>> that was mike. >> temperatures will be climbing into the low 90s by noon and a mix of clouds and sunshine. this afternoon we'll be in the upper 80s by 5:00 thanks to a couple of thunderstorms in spots especially south and southeast of washington. had the big storms yesterday afternoon and evening into pennsylvania. this is 5:00. ohio, west virginia. it came in and it got some areas north of town even northern maryland. but they never quite made it to d.c. and that's okay. this morning we're watching just a few light sprinkles here coming out of west virginia trying to get to winchester and frederick this morning. but other than a sprinkle or two really there's not much going on. temps in the low to mid-70s north. still 78 in d.c. and annapolis. it's 76 at the patuxent river naval air station. highs today into the lower to mid 90s and that's better than yesterday's 100. monika samtani good friday morning just after 5:00. you know that's right. there are absolutely no issues to report at all right now.

all of your lanes are open on your major thoroughfares we have no major accidents to report. or construction as well. all that's been cleared up too. no issues on the beltway. college park in to silver spring. a live look right there at georgia avenue traffic is moving well. no accidents to report like yesterday morning on 270 coming in from frederick, back to the maps this time route 50 is looking good as well from the bay bridge to cheverly inside the beltway all of your northeast corridor thoroughfares look great as well. a live look outside once again too. route 50 at sandy point. everything is running smoothly come off the bridge span. to the beach we will be back in a few minutes. just about 5:02 now. this morning a warning when it comes to going to the gas station and filling up your tank. >> prince george's county police say a string of women have had their purses stolen from their cars at gas stations and all caught on tape. our delia goncalves is lye at one of the -- live at one of

the gas stations in capital heights, good morning delia. >> reporter: good morning jessica you know this is a warning that you hear very often. however, unfortunately with the summer heat, lots of people let their guards down and so this is yet another warning out there for women. this is the wawa on the 1400 block of hampton park boulevard here in capital heights. police say this is just one of the four gas stations tarted by these brazen robbers. let's take a look at the surveillance video taken from a recent purse snapping that happened on -- snatching that happened on wednesday at 6:00 in the evening. this is from a gas station on sheriff road. in the surveillance video you can see the suspect's black mercedes suv circling the pump when suddenly the passenger from that suspect's vehicle leaps into an open window of the victim's car and steals her purse. we spoke to another victim who did not want to be on camera.

here's what she had to say. >> by the time i got out of the car i saw someone jumping in the passenger seat of the car. i looked and it was a guy bent over scooping my stuff out. i jumped back into the car. unfortunately we struggled across the seat and he did make it out. >> i keep my remote in my hand. i lock my door when i leave out and as soon as i get in i lock my door again. >> reporter: keeping your door locked at all times is one thing that you can do to protect yourself. what else police say you can do to protect yourself and prevent yourself from being the next victim. coming up at 5:30. jessica, mike? back to you. >> thank you delia live in capital heights, i can't believe people are doing that these days. >> bizarre. washington's top swim coach may be barred from the olympics after one of his former swimmers accused him of molesting her. usa swimming has now initiated an emergency hearing on allegations against rick curl and could suspend his

membership. the coach allegedly performed oral sex on kelley currin when she was just 13 years old. he's also accused of having intercourse with her by the time she was 14 in an office at school. >> in my 14-year-old mind, 13- year-old mind when it started. i loved him. he could have told me to do anything and i would have done it. because i trusted him. >> she agreed to keep quiet about the molestation more than 20 years ago as part of $150,000 settlement. but said she can no longer remain silent. curl is now taken a leave of absence from the local curlberg swim clubs. will gambling expand in maryland or not? today maryland governor o'malley could announce whether or not there will be a special session to discuss that issue. he's been considering a special session which would discuss allowing table games like blackjack and others and also a new casino site in prince

george's county. if this happens it goes to the voters and they would need to approve an expansion of gambling. the language must be official by august 20th less than a month away. the time right now is 5:05 and i am watching your money. three problems for wall street today. the first one facebook's first profit report as a public company. the social networking site lost $157 million last quarter while revenue growth slowed but it's what facebook didn't say that really got investors. the company offered no guidance on future earnings. another after the balloter amazon.com profits sinking 96%. online retailer spent more on expanding its operations. and starbucks also warning that this profit quarter -- the profits this quarter and next year will come in below expectations. the coffee chain blames weak consumer spending in europe and higher costs for things like milk and coffee beans.

