happened in a parked vehicle on the street. no one else was hurt. gary will have more on this accidental shooting tonight at 11:00. also tonight, the mother of baseball's iron man, cal ripken, is back with her family after being kidnapped at gunpoint. a man approached violet ripken yesterday morning outside her home. someone spotted her last night in baltimore county before she was found back in hartford county this morning. scott broom is live in aberdeen with more on the investigation into this kidnapping. scott. >> reporter: this is just a bizarre case. police told us this afternoon there was no ransom demanded in this case and a close friend and neighbor who was here with cal ripken, the family, when they were reunited with their mother today said they got the impression from mrs. ripken that she thought this attacker had no idea who she was. >> she was shook up. >> gus, himself shaken up by what happened to his close friend, the widow next door, vi

ripken. >> he was lighting cigarettes if she would want them, they were just talking in general. >> he demand money or threaten her? >> i don't think he threatened her. he said he was very nice, actually. of course ted bundy was nice, too. >> we don't know what, if any relationship there was between the perpetrator of this crime and ripken family. we know of no ransom. >> aberdeen, maryland, police said ripken was surprised at gunpoint. he forced her into a car and police said he drove apparently randomly throughout central maryland. her wrists were duct taped and she sat in the back for hours according to her neighbor. then a break at this baltimore county store when a caller told baltimore county police about a woman apparently restrained in a car. police matched the license plate to ripken and started a

search. the kidnapper then abandoned the car with mrs. ripken restrained inside here on her street just before 6:00 this morning. >> i don't think from what she was saying that he knew much about her. >> i doubt if that person knows her. >> so neighbors are mystified about this just like police. you look at the house here, you have to realize her son is worth $75 million. the iron man. she is 74, she is fiercely independent, she likes living here alone. police tonight are looking for a suspect, a white man, tall, thin build, they said he was wearing a light colored shirt and camo jeans with eyeglasses on. the man hunt is on tonight. reporting live in aberdeen, 9news now. new at 6:00 tonight, another day in court. the former university of virginia lacrosse player appeared with his mother and

attorneys in charlottesville. they were there when a judge ruled that cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom for his sentencing next month. he was convicted in february of murdering his exgirlfriend, yeardley love. cameras in the courtroom could hinder his right to a fair trial. two prince georges county police officers are being called heros tonight after a fire at a district heights apartment building. >> i'm bruce leshan, from blocks away, a police lieutenant sees a column of smoke rising. he and a corporal rush into this burning building to rescue a half dozen people who have no idea their lives are in danger. >> i think it's human instinct. >> the lieutenant and corporal, rickie, say they will never forget what they found. >> this is the area right here behind us where the dogs were out on the balcony. >> flames roaring across the back of the building from the first floor up through the roof. >> when i got here, i could

hear screams of people, but then i heard blood curdling screams. i wasn't sure what it was. >> nobody could do anything for that dog. that dog was screaming. >> the two officers rushed around to the other side of the burning building to get more people out. investigators know that the fire started here on the outside on the first floor, but they are not sure what sparked it. dozens of people are homeless, just trying to salvage what they can. in district heights, bruce leshan, 9news now. >> turning now back to those deadly shootings inside the movie theater in colorado. today, we learn that the suspect in the case actually mailed a notebook to a psychiatrist. that notebook outlines huh he was going to kill people. that package sat unopened inside a mail room until it was all over monday morning. the first memorial service for one of the people killed in last friday's rampage was held today. gordon was in that movie tw two

going to replace the trains between springfield and vandoran street. >> more than $3 million to expand bike paths. a nearly half mile connection between the anacostia trail system in prince georges county and the washington, d.c. river trail. another major project is extending the three notch trail in st. mary's county. and speaking of bike, expanding the number of bike lanes in the district was part of mayor vincent gray's one city action plan announced today. painting lanes green, so we drivers can see them better. mayor gray also wants to increase the number of bike share stations. the mayor also called for the city to strengthen government accountability, promote neighborhood opportunities, invest in stainability, and expand affordable housing as part of this comprehensive plan. still ahead tonight, the fight over plans to renovate the alexandria waterfront. we'll tell you how you can have your say coming up.

