there's no doubt in my mind, we'll highlight some of the areas. i have been out there before. so, you have some pretty good hail and certainly the red that you see, okay. this is the hail. i call it majenta. this is the heavy rain and you get into the yellow, lesser rain. so we're looking at some pretty big storms. they are popup variety. any storm that develops can be hefty. also saying good-bye to these storms as they move out of frederick county up into north eastern maryland. but this is the storm we're going to be watching for the next little bit. some good news. some rain is trying to move into the northern neck. we also have good rains back into cumberland as well. the storms, they have lightning. if you hear thunder, you need to get indoors, you know the routine. put your umbrellas down. we are looking at a lot of lightning and really storming a lot in the mountains. so still some pretty good storms between mohr beguntown

and cumberland and down toward tucker and morgan county and west virginia. and this is the lightning. it's showing up in fairfax. another good reason that the skins brought their practice indoors. we'll put this back into motion. it's going to cross over 50 and head toward eastern fairfax county. the good news is, it will weaken and track that storm with you. back to you. >> thank you, top. >> a s.w.a.t. team burst through the door of a calvert county house and they were literally shocked by what they found. inside that home on candle light court, they found a man, his wife, and their two-year- old daughter dead and a 12-year- old boy with his neck slashed and burned. scott broom is live with more on this one. scott. >> reporter: well, earlier today, calvert county sheriff did confirm this as just a horrible, murder suicide and arson. among the victims, the man's two-year-old daughter and a 12-

year-old boy miracle survivor fighting for his life tonight. both of them attacked by their own father. this is the family destroyed in an unexplainable spasm of family violence. they are seen in a facebook photo confirmed by neighbors. cynthia and her two-year-old daughter murdered. son, 12-year-old frank hayward, iii, rescued but slashed at the neck and suffered burns. frank hayward who killed himself after lighting fires inside the house at about 8:30 this morning. a calvert county s.w.a.t. team broke down the door after getting a 911 call from an adult relative who fled the house about 8:30 a.m. calvert county sheriff, mike evans. >> it's horrible. i have seen a few in my s.w.a.t. team days and these are the worse case scenarios. there was nothing else we could have done. we were very fortunate to save frank hayward, iii. >> frank hayward, iii, is in

critical condition at washington children's hospital. investigators recovered handguns, but are not sure how everyone died. how the fires were lit or what set hayward off. neighbors are in shock. >> devastating. you have a problem, let life live. but to do this and take a two- year-old's life and try to kill everybody is ridiculous. it makes no sense. >> investigators are not speculating tonight on what may have set off frank hayward to slaughter his own family. one neighbor who traded e-mails recently suggested there might have been some stress about the house on the market, perhaps headed into foreclosure. perhaps marital problems. the sheriff said there had been a call to this residence recently to check on the welfare of the family. but everything checked out okay and no protective orders in this case. a terrible tragedy in calvert county. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> we may never understand

what happened. thank you. the word of a settlement tonight for a family whose son was injured on a popular frederick county attraction. his name was christian. he was only eight years old when he was impaled by a splinter on a slide. the 8 by 12-inch sliver of wood went into his lower abdomen after he was going down the slide. claiming he should have known. new information about those mandatory defense cuts that could cost our region hundreds of thousands of jobs. last night, we took you to a protest against the plan. today, a senate panel approved a $604 billion defense spending bill that would reverse the cuts the pentagon plans within the air force. no word when that measure may go before the full senate. >> we are standing by for lawmakers on capitol hill to vote on the controversial

abortion bill. it would ban abortions in the district of columbia after 20 weeks of pregnancy. and as tara reports, opponents say it's an attempt to roll back women's constitutional rights. >> the full house is considering a bill targeting abortions in washington, d.c. the legislation would make all abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy illegal in the nation's capital. arizona republican congressman, trent franks, is sponsoring the bill with support from antiabortion rights groups. >> at least by 20 weeks, the unborn child is capable of feeling pain and that states upon substantial and well founded medical evidence. >> proabortion rights groups say there is no medical evidence to support that claim. d.c. congresswoman, eleanor holmes norton sees the bill as a direct challenge. >> it's an attack on what the supreme court has said. >> the vote is putting lawmakers on the record on abortion just before an

