5:33 pm
>> i think i was more anxious, maybe a little nervous for minicamps and ota's, but now been through the offense and you know, had a trial at it, got a taste of how fast the game is and just what i need to do as a quarterback to help this team win. felt comfortable. so it is more relaxing and you know, there's nothing else going on outside of football anymore, you know, we are in training camp. we are on lockdown. for a guy like me, it's a good thing. >> you have a comfort level with the teammates. >> it's all smiles in the locker room. so when you see guys you haven't seen in a while and you have that comradery, it is good. we have built great relationships and the leaders are stepping up, trying to make this successful. >> the receiver is knowing the guys. >> throwing with the guys over the break and doing those types of things to get you more familiar with them and you can really see who is truly

5:35 pm
>> how do you balance all the celebrity and getting ready for your nfl season? >> i mean, it's great and easy to balance that now because the team doesn't look at me that way. they don't look at me like a celebrity. i'm the quarterback and i'll lead them to victory, but there's no celebrity. there's no autographs in the locker room for the most part. and you know, i'm not rg3 to them, i'm just robert. so that's good to be around those guys for these next, you know, couple weeks and into the preseason. it's going to be really good to bear down and focus on football. >> how about outside of football? you saw award shows, do you put that completely on the back burner? >> i'm not going in the award shows and doing commercials during the season. all that is done, you know, i did my work in the offseason, whether it was with marketing or just football work, making sure i stayed in shape and
5:36 pm
stayed on top of the play book. i made sure i did all that, while making sure i handled my business. >> was there any reluctance to put yourself out there, considering you are an unproven product at the nfl level? >> you are only unproven if you think you are unproven. i'm not proven, but i don't think i'm unproven either, it's a hard way to answer that, but i get what you are saying. the only thing i made sure i stayed with was companies i truly believe in and not just doing things to get money. so you know, it was a great experience doing all those things, you know, everybody wants to be in a gatorade commercial. i enjoyed that, but aside from that, it's all about football. >> did you talk to a guy saying, hey, if i'm out doing that stuff, how is this going to be perceived in. >> we wanted to make sure i

wasn't, you know, doing too much before i had played. but the situations that arose, you know, seemed fine and i mean, if it wasn't good, i would have felt it in the locker room. but when all the guys showed up, most of them were laughing or just saying they were cool. i think it rubbed the team the right way and the biggest thing is, it's not just about me, it's about the redskins and they definitely realize that. >> you said you had your play book with all your trips when and whatnot. i know you had the ipads. how did you stay mentally sharp night in, night out, just you on your own and making sure you didn't forget about a lot of the stuff. >> we didn't have ipad until we got back. i was carrying around that pamphlet, that big book. so i just made sure i spent the right amount of time in the play book, but didn't try to kill myself with it, either. you know, you either know
5:38 pm
something or you don't know something. it was refreshing, seeing what i liked. writing down questions for the coordinator and quarterback coach and making sure that i asked about those things. i think it paid off for me, definitely going to do things that i like, the receivers like, and that's what you need to do, because players play, coaches coach, but we are the ones that have to make the plays and a will the of the guys are going to like what they do. >> the players playing, what was the routine when the guys were down? how many days did you do it? >> we went twice a day. i wanted those guys to get a feel for who i was, you know, sometimes you can try to explain to somebody where you are, who you come from, it's best to show them sometimes. i wanted to get down there, go through a workout with the bailor team and see how we worked and those types of things. you can ask santana about it. he really liked it. you know, felt like it was something we should definitely,
5:39 pm
certain aspects bring out here to washington and you know, i thought it was a very productive as far as throwing and productive as far as us being able to bond. >> you hadn't signed yet, who paid for dinner? >> well, i was going to pay for all the dinners, but i think a couple other guys covered that. they said something about tax breaks and business stuff. so you know, i let them go ahead and take that burden. you know, i just don't want to say how many guys came down, for the guys that didn't come down, out of respect for them. >> back in april, even before you were drafted, you kind of knew that you would be the face of a franchise. now that it is this franchise with these playoff starved fans and the three first round pix that were given up, how much do
5:40 pm
you embrace the idea of being the face of this franchise? >> it was really only two, because i'm here. that's the other pick. but it's a blessing, you know, nobody gets a chance to come to the capitol city of the united states and play and be the quarterback in that town. i definitely look at it as a blessing. the fans are definitely starved for success, but i think the players in the locker room are starved for success as well. they want to show people what they are made of and whether we are ranked first in the poll or fourth in our division, whatever it is, i don't think anybody that locker room really cares. we know what we have to do and we have to play and let your play dot talking. so i'm very proud to be a part of this franchise. >> do you like the idea of the face of the franchise? >> i mean, there's no true face of the franchise, because if we all had faces, we would all be dead. there has to be a heart, has to be some legs, arms, some skin.
