowed to have gas grills or electric -- or charcoal grills out there. so i'm using a cast iron skillet. very inexpensive. this is about $15, $20. it gets very nice and hot. and it's pretty much the same as grilling. gets you a nice little -- the grill marks on there. >> definitely something nice to have in your arsenal if you like to cook. how long do you cook the shrimp for because that can be really hard to figure out? >> shrimp doesn't take too much
