she was found this morning near her home in harford county. she was unharmed. so far investigators are saying that she was approached by a man with a gun who forced her into his car and fled. we're still getting information and details on this story. we will bring you that information throughout the afternoon on our website wusa9.com and of course on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. dozens of residents are living in a high school right now that has been turned into a shelter because of a fire that occurred in prince george's county. flames raced through their apartment building on rochelle avenue in district heights last night. crews say the three-story building was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. the fire burned for some time before a passing police officer saw the smoke. he immediately called for help. >> we have to remember the risk versus benefit. we don't want to risk much -- we will risk much to save much.

so when we arrived on the scene, we found heavy fire conditions. we waited till we had adequate water supply. we went inside and started to knock the fire down. by the time we were called, it was well advanced and had a head start on us. >> thanks to that officer, everyone in the apartment building was able to escape. the cause of the fire is being investigated. damage is estimated at about $500,000. prince george's county police are waiting the results of a toxicology test on a man who drowned in laurel last night. 21-year-old calise omar richardson was pulled from a pond at the willow lake apartment complex off route 197. emergency crews arrived on the scene after witnesses reported they saw richardson go into the water and he failed to come out. he was rushed to the hospital. unfortunately doctors were unable to save him. the toxicology results are

expected in about six weeks. police in arlington are dealing with their first murder in more than two years.  it is believed that this is a murder-suicide. police found the bodies of a man and a woman yesterday afternoon on 31st street south in the park shirlington apartments. they say the two had a relationship and they lived together in the neighborhood. the victims' names have not been released. amtrak is announcing plans today for an ambitious makeover at union station. the passenger train service will propose a $7 billion plan to overhaul the commuter hub. in addition to more passengers, the move is designed to double the number of trains that the station can handle. union station is already the second busiest amtrak station in the country. normal ride on bus service in montgomery county has been restored. buses have been running on a holiday schedule because of a

fire that occurred last week. it prompted the county to pull dozens of buses out of service. and there's another showdown on capitol hill today over taxes. democrats are trying to push through a bill that extends tax cuts for everyone, but the country's top -- everyone but the country's top earners. we have more on the ongoing budget battle. >> reporter: an election-year showdown over taxes is unfolding on the senate floor. >> our bill has the support of president obama, has the support of the democratic caucus and has the support of the american people. >> reporter: senate democrats are trying to extend some bush era tax cuts. their proposal sticks with president obama's goal of extending cuts for couples earning $250,000 a year or less and letting them expire for higher income earners. republicans want to extend the tax cuts for everyone. >> whether we think it's a good idea to raise taxes on nearly a million business owners at a moment when millions of

americans are struggling to find work. >> reporter: if the two sides do not come to an agreement before the end of the year, it will trigger tax increases and spending cuts, something lawmakers are calling the fiscal cliff. those cuts include drastic reductions to the military budget and domestic programs including medicare and education. >> it's astonishing to me that the democrats would go to these lengths just to raise taxes on our country's economic engine. >> reporter: neither the democratic or republican plan is expected to make it out of the senate today. both sides want the other to go on record on taxes. >> finally the couple middle class tax cuts from those for millionaires and billionaires. >> reporter: the republican controlled house has already passed an extension of all bush era tax cuts 34 times and plans another vote next week. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. about 30 penn state

football players say they are sticking with the school despite devastating sanctions levied by the ncaa. although he did not mention jerry sandusky's name, one of the players said he and his teammates will not let the program be torn down by one man. a scathing investigative report found former coach joe paterno helped cover up the child sex abuse scandal. another senior on the team calls his teammates true penn staters who will stick out the sanctions rather than take the option of transferring to another school. still to come when 9news now continues, there are olympic size headaches in london. we'll have details just ahead. and police clash with protesters in southern california for a fourth night. we'll have details on those stories and more in just a moment.

experiencing traffic gridlock. they're losing lanes on the highway that have been designated for olympic traffic only. the games lanes as they are called went into effect this morning, and drivers are frustrated. >> appalling. appalling. that's all i can say really. >> the games lanes are designed for athletes, officials, and v.i.p.es. if a not very important person is using one of those lanes, they will be fined $200. meanwhile here in this country, investigators are trying to determine how many people contacted hepatitis c from an infected hospital worker. the worker appeared in court yesterday in new hampshire. prosecutors call him a serial infecter. they say that david kostowsky injected himself with

painkillers meant for patients and then returned the syringes for general use. dozens of people were infected by hepatitis c which is considered among the worst of the hepatitis viruses. investigators are taking a closer look at other hospitals where he worked. these are tense times in southern california where police clashed with protesters in anaheim for a fourth night. two fatal police shootings over the weekend sparked this violence. edward lawrence has more now from los angeles. >> reporter: police officers fired pepper spray balls at hundreds of demonstrators in anaheim. the crowd threw rocks and a molotov cocktail at police, lit trash cans on fire and smashed store windows. 24 people were arrested. protesters are demanding to know why police used deadly force in two weekend shootings. the family of one man who believes -- one man believed killed saturday has filed a lawsuit defense the city.

