into effect at noon. it lasts for another eight hours. we're worried about the heat- humidity combination pushing the heat index to 105, maybe locally higher than that, especially south of town. the cloud cover this morning, that gave us a little bit of a break. had showers and storms in western and northern maryland. those clouds around this morning have limited the rise to slow it down at least in northern sections. but down south, still very, very hot already. low 90s fredricksburg, tappahannock. we're trying to catch up. 88 at national. gaithersburg and hagerstown only in the low 80s at this hour. they may struggle to get into the 90s in the far northern sections. however, we still have a heat veriry. that's -- heat advisory. that's one problem. there are pretty strong thunderstorms expected off to the north, ohio, pennsylvania, maybe western and northern maryland if they can slip down south of the mason-dixon line. you notice the orange area to the north. that's the moderate risk area for severe weather. could be big time problems with damaging wind gusts, hail, maybe isolated tornadoes from

southern ohio, parts of connecticut and the new york region. they have a better chance north into pennsylvania than we do here. but just want to tell you folks up north, keep an eye on the sky late this afternoon and this evening. as far as our forecast, 93 if not 95 by 3:00. mid, maybe upper 90s for those highs. i pulled them back just a little bit. i think it will be tougher to get to that 100-degree mark which is fine by me. by 9:00 we're still in the low 90s. i'll come back in a few minutes and talk about the thunderstorm chances for tomorrow and the weekend. right now, jc, back to you. >> thank you, howard. well, it is sure to be hot in ashburn, virginia, because the redskins are kicking off training camp today. training camp is open to the public through august 14. there is no, camp, however, on sundays. and let me tell you that all eyes in training camp are going to be on our rookie sensation robert griffin iii. the team gave up three first

"the washington post" is saying that the governor is pushing for a plan to expand gambling in the state. it would reportedly include a new casino at the washington harbor in oxon hill and the expansion of table games at the existing slot parlors in the state. aides to the governor say the special session will likely be held next month and it will last for ciewsm days. -- for a couple of days. expanded gambling legislation would require voter approval in november. a motorcycle rider was killed in largo, maryland this morning. he lost control around 6:00 a.m.

on camps way near prince george's county community college. there is no word yet on what caused this accident and we do not have the identity of the rider. a truck carrying beer overturned and lots its load in frederick county this morning. it happened in the northbound lanes of i-270 just past hyattstown. police say the tractor-trailer was destroyed and it took several hours in order for crews to clean up the beer. the female driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital for a checkup and she was cited for failing to secure the truck's load. the man convicted of killing uva lacrosse player yeardley love is now asking for a new trial. he is claiming that the prosecutor acted wrong. "the baltimore sun" reports that george huguely's lawyers have requested a hearing to determine if evidence was withheld, and in their court

finding they claim the commonwealth's attorney never disclosed the love family plan to file a civil lawsuit against huguely. a judge will consider their request at the end of the month. >> es efforts are under way to check patients for hepatitis c at a maryland hospital. david kiakowsky once worked at the southern maryland hospital center in clinton, maryland. he's now behind bars for allegedly infecting several patients in new hampshire. police say that he exposed people to the virus by stealing needles and using them on himself and then using the needles on patients. >> he knew he had hepatitis c as of at least june of 2010. he continued to divert drugs and permit taintedder is rings to be used on patients under his care. >> he worked at the southern maryland hospital between 2008 and 2009. hospitals in five other states

where he was employed are also investigated. fairfax county police would like to know what started an argument between two roommates. it ended with both men dead in an apparent murder-suicide. all of this happened last night in oakton, virginia. the two men lived on trevor house drive just off germantown road. police say that 43-year-old ihab catoub was murdered by his roommate. that man has been identified at 27-year-old alexander rios. rios then took his own life. the shooting remains under investigation. a 4-year-old boy is dead after an accidental shooting that occurred in woodbridge. police say that the youngster climbed into an unlocked pickup car, found a gun and was able to pull the trigger. it is still unclear whether anyone will face charges in connection with the shooting

