with a chance of thunderstorms in a couple of spots this afternoon. this morning the bigger concern just the light sprinkles and the high humidity. a little tough to see. around here we've got the sprimples but a lot more -- sprinkles but a lot more from ohio moving into southwestern virginia. locally live doppler 9hd, i've doomed in on montgomery county and howard county. here's olney. you see the sprinkles moving east along route 32, crossing 29, crossing 95. got a few more concentrated showers there. other areas some drizzle here and there. heard from bill, he's 73 along with la plata. 76 now at national and 68 up in frederick. going into the low 90s. let's go to monika samtani. she's got a look at timesaver traffic. good morning, everybody. you know, for a monday morning, we're really not doing too badly. things are fine all around the beltway. we're going to zoom in on the west side of town coming in from the airport or from manassas and centreville on 66 over to the beltway.

you're fine. all of the overnight construction in tysons and annandale should now be cleared up. let's take a live look outside first on the inbound side of i- 66 or at the beltway here at little river turnpike. no problems again as i said. things are looking good on the beltway now in annandale. back over to our maps. this time over to the other side of town. american legion bridge, no problems as you travel through bethesda, across the bridge span. we'll take a live look there as well. as you can see, south of town at the wilson bridge, things are looking good between oxon hill and alexandria. earlier accident in clinton southbound on route 5 has also been cleared. i'll be back with more traffic in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, monika. later this morning the man police say is the movie theater gunman, 24 kwr5erd james holmes -- 24-year-old james hole him will make his first appearance in court. he will be charged with shooting and killing 12 people at the opening of the latest batman movie. >> delia goncalves is tracking what's expected to happen

today. >> reporter: good morning. james holmes appears in court at 9:30. he will be represented by a public defender after he reportedly stopped cooperating with investigators, this following the disclosure that he had a booby trap in his apartment. this morning we're learning much more detail about this 24- year-old. ' plied to a online gun club. before his application was reviewed, he was denied access. we also learned on july 2 he purchased $300 of tactical equipment. that company says they are shocked and appalled that he used their equipment in the massacre. our andean mccarren -- andean mccarren who was in colorado said he made the decision to deny holmes after listening to his voice mail. >> the voice mail was a very low base guttural sounding,

rambling, incoherent deal that was strange, bizarre, a little freakish. one of my staff members called and said hey, what was the name of that person that you flagged for us? wasn't that james holmes? i said yes. they said well, that's the name of the shooter. >> reporter: close call for that company and that gentleman there. coming up at 5:30, we'll have a look at the very emotional vigil that was held on sunday to remember the 12 lives lost and the 58 victims who survived that shooting. back to you, mike, jess. >> thank you, delia. delia goncalves live in the satellite center this morning. later this morning, the ncaa is going to announce its sanctions against penn state university. the report shows the former coach joe paterno and top university officials took many steps to conceal reports that former assistant coach jerry sandusky had assaulted young boys. the ncaa is expected to impose some strong sanctions against the athletic programs at the university, including millions in finals.

the joe paterno -- in fines. the joe paterno statue was taken down over the weekend and some people were visibly disappointed. >> i drove from north carolina to get a picture of joe's statue. like a bunch of thieves they snuck it away in the night. >> joe paterno died six months ago. his name will be kept on the campus library. paterno donated millions of his own money to help get it built. convicted killer george huguely is asking a judge to suspend a lawsuit filed against him until the criminal case is settled. huguely was found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend- yardley love -- girlfriend yeardley love. a lawsuit was filed by yeardley's love. i am watching your money. wall street is going to keep its eyes on earnings this week. among the biggies coming out, apple is out with results on tuesday. facebook reports its first quarterly earnings as a public

company on thursday. we'll also get earnings news from amazon that day. traders are looking out ahead to home sales, home prices, durable goods orders and consumer sentiment. check be the numbers the dow stands this morning at 12,822, slid about 121 points on friday. nasdaq took it on the chin down nearly 41 points, down about 1.4% on the day. and the s&p 500 lost 14. among the other companies to watch, ford is on tap to post earnings this week as well. investors want to see what effect the slowdown in china and the crisis in europe is having on forbes' bottom -- ford's bottom line. ford says its plug-in new electric van will be able to go more than 40 miles on battery power alone. it's expected to be in showrooms this fall. and the number of americans living in poverty is climbing to levels not seen in nearly 50 years. the official poverty rate is

expected to rise from 15.1% to 15.7%. poverty is spreading at record levels across many groups from understand employed workers in suburban families to the poorest of the poor. more discouraged workers are giving up on the job market. obviously a very serious problem. >> which leads to the housing partial and it's a dom tea -- market and it's a dom tea effect. -- domino effect. caught on tape and still on the loose. >> police are on the look for this purse snatching punk after a brazen attack in texas. he's on the loose this morning. find out why hundreds are in the streets in anaheim, california, throwing bricks and bottles at police this weekend.

