time. we're expecting readings to get into the 90s quickly. 93 by noon with sunshine, mike. there's a stray thunderstorm possibility mainly north of town probably north of interstate 70 as we get into the afternoon and parts of western maryland this morning. some of those could be strong to severe as highs make a run toward 100. moderate air quality. storms this morning really exploding across parts of southwestern pennsylvania. look at all the lightning with this stuff. this is going to head into garrett county trying to stay along and north of interstate 68 but folks in cumberland, you've got to watch out for that. readings in the 60s and 70s. we don't have the 50s in garrett county like yesterday morning. we've got 72. 72 in winchester. 76 in annapolis. some spots, the cool one, frederick 63 but the moisture is coming back. the muggies are back here in d.c. while it's 75 now, readings this afternoon will make a run toward 100. a few lucky spots will stay in the 90s, the mid-90s like annapolis. let's go to monika samtani.

she has an update on timesaver traffic. a beer spill on 270. >> on a hot day like today, too. oh, the waste. we're going to go to our mdot camera first on the northbound side of i-270. just after 4:00 this morning, a beer truck in an accident. single vehicle accident by the way, but it's heavily damaged and i think the beer did spill on the road, by the way, and that's why it's taking so long to clean it up. this is northbound 270 north of route 109. you can see traffic is trying to squeeze by to the right northbound. it is causing delays. i'm show you that in a secretary. southbound side, -- in a s.e.c. southbound side, it's attracting attention as well. we'll have a look at route 121. the backups are not far back as 121 but i would get off here and take 355 as your alternate route. let's look at the map on the northbound side of 270. you're going about 5 miles an hour past route 109. in problems on 95 coming up

ashburn. it is 5:04 just about now. marlowe furniture employees will have to be cleaning up after a fire yesterday at the rockville pike store. fire crews had to shut down the road for a little while around 5:00 last night because there was so much smoke from the fire. everyone got out of the building safely. no problems there. the flames were on the second floor and on the roof. one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire. the montgomery county government says it spent more than $10 million on last month's derecho. the storm brought straight line winds but knocked out power to over a million in the area. now plans are to ask the federal government to cover some of the costs. some of the expenses include more than 2100 hours of overtime logged by police officers. fire and rescue service responded 2,000 times during one 48-hour period and the department of environmental protection processed 80,000 cubic yards of debris.

that would fill more than 2600 of those big dumpsters you see at construction sites. the victims of the movie theater shooting in aurora, colorado are facing an uphill battle when it comes to recovering from their wounds. some are also looking at millions of dollars in medical bills. but there is a bright side. you may remember more than 6 on people were injured when a gunman opened fire inside that theater during a showing of the "the dark knight rises" last friday. strangers and warner bros. have donated close to $2 million to help the victims and also three out of the five hospitals treating the victims say they will limit or completely wipe out their outstanding medical bills. the time right now is 5:05. i am watching your money. it's all about profits today. the big one is amazon.com reporting profits later today that could provide a glimpse into the mood of consumers. wall street expects a slowdown in sales of amazon's kindle fire. consumers appear to be waiting for the newest version to be released. we did see strong earnings from

boeing and caterpillar yesterday and that helped the blue chips snap a three-day losing streak. the dow up 59 points. the s&p 500 was flat on the day. get ready to pay more money when you go grocery shopping. this year's fierce drought has scorched crops this summer. the u.s. department of agriculture says its latest forecast for retail food prices beef and poultry are expected to rise as much as 4.5%. the usda report says the severe drought in the midwest is expected to affect prices for corn and soybeans as well as other field crops. that would in turn impact retail food prices. aspen county airport is the scariest airport to fly in and out of in the country says airfare watchdog.com. pilots have to cope with snowy conditions and a very fast desent. strict noise restrictions require pilots of john wayne airport to be extra quick.

that puts it in at number two. there's midway airport in chicago with extra short runways. sitka rocky gutierrez airport in alaska is surrounded by dangerous rocks. and number five, yeager airport in west virginia is located on top of a mountain. d.c.'s own reagan national airport comes in at number ten since pilots have to maneuver the strict no-fly zones. >> really? >> mm-hmm. >> last time it didn't seem so bad. >> they do a good job. we're -- you have the wind shears that come off sometimes but it's a pretty easy desent. 5:07. just an awful story. a mother is arrested after leaving her child in a hot car in this amazing heat lately. what police say she was doing at the time she left her baby there. plus, a giant unwelcome visitor was roaming through one neighborhood. there he is right there. how they got rid of this big guy.

