left 12 people dead. ed lawrence now has the latest from centennial, colorado. >> reporter: james holmes is being officially charged with murder be 12 people and injuring 58 others in a shooting rampage during a midnight showing of the new batman movie. during his first court appearance july 23rd, holmes remained silent. some people in the courtroom described him as dazed. legal analysts say holmes's lawyers are likely planning on an insanity defense. >> this is going a case where the focus will be on his mental state during this process in terms of when he is competent to even go through this process now. >> reporter: lawyers are also arguing over a defense motion to find out who leaked information about a packet holmes allegedly sent to a psychiatrist in the university of colorado denver. prosecutors said reports were inaccurate. the defense wants anything holmes sent to his doctor to be blocked from evidence.

eleven survivors remain in the hospital, four in critical condition. edward lawrence, centennial, colorado. and under colorado law holmes will not face additional charges for causing a pregnant woman to have a miscarriage following that attack. in the wake of the colorado shooting, some hospitals are canceling visits from a good samaritan who dresses up at batman. lenny robertson had just picked up a $200,000 bat mobile from canada. children hospitals in st. louis and chicago have canceled his visits, however other hospitals are still welcoming him. a kent state student is due in court today for allegedly posting a message on twitter saying he was planning to quote shoot up the campus. 19-year-old william ca bern na was arrested at his parents' home yesterday. he has been charged with

inducing panic, also a felony and aggravated menacing. he could be kicked out of kent state. meanwhile in our area a man accused of plotting a workplace attack is undergoing an emergency psychiatric evaluation. neil prescott of maryland was taken into custody last week. he was in the process of being fired from his job. police say he told a supervisor that he was quote going to blow everybody up. a cache of weapons were found inside his home. prescott has not yet been charged. dc police want to know who shot two women on u street this weekend. they were both hit early saturday morning on u street, near 12th street northwest. one woman was grazed on the neck and ear, the other woman was shot in the chin. council member jim grant says he doesn't know if the women were targeted or if they were hit by stray bullets. >> they are unrelated females,

they weren't together, they are not friends, they didn't know each other. so it looks as though the target was somewhere else and this was pretty random. >> a week ago, two other women were shot, both hit in the leg. they were in the cross fire of a fight between two groups of men. and police say two teenagers connected to a murder will be charged as adults. 16-year-old andre adway and 17-year-old james murray admit to be involved in the murder of 50-year-old david krupski. the capital area food bank is opening a new multi-million dollar distribution center that is the size of two football fields. the 123,000 square foot facility is located in the 4900 block of puerto rico avenue northeast.

records and bringing home gold. >> go usa. number one. >> reporter: but there have been disappointments, american gold medal favorite jordan webber left the area in tears after failing to qualify. olympic organizers are being criticized for letting hundreds of stadium seats sit empty. >> by all means, let us in. >> reporter: british officials even drafted in soldiers to fill the gap. they say the tickets were mostly for olympic officials and athlete's family and friends who only stay for a short time. >> the tickets will be available for popular events. but these will only be sold online and only to british residents. >> we have been waiting outside asking for people for tickets if they have extras and haven't been able to buy any. >> reporter: the american swimmers still draw big crowds. but the french took revenge on the u.s. men's relay team, giving michael phelps his first

government forces say they have recaptured a district of syria's largest city. and the claim comes amid heavy fighting against rebels and the country's largest -- in the country's largest city. government troops are backed by helicopter gun ships in the city of 2.5 million people. the rebels deny that forces loyal to president assad have pushed them from their positions. turkey is beefing up its security along its border with syria. a convoy of tanks was sent to

the region. once an ally, the prime minister of turkey is now among president assad's fiercest critics. meanwhile in this country, authorities are looking for the person who is phoning in bomb threats to wal-mart stores in the midwest. eight of the stores in mow portfolio, -- in missouri, three from kansas have received bomb threats recently. in each case, the caller says that explosive devices are on the premises. in one case, a store was told that many people would die. a search of the wal-mart failed to turn up anything suspicious. police in missouri are now saying that they have the number of phone calls made and they hope to have an arrest very soon. an average of 200,000 people are victims of rape or sexual

assaults each year. the dc rape crisis center provides an important service to help people recover from that traumatic attack. and today, on hero central, i'm saluting the dc rape crisis center. >> i was sexually assaulted and robbed on september 30, 1997. >> 15 years ago byron was taken into the woods at knifepoint, robbed of $4 and sexually assaulted by a stranger. >> i have problems talking to anyone about it even though my family, close friends and colleagues at work would try to help, it wasn't something i was comfortable talking about. >> reporter: when byron was at the hospital she learned about the dc rape crisis center and she called their hotline. >> i would just cry. i didn't know what to say. so that person just was there on the line. >> reporter: after a month of phone counseling, she was well enough to return to work.

