moving well heading for the beltway. we'll be wac with more traffic coming up at 6:12. thank you monika. just behind me the words sequestration do you know how to spell it and do you know what it means? you really should know about it. the looming federal budget cuts could have a severe impact on the region. >> it could cost more than 150,000 jobs just around the beltway. delia goncalves is live on capitol hill this morning with a closer look at the debate. >> reporter: good morning mike. another potential total job loss around the country? 2million. that is, if congress doesn't act in time. the cuts were never meant to happen we're told. congress passed them simply to force a supercommittee to balance a budget shortfall but that supercommittee failed to do so. now, the only way the country can avoid these widespread and

damaging $2.1 trillion in federal cuts is if congress steps in with a new plan by january. >> national parks would have to close. would there be any people to fight forest fires and stamp your passport at dulles when you flew in from a foreign county? >> it doubles the cults in the mail tear -- cuts in the military and obviously add another 100,000 that would have reduced and the impact of that on top of the reductions that are currently going to take place would -- would place a huge burden on the systems to be able to respond to that. >> reporter: and in that vein some say the country -- congress rather put the country in millions of jobs at risk. we'll are more on that coming -- have more on that coming up at 6:30 and plus a possible rescue effort. mike? >> thanks delia. a congressional report is blaming now five atf officials

for that botched fast and furious gunrunnerring operation. the draft report from republicans also says plenty of people in the government share the blame as well. many of the guns ended up being used in crimes in the united states and mexico. the house found attorney general eric tolder in contempt for failing to turn over enough documents on that operation. violent night in the district leaves one person dead and three others wounded. there were three separate shootings across the city. two of the people wounded are children. the deadly shooting happened just before midnight along brook street at 47th street northeast. that's right by the kelly miller middle school. so far the killer has not been found. a new lead in the murder of an arlington jewelry store owner tommy wong was shot and killed during a robbery friday at capital jewelers. now a northwest d.c. jeweler says he may have been robbed by

the same suspect. ken stein believes the man caught in surveillance video friday is the same person who robbed him in june. d.c. and arlington police are teaming up to figure out if the crimes are linked. well, we've talked about the budget woes in maryland. not the case in virginia. for the third straight year the state is boasting is budget sufficient plus. the commonwealth ended the 2012 fiscal year $129 million in the black. sales tax revenue $55 million more than expected. income tax revenue $33 million ahead of expectations. so again virginia in the black third straight year. one virginia lawmaker wants to bring slot someone to the commonwealth. democrat louise lucas is going to bring up a bill next year to allow gaming in the states. only allow casinos in place where is 40% of the land is exempt from property taxes. only two virginia cities fit that bill. that would be lexington and portsmouth. coming up on 6:06 and jessica doyle is watching your

money and your mailbox. >> and another doomsday line for the post office. >> that's right. tomorrow is d day. d. as in default. unless something is done by congress before august 1st, the postal service will default on a $5.5 billion payment to the government. that money covers retiree health benefits. this will be the first default in the post office's history. the postal service wantings to cut a day of o mail delivery and fire thousands of employees and slash service hours to make ends meet. the postal service union thinks that's going too far. >> got to be some closings and consolidation. that's modernization. it doesn't immediate to be as draconian and as quickly done as what is necessary right now. >> the postal service warns congress if nothing is done, it will be completely out of money by october of 2013. members of congress are blasting for profit private colleges. the senate committee has been

tracking the industry. get these findings. the u.s. taxpayers spend $32 billion last year on for profit rather private colleges. even though they have a high dropout rate and price tag. in the 2008/2009 school year, 54% of for profit students dropped out without a degree. >> wow. >> that translates to more than a half a million students. bachelor's programs at for profits cost 20% more than public schools. associate's degrees at for profit institutions four times the cost. and these for profit institutions also drawing fire because their marketing expenses and their rekristen stewarting expenses -- recruiting expenses that's higher than what they actually spend on education. >> but they're dropping out why? >> because they're not getting the education that i guess they're going into where they're accepting students that -- >> aren't really qualified. >> so wow. thanks jess. >> sure thing, big problem. >> it is. our time is 6:07 and five

skies here in northwest d.c. with 75 degrees. that dew point's at 70 so a very tropical feel to the air with the relative humidity at # 4% and sticky air is going to be and. high heat, really high heat. yesterday, little rock, arkansas hit 111. that's the third highest record ever. today they'll be in the same neighborhood. oklahoma city 109 and they're going to be up around 110 the next several days there with 100s back to kansas city and st. louis but that's impressive with the ridge down here. storms up and over that. got another line of storms not just here in kansas but up through the midwest coming through chicago and north wednesday. still have report of -- bend. still have reports of ping-pong ball sized hail around indiana this morning. some of that on the heels of the easterly winds. some of this moisture comes in. it's one reason we're not as hot as we have been but also into the middle of the day and the afternoon we get the spotty afternoon showers and

and here's another staggering number. 2million jobs nationwide are at risk if these $2.1 trillion sequestration cuts pass. also on the chopping block federal services that could clouds. national parks and museums and even clip it will military. that's according to -- cripple the military. that's according to defense secretary leon panetta. however, here's the thing. the cuts were never meant to happen. it was simply part of a plan by congress to force a supercommittee to balance the budget but that committee failed and now, it seems the plan has backfired. >> this is a pathetic way to legislate. to have this sword hanging over everybody's head and that's supposed to lead people to a decision. it's just unbelievable that we're facing this this late in the year for something that starts early next year. >> we voted for it to avoid an economic shotdown. now we -- shutdown. now we face it but here's the good news. with the president's leadership

richmond. four people died that day. court records show the driver fell asleep at the wheel. he'll be going on trial in november. a man arrested and accused of growing marijuana at his home says he did it for medicinal purposes. however police say that's not the case. anne arundel county police found $50,000 worth of pot plants and guns at the home on monday. charles vincent dominic is facing a vote of charges but he has i -- variety of charges but says he wasn't going to sell any of the drugs. >> plants were between four and five six feel. a large amount of marijuana. too much for a single consumption by one individual. >> the home where police say they were found is within 1,000 feet of arun dell high school and that puts it in a special enforcement section by police. police in frederick, maryland are cracking down on pan handing now. they say that i have arrested two men in the down teixeira --