5:41 pm
so i'm just the mask. those guys are the ones that make up the body of this team. >> how much contact have you had with kyle over the last six weeks? >> enough contact that we didn't get in trouble, i guess. you know, we talked. i tried to keep it to a minimum just because, you know, i knew this was coming and guys can get burnt out. if you are constantly calling your coach and asking questions, he can get burnt out as well. i try to respect the fact that those guys are on vacation, but if i needed to ask a question, i called him up. >> do you know the play book better now than you did when you left here even though you haven't been on the field with the coaches? >> oh yeah, i mean, we are going to go over and do days the same way we did in ota's. i think from that aspect, i know a little bit more because i'll hear it and i won't just hear the basis. i can dig deeper into it now.
5:42 pm
but you know, when it comes to knowing that play book, no one knows that play book 100%. it's about knowing what you have to do. our job is to stay on the field and score points. >> robert, has a good bit of the play book been models what you do best? and put you in a familiar situation where some of what you do will look like what you did at baylor? >> that's the market of good coaching. they will help you do things that you are used to doing. put you in situations that you are used to being in. of course i never played in the nfl, so that will be adjusting. they will do the things they feel i do best. it's not just me. every year is a different team. different players and those players do things differently and do things well and some things not so well. whatever we do extremely well, that's what we'll run with. >> always enjoyed coaching and the technical aspects, that type of thing? >> yeah, i definitely do. i respect my coaches, you know.
5:43 pm
i know as a professional, some guys look eye to eye and that will take adjusting, too, but i respect coaching and i like to have that, but you know, like kyle told me the other day, he said he's here to help me, not necessarily to coach me. i already know how to play football. he is just here to help me find my way through the nfl. >> have you upgraded yet since you have gotten the contract? >> unfortunately, my dad sold my chrysler pacifica, so i don't have my college anymore, but i have a nissan and an audi. i didn't have to spend any money on those, but it's a good deal to have two free cars. >> of the attention, rub your teammates the right way, do you sense it motivated them? >> yeah, i mean, i was talking to bring twitter into the playing field. i was talking to miles on

twitter and he was laughing. i think it was the gatorade one. i told him, i'll keep throwing him the ball and one day he'll have his own commercial. it's not about being in the spotlight unless you are doing it for the right reason. it's less about myself and more about helping this team getting back to where they want to be. they want us to be in the forefront. they want us to be talked about in a good way, not a bad way. i think those guys look at it as, we have our chance to have a spotlight. >> robert, you said something earlier in the press conference, that you are just robert, not rg3, is that who you want to be? >> you can't be. you can't be approachable if you are larger than life or they think you are larger than life. you have to be able to talk to them, you know, be real with them. i think that's the biggest thing and i try to be real with all my teammates. and if they want to call me rg3, they can call me whatever
5:45 pm
they want. i think that persona of rg3, as far as a fan doesn't really, it's not the same feeling for those guys in the locker room. >> you have known you would get a good contract. when you got it, was it overwelm to see the bonus payment and all that? >> you know, my parents brought me up pretty good and i got a lot of faith in god, so i try not to let anything affect me too much, but it was exciting to sign. you know, not for the money, but it's the final sign that i have definitely made it to the nfl, not made it in the nfl, but it was exciting. so i was very excited, very proud of that moment. >> robert, asked about you. i'm sure you have seen it. but this nickname, we call him bob, he hasn't done anything yet. by october 21 when you guys meet, do you think they'll know who you are?
