till 8:00. been watching some strong storms. not severe but strong storms with a ton of lightning in southwestern pennsylvania, now getting in toward garrett county spreading east. cumberland maybe the next 30 minutes. areas north of the border have a better chance than maryland or west virginia. cumberland to berkley springs, martinsburg 67 right now. it's 75 in annapolis. 76 in cambridge. fredricksburg is 71 this morning with 72 if la plata. highs toward 100 degrees this afternoon. it is 6:00 a.m. monika samtani issues on 270. new things popping up? >> well, you know, here is what is looks like on 270 from our sky 9. i've been telling but this accident northbound side is the left side of your screen. it was an overturned beer truck, happened just after 4:00 this morning, northbound 270 after route 109. i can see the sky 9 is trying to zoom in a bit because right in the center of your screen, you can see all of the beer that spilled out of the truck on a hot day like today, huh,

we are la meanting. we'll take you over -- lamenting. we'll take you over to our mdot camera and you can see traffic is squeezing by on the shoulder. it is causing delays against the rush hour flow but still heavy and slow trying to get past this accident. southbound has remained open the entire time but slow traffic there as well as you head down to route 80. this time we'll take a look here 270 northbound. you can see it's slow and southbound as well past the accident southbound lanes remain open. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in my next report in a few minutes. back to you guys. >> 6:11. see you then. fairfax county police want to know what started an argument between two roommates because it ended with both men dead in an apparent murder- suicide. >> all of this began last night in oakton, virginia. the two men lived on trevor house drive just off germantown road. police say 43-year-old man was murdered by his roommate. that man is 27-year-old

alexander rios. he then took his own life. the shootings remain under investigation. the man convicted of killing uva lacrosse player yeardley love is claiming misconduct. they say the commonwealth attorney never disclosed the love family plan to file a civil lawsuit against huguely. a judge will consider the request at the end of the month. when it comes to maryland lawmakers talking about expanding gambling in the state, it's been a back and forth sort of will they or won't they. speakers of the house michael bush believes they will hold a special session next month. he told reporters wednesday he thinks governor martin o'malley will call that session. lawmakers will debate whether to allow table games in maryland and whether to approve a new casino in prince george's county. if they say yes, then the issue will go before the voters coming up in november.

new at 6:00 this morning, patients at a maryland hospital are now being checked for hepatitis c and that is part of a nationwide alert. the hospital involved is in southern maryland and hospital center in clinton, maryland. more than a hundred people that were there in 2008 and 2009 may have been exposed to the disease by a former contract employee. the man was arrested in new hampshire. police say he exposed people there to hepatitis c by stealing needles, using them on himself and then using them on patients. >> he knew he had heptatitis c as of at least june 2010. he continued to divert drugs and permit paintedder is ring -- tainted syringes to be used on patients under his care. >> 6,000 people at a new hampshire hospital are being tested and hospitals in five other states where he also worked are being investigated now. it may only be july 26 but

football season begins today. the redskins hold their first practice. >> of course all eyes are on rg3. delia goncalves is following the doings at reds skins training camp. she's live at redskins park in ashburn, virginia this morning. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. i like the vigor of that intro, jessica and mike. it's a pretty exciting day here at the park. folks are gearing up. a lot of them -- members of the media are already here and employees are here. you can already feel the buzz. i've got to say even with the new found celebrity, rg3, he's a pretty humble guy. when he was responding to a reporter's questions during a news conference yesterday, he said, you know, in fact, he's just a mask. the guys on the team are the body, heart and soul of the

sundays. parking lots open at noon each day and the gates open at 1:00. the big exception is august 4 which is fan appreciation day. that kicks off at noon and the parking lots open on that day at 8:00 a.m. before you go, though, you have to print out a free invite. you can find that at redskins.com. the time is 6:06. i am watching your money. you shouldn't worry too much about having to pay a commuter tax. if you work in the district but you live outside of the city. that's according to maryland congressman steny hoyer. the house minority whip says a commuter tax is not necessary. this comes after last week republican congressman daryl issa said they should debate a commuter tax after the election. facebook stock has been on a roller coaster ride since its debut last spring. today we'll see how much investors like it. the company will release its first earnings report as a

