hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. residents and businesses along the u street corridor in northwest are on edge after a second shooting in which people are hit by stray bullets. the latest incident happened early saturday morning, and tonight 9news has learned that one of the victims is a producer with nbc news here in washington. on-line reports say the other

victim works for the washington post. both victims are women. matt jablow joins us more -- joins us live with more details. >> reporter: people are on edge along the u street corridor. having witnessed the rebirth of the corridor, john sheffield said he's extremely troubled to hear that two women were shot last night near 12th and u. >> it's kind of scary. >> reporter: both women, according to council men jim graham, completely innocent victims. >> they're unrelated, they're not friends, they didn't know each other, so is it looks as though the target was somewhere else and this was pretty random. >> something's got to be done. >> reporter: last night's shooting was the second in the past week alone. around 2:30 last saturday morning two other women were shot, both in the leg, after two groups of men opened fire.

so far police have arrested three men in connection with that shooting. all of this is very troubling, no question about it. the neighborhood is very upset. >> reporter: it certainly. people we spoke with said the recent violence is not only upsetting but extremely frightening. >> of course it is, especially that women got shot, but for anybody to get shot. >> reporter: should you have any information about the shootings you're asked to crimestoppers. luckily none of the four victims from the two shootings was seriously injured. >> matt, thanks a lot for that report. we're learning more about a sexual assault on a popular walking and biking try. police say the victim was jogging when she was attacked. they say after the assault the suspect ran away towards fletcher's boathouse. tonight police have released a detailed sketch.

a black male, medium skin, approximately 5' 8" to 5' 11". he's described as muscular built with dreads three to four inches long. call u.s. park police if you have information about the suspect or other similar incidents on the capital crescent trail. police are searching for the killer of an arlington jewelry store owner tonight. they haven't confirmed the victim's name but the family has. they say 52-year-old tommy wong died during an armed robbery. surae chinn talked with wong's daughter. >> reporter: tommy wong was a watch maker and jeweler. he had owned capital jewelers for five years and his daughter said her dad would come home late on friday night, usually by 10:30, but when midnight rolled around and he still

hadn't come home they called police. >> i just want to know why he didn't just take what he needed and leave my dad alone. he could have just taken what he needed. he didn't have to take his life, too. >> reporter: vivian wong had talked to her father that afternoon. >> earlier that day he called me around 1:00. everything was fine. >> reporter: that was just three hours before police say someone walked in and killed her father in an armed robbery. >> what more is there to say? >> reporter: the jewelry store had been locked for hours until police came and broke the glass door to get in. >> they wouldn't let us go inside and see him. they came out and told me he passed. >> reporter: neighboring businesses have been leaving flowers at that time store where arlington police are dusting for prints. the family said the previous store owner had been robbed

before, and wong had taken extra steps to keep safe. >> he's a very careful guy, but no one expected something like this. >> reporter: customers say there was tight security here that you would have to get buzzed in to get inside the store, but the suspect wore a reflective invest that could have caused mr. wong to let his guard down. a shattered family, wong's wife, son, and daughter hope to find the killer. vivian sees the jewelry given by her father now more precious than ever and keeping it close to her heart. >> he's very hard working, he did everything, he worked hard for his family. he's a better dad than i could ever ask for. that's all i can say. >> reporter: the family is hoping someone would recognize the man in these surveillance pictures. he was wearing a neon traffic vest. police say they consider him armed and dangerous. if you recognize him, call police. i'm surae chinn for 9news now. >> a man's body is found in the

potomac river and tonight police want a name and how he got there. a boater discovered the body around 10:00 this morning. authorities say there are no obvious signs of trauma. the body was taken to the medical exam ner's office in baltimore j. a prince george's county police officer is out of the hospital tonight after being shot in the leg. officer rachel jacobs was wounded after she clashed with a rowdy group of patrons at the galaxy nightclub. the officer was working security detail at the club and reportedly kicked the rowdy group out. they later drove past the entrance in a white honda, according to witnesses, and the driver allegedly fired shots. one of those bullets struck the spar. police have charged 32-year-old kill lee gillis with first- degree attempted murder. a baltimore man is being held without bond tonight on charges of raping a woman at gunpoint, then firing a handgun at two other women who tried to come to her aid. police say 24-year-old andrew

dash brought three young women back to a house in frostburg, maryland, friday night two. of the women got away and managed to call police. officers went to that residence where dash was staying, and that's where they found the third victim and arrested dash. republican presidential candidate mitt romney made a major foreign policy speech in jerusalem to talk about protecting from iran's nuclear threat. >> reporter: worshipers swamped mitt romney's placed a prayer on jerusalem's western wall before his speech. >> it's a deem moving experience to be in jerusalem, the capital of israel. >> reporter: the friendly crowd gave the republican presidential candidate a standing ovation as he declared his support for israel. >> it's nice to hear somebody say without hemming or hawing that they're happy to be in

jerusalem, the capital of israel. >> we recognize israel's right to defend itself and that it is right for america to stand with you. >> reporter: mitt romney gave his speech in front of a crowd of americans living in israel. many of his supporters here say they're looking for a candidate who makes israel a priority. >> having the governor come here today and make such a strong and powerful message of friendship was very meaningful. >> reporter: before sunday's speech obama campaign advisor robert gibbs said the administration's sanctions against iran are having effect. >> our goal, the world's goal is to prevent iran from having a nuclear program, and i think we're making progress on that. but during romney's meetings with israeli leaders, prime minister benjamin netanyahu said diplomacy is not enough. >> we have to be honest and say that diplomacy so far has not

set back the iranian program one iota. >> romney also met with the palestinian prime minister. meantime first lady michelle obama is in london where she is attending the opening ceremonies of the olympics. and today the first lady met with u.s. military families stationed at mildenhal air force base. earlier today she met with u.s. athletes including the men's basketball team and team usa supporters. government tanks and artillery are continuing to pound neighborhoods in syria's largest city in a bid to retake control. the head of the main opposition group is calling for international help in arming the rebels to face the regime's heavy artillery. u.s. defense secretary leon

breaking news in montgomery county where a firefighter is on the scene of a working blaze that started a short time ago in a town house community in montgomery village. no word on what caused that fire. no reports of injuries thus far. bge wants to increase its rates in the state of maryland. if approved most residents would see a 6.1% increase in residential electric bills and a 7.9% increase in residential gas distribution. that means the average electric bill will increase $7.22 per month. the average gas bill will increase by $4.62 per month. if approved, these rates would go into effect in february.