5:46 pm
>> one of my coaches at baylor called me bob. nobody really calls me bob, but if that's what he wants to call me, it's fine. he doesn't have to call me rg3 at all. i have not other than the pep rally after i got drafted. we'll have rookie shows soon, doing some skits. we'll see what happens. >> you are going to shut down your twitter account, once the season started, do you plan on doing that? >> as far as getting rid of it, probably not. as far as tweeting goes, probably not too much tweeting because you know, we don't plan on losing any games, but you can't tweet when you win and not tweet when you lose, so might as well not tweet all together. >> from a competition standpoint, how receptive are you to coaching? in the heat of it, you are playing, how do you handle coaching during games? are you even no matter when the
5:47 pm
score is high or score is low, that type of thing? >> you have to show emotion, you know, it's just about being able to control your emotion. so i play. i'm an emotional player. i know how to control my emotion. if we're down and the team needs a jolt of energy, i know how to do that. if we're up and we need to execute, i know how to do that. it's about knowing how to manage multiple situations and when it comes to coaching on the sideline, sometimes you see coaches and players get into heated arguments. sometimes it's more pretty than other times, but as long as you are both fighting for the same goal, you can overcome anything. >> this offseason hire a wild ride with the attention and all that. and has it been, i know -- has it been hard at times to stay grounded the way you want to? >> i don't know how to answer that. i try to stay grounded the whole time and just, we live in
5:48 pm
a right now world. it is mostly, what have you done for me lately? right now, the only thing i have been good for for the redskins is fan popularity and the fan base being really excited to come out and support us through this season. so i just try to make sure i stay focused, continue to work, and act like i'm not undrafted free agent who is trying to make the team and just go out and perform that way. >> last year, cam newton put up video game numbers, 4,000 passing yards, 700 rushing yards. when you look at what he was able to do, did you think in your mind that that's the kind of numbers i might be able to put up as a rookie in the nfl? >> you know those stats pretty well. i don't really pay attention to them. i was never a stats guy, don't really believe in them. just feel like you have to do to help your team win. cam is looking to do big things
5:49 pm
this year. i don't try to compare myself to anybody else. >> get back to the past couple of weeks, has anything been overwelming to you? have you been able to handle it? the endorsements? have you -- at any point feel overwelmed? >> no, not overwelmed. just extremely happy that everything is going smoothly. try to stay even keel and now that it's football time, all that stuff can be put behind, it's fun to do the commercials and all that type of stuff and definitely fun to sign a contract, but you know, now it's about playing football. >> what is the first speech if you haven't given it already for your teammates, what is that going to be like? >> i mean, right now the speech duties are going to london fletcher. so i'm not going to try to trump him on those. but if i ever had to just sit back and tell those guys
5:50 pm
anything, you want to be certified, you know, one thing i have talked to the rookies about before, if you're the baddest guy in your group, then you have a problem. you don't need to be hanging out with guys that aren't as certified as you are. we have to make sure that everybody on this team is certified and by that, there's a word that comes after it, but i'm not going to say it in front of this mic. you have to be certified and that lets everybody know, he is going to take care of his business, so that's what we have to do. can't just be a one-man show. i'm not going to try to make it a one-man show. it's about all of us going out there and executing football. >> did you talk about going through the play book and taking notes, having questions, is there a particular aspect that you are looking forward to hitting hard when you are out there on the field? >> i mean, just you know, getting productive plays. you know, i thought the defense
5:51 pm
did a good job of limiting us to certain things. you know, we had our big plays and great days, but i felt like they did a good job. for me, it's about making sure we go out every day and when we walk off the practice field, we feel good about what we did. there were a couple days we didn't feel good about what we did. that's a good time for our defense that they are playing so well. i know as an offense, our job is to put up points, stay on the field and give that defense some rest sometimes when they have those long drives. >> do you know how much you'll play in the preseason games? >> i don't know. that's up to coach. >> a will the of people are worried about you getting hurt when you run the ball. are you going to take off? are you a slider, step out of bounds guy? lower your shoulder every once in a while? >> i told people this from the get go. if i need to slide or run out of bounds, i'll run out of bounds. if it's 4th and 1, i don't care who the linebacker is, i'm going to try to get in that end