public company. analysts say facebook is under pressure to show it can deliver profits for shareholders. the stock began trading at $38 a share back in may. it closed yesterday at 29.34. you cannot avoid car insurance commercials on television. most of the time the ads go for the funny bone. >> chink punk family re-- chipmunk family reunion. someone stole the nuts. >> the problem is funny ads don't appear to work when it comes to insurance. our partners at "u.s.a. today" report humorous ad campaigns are not getting people to switch companies. so expect to see some new, more serious ads for insurance in the weeks to come. >> are you in good hands? >> i don't want to lose the geico gekko. i love that little guy. and the pig? i love the pig. >> please, keep the funny ones. cool schools is back this thursday. this little boy had trouble

once again. we focus on great summer programs we find. this one proved to be a life change fora little boy named sam. he started life with a lot of things stacked against him. abuse, illness and no permanent home. an amazing woman named kathy jackson changed his lot in life. so did the sport of golf. here's how. >> i'm always prepared, right? >> reporter: he was one of seven siblings who needed a home. it turns out he needed a lot more than that. >> when i got sam, one of the things i noticed when i would take him to a playground is he dragged his left foot. >> reporter: even simple tasks were struggles for 6-year-old sam. >> fix your cap. >> reporter: when kathy jackson adopted him nearly four years ago. >> i knew that his left hand was much weaker. he couldn't hold silverware and he had a hard time even getting dressed. >> reporter: he's on the autism spectrum, has mild cerebral palsy and emotional scars. kathy was looking for anything to help him connect with her

and the rest of society. >> we tried t ball. it was a disaster. we tried soccer. it was a disaster. too much noise, not enough structure. >> reporter: then one fate fall day she took sam and two of his brothers she also adopted to a mini golf course and something about the sport just clicked with sam. >> golf has given me a way to reach him because through golf, i found out that unless his body's moving, his brain's not moving. it's even gone for stuff at home. if i need him to do what his chore for the day is, if i start walking with him and then ask him to do it, he'll do it. but if i ask him while he's still, he won't do it. >> reporter: so kathy thought golf lessons would make a big difference. >> put the club right up against the golf ball. >> reporter: she was right. golf has helped improve sam's balance. it's building the strength in that weak left hand, and?

[indiscernible] >> reporter: the communication problems that are telltale signs of autism are starting to disappear as well. >> once we sat down and shook hands, you know, we went over the whole introduce yourself and then he just started to slowly -- you know, we started to build a rapport. >> reporter: that's the one, sam. >> he interacts with more people. he's interacting with kids but it's not only here. it's in other environments, too. >> reporter: the course also teaches nine core values like integrity and sportsmanship and the change in sam's emotional state has been nothing short of amazing. >> four years ago i had this 4- year-old bundle of anger. he is just -- he has just evolved into this really cute, social, wonderful little boy. >> reporter: thanks to golf and

we'll have partly to mostly sunny skies, some high clouds, but there's also a threat, especially north of town for the isolated storm this afternoon. anything that pops could be strong to severe. this morning a cluster of storms in southwestern pennsylvania is now sneaking in toward areas in western maryland, out toward morgantown and west virginia. lots of lightning with this as this moves off towards the east at 40 miles an hour. it is sinking a little farther south so the eastern western panhandle, you'll have to watch this. getting toward frostburg, cumberland knocking on your doorstep but think about romney, paw paw, keyser will be dealing with these storms the next couple of hours. perhaps heading toward hagerstown for the 9:00 hour or earlier. gaithersburg is 72. mid-70s for the pax river naval air station and easton as well. here in d.c. this morning. the sun rose a few minutes ago. just a glint of the sun on the capitol dome on our michael & son weather camera.