one woman is busy knowing that if the lives of her two children are to improve it's up to her. we didn't go to the convention center last week to interview young. we were there to cover the international aids commission which brought some 25,000 people to d.c. mayor gray was there also to address the gathering. >> i'm not saying anything. >> reporter: young was just doing her job, part of a small army of temporary workers hired to check badges. along the way she began to share her story with us. she lives in a homeless shelter. >> 10-year-old. straight-a student? >> straight-a student, and he's a wide receiver for the berry farms beavers. >> how they got there is

complicated. the husband goes to jail, she's forced to give up her job. eventually there is anny vic shun, then placement at the family shelter. >> we have to share a bathroom with about 80 to maybe 100 other people. we don't have access to cooking, so we have to eat what they give us, and if we don't like what they give us, there's nowhere for us to refrigerate things if we buy them on our own. >> that $13-an-hour job ended with today's conference. >> just got my food handler's license, but nowhere tin district that's going to pay a substantial amount of money is hiring right now, trying to get into the d.c. public schools or a hospital. >> she can't wait for the big solutions. she's got to get a fixed address. >> i've looked through craig list, monster.com. i beat the street with my feet and everything. i need to work. >> we'll try and keep you posted on how she's doing.

if you've got a job for her we'd be glad to pass that information along. in the florida everglades an air boat captain loses his hand to a nine-foot alligator, but now the captain faces charges for feeding that gator. he was giving a tour to a family last month. he hung a fish over the side of the boat. that's when the alligator took the fish and his hand. wildlife officers tracked and euthanized that gait tore. they found the captain's hand butt couldn't be reattached. feeding alligators is a second- degree misdemeanor. apparently the new superman ride at california six flags discovery kingdom has a few kinks to work out. passengers got to the top of the ride this afternoon and that's where they got stuck in the air as the ride stopped. rescue crews had to bring in a crane to get all the riders down. that ride will now be closed. same ride had only been open

devastating storms swept through central new jersey last night. damage was worst in freehold township. today residents surveyed the damage and bonded together to clean up the mess mother nature left behind. >> end of the world last night over here. i cannot believe it. in 17 years that i'm living here, that it is this bad. even when we had the hurricane in august it wasn't this bad. >> it actually was like a tornado just whipping down the street, and then we were hearing crash and boom. >> i saw a giant branch slam in front of me, so i started to go

in reverse, then, boom, the whole car just gets taken out. the way the tree crashed, the door actually bent so i could shimmy out the top. fortunately, nobody injured. >> well, we saw our share of a little taste of that yesterday but nowhere near the brunt of what those folks had to put up with. we are fairly calm tonight. in fact, it's a beautiful evening. we cleared out the clouds from earlier on today, and now we're left with some pretty nice temperatures. in and around the region, outside we're looking at basically a radar that has become a little bit calm, and we really like that it way. this is a three-hour loop. it's not showing too much activity. the sunshine will grate you in the morning if you're getting up, trying to get yourself

moving. doppler 9000 very quiet. you can tell by looking at the view of the capitol the building flags are barely moving. our winds have been light and variable as we head toward the midnight house, and we will continue to see the temperatures slide down from the middle and upper 70s, which is where we're sitting now. we'll see the temperatures go down into the 60s and lower 70s by early sunrise. so for right now we're pretty comfortable. if you have to step out and about it's not too bad as temperatures are sitting in the 70s and sliding back just a few more degrees. satellite and radar is fought going to, at least bringing back rain opportunities for monday and especially for that tuesday forecast. overnight expect areas that are still partly cloudy to become clear by sunrise, and much cooler temperatures, at least those of us outside the beltway will be treated to morning temperatures in the sick an inside the beltway we'll hold

our winds out of the southeast by tomorrow afternoon. that means a part cloudy sky will become partly sunny by later in the day. and as those temperatures bump up to those upper 80s we have the opportunity for a few late- day showers and thunderstorms monday afternoon. temperatures. we'll lag back a little bit to some of those zones. here's how futurecast breaks it down. calm through the morning rush, even through midafternoon. not too bad for the lunch break, but by 1:00 or 2:00 we'll start to see these spotty showers around the region. more likely rain moving in just past the 5:00 and 6:00 hour, should be out of here. then we have some clearing skies as we go into monday night and tuesday. then another system, and that one will have a. things are going to be fairly good for us

for the next couple of days. at least we'll keep our temperatures in the 80s as opposed to the. a few passing clouds by the 6:00 hour. it will be fairly cool for most of us starting out to near 60, sent degrees. late in the afternoon we're looking at highs topping out. tomorrow we'll start out with a code green day because i don't think the showers and storms are going to be too hefty for us. as the larger system comes our way on tuesday, a little bit more widespread so we've gone with a yellow code alert there. by wednesday back into the lower 90s bringing in southeast winds and bringing back that humidity. so in all the seven-day forecast we'll stay calm for the. so by wednesday and thursday, especially towards the end of the week, we'll start to move on back into the early 90s. at least we will stay dry on
