end their carefully guarded silence on gun control. it is 4:31. here are some of the other stories making news now this morning. harsh punishments for penn state. the ncaa will announce corrective and punitive measures against the university at a 9:00 a.m. news conference today all in connection with the jerry sandusky child abuse sex case. the university will be spared the so-called death penalty which means it will not be suspended for a year or more, the football program won't. penn state could be on probation, a loss of football scholarships banning post- season bowl games a hefty finest mated between $340 million to $-- $30 million to $60 million. the onpaterno statue was removed yesterday morning. the university president said the structure if it remained would be a recurring wound for anyone who is a victim of child abuse. some students say the statue was taken down too soon, however. >> they're just making

citizens. they threw rocks and bottles at police. officers fired rubber bullets and pepper spray into the crowd. a pickup truck crash in south texas killed 11 people and injured 12 others. investigators say the driver of the truck ran off the road and crashed into two large trees. they say all 23 victims, including children were in this one vehicle. more information is coming to light about the 2010 campaign of d.c. mayor vincent gray. according to "the washington post," the gray campaign obtained a database with names of nearly 6,000 public housing residents. it targeted in get out the vote efforts. the post says the database appears to be an unare a rised use of private -- unauthor rised use of private information. gray said it wasn't needed because of already published contacts in the community. meanwhile 9news has learned that mayor gray is meeting privately with the leaders of

ward 5 democrats. ward 5 has a health of middle class african-american voters and chairman of ward 5 confirms the councilman will be at this meeting. a majority of d.c. voters feel mayor gray should step down because of a shadow campaign that spent more than $650,000 to help get him elected. at least three people were hurt after a portion of a deck at a loudoun county home collapsed. a spokesman for loudoun county fire said this collapse happened around 4:40 yesterday afternoon on loyalty road. about two dozen people were on the deck at the time. he says none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. 4:35 now. prince george's county police department needs your help. they're trying to find leander cooper, 573-year-old man last seen around 7:00 yesterday morning when he dropped his wife off at the washington hospital center. cooper suffers from dementia

>> there was one particular piece of equipment he had on him that was out of place. i'm so proud of my officers that they spotted that right away and challenged him. >> reporter: authorities were able to clear out all of the explosives in holmes' apartment, including 30 homemade grenades designed to kill whoever walked in and triggered a trip wire. among the evidence found inside, a batman mask. >> we're building a case to show that this was deliberative process by a very intelligent man who wanted to do this. >> reporter: president obama spent several hours here on sunday in a private meeting with the families of the victims. he says he told them he wasn't here so much as president but as a father and a husband. >> we can all understand what it would be to have somebody that we love taken from us in this fashion. >> reporter: sunday night thousands gathered in aurora to mourn. the shooting had shaken this community. >> we'll pull together.

>> reporter: governor john hickenlooper read the name of each of the victims and the crowd yelled back. but there was one name he didn't read. that of the alleged shooter. >> and i refuse to say his name. >> reporter: the people of aurora are trying to let go of the pain. holmes is in solitary confinement in jail. police say it's for his protection. the time right now is 4:41 on this monday morning. i am watching your phone. wall street is going to keep its eyes on earnings this week. among the biggies, we've got apple out with results on tuesday. facebook reports its first quarterly earnings as a public company. that happens on thursday. we're also going to get earnings news from amazon that day. traders looking ahead to new home sales, home prices, durable goods orders and consumer sentiment it is chock- a-block this week.

checking the numbers, the dow stands at 12,822, slid 121 points in trading on friday. ugly day all around. nasdaq down by about 41 points or a loss of almost 1.4% on the day. nasdaq was down by 14 points. an interest rate riggings scandal could lead to arrests. sources close to investigation say u.s. prosecutors and european regulators are close to filing criminal charges against individual traders who allegedly manipulated global interest rates. last month's britain barkley bank admitted to submitting false information to hold down the london rate. it agreed to pay $453 million final. a treasury department report says the process for setting a key global interest rate is flawed and poses a risk to the stability of financial markets all around the world. d.c. area drivers are seeing higher prices at the pump for the third week in a row. aaa mid-atlantic says the average price for a gallon of

regular gas in the d.c. area is $3.48 this week compared to $3.41 last week. drivers still paying less than they did a year ago this time. that's when gas was costing about $3.73 a gallon. the price of gas in the region is a penny less than the national average. fewer teens are interested in getting a driver's license. that's bad news for automakers marketing their cars to younger drivers. according to a study conducted by the university of michigan's transportation research institute, the percentage of 19- yards if the u.s. who have -- 19-year-olds in the u.s. who have their licenses actually dropped just over 87% in 1983 to about 70% in 2010. researchers say virtual contact online reduces the need for actual physical contact so they're not driving to see their friends. they also say the rough economic times makes it difficult for younger people to buy and maintain cars. the number of people 70 and

clarksville. this is approaching the area where 32 and 29 come together. also toward 95, 295. this will be coming across jessup, laurel, up toward columbia and clarksville. you'll watch out for that temperatures this morning, they're certainly muggy. the low to mid-70s with high humidity everywhere. some 60s, though, out in western maryland. in cumberland 60 and oakland 64. looking outside, that's the capitol behind just a wet lens on the camera. 75 degrees on our michael & son weather camera. 75 at a south wind at 6. only two degrees shy of the temperature. relative humidity way up there at 94%. nationally probably heard about the heat going on in the midwest. once again very hot from nebraska through kansas city, st. louis, chicago, even detroit today will be 102 degrees. we'll have to watch this heat because little pieces of it are going to break off and move east the next couple of days. here's that ridge of high pressure once again in the middle of the country.

storms forced to go up and over the ridge through south dakota and minnesota and iowa. then in the southeast, we've got some scattered showers and storms. got some pretty bad drought conditions across areas in south central georgia. so hopefully we can squeeze out some rain for them. and for us the ridge still west with that northwesterly flow giving us the threat for a few showers and storms. here we are through midday. still looks pretty quiet. then this afternoon some showers and storms develop. 5:00 you'll notice them around harrisburg, maybe back toward frederick, in toward winchester coming through early this evening. overnight, i stopped this at 4:00 a.m. isolated showers overnight. quieter in the morning. midday tuesday got another batch of showers and storms in southwest pennsylvania. looks like it will be visiting us for the mid to latter parts of the afternoon here on tuesday before clearing out tuesday night and then wednesday looks fine. in fact, wednesday looks like we'll drop just a few degrees. as we look at the forecast for the next three days, got the yellow alerts for the afternoon