humidity levels are coming back up in a big way. temperatures will soar today well into the 90s. some areas will get to 100 degrees. a heat advisory goes into effect at noon. so a lot different than yesterday. here are the numbers. this morning by 9:00 expect temperatures already to be 81. 93 by noon. winds go southwest 10 to 15, gusting over 20. the 5:00 p.m. temperature still of 98. north of town a chance of a storm strange to severe. right now over to monika with

timesaver traffic. if you're planning to head northbound on 270, they've been moving the camera around. if you are planning to head toward route 109 -- just lost this camera shot -- on the northbound side they've been dealing with an overturned beer truck. only the right side of the road has been getting by. north at this point after route 121 and near route 109. i'll keep you posted on that situation coming up in my next report. back you to, mike. here's what's making news now at 5:10 this morning. some of the stories making news. in san diego a 4-month-old girl is indeed alive and looks like she'll be okay after police say her mother left her in a hot car so she could go shopping. maintenance workers spotted the baby strapped in the child seat. he and a police officer forced a window down. investigators say it was 140 degrees inside that car. the mother was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment. a military judge has told the fort hood accused shooter

to shave his head or he will have it forcibly shaved. he was fined $1,000 during a pretrial hearing yesterday. hassan has repeatedly refused to shave his beard for more than a month because he's muslim and wants to keep with his specific teachings. however, that's in violation of military regulation. hassan has been in custody since 2009 for allegedly gunning down 13 people at an army base in texas. he could face the death penalty. well, if the summer heat wasn't enough to keep florida residents inside, this guy sure was. this ten-foot crocodile was caught on camera at a safe distance of course. he's moving slowly but they can be quick. animal control was called in and was able to catch the croc before anybody was hurt. the olympic torch is on the final leg of its tour and one of the carriers is making history. >> we'll have that story and your weather first right after

howard bernstein. >> a different sort of day to plan. weather wise, let's talk about today. because we do have a heat advisory. that's going to go into effect at noon. we've had plenty of these. it's the weather service's way of saying hey, folks, it's going to be really hot. so pay attention to what's going o. listen to your body. stay cool. things could get dangerous if you're not smart. temperatures make a run toward triple digits this afternoon. some areas 100, 101. i think about a hundred in washington at national. noontime temps already in the low 90s. even by 6:00 tonight still 97 with a brisk southwest wind 10, 15, ten miles an hour. as -- 20 miles an hour. as you look at the dopplers, you can see southwestern pennsylvania from pittsburgh east now and south of there getting hit with lots of lightning and thunder. there are no severe thunderstorms that i can see from this but a lot of strong thunderstorms here. this is moving in toward western maryland coming out of morgantown. it will be in garrett county in

another 30 or 45 minutes. a little cell already making it not far from where 219 comes into 68. so cumberland over to clear spring. our friends in chambersburg and breezewood, anybody headed that way, watch out for this line of storms which is marching eastward at about 40 miles an hour. around here we're pretty quiet. temps in the 60s and 70s. culpeper 66. cumberland 64. they're watching those storms carefully. gaithersburg, baltimore at 70. 76 at the pax river naval air station. good visibility this morning under clear skies. dew point 67 giving us a relative humidity of 76%. just to let you know, this number yesterday was down to 52 or so. it was really beautifully dry yesterday afternoon. and very, very comfortable. nationally, well, the ridge is breaking down across the middle of the country. it's shifted east a little bit. that's allowed these thunderstorms to get into kansas or missouri so they're

not going to be 105 today. they're getting a little bit of some desperately needed rainfall. we're seeing the showers and storms from wisconsin east to new york state and again that area in pennsylvania which should ride along the mason- dixon line, maybe sneaking down i-68, i-70 way as we go through the next few hours. we'll watch that move east. middle of the day doesn't look too bad. in fact this afternoon the main threat will be north of d.c. and pennsylvania. could be a stray storm tonight and then a chance for a couple of storms again tomorrow and saturday afternoon. so yellow alerts all three days due to the heat today, 100 degrees. 75 to 80 for lows tonight. much warmer, much mugger. a couple of storms also overnight. tomorrow 95 with scattered storms. saturday 92 with scattered storms. sunday looks dry right now. i'm going to keep my fingers crossed on that, 90 degrees. upper 80s monday and tuesday again with more chances for the afternoon thunderstorms. monika samtani, we know about 270. any other issues to report? no big other issues.

one construction spot 066. i'll get to that in a minute but what howard is referring to is this accident on the northbound side of i-270. it happened just after 4:00 this morning. an overturned beer truck northbound 270 just past route 109. you can see all that red is clear. that means the cleanup is almost completed. let's take a live look from our mdot camera north of 270. you can see the right side of the road is getting by. flares are still in place but traffic has improved in this area. overturned beer truck just after 4:00 this morning of course attracting attention on the southbound side. let's go over to virginia now. on the westbound side of i-66 leaving nutley street toward route 123, there is construction in place. it's going to be there till 6:00 in the morning. so watch out for some slow traffic there. we'll head over to our traffic camera on the inbound side where traffic is looking great through centreville all the way to the beltway. i'll be back with more coming up in my next report. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. see you in just a little bit. a second chance at life