>> en unarmed man -- an unarmed man shot in the back, shot in the back of the head and killed once he falls to his knees. >> reporter: police say 24-year- old emmanuel diaz was acting suspiciously with two other men and ran away from officers. he did not stop when ordered to and threw something on the roof of an apartment complex. the two officers involved are now on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. the shootings have sparked four days of unrest. on tuesday rioters threw chairs and rocks through windows of a starbucks. >> i was actually sitting in the corner when a rock hit the window. >> reporter: the anaheim city council has approved a resolution calling for a federal investigation into the shootings. edward lawrence for cbs news, los angeles. coming up, howard has the forecast in just a moment. >> jc, a beautiful day out here. humidity levels way down. really, really comfortable stuff. unfortunately some high heat comes tomorrow. one thing i want to tell you, the allergens are way up there.

of relevant to today, isn't it? >> absolutely is relevant to today. one of the fascinating things about it, a lot of times we don't think certain situations people can find themselves in. but when they do, is there any hope of redemption, forgiveness and understanding that comes in the mid-st of a story like this. that's one of the things we're going to provide. the audience definitely needs to see this. >> there are actually two performances, one day saturday. most people know about the eadvantage gel cathedral -- evangel cathedral christmas performance with animals, lots of people and stars. but this is just as good. it gets you into the theater for many people who have not had an opportunity to see live theater. >> absolutely, especially with it being a highly theatrical town. we try to provide entertainment for the family to come out. this is a production that you don't want to miss.

weeks between my time off and your time off. a glorious day. humidity levels down. blue skies. a nice deep blue, not the hazy sun we get. comfortable, dry air. already 84. we're going to make a run toward 90 but it's a good 90 today because the humidity levels are so low. the air is so dry and comfortable. wind northwesterly at 5 will turn more southwesterly as we get into the evening. that wind direction change, that means we're going to take this beautiful air mass and kind of push it on out of here unfortunately. it's going to be real hot by tomorrow even. 81 by 9:00. just a biefl evening if you've -- beautiful evening if you've got outdoor plans, want to take a walk with your wife, husband, the dog, it's going to be great to be out. had some showers and storms in the carolinas this morning. they're dissipating quickly. next closest thing is way up into michigan now. we've go weather problems whatsoever today and the sign of the dry air, look at the dew points n. is a real true measure of how moist the air is

opposed to humidity dependent on the temperature. we have dew points in the low 50s now. the real dry air has moved in. our dew point is 52. you see the sticky stuff. charleston, up toward lexington 60s and 70s. that's not that far away. that will be coming back late tonight into tomorrow. temperatures with the dry air 70s and 80s. look at ocean city, beautiful there today, 79. it's 83 in richmond but only 76 up in pittsburgh or the burg as my pittsburgh friends like to call it. oakland is only 70. they were in the 50s this morning in garrett county. it's 28 across the bay in cambridge. 84 for la plata and the pax river naval air station, we've got 81 degrees. look at this shot on the michael & son weather camera, the capitol dome looks absolutely gorgeous this afternoon. 84. the air is dry. the winds are calm. humidity only 33%. you really don't get days better than this in the month of july very often. showers and storms once again pounding the upper midwest and

the great lakes. once again we've got this big, huge area of high pressure right over the middle of the country. they're having a really tough summer. places like kansas city, st. louis. drought conditions, temps 100 to 10 5. that's persisting. for us we've got a northerly flow bringing down the air from canada giving us a nice day today. today the futurecast, all is well. sunshine today. clear skies to partly cloudy skies tonight, especially up north. tomorrow temperatures are going to soar. we're going to be near 100 for the high in the afternoon. with that heat, more humidity. it's going to be sticky, too. we're going to pop some showers and storms in the afternoon. maybe a couple of strong ones by 3:00. got a yellow alert for tomorrow due to the fact we'll probably have a heat advisory. and i'm thinking we could get a couple of storms. we get into friday, look at this setup with more showers and storms as we get into friday afternoon and evening hours. some of these could also be on the hefty side. another yellow alert sort of a day. as we break down the forecast, you're going to love t. today 88 if not close to 90 before the day is out but again low
