had some pretty hefty storms yesterday afternoon south of charlottesville. you can see them down here. didn't see too much in the metro. that's not a bad thing the way the storms have been going this summer. this morning, you'll notice a few showers and storms west of charlottesville tracking off towards the southeast. the temps are running in the low to mid-70s in most spots. 73 springfield. rockville is 72. 74 in upper marlboro and 76 in college park. we're looking at a hot day today as i said with the threat for a few thunderstorms this afternoon. best chance south of washington. maybe better chances toward fredricksburg with highs in the low to mid-90s. let's go to monika samtani just about 5:00 a.m. she has timesaver traffic. good morning. thank you so much. if you're planning to head around town, you see all the triangles? pretty much they should be cleared up for the morning if you're planning to head over to the west side of town, it's all construction you're looking at there. that all should be cleared up by the time you head out the

door anyway. here's what it looks like in sheverly. no issues to report on route 50, the bw parkway as you head into the northeast corridor. we're looking good on the prince george's county side of the beltway. we'll take a live look outside at route 50 and as you can see, traffic is moving well coming in from the bay bridge. no issues to report all the way that length to the beltway. back over to the maps this time southern maryland where we're looking fine on route 4, route 5, route 301, 210 out of accokeek to oxon hill and the wilson bridge. one more live look. this is going to be all the way to the north side of town on 70 east of 270 looking good out of frederick down the line on 270 toward the point where the lanes divide. i'll be back with more traffic once again at 5:10. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. today tens of thousands will crowd d.c. streets to drum up support and awareness in the fight against aids. >> the international aids conference kicked off over the weekend in d.c. and culminates with today's big march. delia goncalves joins us live from the convention center. she has a preview of what's going on today. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. going to be a very busy day

here in d.c. 30,000 people are all expected to kind of crowd the streets as you said in this march and that march includes five different protests throughout the city, everyone calling on an end to aids. the world aids conference, everyone agrees that we are close to an end to this epidemic but the main challenge remains funding. the u.s. has donated an extra $150 million to help poor countries fight the disease with medication and prevention awareness but many are now calling for what they're calling the robin hood tax on wall street that would give 50 cents per $100 of trading to hiv-aids treatment. >> the united states is committed and will remain committed to achieving an aids friegen ration -- aids free generation. >> we need to get better at this. the funding environment is very tough.

some days if feels like we're going to have to fight just to keep the funding at the level that it's at today and yet we need to put new patients on treatment. >> we need more humanity, more love if we're going to end aids. i've just been to the unfolding of the aids memorial quilt where i saw so much love for the dead. what we need now is more love for the living. >> reporter: we'll have a closer look at the epidemic here in the district of columbia. where do we stand with regards to the global aids initiative? coming up at 5:30. back to you, mike, jessica. >> thanks, delia live at the convention center this morning. the man accused in the mass shooting at a colorado movie theater made his first appearance in court on monday. >> 24-year-old james holmes appeared days. prosecutors are not sure if the suspect was medicated. yesterday's hearing was to inform him of his rights moving forward. he will eventually be charged with 12 counts of murder and

various weapons violations next monday. that will also give prosecutors some time to talk with families of the victims before they decide whether or not to seek the death penalty. on the heels of that shooting, there is a frightening story out of maine. police pull over a guy for speeding over 100 miles an hour with his lights flashing and they find his car loaded with guns and ammunition, including an assault rifle and press clippings about the colorado tragedy. he told police he brought one of those loaded guns to the batman movie at a theater in maine saturday night. >> in the car he had this assault rifle and this tactical shotgun right in the back seat of a mustang. this handgun, this handgun, that handgun and that handgun. >> police even found more guns at his home. when he was pulled over, police believe he was on his way to shoot someone he used to work for years ago. 49-year-old tim cordeus of

biffford, maine is now in custody. unprecedented. that's pretty much the only way to describe the sanctions the ncaa handed down to penn state. it's all punishment for penn state's failing to act in the sexual scandal. the ncaa placed the school on five years probation, fined it $60 million. penn state must also vacate all football wins since 1998. that's 112 in all. the ncaa also bans the football team from playing in any bowl game for the next four years and it reduced the number of scholarships the team can offer. >> no price the ncaa can levy will repair the grievous damage inflicted by jerry sandusky on his victims. however, we can make clear that the culture, actions, and inactions that allowed them to be victimized will not be tolerated in collegiate