8:00 p.m. the heat index values could be 105 to 109. there are the storms in pennsylvania. i want to zoom in and show you they're headed toward parts of i-68. boy, this is going to get into garrett county, going to get into allegheny county, maybe washington county the next few hours and certainly north of the boarder. you're up in chambersburg, you have to watch out for this the next few hours. locally i think we're in pretty good shape for most of the day. mid-70s in town. a few 60s here in northern virginia from leesburg down to manassas. martinsburg is 67 and mid-70s in southern maryland. look at these highs today. we're going to make a run unfortunately toward the triple digits. monika samtani, we've got a beer truck overturned 270. i just want to know if it's light beer. >> corporal ryan who is my new bex friend, he tells -- best friend, he tells me this beer truck overturned just after 4:00 this morning. it's going toe take a while to clear up the beer.

let's take a live look there. they're waiting for a heavy duty wrecker. in the meantime only the right shoulder continues to get by. right now very, very slowly northbound side of 270. remember, this is against the rush hour flow and yet you have this huge backup here because of the cleanup. once the wrecker gets there, they pay be able to open up some lanes now. but as we've been saying this morning, a very sticky situation there. southbound side the lanes remain open. let's go back over to our maps, this time just southern maryland. no problems to report here. route 4, route 5, 210 out of accokeek to oxon hill. another live look this time coming north on 95 in springfield. still looking good to 395. i'll be back with more on that 270 situation in a few minutes. back to you guys. >> see you in just a little bit. just an awful story this morning. a 4-year-old boy is dead after finding a gun and shooting himself in the head. >> this terrible accident happened yesterday in woodbridge. police say he climbed into an unlocked pickup truck, was somehow able to find this gun,

pulled the trigger. the child's mother and neighbors tried to help the little boy but it was too late. right now no word if anyone will be charged in this case. will d.c. mayor vincent gray survive his first term? if so will he run for reelection? people are asking and the mayor is not saying. he's just pressing ahead with day-to-day business instead. yesterday he unveiled a detailed plan for the remainder of his term. the mayor will meet with ward 5 democratic leaders this evening to talk about the controversy surrounding his term. he's been under fire because the mayor had a shadow campaign that raised $650,000 illegally for his campaign. redskins fans are going to get a chance to see rg3 up close and in action. this is the first full day of practice for the redskins and this is the day that's open to the fans. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at redskins park in ashburn with what you need to know. any fans out there yet, delia?

>> reporter: unless you're counting the employees here at the park, but no fans, no civilian fans i guess you can say. the parking lot opens here at noon and then the gates open at 1:00 and then the players will hit the field for their practice at 2:55 this afternoon. that practice is expected to last an hour and a half to two hours. you'll be outside for a long time so you can count on plenty of water for the players to be drinking and hydrating on the field so you should certainly make sure that you stay hydrated out here as well with the steamy temperatures that we're expecting this afternoon. fans know there's no bleacher seating here. so you should bring a lawn chair or prepare to sit on the grass. you can bring a cooler with of course nonalcoholic beverages. hopefully plenty of water and gatorade and food, too.

about 5:39 here on this thursday morning. generally clear skies here but you can start to feel the humidity creeping back as opposed to yesterday afternoon. it was delightful. much more humid and much hotter today. check out these temperatures we're expecting. by noon we think temperatures are going to be in the low 90s highs around 100. could be a stray storm, especially north of town this afternoon and anything that develops will be on the strong, maybe severe side. if you're going to pennsylvania

we'll take a live look at 270. it happened just after 4:00 this morning. you can see traffic is just squeezing by to the right shoulder. they were waiting on a heavy duty wrecker to clear that up and also clear up the mess caused by the accident. there were no injuries in this but significant delays northbound. southbound has remained open the entire time. just a gawker's block on the southbound side. let's go back over to the map to the other side of town in virginia. northbound 95, you're beginning to see some slow traffic leaving dale city to woodbridge. all the lanes are open. this is -- this has been ?eents free the -- incident free the entire week thankfully. no problems here heading for 395. once you're there we'll take a live look as well up north at edsall road. no issues there as well. most of us who have this ez pass device are used to the convenience of whizzing through tollbooths and passing long lines. but for a faster commute on the

express lane. if you use your ez pass exclusively for carpooling on the 495 express lanes and the future 95 express lanes, will you not be charged a monthly fee and you also won't be charged any tolls. >> i'm going to interrupt you. let me understand. so the ech z pass flex -- the ez pass flex is mainly because you can switch -- i have it in my hand right now. you can switch it to hov on so if you have three people in your car on your express lanes on the beltway, that 14-mile stretch from the toll road to springfield, it will be free. >> absolutely. there's a switch. that's what makes it different. you can switch from non-hov to hov. >> you mentioned about the monthly fee. there's been a lot of criticism calling these lexus lanes and even the trucking industry is quite upset about the possibility of having to pay tolls on 95 in the future as well. what's your comment on that?
