everybody is that there is no excuse not to be extraordinary. >> his father will travel to peru tomorrow to bring his son back home for what he called a proper christian burial. ken molestina, 9 news now. >> a local police officer is recovering after being shot while working security detail at a longly park nightclub. officer rachel jacobs was shot in the leg last night after she clashed with a rowdy group of pateons at the gavelon nightclub. she kicked the group out of the club and then they drive by and the driver fired gunshots, one of the bullets striking the officer. >> this is the 5th time in a little more than 18 months that a prince george's county police officer has been shot at or shot. this is unprecedented. >> police apprehended the

alleged gunman after the shooting. he has been identified as 32- year-old kelly gillis and he is facing several charges including first-degree attempted murder. >> a howard county officer was struck by an alleged drunk driver this morning near washington boulevard in laurel. private first class earnest newhouse was in his cruiser at a stop sign waiting to make a left turn when another vehicle jumped the curb, cross the median and struck his cruiser. the driver of that car identified as yolanda marchinson. tonight the officer is reportedly in stable condition. the funeral is set on monday for joe schennay, a pregnant teacher from d.c. who drowned in north carolina. she had been vac aationing this week at the outer banks when she and her husband were swepted away by a rip current.

the woman and her baby could not be saved. surae chinn talked with the family. >> reporter: the couple was taking a last vacation before the baby arrived. her husband and producer was documenting and film their vacation so he could one day share it with his daughter. but instead matt had captured the last moments of his wife's life. >> our hearts are broken. i think everyone that will come to the service on monday will see that matt's love is a love of a lifetime. >> reporter: mark johnson talks about two lives lost but a love story cut short. the couple was expecting their first child, 31-year-old joe schennay was six months pregnant, vacationing with her husband near cape hatteras when she slipped off the sand bar. the strong waves pulled her under and her husband tried to keep her afloat for half an hour when both went under. they were found face down from the shore and flown to the hospital. >> he had become unconscious at

some point. >> the doctors were able to revive matt but found the baby had no heartbeat and mom had no pulse. >> you could tell she was going to be the greatest mother of all. and for us, she was this angel. >> reporter: schennay taught 2nd grade at river school in northwest washington. by all accounts an exceptional teacher for the hearing impaired. on the school's website and front there is a tribute to the beloved teacher. >> i brought my son in to see matt and to see jill and i just wanted -- in our own way -- to tell jill that we loved her. >> reporter: the school set up a tribute page and parents are writing in. one potomac family writes, jill loved our son thomas and he loved her. we don't know how to tell him she's gone. it is going to tear up his heart. she was a magical teacher. most of jill's family is in roanoke, virginia, where she will be laid to rest on monday. i'm surae chinn for 9 news now. >> a armed robbery has ended

with the murder of a jewelry store employee. the victim 52-year-old herndon, virginia man failed to return home from his shift and his family notified arlington police. officers discovered the victim inside the jewelry store located in the 3200 block of columbia pike. police are not saying how the man died. they believe surveillance video captured the suspect's picture as he entered the store. it is not a clear image but police add the suspect is black, a male, about 5-7, wearing a knee on traffic vest. >> well last month, a chilling story of of two children attending a free lunch program was shot as they stood with their adult counselor on the sidewalk in southeast washington. at the time police were confident they would find the two men who were exchanged gunfire in the middle of the day, surrounded by neighborhood children. but more than a month later, and nobody has been arrested. the two children and their adult counselor were shot on

june 25th while waiting for free meals at savannah and 19th streets in southeast. witnesses say they were caught in the middle of a running gun battle. >> the intended target we believe was another individual that was running past, maybe even chased by the other individuals. certainly we don't think that the children were the intended victims. >> a 7-year-old boy was wounded in the shoulder and an 8-year- old hid in the ankle. the adult chaperone was shot. all have recovered wounds. the families have declined interview requests for fear of retaliation. >> it is pitful because they have kids and they can't even stand outside. >> lanier said the suspects have not been caught, after the community leaders called on people to speak up, if only anonymously. >> we need to come together as a community and set up some community watch groups or something like that in order to just keep things safe for our kids. >> if you have information in

but that should pass on through in the next 30 minutes or so. right now most of the action we're seeing is out toward the eastern shore. there is still a little bit around rehoboth, bethany beach and heading out to sea. right now the camera looking good. mainly partly cloudy skies for the overnight and clearing up toward sunrise but for right now, looking fantastic. temperature at ronald reagan airport at 75 degrees and we scoured out a lot of the humidity with the next worth west so we don't have too much of a heat index to deal with at least for the overnight. currently sitting in the 70s around the beltway. we will begin to push on down into the 60s for some of the northern and eastern zones later on tonight. the loop of satellite and radar shows what is moving off to the sea and we still have action in virginia, raleigh, and toward north carolina. overall a partly cloudy and muggy start to your sunday morning. we'll see some gradual clearing through midday and early afternoon. so if you have any plans before

brunch, i think you'll be fine. by the time we hit 90 degrees that will pop up the showers and thunderstorms late in the day. highs tomorrow around 90 degrees for reagan national. rest of us fit into the upper range 80s. so let's take a look at our future-cast forecast model. fairly quiet through the overnight until we get into tomorrow afternoon where we'll see the pop of moisture and then clear out into monday morning. for most of us though, the next the days are going to look pretty good. we have a warm day to start us out tomorrow. very hot by tomorrow afternoon. but it will feel more comfortable without the humidity. we'll stick with code yellow for tomorrow because of the late-day shower or thunderstorm chance and pull it back to green on monday because of shower chances only about 20%. but for the next several days, our temperatures will at least ease back into the upper 80s to start the workweek and slowly with southwest winds will build back the humidity. >> thanks a lot. >> redskins? >> day three done and they have the day off tomorrow.

shutout by a rookie pitcher and seeing the six-game win streak snapped, the nats rebounded tonight in a big way. zimmerman going 6 innings and striking out six and the nats bats backed him up. cory brown filling in for a sick bryce harper. top of the 4th, cory brown gets the first hit of his procareer and it is a good one. a bomb to left center into the bullpen. nats on the board first. four batters later, tyler moore gets in on the action of the two run shot. the brewers add a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1 but zimmerman fired back in the 5th. jordan zimmerman picked up his 8th win as a national and after the game davie is happy with the new guy cory brown. >> it is fun to see the guys have a good game. and he's been playing good. he hadn't got his hits but he looks better than he did last

year. >> orioles hosting the red hot oakland. in the 4th, out of the park. athletics have won nine of the last 10 games and take this 1, 6-1 the final. the results were known this morning but it was still exciting. men's 400 individual medley relay pitted the most decorated olympic swimmer against the world champ. we take you -- we have some photos for you. michael phelps set the world record in the 400 im in beijing and at that time said he would never swim it again. but he did. and in a quest for 7 medals. unfortunately, this wasn't one of them. fellow american ryan lochte bolted off the starting block and was never really challenged. lochte beat the pack by more than 3 seconds this morning. michael phelps finished fourth and off the medal stand. the women's basketball team is more of a favor to win gold than the men.