75. a few high clouds out there. humidity 76%. so a lot mugger than it was yesterday when humidity values were in the 30% range. there are the storms here in pennsylvania. the big stuff well north of us and will stay north of us. we'll watch that cluster this morning. we have to watch for the threat of severe weather, especially north of the mason-dixon line where there's a moderate risk today. any storms that pop and we're not expecting that many, just an isolated one or two, could be on the strong side anywhere in the washington metro and baltimore metro for today. damaging wind gusts, hail, even an isolated tornado not out of the question. here's the future cast. we'll take that cluster of storms east toward noon. try to make it fall apart toward philadelphia. a few leftover clouds from that. more showers and storms could populater today. tomorrow afternoon and saturday afternoon a few more storms. so a hundred degrees this afternoon. yellow alerts for the heat advisory and the stray storm. yellow alert for the storms saturday. 95 friday.

we'll be 80 for the low in town tonight. 70s north and west. saturday 92 with storms. by sunday only around 90. the big story of the morning has definitely been this overturned beer truck. take a look at your screen. our live look from sky 9. this is the northbound side after route 109. luckily there were no injuries but the truck severely injured, completely demolished. northbound 270 north of route 109 you can see only the right shoulder getting by. do expect delays here. in fact, we'll take a look from our mdot camera as well. these people heading northbound definitely are not used to this delay trying to get up toward the frederick area. normally it's a clear ride so keep that in mind for your travel plans. let's go over to the maps. if you're planning to head over to the other side of town or let me show you what it looks like on the map at 270. again you'll find the slow traffic heading northbound and southbound past the accident

heading toward keyser, cumberland, paw paw. today we are looking at a mix of sun and clouds. a hot day, around 100 degrees for the high with a heat advisory from noon to 8:00 p.m. for mishandling reports of jerry sandusky's child abuse, penn state was hit with a massive fine and many restrictions on its football team. and the ncaa called it unprecedented. >> but we're learning it could have been worse for the school. penn state president rodney erickson tells espn the football program would have been shut down for four years if it didn't agree to the ncaa's plan. that is the so-called death penalty. the $60 million fine would have been higher as well. penn state and ncaa instead worked out an agreement which allows football to continue. the nationals in milwaukee. they begin a four-game series with the brewers tonight. the nats are riding a five-game winning streak beating the mets yesterday 5-2. strasburg striking out 11. the nats are now 17 games above

>> president obama back here in washington after a visit to new orleans. he held a fund-raiser at the house of blues. the president hailed the senate vote which could extend the tax cuts on people making less than $200,000 a year. the commission on presidential debates is planning three of them for this fall. october 3 at the university of denver, october 16 at hofstra university in new york and october 22 at lynn university in boca raton, florida. each debate will be 90 minutes. the two campaigns still have to agree to the plan. police have not said whether there will are charges in the death of a 4-year-old boy. he apparently found an unsecured gun in a family member's truck and then shot himself. the boy was found yesterday along empire street and darby dale avenue in woodbridge, virginia. he was taken to the hospital but died a short time later. the child's name has not been released. police in harford county, maryland want to find the man who kidnapped the mother of cal

ripken. she is safe rpg. he he -- she is safe this morning. she was forced into the back seat of her own car. he tied her up and drove her around central maryland for nearly 24 hours. the kidnapper eventually abandoned the car and ripken near her home in aberdeen. investigators do not know the motive or even if the man new ripken's identity. a lot of people around town are focusing on the first place nationals. today sports fans will be thinking football, too. >> that is because redskins officially kick off their training camp today. delia goncalves live at redskins park in ash burn. the focus of course rooky sensation rg3. >> reporter: good morning. can't get enough of rg3. when the fans come in at 1:00 when the park opens to fans, you can expect huge crowds. i'm sure lots of folks very anxious to get to see rg3 in action up close and personal. so they will be lining that

welcome back. it's 6:43. 75 degrees. i'm going to show you what it looks like at the accident scene northbound on i-270. i've been telling you about this since before -- right at the start of the rush hour after 4:00 this morning where there was an overturned beer truck northbound 270 north of route 109. we'll take a live look from our

mdot camera, northbound side. the cleanup remains very slow squeezing by to the right here with the arrow board set up. a closer look at that shows us that it's going to take a while to clean this up. on the southbound side the lanes remain open but everyone wants to take a look at what's going on so you have the solid backup from route 80 heading southbound on 270 as well. receipts take a look at the beltway. there was an accident on the inner loop near colesville road and through that construction zone on the beltway. so you've got a lot of slow traffic leaving that toward university boulevard and through the silver spring area eastbound on 495. now over to the other side in college park. the beltway here looks fine but there is an accident on the harry s. truman drive north of central avenue. apparently it was involving a motorcycle. one person is dead after that accident. investigation continues there. harry s. truman drive north of central avenue. i'll keep you posted on area roads once again at 6:58. >> thank you, monika. howard is leer to take a look at the day ahead. maybe some records being grown