>> i know the center saved my life. i didn't know there was a way to be able to live again. >> reporter: denise snyder, the executive director, says survivors of sexual violence need to know that they are not alone, and it is not their fault. >> our services help restore a sense of self-confidence, and the ability to feel like they can go on and take the next step. not just be a victim but to become a survivor and thriver in life. >> the dc rape crisis center provides in-house counseling and therapy, for free. >> you can find really good people who care about you, and not be concerned about who you are, what you do, how much you make. they genuinely care about you. that ignited something in me, in finding different ways to be able to give back to the community. >> today byron is on the board of directors of the dc rape crisis center.

and i approve this message. a dozen riders were stranded on top of a stalled roller coaster in california this weekend. they were stuck for nearly two hours at the six flags discovery kingdom in california.

the superman ultimate flight roller coaster actually just opened last month. a theme park crane, equipped with a large bucket was dispatched to help the riders down. no one was injured, and the ride is closed today. >> how cool is that, the man of steel flew in and rescued that from that roller coaster. that is what they needed. >> i would have been scared to death. >> i would have been scared to death if it was working properly, let alone failing. >> reporter: a couple of showers here and there. a few sprinkles out on the weather terrace. i'm going to show you doppler in just a second. i would take my umbrella with me, but most of us are not going to need them. the shower threat is going to be in the forecast in the next several days. here's a look at the day planner for this afternoon. while they don't have any raindrops on there, i have to tell you there are isolated showers here and there. you may even hear a rumble of

thunder on one of these as temperatures climb into the upper 80s today. we might tickle 90. we have enough sunshine. east to southeast keeping enough low level moisture around .10, 11 miles per hour by 9:00, 81. i think we will be staying in the low, maybe mid-70s in town and by the bay, upper 60s. you can see from our doppler loop, the moisture has been coming on more from the bay. the showers that popped in the bay, they are working their way inland right now. as we zoom in we'll show you heavier ones we have going on. scattered here south of nolan and right on st. mary's county and the bay, looks like it was traveling toward swann point. you have to watch out for that. in town one little shower popped here, this thing is drifting up toward bethesda moving northwest. toward the american legion

bridge area. trying to come up route 32. then out to the west, had showers also here, not moving much, here's shenandoah trying to lift to the northwest. maybe south of new market across i 81, a couple of light sprinkles, this stuff is few and far between. you may be lucky or unlucky, depending on your perspective. temperatures are in the low to mid-80s. 86. again 89 is the high today right about where we should be for this time of year. 80 to annapolis in this hour. a sticky 85 in cambridge and fredericksburg and holding onto the 70s in cumberland at this hour. we have seen more clouds than sunshine. that is the case in our michael and son weather camera. partly to mostly cloudy skies out there, 86 but it feels like 9. still kind of sticky with the humidity of 55%. officially cloudy skies being reported at reagan national.

we are lucky, you think it is warm and sticky here. could be in oklahoma, arkansas today. oklahoma city 107. little rock expecting a high around 110. looks like for oklahoma, only going to get hotter tomorrow and wednesday. wednesday they could be up pardon 110. very -v are hot air with this ridge of high pressure still over the central part of the country. it was over places like kansas city and st. louis, kind of drifted south. they are expecting more 100-degree heat over the next few days. a couple of showers here and there, looks like maybe a better chance for a few storms in the mountains of west virginia. we'll go throughton, an isolated shower, skies becoming mostly cloudy. tomorrow we have a better chance of showers and storms here, at noon in the mountains out to the west, can't rule out an isolated one near here. wednesday i think the shower and thunderstorm chance, wednesday morning, becomes a little bit more widespread as we head into the midday and afternoon wednesday on wednesday. you think about the green and the yellow sort of the days,