this trio of disappointing profit reports could derail what was a good rally yesterday. checking the numbers -- we can thank europe. the european central bank vowing the keep the euro -- to keep the euro intact. capital one will pay $12 million to resolve allegations the bank violated special protections in federal laws if members of the military -- the members of the military. the justice department says capital one wrongfully foreclosured on some homes and improperly repossessed some cars. but it did not stop there. the government says the bank obtained wrongful court judgments against some service members and improperly denied interest rate relief on some credit card and car loans. summer's more than halfway over. ooh. but don't have to go far to get one of the best vacation spots in america. according to "u.s. news & world

it is 5:09 on this friday morning. pretty quiet out there now. couple of sprinkles out at some of the far western suburbs to west virginia trying to get the winchester. other than that we start quiet this morning but warm and it's going to be hot again. just not as hot as yesterday. we did 100. today we hit about 95 early this afternoon with 92 by noon. mix of clouds and sun. and late this afternoon, chance for a couple of thunderstorms especially south and southeast of town. by 6:00 p.m. we're back in the 80s. i'll be back in about five minutes with the full weekend outlook. right now monika samtani has the timesaver traffic. i am lacking at the inbound side of i-66. all lanes are open and all construction cleared up on the west side of town on 495. back with more traffic coming

up once again in a few minutes. back to you jess. making news at almost 5:10. congress is honoring the victims of the colorado theater shooting. the house and senate passed a resolution recognizing individuals in the theater who selflessly tried to help and protect people in the aurora shooting. 12 people were killed and 58 others were wounded. bullets flying inside a 7/11 in haw thorn, california. two robbers walk into the store and point a gun at the clerk and the customers, a security guard there pulls his gun yells freeze, the suspect points the gun at the security guard. the guard fired but missed and two men took off out of the store. a hearing for a murder case in missouri turned violent outside the courthouse. the guy in the orange white and white shirt going at it there. the fight broke out between the son of the murder suspect and the witness for the prosecution. the witness is in in the orange shirt and heard the suspect

storms are slivering here across parts of west virginia and southern pennsylvania. you'll notice a lot less of the orange and red here especially in the last hour as the area of heavier rain approaches ole kin into winchester and hagerstown and even frederick have reported a few sprinkles the morning. locally we're in the low 70s in many areas to our east. 72 upper marlboro and even north of us lovettsville. 72. reston is 71. to the south alexandria 75 degrees and as we look outside on the michael & son weather camera, pretty picture for you. we got the capitol dome still quite dark at sunrise not until about six after 6:00 this morning. 78 and humidity high at 79%. kind of sticky stuff and a south wind at 5 miles an hour. so what we're looking at temperature-wise across the country. the heat okay ok right now. but -- oklahoma right now. but we've seen a nice break across the upper midwest here and across areas in the northeast. they've been doing fine along the west coast as well. the heat is going to be in the

middle of the country but a little further south over the next few days, looks like oklahoma city and dallas will be the core. not kansas city and st. louis. what we're seeing though the reason that's breaking this boundary is actually passed st. louis. so a nice line or not so nice line of showers and storms which has been across the country producing all sorts of issues especial hi to the north yesterday -- especially to the north yesterday. got hit very hard with a storm that just stayed to our north and west. some of them did stray northern maryland last night but not too much damage thankfully. today the severe weather outlook really has two bullseyes. one in the ohio valley and the other south and east of us, the lower eastern shore and northern neck and spotsylvania, you guys are at a more favorable location for strong thunderstorms than we are here in d.c. and north and west. as we get into the afternoon. futurecast quiet through midday. then this afternoon, we start to pop some thunderstorms to

charlottesville and southern areas again have a better chance of seeing them move across in the afternoon and early evening. we'll quiet down tonight and more showers and storms in the afternoon tomorrow and most of the seven day forecast. so yellow alerts for thunderstorms today and tomorrow. 95 today. mainly 70s tonight with a few upper 60s. 92 tomorrow. with the scattered storms. right now i got to keep a chance of storms in the forecast sunday but isolated storms. best chance of this is going to be east and northeast of d.c.. but we'll still watch it nonetheless with a high sunday around 90. and then next week, we're going to get into the upper 80s monday with thunderstorms. and possible not thunderstorm threat with us through thursday. let's go to monika samtani here at about 5:18. thank you so much howard. good morning everyone. it's 5:00 in the morning and things are looking great all around town. northbound 95 no exception. coming in from dale city to woodbridge all the way up to