that occurred yesterday. police in harford county, maryland have resumed their search for the man who kidnapped carl ripken's -- cal ripken's mother, excuse me. a man forced 74-year-old violet ripken into the back seat of her car on tuesday. he tied her up and he drove her around central maryland for nearly 24 hours. the kidnapper eventually abandoned the car and ripken near her home in aberdeen. investigators say they do not know the motive or even if the man knew ripken's identity. a person of interest in the murder of a winchester, virginia newspaper reporter is behind bars. prince william county police arrested john sheldon kearns on a probation violation last week. police previously searched his home in connection with the murder of sarah greenhalgh. traffic is moving again on rockville park following a fire in a furniture store. flames broke out in the ceiling

of the marlo furniture store last night. the pike was closed for several hours. everyone was able to get out of the building safely. dozens of people are struggling to get their lives back together following a fire that occurred in district heights. but it could have been a lot worse. the flames tore through the garden apartment on rochelle avenue tuesday night. bruce leshan tells us no one was injured thanks to some local heroes. >> reporter: i'm bruce leshan in district heights from blocks away a police lieutenant sees a column of smoke rising. he and a corporal rush into this burning building to rescue a half dozen people who have no idea they're lives are in danger. >> i think it's human instinct. >> reporter: lieutenant scott finn and ricki adey say they'll never forget what they found. >> this is where the dogs were

out on the balcony. >> reporter: flames roaring across the back of the building from the first floor up through the roof. >> when i got here, i could hear screams of people. then i heard these bloodcurdling screams and yipes and yell:s and -- yelps and didn't know what it was. >> reporter: then the two officers rushed around to the other side of the burning building to get more people out. investigators know that the fire started here on the outside on the first floor, but there's still -- but they're still not sure what sparked it. dozens of people are homeless just trying to salvage what they can. in district heights, bruce leshan, 9news now. a preliminary investigation shows that the fire began in a unit that had been empty for about a week. damage from the fire is estimated at half a million dollars. coming up on 9news now at noon... >> the olympics have become a political platform for u.s. politics. i'll have all the details

president owe obama is back in washington following a visit to new orleans. the president is scheduled to have lunch with the vice president within the hour. mitt romney is also on a fund raising mission. the presumptive republican presidential candidate is also meeting with british leaders as he looks to boost his foreign

policy credentials. we have more information from london. >> reporter: president hopeful mitt romney arrived in the brit fish capital looking to build credibility. he met with britain's prime minister and other leaders he hopes to work with if he wins the race in november. romney said he understands the special bond between the u.s. and its biggest ally. >> our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and our desire to see a stronger and growing economy. >> reporter: the republican white house hopeful also sat down with former prime minister tony blair who is now a special envoy to the middle east. but it wasn't all business. romney told blare he's looking forward to seeing his wife compete in the olympic sport of dressage. romney and his wife brought three of their sons to london to enjoy the opening ceremonies on trip. president obama won't make the trip but the first lady and their daughters will. >> it's amazing. i'm excited for her to do that. >> it's a very pivotal year i

welcome back. howard bernstein with you. really sticky outside. yesterday was gorgeous. it's turned on a dime. it's kind of gross out there with the humidity levels that are up. temperatures will be heading toward the upper 90s. maybe, maybe 100 degrees. it's going to be a tough thing to get since we lost several hours of the direct sunshine this morning. as we get into the afternoon, we'll see readings into the upper 90s still at 5:00. an isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out. winds kicking up out of the southwest at 10, 15, 20 miles an hour. it will get a bit breezy but it is awfully sticky. even at 9:00 still in the low 90s. tonight we'll be lucky to get less than 80 in d.c. a muggy mid-70s in the cool spots.