yawn union station, as we know it, may be going away. transform the building into a world class transportation hub complete with shopping and residential space. that plan also has one big question mark. who is going to pay for it? armando trull has more. >> it's a $7 billion plan. the city, the feds, all say that the money still isn't here. but they believe that by presenting this plan and saying they will build it, the money will come. the station was built in 1907, the latest renovation decades ago. this is what the second busiest train station in america will look like by 2030 if amtrak gets its way. >> >> it's part of the vision for

moving the united states northeast forward. >> platforms will give way to an underground terminal. >> this is the place where we should make no small plans. >> amtrak projects new capacity could exceed passenger trips per day. >> this is the anchor for our electric high speed rail service on the south of that corridor. >> private developers will turn this eyesore into the place, a neighborhood built on a platform over the tracks. >> the project will transform an overpass, which composes today into a beautiful civic plaza with a grand entrance to amtrak's magnificent new train hull. >> it would link capitol hill with the up and coming noma neighborhood. >> our biggest concern right now is that there's not enough input from the community itself. >> transforming union station and this neighborhood will take more than twenty years and as

we said, $7 billion for the amtrak portion, a billion and a half for this neighborhood. and they say they will see community input as that process moves forward. in union station, armando trull, 9news now. >> the pentagon is setting up a new website to list the names of americans who have won the medal of honor in the last eleven years, so everyone knows who really got that. the decision comes on the heels of last month's supreme court decision that invalidated the stolen act. that law made it a crime to lie about receiving military decorations, but the justices said that was a violation of free speech. defense secretary says the website could eventually expand to include other military awards and honors. he spoke to a congressional panel about looming cuts in the defense department. >> i sure hope that the secret doesn't happen. >> i'm with you. >> it would be, as i've said time and time again, a disaster in terms of the defense

department as far as our budget is concerned and as far as our ability to respond to the threats that are out there. and it would have a huge impact. >> last week, george mason university released estimates that our region could lose 450,000 jobs over the next decade as a result of the cut. virginia would lose the most. followed by d.c. and maryland. in maryland, house of delegates speaker, michael bush, told lawmakers to get ready for a special session next month on whether to expand gambling in the state. governor martin o'malley has been pushing for this session to tackle the issues of allowing table games as well as a new casino site. o'malley wanted lawmakers to reach an informal consensus before calling that session. >> to alexandria, where the waterfront will be changing, but there's a fight underway about what can be built. three lawsuits over the plan had been filed and opponents are planning to speak out against a planned hotel.

peggy fox reports. >> just south of where those potomac river cruise parks, the city of alexandria is considering a proposal to build a five story, 121 room hotel right on the water. a group called friends of the alexandria waterfront is against it. >> it's too big, too high, too much bulk, and it does not conform in terms of its shape with the waterfront plan. >> the developer is car hospitality and the site is the old cummings warehouse. alexandria's waterfront plant allows for hotels, the zoning would have to be changed because current zoning does not allow for hotels. >> there's going to be a will the of traffic. i just think that it is going to be too much for this community to bare. we have brack we are dealing with up the street. just because it is in d.c., it's quaint and homey and it's

going to rob it of that. >> opponents say car is not planning adequate parking facilities. not all the neighbors are opposed to building a hotel here on the waterfront. some think it would be a nice addition to replace what they call an eyesore. >> i think it would add greatly to the beauty. i think this place is right for it. >> while realtor and neighbor likes the plan, he too, would like to see it scaled down. in alexandria, peggy fox, 9news now. >> we requested an interview with hospitality, but the calls were never returned. company reps are expected to be at the work session tonight, which is from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the council chamber at city hall. >> perfect day to stroll the waterfront. >> definitely, yeah, you can really feel the humidity has gone down and feels really nice for a summer july day here in d.c. now, we are looking at

some heat and the humidity to really ramp things up for tomorrow. in fact, we have a heat advisory for tomorrow, starting at noon until 8:00 p.m. for the d.c. metro area. this is basically starting at interstate 81 and points east. so, it's going to be a hot one tomorrow. our live look at our michael and son weather camera. sunshining, mostly sunny, temperature 87. dew points are in the 50s. that is really comfortable. i was able to finally open my window earlier today because it has been so humid recently. but not today. currently, temperatures are in the 80s. 86 in arlington. 83 in bethesda. reston, you're in the lower 80s and in bowie, you're at 87 degrees. all right, so we are going to expect some changes coming this way. heat and humidity returning. pleasant for tonight. you have to enjoy that. thursday, triple digit heat. heat advisory from noon until 8:00. friday, it will be hot once again, with a better chance for

storms. want to show you this risk for severe weather. the north of us into parts of pennsylvania and new york, they are looking at a moderate risk for organized storms, maybe some high winds. for us, we are under a slight risk, including the district and points north toward the mason dixon line. the main threat being damaging winds tomorrow. any storms that do pop up tomorrow do have the potential to become strong or severe. very small potential. our future cast showing us lots of sunshine today. it was a gorgeous day today. a lot of people really liking it. here's a look at your future cast where temperatures are really going to rise tomorrow and we have a chance for some popup storms tomorrow. better chances will be on friday as we see some scattered showers and storms. won't be as hot, but still, it's pretty unstable, the atmosphere on friday. saturday, we're looking at more showers and storms potentially and temperatures will be a little cooler. temperatures will be around