election. pro and antiabortion rights groups are keeping score. >> it's important for the congress to vote on this bill and get a strong majority in support of reversing the current policy in our nation's capital. >> constitution gives congress the authority to govern what happens in d.c. but holmes norton says there are national implications. >> they will come for you next. they are aiming for you at the national campaign. >> in a 2007 study, the center for disease control reported no abortions were performed in washington, d.c. after 20 weeks despite it being legal. kara for cbs news, washington. >> abortion bill needs a 2/3 ma jurorty and. >> another vote of confidence for plans to build a streetcar along columbia pike. the supervisors approved the plan as its preferred option. last week, arlington county threw his support behind the

plan. and service would run between pentagon city and the cross roads. but owners are scaling back the plans for a casino at the rocky gap lodge and golf resort. the president of the resort told the state that slot machines, or i should say, this organization told the state's slot machine commission that it can't find the financing for the $65 million project. so instead of the 850 slot machines, it will have just 500. so you need a campaign 2012 running mate? apparently there's an app for that. mitt romney's campaign announced the republican candidate will announce his running mate through a new iphone and android application. it could be a key resource in some battleground states. and president obama is taking his campaign to leesburg this week. he'll hold one campaign event after flying into dulles from florida. >> and coming up, the chick-

the tour bus crash that killed four people in virginia last year was caused by a driver fatigue. that is the conclusion of the national transportation safety board investing the accident on i-95 about 30 miles north of richmond. investigators say the low fare bus company sky express had no regard for passenger safety. we also have a head's up for commuters who use nebraska avenue. the d.c. department of transportation enters the next phase of its reconstruction project. so what that means is that jersey barriers along military road will be shifted to create a new traffic pattern. look out for that. would you pay a penny more in sales tax to make your commute easier? that's the question for atlanta voters waiting in traffic like this tonight. no fun. they are voting on the gridlock tax to fund some transportation projects. supporters say the money will add jobs, ease congestion, and

a food bank the size of two football fields open today in northeast washington. it is the new home of the capital area food bank. the largest food bank in the d.c. area. it took seven years and $40 million to build. it is more than doubled the size of the old warehouse, which means the food bank will be able to distribute even more food than the 33 million-pounds it dished out last year. >> the issue with the new

amazing building that the community built is the fact that we'll be able to double and triple the amount of food that we put out. we'll be able to increase our programs in terms of our nutrition education programs. >> got the space, but now they need food to fill the shelves and volunteers to sort through it. if you want to help, we'll show you how on wusa9.com. getting new perspective of that massive dust storm that hit phoenix over the weekend. this was the time lapse as it blew into the area. it followed an afternoon of heavy rains. these storms are common in the southwest during monsoon season. because they create a mix of wind, dust, and rain. not nice at all. now we get our own share of extreme weather. it seemed like it lately, but can we link it to climate change or global warming? >> an environmental group in virginia says it is crunch the numbers to prove there is a link.

>> extreme precipitation weather, like downpours and big storms. including snow megeddon from 2010 are happening more often. according to a report. >> in the past six years, we are 33% more likely to see severe precipitation than we were at the beginning of that period. what that means, a storm that happened every 12 months now happens every 9 months on average. >> laura kate anderson, a field organizer for the environmental group says such extreme weather events are also getting bigger. >> scientific consensus is that global warming is contributing to the increased precipitation. >> head scientist of the national climatic data center says you can link global warming to the increased frequency of extreme precipitation. in fact, a federally funded study concluded the global temperature has increased over the past 50 years and that is due primarily to human induced

emissions of heat trapping gases. >> not all extreme events are going to become more frequent. for example, cold waves are going to become lesser frequent. and we're seeing that already. >> environment virginia hopes the study will encourage the obama administration to pass legislation that has stricter fuel efficiency standards and reduces carbon pollution for a new power plant. in leesburg, virginia, anny hong, 9news now. >> any warrants that the data goes back 60 years. the data used for this report and that is what other experts say, we have to be careful about. in fact, those who challenge global warming, including a former staff member of the u.s. senate argue that other studies have found that both temperature and precipitation were higher a thousand years ago during the mid evil warm period. so i guess we need to keep this all in perspective. >> climate has changed and it will continue to change. it did before we were here and

