a storm alert. severe weather dancing around our area tonight. >> and we're not totally out of the woods just yet. also, the restaurant report uncovers a pizza joint in some hot water. roaches. plus, the handbag hustlers after a series of local purse snatchings we now have video of some of the suspects. new video right now just into our newsroom. take a look at this.

lightning, torrential rain and reduced speed op i-95. this comes to us from harford county, maryland. that's about 50 miles from town. and this was the scene a bit closer to home in frederick county. more heavy rain and dangerous driving. >> now, much of this evening's severe weather has moved out of our area but we're still tracking some storms. anny hong joins us from the weather center. >> you mentioned harford county. in fact, we do have a couple of flash flood warnings in effect right now. most of these severe thunderstorm watches have been dropped with the exception of anne arundel and prince george's county. that's still until 1:00 tonight. you see those counties highlighted in yellow. live doppler 9000 hd, baltimore and carroll county, a flash flood warning until 2:00 a.m. here around d.c. we still have a couple thunderstorms, right around woodbridge, just basically south and east of manassas we see a couple of these storms moving basically off to the east. and so we could still see a couple of showers and storms headed out toward clinton.

here's a look at the radar and lightning. we saw a lot of lightning with these storms. what we saw is a cold front coming through, clashing with the unstable atmosphere. so we did see some pretty good storms. had quite a few warnings earlier tonight in frederick, prince william as well. here's a look closer in, maybe even around rockville, laurel, fairfax and manassas. this is just round one of severe weather. tomorrow the cold front will actually come farther south, and that could also trigger more severe storms tomorrow afternoon and evening. we'll talk more about that a little bit later. firsti anita and derek, back to you. they're fast, sneaky, and on the run from cops. some purse snatching thieves targeting women at gas stations. ken molestina is here to explain. >> reporter: anita, in all these cases it's been unsuspecting women who have fallen victim to the thieves but now police are hoping the latest case will get them one step closer to nabbing these

punks because it was all caught on camera. this surveillance video was station from a gas station in prince george's county wednesday. pay close attention to the black mercedes suv sir cling the pumps looking for a victim. they zero in on a woman who just finished pumping gas. the passenger gets out, sneaks up and takes the woman's purse from inside her car. >> i heard about it today. a good idea to take precautions. >> reporter: word is out in prince george's county that at least two different sets of handbag hustlers are creeping on their streets. police say on wednesday they recorded four different hits. some, not all, they say, are the work of the same crooks. this woman, who didn't want to be identified, said she fell victim to a similar crime last year. >> by the time i got out of the car, turned around to go to the pump i saw someone jumping in the passenger seat of the car. it was a guy bent over, scooping my stuff out. >> reporter: among the similarities, police say these cars have their windows open.

other similarities include distracted female victims, and their purses are always in plain sight. police say often those who fall prey aren't aware of their surroundings, like this woman who didn't notice we were peeking inside her suv. >> you didn't see us walking around your car? >> no, i'm not going to lie. i didn't see y'all. >> police say the best way to keep from becoming a victim is the obvious. never leave valuables in plain sight, always make sure your windows are up, and be aware of your surroundings. police george, county police are asking you give them a call if you have any information. for the second time in two days a family lost a child due to a gun accident. according to the sheriff's office, a 13-year-old boy may have shot an 11-year-old girl with some sort of hunting weapon. that girl was taken to the hospital, and delmarva now reports that that girl has died as a result of those injuries. and police in woodbridge,

virginia have released the name of that little boy who died after accidentally shooting himself. kyrell mcneil. yesterday he climbed into a pickup truck belonging to his stepdad who works as a security guard. in that truck he found a loaded gun and it went off. police in aberdeen, maryland have released photos of a man they believe kidnapped the mother of baseball's hall of fame great cal ripken junior in a bizarre incident this week. tonight scott broom investigates the miss stie fying details. and he's spoken one on one with the man who found mrs. ripken still tied up in her car. >> reporter: erik snyder is the neighbor who discovered mrs. ripken, and he found her right under the noses of the police who were looking for her. >> how far away were the police when you found her? >> i would say within 100 yards. >> 100 yards. >> yes, but they were behind a hill and out of line of sight. >> reporter: manning a road block at an intersection, just five addresses down from the