side of i-270. this is what it looks like at clopper road heading toward rockville. all lanes are open no problems on 355 or great seneca highway as well. i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic. here's what's making news at 5:09. he's accused of killing 12 people and injuring more than 60 more. 24-year-old james holmes will make his first appearance in court today. police say holmes opened fire in a colorado movie theater at the midnight showing of the latest batman movie. police say holmes planned the shooting for months spending up to $15,000 on guns, ammunition, and body armor. penn state still dealing with the sex scandal surrounding a former coach. the ncaa will hand down what's being called unprecedented sanctions against the school and the football team. on sunday the university made the decision to take down the statue of the late head football coach joe paterno. bottles, cans, and bricks flying through the air at police as they clashed with

protestors in anaheim, california over the weekend. an officer shot and killed a man on the street in front of an apartment building. that's what set this crowd off saturday. at least three people were taken into custody in a near riot after that shooting. at least three people were hurt after a portion after deck at a loudoun county house collapsed. a spokesman said the collapse happened around 4:40 yesterday afternoon on loyalty road. about two dozen people were on the deck at the time of the collapse. he says none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. prince george's county police need your help. they're trying to find this man leander cooper, 73-year-old last seen yesterday morning around 7:00. he dropped his wife off at washington hospital center on ervin street in northeast d.c. cooper suffers from dementia and has high blood pressure. he was driving a 2006 chevy trail blaze we are maryland tags 725m494. if you have any information, please call prince george's county police.

welcome back. weather time now coming up on 5:14. it is much cooler than it's been in the overnight than the last week or so but with the dampness, it sure feels like it's a lot warmer. >> it's sticky, muggy, gross kind of morning out there. >> it was nice out yesterday morning, though. it was a little cool. >> low to mid-60s in many areas. almost needed a jacket for a few. that's a memory unfortunately. we're going to be back probably in the low 90s today with a little bit of sunshine mixing in with the clouds. there will be a threat for some afternoon thunder. here's the day planner. this morning we've got some clouds early. again with the sprinkles, i don't think they're going to last very long. some midday sunshine mixing with those clouds. look how warm we get by lunch time, 88. down by 4:00. that will be the high for the day. 92, 93, somewhere in that range with the threat for the afternoon evening and thunder here and there. still in the upper #s on by

8:00 -- upper 80s by 8:00 p.m. back to where we've been over much of the summer the way it seems. northwesterly flow, showers and clouds in ohio, moving into west virginia. charlotte and row neck a better tar -- roanoke a better target for that. you see the isolated showers from jessup to bwi. they've come across montgomery county. east of davidson approaching annapolis to the bay bridge. severn river is going to see a couple of those light sprinkles as well. temperatures are running in the 70s in most areas. low to mid-70s. you see 977, the warm -- you see the 77, the warm spot. sterling and rockville and fairfax are at 72. we're sitting at 76. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, you see the droplets on the lens cover there with 76. cloudy skies at national on the hour but humidity way up at 91%. it is a muggy morning with a

light south, southwesterly wind at 6 miles an hour. nationally some very high heat once again. terrible drought conditions being exacerbated by temperatures in the low 100s from st. louis back to kansas city. chicago 99. oklahoma city 100. we'll be flirting with that heat. that's not a good thing to flirt with on and off for much of the week. so there's the high pressure with the heat right in the middle of the country. showers and storms right up and over it. and under it also scattered about in the south and in florida, it's the early morning. we've lost the daytime heating so things are quieter there. you throw in the daytime heating, we will see more showers and storms pop. for us, well, we're expecting some of that this afternoon. we should be pretty good through lunch time. watch what happens during the afternoon. 5:00 p.m. this line of showers and storms off to our north and west could be with us for the early evening hours as well. then another area of showers trying to come through overnight. 4:00 maybe a better chance up

he takes off. gabriel amber was left with scrapes and bruises. >> it was so quick. i don't have time for anything else. the cell phone flew away. i just grabbed my phone. i remember telling my friend i'll call you later and then i called the police. >> turns out the attacker took the woman's wallet and her passport. another woman who just happened to be snapping a photo of her daughter took this picture of the suspect. police are still looking for him. time now to take another look at the question of the day. the question is according to a study out of berlin, people look younger when they do one of these things. is it a, whiten their teeth, b, smile, or c, exercise. >> facebook friend joyce wilcox thinks the answer is all of the above. sh write -- she writes people look younger when they smile. exercising makes them feel like smiling and whitening your teeth can make you feel better

hits tiger. ernie els finishes at seven under but adam scott was up four with four to play so ernie is figuring i've got a second place. not a bad weekend's work. but he would go to the clubhouse and watch scott implode three straight boeing quist and -- bogeys and then this to force a playoff. ernieernie els to the winner's circle for the first time in a decade. how about that. some baseball yesterday, the nats game belonged to one man, ryan zimmerman powering the 9-2 win. he has been a different guy after the cortisone shot hitting well over .300. it preserved the nats' three and a half game lead in the al east division. they win it yesterday 9-2. the ncaa says today it will outline corrective and punitive measures against penn state university. what those measures are we don't know yet. but we know they are coming. the paterno family issuing a statement saying the statue