will after we are gone. it has been changing for billions of years. it's a small statistical sample. you would not accept that. >> i'm not going to weigh into the weather controversy. >> we are looking at one thunderstorm that prompted a severe thunderstorm warning for fairfax county. it has hail out toward the dulles toll road. let's look at live doppler 9,000. we are looking at the warning until 6:30. another 12 minutes or so. some storms off to the north. they have moved out of frederick county. still some good activity out in the mountains. i wouldn't be surprised to see flooding out here. pretty good storm from garrett county, dropping down into morgan county and west virginia. southwest of cumberland. but this is a storm that prompted the warning. it's not quite as hefty as it was. you can see the purple there. that is hail. so right around reston, it is just now across the dulles toll road. so now it is headed toward reston with hail and certainly

heavy rains. again, that red, that's rain fall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour. where will this storm go. it will drift off to the north and east. and then head across the river, but it will weaken a little bit as it moves off to the north and east. still, severe thunderstorm warning in fairfax until 6:30. right now, live look outside. it is our live weather cam brought to you by michael and son. dew point 67. pressure down just a little bit. 29.89 inches of mercury and winds out of the south. temperatures, it's rain cooled in gaithersburg and rockville. they are in the mid 70s. mid 80s downtown. no storms down to the south right now, but look back to the west, cooler in great falls, 80, and cooler in reston. 78 because of that storm. so we are looking at afternoon storms. kind of a pattern we will continue all week. isolated storms tonight, almost hot tomorrow. i think the commute will be dry tomorrow morning. more storms possible wednesday. a couple storms could sneak in late in the morning on

wednesday, but after the commute. tonight, isolated early thunderstorms, a few heavy. otherwise partly cloudy and mild. and by morning, partly cloudy and warm. a late shower or storm possible. 70s and 80s. by afternoon, better chance for showers and storms. some heavy, high temperatures near 90. next three days, we're going to keep it code yellow across the board wednesday, thursday, and friday. 89 on wednesday. hot with storms on thursday. hot with storms on friday as well. next seven days, it stays hot over the weekend. mid 90s on saturday and sunday. cold front approaches on monday. some showers and storms possible. not much cooler behind the front, temperatures on tuesday will still tickle. >> tickle. 90. oh, he says it like it is pleasant. >> the redskins brought that tough training indoors today, right kristen? >> had to, right kristen? >> that's right. it got nasty out here, guys. we were trying to show you the rainbow that just popped up, but unfortunately, it's not

we are live at redskins park in ashburn. day five of training camp and all eyes were on the offensive line today. they just can't seem to rid themselves of the injury bug with two more players gone, this has once again become one of the biggest question marks heading into the season. this o-line gave up 41 sacks last season. not good numbers when it means for protecting the face of the franchise. two starters out, the skins are doing an o-line shuffle, we got to see that today before the weather pushed everything inside into the practice bubble. now the backups, they have a lot of work ahead of them. but rg3 says he's not worried. >> one thing i don't want those guys to think is that i don't trust him. i trust my offensive line. >> those guys are quality guys. they are great. obviously last year, we beat the giants and we know what the giants did. we are more than capable of beating anybody, really. >> now of course the other area that has some question

marks around it that needs some work is the defensive secondary. they only had ten interceptions last year and really kind of fell apart usually in the fourth quarter. of course a little bit having to do with a poor offense, keeping them out there longer than they have to. with two new safeties, plus the new coach. the guys feel like they are already better this year. >> with this group of guys, we might look bad on paper, you know, and guys might rank bad, but at the end of the day, you have to go out and play and we are ready to go. we feel poised and capable with the guys we have. we are going to make a lot of plays. >> and once again, we saw the linebacker runningback blocking drills, something to prepare them for game time. for the most part, the linebackers had their way with the runningback. but there were a few that held their own. it was good for the crowd to see that. all right, spoiler alert.
