sources say the suspect who is now in custody was facing termination at work and may have been planning a mass attack against his employer. sources tell cbs news correspondent bob orr that the man told a former co-worker he was going to shoot the boss and shoot up the workplace. well, police went to his home and allegedly found loads of weapons including semiautomatic rifles, handguns, and ammunition. bob orr says police do not think the man is connected to any group. and police are not releasing any information about the suspect. there is a news conference that is scheduled for 1:00 this afternoon. we will have much more information on this story on our website, wusa9.com. and on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. place your bets. maryland governor mar ten o'malley is call -- martin

o'malley is calling lawmakers back to annapolis. 9news now's scott broom was at the state house for the morning's announcement and on the phone now with more information. what can you tell us scott? >> reporter: j. c, he has called auspicious of the legislature -- a special session of the legislature for august 9th to resolve once and for all the thorniness of expanded gambling in maryland in particular the relentless push to put a vegas style resort at national harbor at the foot of the wilson bridge in prince george's county. the calling of a special session is a signal there's agreement among the big players on provisions of a bill that would expand gambling in maryland to allow a casino in prince george's county and to allow table games and come up with a complex fax formula that would ensure the casinos that are already built will not suffer financially. the hurry to get this done in the heat of the summer is this because this boils down to the

need to put this on the ballot in november for a statewide referendum. they approved slots in maryland back in 2007 but bottom line for prince george's county, $69 million a year in additional local revenue. and 2,000 new jobs. baker, the county executive is 100% behind this. more than $200 million per year for state coffers will come as well. again a special session on the legislature on the gambling every called for -- issue called for august 9th in annapolis. back to you jc. scott broom in annapolis. a stabbing at a post office in montgomery county. 67-year-old ray alfred young has been charged with second degree attempted murder. police say that young stabbed another person at the post office in colesville, maryland yesterday. he was reportedly upset about

not being allowed back in line after stepping aside to complete some business. the stabbing victim is expected to recover. young will have a bond relater today -- review later today. she was jogging on the capitol crescent attack when -- she was attacked near fletcher's boat house. u.s. park police say that the man approached her, put a choke hold on her, she lost consciousness. and then when she awoke, she found that her pants were down and the suspect was touching her. she scrolled and the man ran off. -- screamed and the man ran off. a new report says that airline tickets have reached an all time high. the transportation department says the average price of a domestic ticket soared to $373 and the first three months of the year. now that's nearly a 5% jump over the same period last year.

and $520 the report says that passengers in cincinnati paid the highest average price for a plane ticket. and at $157, atlantic city, new jersey had the lowest airline ticket price. all right. the games are about to begin. opening ceremonies for the olympics will be tonight. everyone is excited about that. london has been preparing for this shining moment on the world's stage for years. andrew spencer has a preview. >> reporter: it's the world's largest sporting event and london is its home until the middle of august. athletes have been arriving at heathrow airport ready for their moment in history. >> we are very happy because for me the first olympic games. and i am on television. -- nervous that we are very happy. >> when we step off and get behind the block, we're doing what we've practiced to do for our whole entire life.

>> reporter: the olympic torch is also ready to shine after relay stops at number 10 downing street with the british prime minister and buckingham palace with the pass off in front the duke and duchess of cambridge. the torch will arrive at the olympic stadium during tonight's opening ceremony and light the olympic caldron. canny boyle is in charge of the spectacular which we hear will have dancing and farm animals. ♪ boyle is probably best known for the megahit movie "slumdog millionaire." london isn't known for its sunny days so british airways flew in apache rain dancers from arizona to perform a rainbow dance to ensure nice weather. a british artist wants everyone to get into the spirit of the games by ringing bells today all over the country. >> could be a brilliant sound. you know. if wherever you are in britain you could hear that.

police on long island are looking for a dog kidnapper. surveillance tape shows the thief putting a pint-sized puppy in his clothing. the one pound, 9-week-old pomeranian is valued at about $1,000. the pet store owner believes that the dog's already been sold. and the owner is offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest. people are invited to get a

life pieces to masterpieces. exactly what do you do? >> thank you. well, yes we've been providing opportunities for 16 years for african-american males that live in low income communities in greater washington, d.c.. through unlocking potential and developing character and helping them realize that they can transform their lives and their own communities. >> what ages do you start? >> from ages 3 all the way to 25 years old. we work with our boys our young men. >> okay and what hours? >> well, right now we're in the full blown summer program which is from 8:30 until 6:30 every day. and then on -- we have saturday academy for our older boys. >> uh-huh. >> where we assist them with their academics. and -- and development. and then we have our afterschool programs. throughout the entire year. >> we're looking at some beautiful artwork, now where did this come from? >> our young men create it. this is the way they develop their character and help them get connected to wanting to

