i'm going to blow everyone up. >> prescott also said he wanted to see his supervisor's brain splatter all over the sidewalk. after the massacre in aurora, one week ago, police took his threat seriously and first went to his home yesterday. >> during a field interview with their officers, the individual was wearing a t- shirt that says guns don't kill people, i do. >> early this morning, they found an arsal of 25 weapon, including semi-automatic rifles, semi-automatic pistols and one shotgun. like the alleged killer in aurora, he had an ar15, and uncovered thousands of rounds of ammunition. >> we had no specific timetable, but we took it as it was going to be imminent, based on the conversation with the employees and we acted on that threat. >> sources tell 9news that

prescott has a gun collector's license, which makes him exempt from the law, limiting him to one handgun purchase a month. state and federal charges are pending against prescott as the police investigation continues. andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> we should note that prescott worked as a subcontractor for several years now. he most recently lived in crofton, he lived in katonsville, where neighbors say he was into computers. >> he was quiet. he didn't look like he would do anything or think of anything. >> working on computers. he liked computers, am i right? he did his own thing on the computers. very, very quiet. never had a problem out of him. >> now he tried to talk with a man prescott allegedly threatened, but he did not want to talk to us. today's bust in maryland comes one week to the day after the colorado theater shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens and dozens more.

now we're learning more ant the accused gunman, james holmes. a court motion filed by his lawyer says holmes was under the treatment of a psychiatrist at the university of colorado in denver. that is the same place he had been studying as a grad student. holmes lawyers filed the motion to find out who leaked the information about the notebook that holmes sent to that psychiatrist. contained descriptions of an attack to kill people. his lawyers argue that information should have been shielded by doctor, patient privilege. the olympics start tonight and one big question, will d.c.'s top swim coach be there? bruce leshan reports, there is new fallout from the allegations that rick curl had sex with one of his young swimmers 23 years ago and then paid her to keep quiet about it. >> sources tell us that local law enforcement is following up on these allegations even though the alleged abuse dates back so long ago. >> we followed up what we deem historic or cold cases in the

past with successful results. >> still, no answer at the door of rick curl's $1.5 million home in vienna, although it is clear someone is home. it is unclear if curl has gone off to help coach at the olympics in london despite the sex abuse allegations against him. kelly curen says the swim coach had sex with her for years starting when she was about 13 and he was 33. >> the guy should be in jail and not center stage at the olympic. >> u.s.a. swimming, which governs the american olympic swimming effort is also investigating, but they did not get back to us yet about the status of that investigation today. bruce leshan, 9news now. >> and maryland lawmakers will head back to annapolis to try and resolve the issue of expanded gambling in the state. governor martin o'malley

announced he is reconvening the legislature on august 9 for the special session on gaming. scott broom is in annapolis tonight where the focus is on the relentless push to put a vegas style casino on the banks of the potomac on the national harbor. >> at stake for prince georges county, as many as 6,000 jobs and $69 million a year in revenue to help solve the county's unending budget crisis. >> i feel good about the construction of what is coming out there. i feel confident that the citizens of prince georges county will vote overwelmingly for six sites, because they understand the need for dollars for jobs. >> baker was among the gambling supporters pranking the governor today, who sought the entire state budget held hostage by the gambling debate in april, forcing a crisis special session in may. he vowed never again. >> when we adjourned without having accomplished the budget, that was kind of a low point in my service here.

and i want to put those behind us. i want to resolve this issue so we can move forward. the issues around this aren't terribly new. >> the decision to hold a second special session in 2012 is a signal of political agreement on a complex deal. to allow a casino site to be located in prince georges county. the state's sixth. to expand gambling statewide to include vegas style table games. all with a complicated tax formula to ensure that existing casinos don't get burned financially. >> we will work together, hopefully we can get this done in a matter of days. >> real reason for a special session late in august is the fact we have to prepare to put something on the ballot. the ultimate decider is going to be the citizens of the state of maryland. >> maryland voters overwelmingly approve slot machine gambling and prince georges county voters were on board. the supporters of this expansion are counting on a similar outcome. if that happens in november,

there could be a casino and national harbor by 2014. in annapolis, scott broom, 9news now. >> one possible fly in that ointment, promoters of gambling and the cap center at largo promise they'll fight against any bid to make the national harbor the one and only slot site allowed in the county. republicans in maryland's general assembly are criticizing o'malley's decision that minority whip released this joint statement and says, the harrowing pressure cooker of a special session is not the place to debate an issue as complex of the expansion of gaming. more over, the las vegas gambling interests should be chilling to anyone who believes in honest and open government. the special session may serve the interest of the aspirations and new special friends, but does not serve the interest of the citizens of maryland. end of quote. today's hot and humid weather has us under a code yellow alert. we are looking at the possibility of storms.