and a good friday morning. looking pretty good out here. we have a few sprinkling coming out of west virginia into areas around winchester and frederick and hagerstown this morning. but look how quickly that stuff is going to fall elater leaving partly cloudy and mostly cloudy skies through 9:00 although temperatures 83 degrees and climbing. by lunchtime, 91 degrees with partly sunny skies. you don't see much going on on the radar yet but by 3:00, now to our south and west especially, we're seeing the showers here. down south of culpeper, this stuff is going to be moving east and areas south of town a better chance of seeing some

strong storms for the afternoon and early evening hours. good morning everybody. redskins' day one so far so good. you know in years past the team has practiced hard in the morning when it's cooler outside. than they do a simple walk through in the afternoon. that's no longer the case. the schedule has swapped and despite the soring temperature -- soaring temperatures the redskins motored through the two and a half hour practice in front of hundreds of excited fans. of course the spotlight on robert griffin iii. fans clamoring to see him up close. and it's the first day that we got a chance to see him practice with the entire team. now he wasn't as sharp as mini camp as we saw. he did throw a few ducks at receivers but you know after every play he would go over to the offensive coordinator kyle shanahan and get coaching before moving on. all in all a pretty good first day at school. the teammates were impressed. they feel like the offense is in good hands. >> exciting to watch him and excited to play with him.

those will the areas that -- are the areas that are more under the gun. this morning everything from last night is really falling apart although these showers that came into west virginia a few hours ago are sort of shriveling up. still a couple of sprinkles keeping their act together south of frederick back to winchester, but this is very, very light stuff. temperatures in the low 70s now. frederick at 70. cumberland 73. winchester 75. still upper 70s though on the bay in annapolis. and we've got 75 for the tappahannock airport. monika speaking about better? well, yes. it is. there was an overturned beer truck that's what howard is referring to. and it was on the northbound side of 270 yesterday. since early in the rush hour it was there all day long. not there today. things are looking good coming in on 66 from sterling on the toll road as well. no problems to report in the tysons corner area on the beltway. a live look outside if you're planning to head over on the

inbound side of i-66, here at leesburg pike this is inside the beltway and you can see barely anyone there and you're good to go. back to the maps this time we're going to show you what it looks like on the beltway and then also over to the other side of town. if you're planning to head over gw parkway side, no problems to report all the way inside the beltway heading into the downtown area. same story on 395, let's take a look there. northbound at duke street. a nice ride up to the 14th street bridge. we'll take another look at traffic coming up in my next report. jess and mike? all right, thanks monika. caught on tape. thieves breaking into car dealerships in alexandria and stealing cash and this has been going on since late february. jack taylor toyota hit three times. honda also a target. police believe that two go in and steal the cash and two others are lookouts. if you recognize the suspects please call alexandria police. women should be cautious when you're stopping at the gas station. that's the warning from the prince george's county police.

they say a group has been pulling up and stealing purses from womens' cars as they pump gas. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live in capital heights with more on this crime spree. delia? good morning. >> reporter: good morning jess. something we all have to think about especially you know i always think about this when i head to the gas station. locking my doors and rolling up my windows and those are some tips that police say you should do. especially when you know these people are out here looking for an opportunity. this -- we're on the 1400 block of hampton park boulevard. here in capital heights it's just one of four gas stations in prince george's county where police say women have been the targets of robbery. let's take a look another the video. police caught the suspects' black mercedes suv on surveillance camera around 6:00 in the evening on wednesday at a sheriff road gas station. the suspects circles the pump and when they spot an opportunity, the passenger jumps out and leaps into a

woman's car, grabbing her purse. from the open car window. >> they're leaving their windows down. they're leaving their vehicles unsecured and that's you know -- they're thinking oh i'm just pumping gas. nothing is going to happen. but in fact, that little bit of time is -- that small window is enough opportunity for our suspects to snatch those purses. >> reporter: and as you can see in that surveillance video that's exactly what he was doing. he was circling around kind of scoping the area out waiting for that one moment and it only takes seconds to leap into someone's car and grab that purse. so police say other than being aware of your surroundings roll up the windows and always lock the doors and most importantly don't keep valuables like your purse in plain sight. back to you. >> thank you delia. i've never thought about that before. a man is recovering this morning after being stabbed

multiple times at the silver spring post office. all because the suspect thought the victim was jumping ahead in line? this unfolded yesterday. the victim was told by the clerk to step aside to finish up paperwork and then come back to her. apparently another customer in the new hampshire avenue post office thought the man was cutting line. so police say the suspect waited for the man outside and stabs him several times. the postal employees pepper sprayed the suspect and investigators say that may have saved the victim's life. the suspect ran off but was quickly captured. so do you think that speed camera fines in d.c. are too high? well, you'll be happy to know at least one of the council members is fighting to change that. tommy wells is now formed a task force to review the fines. he says the fines have skyrocketed in recent years and many drivers see this as just a money grab. instead of a tool to make roads safer. the time right now just about 5:35. and i am watching your money.

