the attacker, his own father who killed himself after lighting fires inside the house at about 8:30 this morning. a calvert county s.w.a.t. team broke down the door after getting a 911 call from an adult relative who fled the house about 8:30 a.m. calvert county sheriff, mark evans. >> i have seen a few and these are the worst case scenarios. you want to do something to help. there was nothing else we could have done. >> frank hayward, iii, is in critical condition at the children's hospital. investigators have recovered handgun, but are not sure how everyone died. how the fires were lit, or what set hayward off. neighbors are in shock. >> devastating. you have a problem, move on in your life and let life live. to do this and take a two-year- old's life and try to kill everybody is ridiculous. makes no sense. >> sheriff evans says

handguns were recovered that may have been used in this incident. he has no idea and won't speculate on what may have set off frank hayward to cause him to slaughter his own family. scott broom, 9news now. >> now an update on the kidnapping of cal ripken's mother. police released surveillance video of the suspect. it shows the man entering what looks like a wal-mart. he's the fellow who has on the orange cap and a light colored coat. this is the man who grabbed violet ripken from her garage last tuesday. they say he tied her up, put her in the back of the car, and then let her go. so far, police don't know why he did that. >> this thursday marks one year since robyn gardner disappeared in aruba. the 35-year-old was last seen vacationing on the island with a fellow by the name of gary giordano. he was held for months in an aruban jail. they didn't have any evidence, they let him go.

gardner's sister spoke with andrea mccarren for the first time. >> robyn gardner's family is convinced she is still alive and wants the fbi and arue aruban authorities to continue their investigation. >> we want to keep hope out there and waiting for her when she comes home. >> that's the sister of 35- year-old robyn gardner. mising in aruba. >> had you heard the name before? >> never. >> danielle colton wouldn't comment any further on the man who reported robyn missing. nor would she address her efforts to claim a $3.5 million life insurance policy purchased before last summer's trip. >> sometimes you go to public places and you see a woman out there, a beautiful young woman with long blond hair and it brings up all the memories of robyn. >> robyn's sister is haunted by the disappearance and hopes to travel to aruba some day and try to make sense of the

antiabortion groups. but d.c. leaders say it's an attack on the home rules. >> it's an attack on what the supreme court said. >> at least by 20 week, the unborn child is capable of feeling pain and that is based upon substantial and well founded medical evidence. >> well this bill is going to have a tough road. about 2/3 majority is needed to vote for it and even if that were to happen, it would likely die in the senate where it is controlled by democrats. >> a federal judge says for third party candidates is unconstitutional. now that law requires those parties to submit at least 10 thoarks voter 10,000 voter signatures. the judge ruled that violates political party's freedom of speech. so far, the state has not commented on the ruling. >> national transportation safety board says last year's deadly bus crash in virginia was caused by failures on three

levels. the driver, the bus company, and federal regulators. the safety board released findings on the crash today and says the driver had limited opportunities for sleep and was severely fatigued when that bus flipped over. the ntsb found the bus company, sky express, did not have adequate safety policies in place and it also pointed to a lack of government oversight and that allowed the bus company to still operate despite numerous violations a boy injured settled a lawsuit with the owner of said attraction. the lutheran and united church agreed to pay christian's family $60,000. back in 2010, griffith was impaled by an 8 to 12-inch long splinter while he was riding down the church's big wooden slide face first. the family sued for damaging, saying the church should have known it was dangerous. >> the deadline is here for maryland utilities to submit

their storm reports about last month's storm and their reaction to it. and pepco filed a 69 page report defending its response to the storm. the utility says it had little advance notice of that storm that knocked out power to half a million customers. nonetheless responded quickly, bringing on nearly 2,000 field crews and that restored power to 99% of people within a week. but one montgomery county politician says after a week long outage, the utility is in denial. >> everyone knows that we have a huge problem. we have one of the least reliable utilities in the country. but pepco's management is in denial. >> they will have the final say on just how well pepco did or did not do and they'll hold hearings with all of the state's public utilities in september. last year, if you'll remember, the commission signed the utility a million bucks for poor performance. once again, we have warnings rolling in. topper has that yellow weather alert. who is in the bulls eye now?