athletics. >> the ncaa is allowing any current or incoming player to transfer to other school without penalty. the late joe paterno's family has released this statement about monday's decision. it reads in part, quote, the sanctions defame the legacy and contributions of a great coach and educator without any input from our family or those who knew him best. opinion yushing past -- punishing past, present and future students because of sandusky's crimes does not serve justice. eight not a thought fall and fair reaction. the time is 5:06. aim watching your money. stocks are going to try to regain some ground after a global sell-off yesterday. investors dumped stocks, oil, the euro on fears that spain will soon ask for a bailout and aid for greece is running dry. some analysts say greece could run out of money by september. checking the numbers from wall street, the dow stands this morning at 12,721, lost 101

points in trade yesterday. nasdaq was off by 35. that's a loss of 1.2%, the worst on the day and the s&p 500 was down by 12 points. nasdaq is raising the amount it will offer brokers who lost money because of facebook's botched initial public offering. nasdaq will pay out $62 million up from the $40 million it proposed back in june. but experiments say that probably still won't be enough. some put the trading losses at more than $200 million of the. pepsi struck a multiyear deal with the national football league to sponsor the super bowl half time show. financial terms and the exact duration of the deal was not disclosed. pepsi also bought 60 seconds of ad time during the game. the company last sponsored the show back in 2007 when prince purchased. it's interesting that it would make this move now when we've been seeing other companies moving away from the super bowl thinking they're not really getting their money's worth. >> every year the ad money goes

radar has got a couple of showers in west virginia, west of harrisonburg so not a problem for us. as we look at the day planner, a couple things to tell you. eight going to -- it's going to be a hotter day. temperatures should make low to mid-90s. could be a couple of thunderstorms this afternoon, especially south of d.c. the full seven-day forecast coming up in five minutes. right now over to monika with timesaver traffic. 395 nice and light leaving edsall road past duke street, seminary road and up to the 14th street bridge. both the main and hov lanes running at or above the speed limit. 5:10 now. it is back on the campaign trail for president obama and republican mitt romney. the two men put their campaigning on hold following friday's mass shooting in colorado. mitt romney was in southern california monday looking for support among small business owners. >> if you're employing people and hiring people, i want to see you do better. because i want more people

weather wise we've got good weather for you to start this tuesday morning. this afternoon, though, we may see a few thunderstorms but we'll see some sunshine. jessica, we will see some sunshine. >> thank you, sir. >> let's see the day planner here. we have temperatures this morning which are generally in the low to mid-70s out there. one or two spots have dipped into the 60s. look how quickly we warm up. 93 by noon. we may get to 95 today with enough sunshine. winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 and the threat for a few thunderstorms this afternoon. the damaging wind gusts, heavy downpour will be the main threat with these. the better chance of that will be south of washington as opposed to d.c. and points north. this morning we've been watching some showers and storms in west virginia and look what happened here. this thing has fallen apart as it crossed the state line. we're not going to worry about that. this morning even through midday looks quiet. it will be probably not before 3:00 or so that the radar gets busier. temperatures in the 70s and 80s. with the winds out of the west, they're coming into the lower

elevations. they compress and warm up. 28 cumberland. 86 petersburg. these are current temperatures. we're in the low to mid-70s here in the metro. you add in the sunshine and that's why we're looking at highs in the 90s. good visibility. temperatures 75 under partly cloudy skies. light southwesterly winds right now. but it's still rather muggy. dew points near 70 and the humidity up at 82%. still have the ridge in the middle of the country. you can see the storms going up and over the ridge. underneath it baking hot. temperatures in many areas in the central part of the country, kansas city, missouri, 100 to 105 once again. boy, it's been a rough, rough summer for them. for us we have the northwesterly flow. that's what's going to help bring in some showers. by noon looks like west virginia, maybe southwest pa seeing a few showers and storms. we'll get into the middle of the afternoon. here we are at 3:00. had some showers near the mason- dixon line and south and west of town.