yes, it is that time again. start planning for your kids back to school. a new survey says participants are fen -- parents are actually going to spend more money than last year and of course we found you ways that you can save. >> you know this is so important. this is a learning experience. get them involved with shopping and budgeting and getting all the backpacks together from last year. and really figuring out what needs to be bought and what doesn't need to be purchased. and then creating is budget around that. >> it's very important to teach your children these financial messages early. tell us a little bit about the results of the survey. parents are planning on spending a little bit more this year right? >> you know it's fascinating actually. 44% of the respondents from the survey said that they believe that their finances are actually improving and because of that, they're going to be spending a little bit more than they have in the past. you know so it's a prerecession

level. this is really interesting. now, 32% say that they anticipate spending at prerecession levels but they also have a budget which is really great. because last year not so many people had a budget. >> erica one of the ways we're keeping up with the joneses in recent years is with technology. one kid gets an ipad and every kid wants an ipad or iphone. how to manage that? >> oh, this is very interesting. parents have learned most of the parents who -- who did respond on this survey said that they're going to be really focusing on apparel. you know just getting their kids clothes. you know and that's really interesting and they said you know what? we're not going to have all the latest gear. the latest smart phones. you know, we're going to go -- we're going to keep it basic. that's really exciting news is that we've learned from the past that you don't have to have everything. good solid gear, great. but you know this is -- again

like the 100s. 95? >> still better than 100. >> true. >> still kind of sticky out there this morning. and we still have a threat for a few thunderstorms. that really hasn't changed much but yesterday, the concern was north of town. today, the higher probability is for those thunderstorms will be south of washington. southern maryland. fredericks burke spotsylvania and the northern neck of virginia you have to watch it more so than here in d.c. north and west. let's talk about the day planner though because we're starting out relatively quiet. still a couple of sprinkles far north and west with a mix of clouds and sun through the morning and midday hours but look how we climb. 91 by noon. 4:00 94. that's going to be close to the hottest time of the day. forecasting a high of 95 at national. with chance of a thunderstorm or two by 4:00 into the evening hours. although by 8:00. might not see that much leftover. temperatures there back in the 80s. this morning, we're watching a few showers and the heavier rains and thunderstorms -- a few hours ago just three hours ago have really fallen apart across central areas of west virginia moving into eastern and west virginia.

weather threat two spots. one to the ohio valley, the other one just to the south and east of the d.c. area. in fact some of the southern suburbs into calvert maybe anne arundel, there's the northern neck all in that yellow area with damaging wind gusts being the primary concern from some of the stronger storms we could see. futurecast breaking it down this way. through midday relatively quiet and partly sunny here. we're looking at the showers and i want you to watch south and west of d.c. as we get into the early afternoon. how the showers and storms start to pop up here and then they move across the area generally south of washington. that doesn't mean we won't see a thunderstorm here or can't see a thunderstorm here in the district but computers are focusing all of the attention really just south and southeast of town. we'll get into the evening hours by midnight still a couple of showers southern pennsylvania and southern new jersey. overnight relatively quiet and then tomorrow with the daytime heating going to pop up the thunderstorms once again. and we'll probably pop a couple of storms on sunday as well.

statement. have you ever wondered what four tons of marijuana looks like? well, here's your chance to find out. look at your screen right this. the u.s. coast guard pulled over a boat near mexico because of suspicious activity. after a chase the coast guard caught the boat and found all of the pot. the brown bricks right there. the drugs were worth about $8 million and several people arrest. the coast guard says it's confiscated 50 tons of marijuana this year worth about $90 million. apparently one of these guys was really desperate for a pet. flush flush this was in a -- this was in a pet store in long island, new york. two men walk into the store and one distracts the clerk. one distracts -- we love to show you the video when we get it. we will. one distracts the clerk and the other wandered around trying to get ready for the big heist. they zeroed in on a puppy and stuffed it down his pants and tried to get out of the stauffer without et -- store without getting caught. that maid it and now there's --