>> fauquier county. let's get right to live doppler 9000. this storm popped up in the last 30 minutes. this is fauquier county right here and this is culpeper. the storm it is moving off to the north and to the east. we'll zoom in. good deal of hail with this storm. it's right on the border. right around jefferson and this is hail. you see the pinkish, purplish there? that is definitely hail. in fact, we'll pinpoint some of the neighborhoods because this has been growing in intensity in the last little bit. we're looking at hail. this is springs road. okay. and this is chattum court. so right in that vicinity, you have some hail and the storms moving off to the north and to the east at not a very good clip, unfortunately. it's only moving off at 17 miles per hour. hail about an inch and a quarter. about quarter sized hail for the area right around spring street and jefferson. right on the border of fauquier

county and culpeper county. in terms of lightning, the storms out in the mountains, they have been with it all day. there are no flood warnings right now. we have more storms out to the south with lightning as well and this is the storm pushing through culpeper headed into fauquier county. there's another storm behind that further south and some storms trying to get into southern maryland, which is good, because you guys need rain in southern maryland as well. we'll come back and track these for you live and tell you if we'll be doing this all over again tomorrow. >> coming our way from soda to breast milk, new york mayor michael bloomberg weighs in the controversy. wants to tell you what to do. but first, the governor weighs in on the chick-fil-a controversy and defends the restaurant against the other politicians that aren't pleased with him. we'll have his comments coming up next. mcdonnell, has become the latest politician to weigh in on the chick-fil-a same sex controversy. that fast food chain has been facing backlash and protests after the ceo voiced his opposition to same-sex marriage. some mayors declared the restaurant as no longer welcome in their cities. this is how governor mcdonnell responded about the mess today on wtop. >> i love chicken. i think people have an ability to start a business and grow a business regardless of their political beliefs or religious beliefs. so i think making this connection is a very troubling thing for us. >> well, d.c. mayor apparently doesn't agree. he no longer supports the restaurant and expanding its presence in the city. supporters of the chain are staging counterprotests tomorrow, with chick-fil-a appreciation day. more storms coming our way, but this could be the beginning. topper has a few stormy days on

will lock up formula and no longer give free samples. >> everyone knows breast milk is best, but new york city's mayor is taking that slogan a big step forward. >> most of public health officials think this is a great idea. >> his new program, latch on nyc will do much more than encourage breast-feeding. it will make formula feeding newborns in a hospital a little tougher. hospitals that sign on will provide formula for medical reasons only. they will keep track of the number of bottles used by moms and they will stop handing out free formula. nikki, a million of two, who is expecting her third is a northern virginia lactation consultant. she says it is about time hospitals stop endorsing formula feeding with freebies. >> it can be bad. if you don't have support and information you should have had going into it, formula there on the counter and the free bag from the hospital from your ob

okay. the farm also allows other outdoor activities like paint ball. owners are hoping that will carry them over to the fall and maybe some rain. what do you think? >> well, i like making lemonade out of lemons. >> any rain coming their way or our way? >> we have a couple storms on doppler 9,000. some are heavy, one is on the border of culpeper county. we'll start with live doppler 9,000. that prompted that warning until 7:30. so another 11 minutes or so. i think this did have hail in it at one time. that's the criteria for severe thunderstorms. but has to be hail about the size of quarters and winds 58 miles per hour. it doesn't matter how much lightning or rain is in there. pretty big rains from cumberland back through the mountains in west virginia. by and large, this is the heaviest storm. we'll zoom out to the west, because you folks will be getting pounded all day from kaiser to romney, back to peters petersberg.

we had anywhere from 1 to 2 1/2 inches of rain. we'll go back to the storm that prompted the warning. right on the border of culpeper and fauquier county, right around jefferson. you can see it's moving off to the north and east. that is 29 right there. so it expands a good area, really. this is where the hail is, right there. that's where the hail is. not quite as intense as it was, but there's hail. we'll widen back out and get your barings. this is the motion. it will go off to the north and east. we'll put this into motion over the next hour. it will weaken a little bit as it crosses 29. good rains headed your way. and could pick up some significant rain. some good news. our live weather cam outside brought to you by michael and son. 84 downtown. dew points upper 60s. pressure over the past hour falling at 29.90 inches of mercury. rain cooled air, 78 in