anything popping up, anny? >> just south and southwest of town, derek. so good news is the severe thunderstorm watch has been canceled for culpeper and fredericksburg. it's really far south of town where the severe threat remains for tonight. here's a look at the risk for severe weather. south of fredericksburg, westmoreland and points south. so we're not concerned about severe weather in our area. live doppler 9,000hd, you can see we have showers toward warrenton and storms in fredericksburg, but no severe storms. a lot is pushing through, most of the big storms are well south of us into the richmond area. you can see around the beltway, we could see some showers and light rain come through. it's not going to be a washout tonight. warrenton around 66. manassas, fairfax, you may see light rain come through. for tonight, here's what we are expecting. generally partly cloudy conditions. we can see some showers and storms. i think some, especially south and southeast could be strong.

a 48-foot piece of granite with silhouettes of 29 miners now marks the memory of those who died in west virginia's upper big branch mine. the memorial was dedicated today in whitesville just miles away from the site of that disaster. and it includes the names and ages of the men who lost their lives. the quote is there as well. it says come to me all you labor and i will give you rest. the explosion was the worst u.s. mine disaster in 40 years. new york mayor says the chick-fil-a controversy is none of the government's business. led to push to legalize it, but strongly disagrees with the mayors who declared the fast food chain is no longer welcome in their cities. bloomberg says cities should never ask about political beliefs before they issue

business permits. and that is another major corporate executive joins the debate over gay marriage. this time it is the amazon.com founder and ceo. now he and his wife donated $2.5 million to the campaign to defend washington state's law legalizing gay marriage. now that state's law is on hold until it goes to a voter referendum in november. the donation is believed to be the largest single donation to support gay marriage. another chance of storms. will the cycle break for the weekend? we can only hope. stick around for anny. she'll tell you if those hopes are well founded. plus -- >> tens and thousands pack the olympic stadium for opening ceremonies. i'm in london. we'll have that story coming up. over the next four months, you have a choice to make.

not just between two political parties, or even two people. it's a choice between two very different plans for our country. governor romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. roll back regulations on big banks. and he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. but you know what? we tried that top down approach. it's what caused the mess in the first place. i believe the only way to create an economy built to last is to strengthen the middle class. asking the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way. so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing, and home-grown american energy for good middle class jobs.

the 30th olimpiad is underway. the ceremony for the 2012 summer games is just about done. you're taking a live look at the stadium. now begins the two weeks of competition between 10,500 athletes for more than 200 different countries. all the pomp and circumstance from olympic park. >> reporter: the olympic torch ended its 8,000 mile journey at london's tower bridge on opening day. queen elizabeth held a reception for world leaders and other dignitaries, including

first lady, michelle obama. the first lady is leading the delegation. about a thousand children joined her for some games and exercise at the u.s. ambassador's residence. they played soccer, tennis, and tug of war. there were a few first day glitches as officials rang in the game. cab drivers went on strike and caused heavy traffic jams because they are not allowed to use the olympic express lanes. fans were turned away from an archery event after purchasing bogus tickets. and a small group of protesters demonstrated against dow chemical. more than 60,000 spectators are filing into the olympic stadium for the more than $42 million opening ceremony. but for those who couldn't get a ticket, the pub is the place to watch. in central london, british flags hold over many of the pubs. grab a pint and watch the opening ceremonies just across town. >> because we probably spend

most of our time in a pub on a friday anyway. it's coincidental that the olympics are on. it's a good mix of both. >> 302 events will take place in 26 sports over the next two weeks. so this british bash won't be over any time soon. at the summer olympics, cbs news, london. >> and the current installment of the olympics has seen one record fall. a legally blind archer from south korea helped set the record for most points in the men's team shoot earlier this morning. before the opening ceremonies, first lady, michelle obama met personally with members of team u.s.a. at the olympics. she had a pep talk for them. >> i know how hard and how much time you all put into being who you are and it is no small feet at all. and i just wanted to come here and tell you that very thing. that we are all proud of you all. we really are. you have a country back home who is rooting for you every

