unharmed. the shooting unfolded. some victims say the alleged gunman, james holmes was shouting as he stalked victims. holmes remains in solitary confineme confinement. he'll be officially charged monday and the judge says cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom. meanwhile, one of the victims became a father. teresa garcia in aurora has that story. >> katie medley gave birth to her son tuesday morning there in the same hospital where katie's husband caleb is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. >> baby is doing good. katie is, she's recovering. caleb, he's still in critical condition, but he is stabilized. >> the medleys went to go see the new batman movie last friday night in aurora, colorado, for their last date before she would deliver their baby. a half hour into the movie caleb was fighting for his life with a gunshot to his eye. on tuesday, he got to meet his son. >> she put hugo in caleb's arms and she was holding his hand

when the baby was laying with caleb and his blood pressure and his heart rate went up. we know that he could hear her. >> also in the hospital, batman star christian bale. the actor visited with is survivors. he posted this photo had his facebook page >> we're learning more about what happened inside the theater. early reports suggested the gunman said nothing during the shooting. but at least two people who were there disagree. >> stephanie davies kept her friend from bleeding to death from a gunshot to the neck. off camera she told reporters, "he would shout what are you doing? i said stand up and he would pick people up. i saw him stand over someone. i see hair and him holding the shirt and boom." james holmes is being held without bail. teresa garcia, cbs news, aurora colorado. there's been a surge in gun sales following the massacre. in the three days after the

massacre, 2900 background checks have been approved for people seeking to buy a gun. that's a 25% increase over the average friday to sunday period this year. house and senate leaders in both parties have no plans to bring up the issue of gun control this election year. a fund has been set up for the victims of the colorado shooting. so far nearly $2 million have been donated. warner brothers, the studio that released the batman film that was playing at the time of the attack, gave an undisclosed amount to that fund. overnight, violent demonstrations over police shootings in anaheim, california. there have been four days of protests following the deadly police shootings of two men. one apparently unarmed. last night at least five people were arrested as city officials voted to ask the u.s. attorney to investigate. the family of one of the men shot by police has filed a $50 million lawsuit. the police union says both men were gang members with criminal records. to politics now. mitt romney begins a week-long visit to britain, israel and poland today. foreign policy replaced the economy as the key topic on the

campaign trail. before he left, he delivered his toughest critique yet of the policy. he wants investigation of white house leaks. susan mcginnis has more. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. ahead of this multination trip, romney changed the conversation to foreign policy and went on the attack trying to use national security issues to beef-up his presidential qualifications. mitt romney unleashed some of his harshest attacks of the president yet. speaking to the veterans of foreign wars, he criticized the president on several fronts. including leaks of classified information from the white house. >> this isn't a partisan issue. it's a national security crisis. >> the white house says it has zero tomorrow rans for top secret leaks and appointed investigate rs to find the culprits. romney says there needs to be an independent investigation. >> obama appointees accountable

to obama's attorney general should not be responsible for investigating the leaks from the white house. >> romney attacked the president forever pushing for cuts in defense spending and alienating israel and other u.s. allies. he used the speech as a springboard to his trip to england, poland and israel. >> president obama is fond of lecturing israel's leaders. the people of israel deserve better than that. >> vice president biden says romney criticized the president's policy while offering no alternatives. the president defended his foreign policy achievements. >> because of the outstanding efforts of our men and women in uniform, we were able to end the war in iraq as i promised. and al qaeda is on the run and we got bin laden. >> a new wall street journal poll shows the president with a ten-point lead on the question of who would make the better commander in chief. >> romney attend the opening ceremonies for the limb nicks in lon donned and in israel, he'll

meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. susan mcginnis. thank you so much. also overseas. turkey announced it's closing its border with syria. government forces are using fighter jets and helicopters to target rebel troops in syria's largest city aleppo. another top syrian general defected. growing international condemnation. david martin has our report. >> israel has started issuing new gas masks to citizens living close to the syrian border. a barometer of the increasing concern overseer i can't's arsenal of chemical weapons. pentagon officials say syria has the largest operational, that is ready to use, stockpile in the world. now, a spokesman for the syrian foreign ministry has talked openly about using them. >> these weapon are meant to be used only and strictly in external a gres against the