look at this this morning. all the showers and storms gave us some cloudiness. that has kempt the lid on some of the temperatures, especially north of d.c. at this hour. it's only 82 in hagerstown. 84 frederick. but down south we've had a lot more sunshine so it's 93 already in fredericksburg. it's 91 in culpeper. it's 91 in orange. even in cumberland where they had some storms, they've recovered into the 90-degree range now. very hot air has moved in. the heat index values when you factor in the humidity, well it's now feeling more like 102 in fredericksburg. feels like 95 in martinsburg and 100 in leesburg. by the bay heat index values upper 80s, low 90s. we're on tap for a very sticky day. the heat advisory noon till 8:00. you can see on our michael & son weather camera, just a hazy sunshine that's out there. the 88 feeling like 98 with a dew point up to 75. this number was down in the low 50s yesterday afternoon. the relative humidity 65%. with the south wind that's just bringing all that humidity back which we were able to get rid

of for at least one day this week. nationally big changes. remember we had the ridge we kept talking about for days and days and days over kansas and missouri where temperatures were getting to 105? that thing has broken down. the front is coming through. you'll notice the clouds, the showers, the thunderstorms. it's a little quiet now. throw in some daytime heating and south and east of where the showers are now, this stuff is going to explode later this afternoon across ohio and pennsylvania and southern new york and northern new jersey. there could be some very severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts. for us, we' just a little -- we're just a little too far south to get into the worst of the weather. we may see a couple of storms pop here. anything that pops given the heat and humidity could be strong to severe as well. i think it's going to be fairly isolated. here's the future cast. you see a couple of showers and storms pop there this afternoon. stopping the clock at 6:00 p.m. that's what i'm talking about,s isolated stuff as we go through the evening hours through the new york metro. tonight, tomorrow morning 5:15, a couple of showers possible

west virginia. i think we may see something stray overnight. otherwise a quiet start tomorrow. then boom, middle of the day we start to heat things up. we're going to bubble up some source and storms. they'll be with us for the afternoon hours, the evening hours. then things will settle down. we'll do about the same on saturday as well. sunday looks like the drier day of the weekend. so today upper 90s. we may flirt with 100 in a few spots. heat advisory in effect. an isolated strong thunderstorm. tonight 75 to 80. tomorrow yellow alerts for thunderstorms and saturday as well. mid-90s on friday. low 90s saturday. sunday around 90 degrees. i think if there's a thunderstorm, it's really going to be very isolated. then next week we've got temperatures running into the upper 80s with a chance still for some of those thunderstorms monday, tuesday and i think more likely on wednesday. it is thursday at noon. that means it's pet line 9 time. this is mariellen white house of the bonnie lou adoption agency. you're out of haymarket, virginia. >> haymarket.

the accusations against the founder of one of the most prestigious swim clubs in america have left local swimmers and their parents in shock. rick is the founder of the curl

burke swim club. he's taken a leave of absence after being accused of having sexual relations with a swimmer when she was 13 years old. here to talk about this incredible situation is sports psychiatrist tony baum. she's a woman now. she's married. but she admitted she had sexual relations with the founder, rick curl. he was 33 years old. she was 13 years old when this relationship started. and to get to the point, there was a payoff. he paid her family when her mother and father found out about this relationship, a large sum of money, $150,000 over a 11-year period. but now she is speaking out about this abuse. what in the world do parents do

hearing this information? >> well, probably some of them panic or wonder, is my child next. these are important things to be aware of and in the sporting world where people have looked at how often does this happen and why does it happen in sports, i mean, you can certainly theorize why it might happen more often in sports. when you look at statistics, they're all over the map because people of course are so secretive about this, both perpetrators and victims, so it often doesn't come out at all. but there's looft opportunity between a coach and -- lot of opportunity between a coach and athlete. not only is there that inherent power differential which is probably more prevalent in elite athletes because the stakes are higher, they're that much more dependent on their coaches, the desire to please their coaches. the opportunities are rampant because they spend many hours agency, they go away on travel together. i think in this case how it actually began, where the time and opportunity was, was that she would have to get to