we get toward 5:15 and maybe a few showers trying to come through here. by 7:00 not that much. maybe it's only getting to be isolated showers and storms as we go through the afternoon and evening hours. quiet tonight. a gorgeous wednesday well to our south and west may see a few showers and storms and then on thursday with the heat, well, we're going to bubble up a few afternoon thunderstorms here on thursday afternoon and evening. i think temperatures thursday could approach 100. today 94. there will be a couple of storms here and there. code yellow. this is border line yellow. a green to yellow. tomorrow will be great. we're going to start in the 60s to around 70 on wednesday with highs in the upper 80s. humidity levels are going to be nice and low. it's going to be a great, great mid summer day but by thursday, hot again with the scattered afternoon storms. back to the code yellow day. high temperatures around 100. mid-90s on friday with scattered storms. 90 on saturday with a few storms. drier, still seasonably hot sunday and monday with highs

around 90. 5:17. monika samtani with traffic. courthouse road in arlington still blocked between columbia pike and 6th street. that was because of a water main break from yesterday that caused the road to buckle. it's going to be that way for a while. but out of frederick on 270, you're fine. no problems as you head all the way down into clarksburg and to the point where the lanes divide. you can see you've got all the green down the line on 270, 355 the same story. no problems on the great seneca highway as well. let's go over to a live picture on the beltway north of town of the here's what it looks like at university boulevard. here's the outer loop heading westbound. you're going to find more volume as you travel through silver spring. once you're here no problems over to bethesda and across the american legion bridge on the west side. we'll go back over to our maps and this time heading over into virginia inside the beltway. 66 looks great in arlington. 395 in landmark, 295 as well heading up to the 11th street bridge. all the potomac and anacostia

river crossings are fine. i'll give you one example on our traffic camera. here's the roosevelt bridge nice and light this morning. another look at area roads at 5:25. 5:19 now. america is mourning the loss of a true pioneer. >> sally ride was the first american woman in space. she died from cancer. in june 1983, ride orbited the earth and it was six years after she answered an ad from nasa looking for astronauts for its mission. ride died peacefully at her home in california monday after a 17-month fight with pancreatic cancer. sally ride was just 61 years old. okay, commuters, we have a heads up for you this morning. if you use montgomery county's ride on bus service, you're going to have to deal with a rescheduled, reduced schedule for one more day. that's because the county is still working to replace a series of buses after quite a few of them caught fire. last week ike leggett, the county executive, pulled those buses from service after the seventh fire in the last three

talked about here. think about what's happened in the last 11 days. freeh report released, paterno's statue removed, ncaa sanctions delivered. that's what happened yesterday. ncaa president mark emmert stepped to the mike and lashed out at penn state calling their culture, quote, perverse and unconscionable. throughout the day yesterday, we sought the opinions of a local sports journalist. if you think emmert's language was strong, listen to this. >> i still would have liked to see the program go away for a year because if ever there was a loss of institutional control in college athletics, this was it. this was the worst tragedy in the history of college sports. >> i don't agree with the fact they did not give them the death penalty but certainly they should have the power and authority to do so. >> joe paterno moves from first on the list of all time wins to fifth in terms of major college

30,000 people we're talking about expected to line the streets of d.c. and about five different protests scattered throughout the city calling on an end to aids and an end to this especial dependic. this will -- epidemic. this will certainly be one of the highlights. this is the first time in 20 years the international aids conference has been held here in the united states and here in the district of columbia, we are dealing with our own epidemic. 3 % of the population here in d.c. is infected with h.i.v. that means doctors tell us two to three people contract the virus every ingle day -- every single day. in fact, doctors say half of all the h.i.v. positive people in the entire u.s. live in just 12 major cities. >> urban america has a serious epidemic. black america has a serious epidemic and gay america has a serious epidemic. so d.c. has a complex epidemic.

frequently we're compared to africa. d.c. is like africa. actually we're different. we can't let our guard down on condoms just because we've got medication. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00, we'll introduce you to some folks who are living with the disease that used to be considered a death sentence just three decades ago. mike, jessica, back to you. >> we will see you then. thank you, delia. she's live at the convention center this morning. he is accused of one of the biggest mass shootings in u.s. history after opening fire at a movie theater in colorado. 24-year-old james holmes made his first court appearance monday. >> he appeared dazed but prosecutors are not sure if the suspect was medicated. the hearing was to inform the suspect of his rights. holmes will be formally charged with 12 murder counts and various weapons charges on monday. that will also give prosecutors some time to talk with families of the victims before deciding whether to seek the death penalty. investigators say james

holmes legally bought his high powered rifle, his shot gun, semiautomatic handguns and 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet, all legally. gun owners practicing at a shooting range in lorton tell 9news 6,000 rounds may sound like a lot but it's not as much as you might think and putting any limits on gun purchases they say will not solve the problem. >> this is a guy in just two months apparently he put together full body armor, thousands of rounds of ammunition, semiautomatic weapon, and no one was the wiser because our gun laws make it so easy to get deadly weapons. >> i've never been arrested. never committed a crime, nor anyone else in my family. we've been around weapons all our lives. it's not the weapons or the ammunition. >> exactly just how much ammunition is 6,000 rounds? well, you can get the perspective on the colorado shooter's arsenal from peggy