potentially -- broken potentially. >> dulles has the best chance of that. if we hit 100, it will be the eighth time we've done it this year. not a number to be proud of by any stretch. let's talk about the records to beat. told you i was going to show you this. we've got temperatures today which will get close. i think the 98 at dulles is in jeopardy set in the wonderful year of 1966. the one in d.c. is probably safe and the one in baltimore also is going to be a little bit in jeopardy. no way are we going to 107 in martinsburg. that was a hot day back in 1934. it's going to be a hot day in 201012 with temperatures in the low 90s. around 100 around 4:00 or so. winds out of the southwest 10, 15, 20 miles an hour so getting a little bit breezy. there is a threat after thunderstorm or two mainly north of town later today. this morning, though, we're watching some big storms. lots of lightning. nothing severe but strong storms with lots of lightning and maybe a little hail moving across parts of western

maryland and south central pennsylvania. they've cleared pitburg. approaching harrisburg now and chambersburg, carlisle. watching out for these storms at this hour. this is live doppler 9000 hd. finally grove to paw paw, this is the leading edge of the storm. 5:22 right here. it will be on top of 522 in 5 or 10 minutes. cumberland still dealing with the rage. this goes into garrett county with lots and lots of lightning heading toward i-81 in another 45, 60 minutes. we will have to watch out in those areas. we have 70 in bethesda this morning. 69 for columbia. 68 over toward bowie this morning. andrews is 71. still 68 in reston and haymarket, one of our cool spots manassas # 6 but lovettsville got you beat at 65. a sunny start on our michael & son weather camera this morning with high humidity 76% and a south, southwesterly wind at 8 miles an hour. satellite and radar big storms here. also there's one little cluster storms that will straddle the

mason-dixon line. this may get down to frederick. it will stay a little more toward the mason-dixon line inching itself ever so far south. looks like we'll have a better chance for some afternoon storms tomorrow and again on saturday. so the forecast today 100 degrees. yellow alert with a heat advisory. only about 80 for the low tonight with we're talking mid- 70s in the burbs in the cool spots. 95 tomorrow. yellow alerts for the storms friday and saturday with 92 on saturday. sunday storm chances go down. i'm going to keep it off the board but it's about 10s are 20%, high -- 10%, 20%, high around 90. monday and tuesday highs generally in the 80s. dozens of people in district heights, maryland are trying to rebuild their lives after a fire but it could have been a lot worse. >> the fire tore through the garden apartments on rochelle avenue tuesday night. as bruce leshan tells us, no one was hurt all because of some local heroes. >> reporter: i'm bruce less hahn in district heights from

blocks away a police lieutenant sees a column of smoke rising. he and a corporal rush into this burning building to rescue a half dozen people who have no idea their lives are in danger. >> i think it's human instinct. >> reporter: lieutenant scott finn and corporal rikki adey say they'll never forget what they found. >> this is the area behind us where the dogs were out on the balcony. >> reporter: flames roaring across the back of the building from the first floor up through the roof. >> when i got here, i could hear screams of people. thnl i -- then i heard these bloodcurdling screams and yelps. i wasn't sure what it was. >> the dog was just screaming and hollering. >> reporter: then the two officers rushed around to the other side of the burning building to get more people out. investigators know that the fire started here on the outside on the first floor but there's still not -- they're still not sure what sparked it. dozens of people are homeless.

one more thing. yesterday we bought you baby cheetahs. this morning we're bringing you baby gazelles or at least one in this case. >> how cute. this little boy or girl -- i'm not sure who -- was born to momma. these are very rare. are they're critically endangered. there's only 500 left in the wild. they lift in the desert and subcyst on very little water. the reason why they're endangered because humans are knocking down their habitat. they don't have the vegetation they need to eat. this is a rare birth. >> some people were able to watch it on exhibit yesterday. they'll put the momma and baby away for a couple of weeks so they can bond and then they'll be put back on exhibit again. >> so cute. >> they've been busy at the national zoo. good job, everybody.