and i approve this message. missed us for the most part. but much of the northeast is cleaning up from severe storms that occurred last night. crews are working to restore power to hundreds of thousands of customers. terrell brown has more now from new york city. >> reporter: in manhattan a line of fast moving and powerful storms raced across more than half the country. in new york, trees and power lines are down and the nearby roof was shredded after a possible tornado temperature touched down. -- touched down. a youtube user captured an explosion ripping through his yard when a tree knocked down a high tension power line. the severe weather stretched throughout new york to parts of pennsylvania, connecticut, new

jersey and the ohio referral slow. in cleveland, four workers were hurt when high winds nearly blew them off the scaffolding. they were forced to smash the buildings' windows to get to safety. one inch of hail was reported and streets are flooded in cleveland and akron, ohio. they are strikingly similar to the ones that battered the midwest and mid atlantic last month. at the height of yesterday's storms more than 200,000 customers in three states were without power. >> that was terrell brown reporting. the storms are blamed for the deaths of at least two people in new york. all right, let's take a look at our forecast for the weekend. i'm ready. >> well, the heat is building today. we're going to see a slight tempering for the heat over the next couple of days but this thunderstorm chances today a little bit tonight and again on saturday. sunday is the better day. here's a look at the forecast for the afternoon. as temperatures are climbing into the mid if not upper 90s in a couple of spots. we are already rather toasty out there as you can see.

potentially some thunderstorms developing also this afternoon. better chance of that is going to be south of 66 and 50 and let's say north of d.c. but we all have to watch out for those storms and with a cold front sliding through, it will be in the mid 80s by 9:00 and not much of a confident but still in the low -- cold front but still in the low 90s tomorrow after being in the mid 70s tonight. to the west we have showers and storms up in western pennsylvania. the stronger ones are coming into west virginia now. southern west virginia. and i think as this loin gets east of the mountains into the -- even greater heat and humidity. we're going to see quite a bait of activity for the afternoon here especially south of d.c.. heat advisory until 7:00. heat index values 105 to 108. we've been seeing a lot of heat advisories and should be used to that by now. i know it's kinds of tough though from d.c. and fairfax and african-american south and east -- prince william south and east here at 95 that's where the high heat and humidity are going to add up. northern shenandoah valley low 80s. 79 cumberland but 91 at national and 91 at the pax

river naval air station and looking outside on our michael & son weather camera. partly sunny conditions. a few puffy clouds. feeling like 95 though with the humidity way up there. dew point 68 and a north wednesday at the in a moment at -- wind at the moment at 14 miles per hour. here's the big picture, you can see the showers and storms here in west virginia moving east. and we've got to watch out for that because the storm prediction center, those guys in norman, oklahoma study all the severe weather parameters and believe we're in a pretty good spot this afternoon to get some strong to severe storms with the main threat being damaging wind gusts. you can see it here from around charlottesville to frederick, maryland up to scranton, pennsylvania as we look quick lie at the futurecast. the storms do pop this afternoon and then they hit the southern areas harder than northern areas, just stay up on the weather. have the yellow alert today for the storms and again tomorrow for the storms. 98. 96. mid 70s tonight with some upper 60s in the real cool spots. 92 tomorrow again, scattered storms in the afternoon. only an isolated storm sunday and i think most of it is going to be east of the bay.

national aquarium on 14th street because guess what? it is shark weekend. they're going to be all kinds of activities. face painting, kids can make their own t-shirts, i have jay bradley here who was the cur raptor and he was kind enough to bring -- curator and he was kind to bring -- this was a shark mouth? >> yes, this is a jaw from a tiger shark. >> oh my gosh. why so fascinated with sharks? >> i think they're just fascinating animals. i think it has to do -- the ocean is largely is misunderstood environment and sharks are largely misunderstood. just a really interesting animal and we want to help people learn more about them and understand a little bit more. >> and usually i think during this time of the year down in the southern part in florida, there are shark sightings and people are always so afraid. because they're just incredible. >> yes, i mean generally during the summer when you know you have sharks that are moving up and down the coast and you also have more people that are going@beach. there's -- to the beach. there's going to be more opportunity to have interaction