5:52 pm
zone. if it's in the first quarter, i'll be sliding and running out of bounds with the best of them. if the game is on the line, don't expect me to try to slide or get out of the way. so i don't look at sliding or running out of bounds as a shot to my pride. i've done it before, you know, it's a matter of, this is the nfl, guys are faster, bigger, stronger, they hit harder. so you know, i'll respect that. i'll respect my teammates by making sure i stay healthy and make sure the fans stay happy as well. >> what part of your game translates best to profootball? >> i don't know. the ability to lead. i think guys, i have said it before, to people i talk to, if you are a good player in high school, you can be a great player in college. it's just about what you do to make sure you are successful. don't let anybody tell you that your game doesn't translate,
5:53 pm
you know, they might have told darren that and look what he is doing now. same thing goes for drew brees. so i just try to make sure i don't listen to too much and hear people say, well his game doesn't translate and just go out and play and show people, not show them up, just show them hey, it doesn't matter who you are, how tall you are, you can play in the nfl if you take care of business. >> do you you are used to a will the of attention at baylor. is there anything about the coverage or expectations that may have surprised you? like wow, i didn't realize it would be this big? >> i mean, to me, it's a similar situation to the one i was at in baylor. the program had been starved for success for a long time and we came out, made sure we took care of business and got the program back on top. so it's at a larger scale here in d.c. and i realize that, but
5:54 pm
i'm not going to put unnecessary pressure on my shoulders when i know it's more of a team thing. all these guys are professionals. everybody was somebody at some time. it's about making sure they are that person, you know, when we play on sundays or mondays. >> did you really get sticker shock when you were looking for a place to live? >> yeah. i'm not a spender of money. i don't like to spend money that much. the prices was ridiculous, but we handled that. and then it's nice out here, it's like a jungle. a will the of bugs. a lot of trees. a lot of allergies, but it's definitely fun. i'm a chill guy, so i don't usually do too much. it's definitely stuff to do whether you are here in virginia or in d.c. >> do you have allergies? >> no. yeah, i have allergies, okay.
5:55 pm
>> you said d.c., it has the bugs and you haven't felt a d.c. summer with its humidity. how are you going to keep everyone motivated day in and day out? >> i take this d.c. humidity over texas heat any day. so you know, i feel comfortable out here. but it will be fun. as long as you don't pay attention to the elements and let them play a factor, then you should be okay. i mean, if it's cold outside. i have seen guys do it before. i probably won't, but they play football with no shirts on when it's 20 degrees outside. it's about your mind set. if you come outside saying man, it's hot, you're probably going to have a bad day. >> you lifted at 217, did you intentionally lose a couple pounds? >> no, i'm actually 225 today. but it doesn't matter to me what my weight is. one of the vets told me, in college they tell you to weigh a certain weight, but in the pros, you play what you are
5:56 pm
comfortable at. as long as i'm 218 to 225, i should be fine. >> it sounds like staying humble has helped you gain the trust and respect of your teammates. are you the first guy in, last guy out kind of a player? >> i think they see how hard i work. how hard a lot of these guys work. i talk about little things, whether it is picking up on what fletcher has done to last so long, or conquer so long in the league. league. >> as good natured we have come to expect, that is robert griffin, iii. one day prior to the start of training camp. he told us he has enjoyed the whirlwind of fame, all the endorsements and promotional opportunities, now it's time to bare down and get ready to play
5:57 pm
football. the best news out of that press conference is, he has gotten rid of that chrysler pacifica and has a new audir8. we have to go.
5:58 pm
5:59 pm
this is 9news now. >> we begin with some sad breaking news out of prince william county tonight. police say a four-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself has died. it happened this afternoon on empire street in woodbridge. police