fox at wusa9.com. then join the conversation about gun control on our facebook fan page. the time right now is 5:35. i am watching your money. this is some pretty tough news. about 1300 cisco system employees are losing their jobs. it's roughly 2% of the company ease payroll. -- company's payroll. they shed about 10,000 jobs a year ago. they're shedding jobs to simplify its operations and adjust to economic conditions around the word. the economy didn't specify what parts of its operations will be trimmed. two of chrysler's top selling vehicles are under investigation by the national highway traffic safety administration. drivers of ram pickups have complained of their back wheels locking and that causes them to lose control of the vehicle. the problem affects 230,000 pickups from the 2009 and 2010 model years. for the jeep grand cherokees,

the power steering fluid hoses can leak and that can cause engine fires. nhtsa says the problem affects nearly 107,000 suvs. chrysler says it will cooperate fully with both investigations. airfare is on the rise yet again for some domestic routes. after a three-month break, plane tickets are going up between 4 and ten bucks. united led the way. the rest of the major airlines followed suit including delta, american, southwest. this is the fourth time they have increased this year. however, next month the airlines plan to slash fares on their cheapest seats by 20% to 40% just in time for the fall season. coming up, looking for a bargain? daily deals coming up next. >> a deck collapse over the weekend left several people hurt. coming up next, some things to look for to make sure your deck is up to snuff.

it is 5:38. less humidity than yesterday but still on the muggy side with temperatures running in the low to mid-70s. a cold front coming will bring drier air but won't happen till later today and tonight. another warm day as temperatures quickly rise into the 90s by noon. highs could be 94, 95. a threat of a couple of storms this afternoon. could be some strong ones especially south of washington. i'll be back in about six minutes or so and look at the seven-day forecast. rightright now inside to monika with your timesaver traffic. summer traffic patterns on the northbound side of 95. as you leave dale city to springfield, this will be your heaviest stretch to the beltway and no issues all the way to downtown. more traffic at 5:49. >> see you then. you depend on the deck on your home to hold up under

coming through. well ahead of it, we've had isolated showers. they died as they came into virginia. back in january january we've got -- in indiana we've got some storms. temperatures are running into the low 80s still in cumberland, but we're in the mid-70s here in town and also pax river naval air staying, 74 out of prince frederick, 75 in bowie this morning. 70 in culpeper and winchester a warmer 77. now looking outside on our michael & son weather camera we've got 75 degrees. still muggy. humidity is 82%. clear to partly cloudy skies and light winds out of the southwest at 3 miles an hour. big time heat once again middle of the country. we've got temperatures 100 to 105 from st. louis back through much of kansas and nebraska today. oak city 101. that heat out west won't be here today or tomorrow but thursday i think we get a taste of that with near 100-degree heat. in the short-term, though, high pressure overhead in the central part of the country. that's out west.

fire with of course equipment on the scene. let's take you over to the inside of the beltway. no problems on 395, 66, 295 trying to get across the potomac and anacostia river crossings. duke street traffic is moving well up to the potomac river. back over to the maps and this time we'll head over to the other side of town. on the north side of the beltway, outer loop is beginning to slow down just a bit into silver spring but really nothing you can't handle. in fact, let's take a live look outside. here's what it looks like south of town at the wilson bridge. a good example of the beltway all around the metropolitan area. i'll be back with more traffic in a few minutes. preserve the past or make room for the future. that's the debate surrounding the controversial route 1 improvement plan near fort belvoir in fairfax county. as kristin fisher reports, the current plan puts two historic properties in the crosshairs. >> reporter: the stables has

been here for 150 years. before that, it belonged to george washington. >> the fact that we live on land that george washington owned is a big deal around here. this community really hasn't changed in the 40 years that i've lived here and i think that now that way of life is being threatened. >> reporter: wood lawn stables sits on route 1 in alexandria, the lane road to and from fort belvoir. the county has been trying -- [indiscernible] , but it took a major influx of military personnel commuting to fort belvoir for federal funds to finally be freed up. $180 million from the department of defense. it would be a godsend for commuters but laura says? >> it would destroy the stable. >> reporter: the federal highway administration is considering two options. one, build a bypass which would cut through this entire property. or they could widen in place, simply expand on the lanes that are already there but that would create a whole new set of concerns. just next door to the stables