restaurants, movie theaters and stadiums. on tuesday, the board of health, which has the final say by the way, heard arguments from both sides. the proposal to restrict the sizes of sugary drinks has been cheered by health experts while scoffed at by the food industry. it's an encroachment on -- >> this will shut down production of movie theaters, pizza places, restaurants, coffee shops and even ice cream parlors will be affected by this ridiculous ban. >> i'm not overweight because of big gulp sodas. i eat too much pasta. >> a community activist hailed it saying it's an attack on poor communities. >> i've been deeply offended by what the beverage industry has tried to do here. they have not admitted that the real factor here is economics. >> the health board's commissioner pointed out that the restriction is not an out right ban on soda. and won't stop someone from gulping down as much as they want. >> people certainly have that

option. but studies show that people are very much driven by the portion sizes that are given to them. so if default portion size is 24 ounces or 32 ounces, people are likely to drink that. if the default is 16 or less, they'll drink that and feel satisfied. >> this isn't the first time that the mayor has gone on the offensive concerning junk feud. in 2008, necessity banned the use of transfats from city staunts and required them to post calorie counts on menus. bloomberg says it's an effort to curb obesity which kills more than 5,000 new yorkers a year. michelle miller, he brushed aside the argument his administration is playing big brother. >> i just heard someone on the radio say you are legislating the joy out of life for new yorkers. >> oh, come on. we're not taking away anything. you don't have to pay attention to the calorie counts. you don't have to stop buying big bottles of soda. >> the city's health board makes the final decision in september. new york isn't the only place trying to restrict sugary

financial impact from the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. it may cut the school's credit rating making it more expensive for penn state to borrow money and state farm insurance is pulling ads from football broadcasts. that is on top of the $60 million fine the ncaa is ordering the university to pay. well, ford is going head to head with lexus in the luxury sedan market. the car maker introduced the lincoln mkz which will be priced $175 below the lexus es-350. ford will also offer a hybrid version that will be nearly $3,000 less than lexus's hybrid. you might want to watch your language at work, especially if the boss is around. a new survey by career builder finds 64% of employers think less of workers who use profanity on the job and 57% say they would be less likely to promote an employee who uses dirty words. the survey also found the

lorton. we'll go back over to our maps this time to the north side where the beltway is looking good. no problems on 95. from baltimore, route 29 all of your major corridors in from aspen hill and wheaton and 270 as well. montrose road, nice and light through rockville. we'll have more traffic at 4:39. >> thanks, monika. at least 70 people need a place to say after a fire rips through four floors of a prince george's county apartment building. >> it broke out at a complex in district heights. residents were able to make it out safely but they were left to watch their belongings burn. ken molestina spoke with the survivors. >> couldn't nobody do. they were screaming. >> reporter: prince george's county fire officials confirm a dog is in fact unaccounted for. the massive blaze burned through a total of 22 apartments. it was a police officer who noticed the fire and called for help. by the time firefighters got here, all four floors of the

building were bursting with flames and smoke. >> it was terrible. just like that. like it happened all of a sudden. >> reporter: many residents like linda pierce were inside their apartment building when the commotion broke out. she said it was yelling and people screaming telling them to get out of their apartments fast. she was able to get her cats and bolt for the door. >> i was not going to leave my pets in there to get burned. i couldn't do that. >> reporter: you can still see the heavy haze. firefighters from all over the county were called out to try and battle this blaze. many of the firefighters were also treated for fatigue and minor smoke inhalation. investigators say the fire originated on a first floor apartment. the flames rose up from above and left the building in ruins. >> it was well advanced and had a head start on it. >> reporter: prince george's county officials as well as the red cross are on scene. they will assist these folks in finding a place