single second. >> in fact, she told the athletes as far as she's concerned, they are already winners. maryland's only ski resort may have new life. owners say they are talking with two potential buyers. the resort is under bankruptcy protection. they filed for chapter 11 last october. it's asking for an extension until october 9 in hopes of closing that sale. president obama approved virginia's request for federal disaster aide to help pay for the costs of the storm. that disaster decloration covers 47 counties and 15 cities, including most of virginia. the governor says state and local governments spent $27 million dealing with the storm emergencies and all the damage. maryland's governor filed a similar request today for six counties in the free state. and with today's heat and

humidity, we have the chance for severe weather tonight. so, we have issued a code yellow alert. anny, doesn't look too bad so far. >> we've had some changes where the severe thunderstorm watch has been pulled back, canceled for culpeper and fredericksburg. so places south of fredericksburg into the westmoreland county area and virginia, you are under that threat for severe thunderstorm. that's not to say culpeper, fredericksburg, you may have a stray storm that turns to become severe. that chance is very, very low. here's a look at the risk for severe weather. you can see it does not include the immediate d.c. metro area. points well south of fredericksburg and into central virginia. this is until 10:00 tonight. here's a look at your live doppler 9,000hd, we do see some showers around warrenton and also of course down toward fredericksburg. right now we do not have any warnings. you can see some of the heavier rain is indicated by the yellow. it's headed toward spotsylvania. that cell is heading, basically

looks like northeast right now. most of the storms will be heading out to the east for the most part. you can see charlottesville and richmond is looking at the intense, heavier storms. and right now, closer in, around fredericksburg, culpeper, warrenton getting light rain. this could impact the beltway this evening. so we may want to bring the umbrella just in case you do encounter a shower tonight. right now, michael and son weather camera, cloudy conditions. 90 degrees is the current temperature. dew points in the 60s. so still sticky out there. 86 in manassas. 82 in gaithersburg. 90 for annapolis. and 82 degrees for culpeper. so that rain helping cool down the air for you. so still muggy and unsettled the next couple of days. thunderstorms well south of town. the strongest ones, damaging wind gusts are a concern. saturday, we have a chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms. sunday, thunderstorm chances go down even more.

just a stray storm possible. future cast looks like this. most of the action will be south of us. maybe light rain in the area for tonight. tomorrow morning should be dry, so if you want to go on that bike ride, you should be fine. now the afternoon and the evening, you can still see scattered showers and thunderstorms once again. tonight, partly cloudy and muggy with showers and storms. south of town, low 69 to 75 degrees. mid 70s in downtown. lower 70s out in the suburbs. now tomorrow morning, looking at partly sunny conditions. it will be muggy. air quality is code yellow. no major concerns there. now for the afternoon, some scattered showers and storms are possible. maybe a couple could be strong. highs in the lower 90s. all right, temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s for your saturday. sunday a little cooler, but still hot. check out your next three days. 9 weather alert code is yellow because of a chance for storms. sunday is green because we're looking at only a stray storm

in the mail bag tonight, the wusa9 facebook page overflowing with comments. that's the fellow in maryland who threatened to go to a job and shoot up everybody. linda mckneel write, i'm concerned that as much as this guy was a threat, we can't treat him like a criminal until a crime was committed. intent of law is not the same as breaking the law. nor is owning guns. where is the nonbiased, full rounded story? one week after aurora, a very well armed and perhaps unbalanced man says, i'm a joker and i'm going to load my guns and blow everyone up. we report that urgently. i don't know what you mean by make that more balanced and

christina says the boss did the right thing. he has been committed for evaluation and not be allowed to have weapons legally again. the system worked this time. thank god. indeed, and then we got this e- mail on the controversy surrounding chick-fil-a restaurant. he doesn't like gay marriage, it's all about religion for him. but craig in king george, virginia, says all the talks of boycotts is wrong. in the 60s, gay was against the law and they fought for tolerance. now those same people who demanded tolerance are intolerant of chick-fil-a. the owner is entitled to his beliefs just as much as anyone else, but even if you don't agree, why put people out of work? you know what, craig, i'm with you. the owner has the right to believe whatever he wants as long as he treats everybody fairly. as far as i know, that's what he does. frankly, i don't think we're in a good place when we see politicians and cities wanting to keep people and denying business permits because they
