department cannot assign more officers to protect the corridor, then private businesses should start hiring offduty cops to do the job. that after four women were hit by stray bullets. most recently, right near 11th street. here is bruce johnson. >> the district's corridor has become a major tourist and entertainment attraction. early saturday morning, two women suffered nonlife threatening injuries when they were shot near 12th and u. innocent victims hit by somebody's stray bullets. >> you have to be concerned not only for the welfare of the people that it happened to, but for the reputation of u street. >> contacted one of the women injured here on u street. she declined to do an interview, but she worked with nbc. she says she is going to be okay. that second woman, according to a published online report, works for the washington post. a week ago saturday, at 11th and u, two groups of men were arguing, gun shots erupted and

two more women were hit, both of them in the leg. they will recover, say police. three men were arrested after a gun was thrown from a car. >> we require more police officers than i think sometimes we get from mpd. so all over the city, areas like this are using the cost reimbursable program. >> d.c. councilman says if police want to sign more officers to u street, then private businesses should hire their own offduty d.c. police. there is city money that would pay for half the cost of bars and nightclubs. >> our business contributes lots of taxes to the district. >> the owner of this 7-eleven says she can't afford to hire offduty police officers. she can't get the same subsidy offered to bars and restaurants. >> we hire anywhere from 10 to 15 employees, somebody is probably going to go. >> six years ago, february 2006, damon ward, a local architect was hit by a stray

bullet and killed. he was stepping out of a nightclub. he was hit by a bullet that came from a group of people that had been arguing over a parking space. >> my son was an innocent bystander. he did nothing. he was not a part of it at all. and that could be anybody. >> bruce johnson, 9news now. >> to arlington where they are working with the police to try and identify a man who shot and killed a jewelry shop owner late friday night. his name was tommy wong. he was right inside the capital jewelers along columbia pike. the cameras give us a good photo. there are similarities to a jeweler along f street in d.c. last month. ocean city is a popular get away destination this time of year, but police have a warning for women who were there looking to leave their troubles behind. the same man may be responsible for several sexual assaults in

poorly lit areas outside of bars. the most recent attack, saturday night, when a man struck up a conversation with her on her way out of the bar and forced her to the ground and tried to assault her. >> three attempted assaults that happened in the past month. >> police say not to walk alone and don't drink too much and travel in places with lots of other people. if you have any information, the police want to hear from you. >> and if you have not heard the word, sequestration yet, you need to. it is meant looming cuts. as peggy fox tells us, those cuts will happen if congress doesn't act. >> it was never really meant to be a policy. it was meant to be a hammer. >> virginia governor kept his speech nonpartisan, so the looming sequestration cuts are

the result of congressional republicans and democrats unable to compromise. >> this is a pathetic way to legislate. to have this hang over everybody's head and lead people to a decision. it's just unbelievable. >> i'm here because we are concerned about jobs in our industry. more so we are concerned about the security of our nation. >> a year ago, congress passed a threatening measure. it was meant to put pressure on the super committee to come up with a plan. the super committee failed and those cuts are coming january 2 if congress doesn't act. >> as long as the other sides put revenue on the table, then we'll have a balance of spending cuts and revenue and this problem will evaporate. >> because of the high number of federal jobs and defense contractors, the washington area would be hit hard and could lose 161,000 jobs, according to economist, steven fuller. >> when you start cutting back federal spending, if the cuts come here proportional to what

we get now, 21% of all of the cuts will come out of our economy. >> even though the sequestration cuts don't take effect until january 2, there are reprecushions. they are required by law to notify their employees working on federal projects. if they plan to lay them off, some 60 days in advance. so those notices may be going out soon in the next few months. if congress doesn't act. peggy fox, 9news now. >> the state of virginia did end the 2012 fiscal year with $129 million than they expected. rick brown tells the associated pres, revenues were up 5.4% and 55 million of that surplus came from sales tax collections. 33.5 from individual withholding and 32 million from corporate income tax. virginia may not be finished boosting its bottom line. the senator is planning to introduce the bill that would

typically we like to issue commuter alerts about things that make your life more difficult. tonight, one that will make it easier. a new ramp opened today from southbound i-295 to the 11th street bridge in d.c. this new bridge is expected to ease the rush hour traffic coming into town. a 51-year-old man was killed yesterday afternoon in new york. doug schneiderman was killed when a pickup truck crossed the center line and hit his car head on. his wife and his 16-year-old daughter, rachel, were also seriously hurt. so far, no charges have been filed. branches of the american civil liberties union want to

know about how police are using the automatic license plate readers. they sent requests to state police and individual counties today asking what happens to the data those readers collect. maryland has 320 of those readers in use. it is unclear how many are being used in virginia. requests were sent to state police and 15 local police or sheriff departments. still to come, topper is back with a check on your forecast. up next, those chilean miners are making a move to make money off that tough experience. we'll tell you how. ♪

can you believe it? sunday marks two years since the accident that trapped those 33 chile an miners. now they are looking to capitalize. the rescue workers registered a trademark on the miracle 33, and they will start selling mugs, t-shirts, and commemorative medals. that will happen at airports across chile. everything is not gold and glorious. organizers are being strongly criticized for letting hundreds of seats remain empty inside olympic stadiums. >> we have been waiting outside, we have not been able to buy any.

in the mail bag tonight, chick-fil-a. reaction to the company president stated opposition to gay marriage had gone over the top. especially when you saw big city mayors timing in, suggests the restaurants would no longer be welcome. but drew says it is not about the comments or even the beliefs of the company president. the issue is that the company itself made millions of dollars in donation to antigay organizations. the company that made the donations and not the