ripken family home, where vy ripken, the mother of baseball iron man cal ripken junior had been abducted by a gunman from her garage nearly 24 hours before. in fact, snyder said he made a u-turn when he saw the road block, then he saw something he had not seen moments before. >> i saw someone waving a white sweater out of a car window. i stopped and asked the woman inside if she needed help. she said that her house was really close to her but somebody had left her in the car and that her feet were bound. remembering the roadblock, i asked her if it was all right if i got the police. >> reporter: which he did. police found mrs. ripken, age 74, legs still restrained, struggling to get out of her 1998 lincoln, a car like this one, which had been stolen during the abduction and used by the kidnap tore drive around the region with mrs. ripken blindfolded and restrained in the backseat. snyder said the passenger side door was hanging open, as if someone had just got out and walked away moments before. that someone may be this man,

seen in surveillance photos taken at a big box store somewhere in central maryland, police won't say where, during the abduction. the photos were released thursday. a suspect who may have abandoned mrs. ripken, a widow who lives alone by choice, right under the noses of the officers looking for her. >> she looked distraught, as anybody who had been kidnapped for nearly 24 hours would look, but she still had her witts about her. >> reporter: scott broom, 9news now. >> police say there was no ransom demanded during this bizarre kidnapping. they are offering a $2,000 reward for tips identifying the suspect you saw in that picture. family and friends today buried 23-year-old michaela medic. she was one of the 12 people killed in last week's colorado theater shootings. we should know tomorrow whether maryland lawmakers will convene soon to consider more casino gambling in the state. the governor plans to make an

announcement friday. he's been pushing for a special legislative session on allowing table games such as blackjack as well as a new casino site in prince george's county. new developments in the child sex abuse case of former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky. a key witness has apparently come forward with his story. we have more on what he's saying is and what that could mean for sandusky and the school. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's conviction on dozens of child sex abuse charges was based on the testimony of eight young men. each testified how the former penn state assistant coach offered friendship and football tickets in exchange for physical contact and in some cases sex. missing from the witness stand was victim number two, the young boy who fellow coach michael mcquery said he saw being raped in 2001. he was never named. but now attorneys representing a man who says he was that boy say they will sue the school.

in a statement, they say, "our client suffered extensive sexual abuse over many years, both before and after the 2001 incident." as proof, the firm released portions of two voice messages they say sandusky left for their client just last september, less than two months before his arrest. >> hey, probably i'll just go forward. i would be very firm and express my feelings upfront, but there's nothing really to hide. >> the attorneys say sandusky kept trying to control their client right up until his arrest, offering football tickets as other witnesses testified and telling the young man that he loved him. >> i was just calling to see if you had any interest in going to pain state game this saturday. i'll talk to you later. thanks. lovia. >> penn state has not commented on the potential lawsuit. sandusky faces life in prison. cbs news. >> now, the attorneys say they will also sue others in

front of hundreds of excited fans. of course, the spotlight on robert griffin iii. fans clamoring to see him up close. it's the first day we got a chance to see him practice with the entire team. now, he wasn't as sharp as we saw him during mini camp. he did throw a few ducks at receivers, but after every play way go over to offensive coordinator kyle shanahan, get a little bit of coaching before moving on. all in all, a pretty good first day at school. and his teammates were equally impressed. they feel like the offense is in good hands. >> he's got his hands full. he's got a huge task ahead of him, being the leader of his team, but any time you got a guy like that who not only is talented, but also wants to win what cares about him and has a work ethic, you set yourself up for good things. >> he's a very composed young guy. he's ready. he's definitely the total page. >> later in sports, we'll take