soupy. here's monika samtani. she has traffic momentarily. good morning, monika. >> good morning. >> howard, welcome back from vacation. >> you make me laugh in the morning. so glad to be here with you. it is muggy and sticky and just yuck. it'sicy outside -- it's icky. the muggies are here in a bad way. it's a bad hair day, monika. sorry. had some drizzle this morning. a few light showers here and there. 76 degrees. code yellow, moderate air quality so that won't be much of an issue today. noontime temps should be in the sticky upper 80s with a mix of clouds and sun and we'll have a threat for a thunderstorm or two later this afternoon into the evening hours. we should see highs in the low 90s to warmer than it has been after the unseasonably cool weekend. we've got some sprinkles here. you see more clouds and more lighter showers ohio through west virginia tracking down towards charlottesville and richmond today. better chance for them than us. look at the showers. they've now moved in, the ones we're picking up into anne

arundel county for the most part. still some drizzle, spotty drizzle here and there with your temperatures this morning mostly running in the low to mid-70s. a few 60s for martinsburg west into cup cumberland and oakland. let's go to monika, 5:29. how is it looking on timesaver traffic? >> everyone who is driving in their cars might have bad hair but at least there isn't much bad traffic i'm happy to say. things aren't looking bad early this monday morning. if you're planning to head in from dale city, woodbridge, springfield, it's that summer traffic pattern. you'll see some volume. we'll go to our camera on the northbound side of i-95. the lanes are open both in the main and hov lanes as you head for 395 and up to the 14th street bridge so we can deal with this. let's go back over to our maps this time heading in from the west. no problems on 66. you're going to see a bit of slow traffic forming manassas into centreville. we'll take a live look outside once again. you'll see traffic is moving well. here at falls received and river road no problems to report as you come in from montgomery county. i'll be back with more traffic

coming up in a few minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. just about 5:31. later this morning accused theater gunman 24-year-old james holmes will make his first court appearance today. he will be formally charged with shooting and killing 12 people in friday night's gunfire incident at the latest batman movie. delia goncalves joins us live from the satellite center. she's been track be the story and joins us now with a look at sunday's emotional vigil. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can imagine very emotional, lots of tears shed by even mere strangers in a community who are feeling the pain of this tragedy many of them still vowing this event will not change them or break them. family friends and community members gathered outside of city hall to remember the 12 lives lost in this tragedy. it appears 24-year-old james holmes, the alleged gunman

prepared for the movie theater massacre purchasing guns and tactical equipment in the past two months. he even we're told bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition prior to the shooting on a hill across from the theater now stand crosses for each of the 12 victims. >> our city will be stronger and greater because of our adversity. >> i've only been mayor for seven -- our mayor has only been mayor for seven months. i find it hard to believe. he's so strong and so wise. i've seen him percentageally as -- personally as we've gone to the hospitals and met with the victims and their families, they give him strength. >> our awareness, we're thinking about them and it might serve as some comfort. >> reporter: president obama visiting at the hospital. he visited privately with

"the washington post" is reporting the gray campaign obtain add database with the names -- obtained a database with the names of nearly 6,000 public housing efforts in a get out the vote effort. it appears to be unauthorized use of private government information. mayor gray says such information wasn't need because of his already established contacts within the public community. meanwhile 9news now has learned that mayor gray is meeting privately this week with leaders of ward 5 democrats. ward 5 has a wealth of african-

american voters in it. council chair phil mendelson will also be at the meeting. the meeting comes as a "washington post" poll show as majority of d.c. voters feel the mayor should resign because of the shadow campaign that spent more than $650,000 to help get him elected. the time right now is 5:34. i'm watching your money and your workplace. you hear about this all the time, the new eating healthy campaigns or maybe your favorite fast food restaurants is offering a healthier menu but these day people are more stressed out and less healthy despite the movements. according to the 2012 affleck work forces report, employees exercised the least in both gy and genx. what is affecting the health of these younger employees? according to the study, one factor might be a lack of

participation in company workplace wellness programs. media mogul murdoch has resigned from a number of news corps boards in britain and the until. he's stepping down as the director of ny group, times newspaper holdings and news corps. it's not clear so far which of news corps's boards murdoch has left. add extra cash for your travel if hitting the road. gas prices are rising again. according to aaa regular unleaded in the d.c. area has jumped 11 cent as gallon since the start of the month. average price 3:45. some experts predict it's going to go up another dime a gallon over the next few weeks. fewer teens are interested in getting their driver's licenses. that's bad news for automakers marketing their cars to young drivers. believe it or not, according to the study conducted by the university of michigan's transportation research institute, the percentage of 19- year-olds in the u.s. who have their licenses dropped just over 87% back in 1983 to about