caught on tape, a pooch poaching, like you have never seen before. this one happened at a pet store in long island, new york. two men go in. one distracted the clerk. the other one wanders about, getting ready for the heist. and finally, the crook zeros in on his target, and, bam, the guy stuffs a puppy in his pants. the bandits get out of the store. they don't get caught. now there's a reward being offered. try to figure out what's going on there. >> you can really see his face in that picture. they're going to get this guy. the good news, if you live in virginia tonight you are in

the clear. >> the bad news, though, roaches at a popular d.c. pizza spot, and two places caught operating with no hot water. you can't do that. that's just part of tonight's restaurant report. here's investigative reporter russ ptacek. >> reporter: tonight we take you into maryland and d.c. with shocked customers. customers at z pizza beckoned us close enough to see the citation, and for us, to see their reaction. >> here's the violation. >> roaches in the establishment, okay. creative with the pizza. that's kind of messed up. been coming here for a couple of weeks now. >> i haven't seen any roaches, so, yeah. >> reporter: inspectors cited eight violations including live roaches, no hand washing sign, and workers not wearing hair restraints. even if it's a grocery store or a gas stay, like this extra in

upper marlboro, inspectors are looking for food dangers. they shut the deli inside this gas station because they found them operating without any hot water that would allow them to wash their hands or their utensils. the manager blamed a storm- related malfunction. inspectors also found no hot water at gin lounge on 14th street northwest and gunked up soda guns, and an expired license. >> hi, how are you doing? hi, we're here about the health department closure. >> reporter: the manager declined comment at china d.c. noodle. this closure notice citing an imminent health hazard is something a restaurant never wants a customer to see. it means not only did inspectors shut it down, it is still closed, and it hasn't passed a reinspection. inspectors cited the restaurant for operating without a license. except for china d.c. noodle the food spots passed reinspections and are now back in business. if you want to know which restaurants get closed for what

reason first, follow me on twitter. i'm investigative reporter russ ptacek, 9news. >> we'll never have pizza again. >> he's not going to be able to eat anywhere in this town. busy night for you. >> yeah, and most of the storms really did stay north of town as we were anticipating, basically near the mason dixon line. most of these severe thunderstorm watches have been drawn. the only places still up include anne arundel county and prince george's county until 1:00 this morning. so here's a look at those areas where you can see most of it has been dropped. anne arundel county and prince george's until 1:00 this morning. up north into carroll county and baltimore we do have a flash flood warning until 2:00 this morning, and those warnings are in effect because of the storm that did go through. around town, now we see la plata, you've got some storms coming through as well, out toward waldorf and north beach

but none of these storms are severe right now, and i don't expect them to become severe. here's a look at the radar and lightning. boy did we see some pretty good storms come through, but a lot of it is staying to the north of us because the cold front has stalled north. if you see, we're looking at some areas of showers and storms, again just south of the district. la plata, you're looking at still some pretty good downpours as well. there is the potential for flash flooding for where you are. a here's a look at the storm reports. most of them are way up northwest of us, western virginia, also into western maryland, but around here we're talking just pretty good rains and some thunderstorms. we do have some around mineral county, thunderstorm wind damage, with trees that were downed around the area. but again, most of it was not in our immediate area. so that's the good news. so dry for your friday morning commute. more afternoon and evening thunderstorms are likely as that cold front sags closer to us. damaging winds possible. hot and unsettled for your saturday as you head into the

weekend. storm prediction center has included us for a slight risk of severe weather tomorrow. so we're also watching out for damaging winds once again. this includes the entire d.c. metro area. so here's a look at your future cast. again, tomorrow morning lots of sunshine, then we'll see the clouds kind of increasing throughout the day, then the front comes through once in the afternoon, and you can see we'll see showers and storms going through in the afternoon and early evening. and again, those storms could be strong to severe. so we're not quite out of the woods just yet with this cold front. overnight, what can you expect? well, temperatures will be around 70 to the lower 80s, partly cloudy with a couple of showers and thunderstorms left over. here's a look at your next three days. our alert code is yellow for friday because of the unsettled weather. saturday 93 with showers and storms possible. sunday, mostly sunny, hot, around 90 degrees. we can handle that. monday 89, tuesday lower 90s as we head into august, lower 90s,
