manassas, 67 in hagerstown. that helps this afternoon. another very warm, muggy day. high temperature 88 in town, some spots after the storms fire early enough, let's check in with monika samtani. >> reporter: 600 center street south of route 606 in herndon crews are dealing with a very serious accident. we want to avoid that area of herndon, if you can. you see all these triangles behind me, it is all overnight construction. all those areas should be cleared up. you see a bit of yellow here. there was an accident on the outer loop sitting on the shoulder but still attracting a little bit of attention. let's go live outside right now into college park and you are looking fine here, this is the outer loop past route 1 heading into the interchange. let's go back over to our maps

and we'll head over to the other side of town. one more last live look outside, and here we are if you are planning to head northbound i 95. back with more traffic coming up at 5:10. back to you guys. we begin with breaking news of a fatal hit and run in herndon, virginia. investigators found a woman dead in a parking lot along center street. they have been released her identity just yet. the car authorities believe was involved in the crash was nearby and witnesses told investigators they saw someone running from the scene. this morning a 12-year-old boy continues to fight for his life after his father snaps, kills his wife, their two-year-old daughter and then himself. >> authorities are trying to figure out why this happened. delia joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning andrea and mike. very troubling story out of calvert county this morning. police are gathering evidence, trying to figure out what went

wrong. but we, this morning, have uncovered court documents that could offer some explanation at the very least. according to the records that we have uncovered, 31-year-old cynthia heyward filed for divorce in 2007, but close to go to counseling -- chose to go to counseling instead. now she and her two-year-old daughter are dead, and her 12-year-old is recovering from a slashed neck. the husband frank used guns on them and then set a fire. >> there was nothing else we could have done. we were very fortunate to save frank heyward iii. >> we will learn more as the

days continue and the investigation continues in calvert county. a great aunt, i should tell you, who was living in the home managed to escape unharmed. she is the one who called police and had them respond to the home. coming up at 5:30, hear from a man who recently exchanged e-mails with the suspect about his problems at home. she took an arrow to the head but a woman is expected to survive. someone was practicing archery with a cross bow when one of the arrows ricochet and hit this woman in the head. a bill that would ban abortions in the district after 20 weeks of pregnancy has failed to pass the house. 17 democrats crossed party lines to support it, however it required a two-thirds vote for passage. the measure is based on the disputed claim that fetuses can

shows the 34-year-old, who has muscular dystrophy, answering the door. then another suspect holds him down as they strip his place of a television, xbox, and the man's pain pills. before the robbers leave they hide his cell phone behind a chair leaving him to crawl for half an hour in order to summon help. >> these guys truly were sadistic in their demeanor in robbing this guy. there was no way he could have defended himself. >> jail is too good for them. police believe the victim was actually set up by his cousin after being told the men were stopping by to pick up medication for him. one suspect is already under arrest the other is still at large. >> what is wrong with people? that makes me so mad. >> under the jail may be better for him. freshmen are you worried

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it is coming up on 5:15 this wednesday morning. yesterday the showers came down and i saw all of these people running and they didn't have umbrellas. you gave us a heads up yesterday. >> we were talking about threat for showers and storms and keep the umbrella handy just in case one of them came to you. yellow alert is out because we do have the threat for scattered showers and storms. >> we missed it by that much. >> yeah about three or four dependings of a degree shy. it was much more humid this july and last july. let's start with it this morning. another muggy day around here. well south of dc, we'll get our chances before the day is out. here's your day planner. we start with temperatures in the 60s and 70s

across-the-board. in washington by lunch time about 83, 84. could each see a couple of showers and storms popping by then. 86 by 3:00. 88 between hours and by 6:00, 85. like yesterday any showers and storms. i picked up a quick four-tenths of an inch in 20 minutes up in montgomery county. we have got some showers close to town. approaching salisbury this morning, weakening a little bit. still have moderate rains in the bay and especially on the eastern shore. we are looking at the showers here. southern prince george's, eastern charles, down toward prince frederick, solomon, st. mary's city, ridge. east-northeast came brimming, you are going to get a little bit of rain here.

it may last an hour or so. here's the real heavy stuff. >> temperatures 70 in salisbury, 73 in town. out to our west and southwest temperatures running in the low to mid-60s this morning. outside on our michael and son weather camera, good visibility, cloudy skies. 73. it is a tad less humid. the humidity is still up there at 78%. we have the ridge of high pressure still over the central and southern plains. places like oklahoma city today could be around 112 degrees. elk city was 108. really not much has changed in the overall pattern from yesterday. we are going to fire up more of that stuff as we go throughout the afternoon today. let's see the futurecast quickly before we get to the forecast. thunderstorms pulling away this morning by lunch time looking

5:22. we are starting off with showers and storms south ask east of us. this is a little bit further on long on the models out toward the lower eastern shore and parts of southern married. should be much quieter by 9:00, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. lunch time should also be all right, starting to pop a few showers here. as we get into the middle of the afternoon the mountains will initiate storms that start to move east. highs in the mid to upper 80s, so keep the rain gear handy, just in case. good morning, everybody. the mlb trade deadline came and went yesterday and the nationals remained quiet. for the team with the best record in baseball, i guess there really wasn't that much that needed changing. the phillies, on the other hand, traded two of their three outfielder. shane victorino and hunter pence. the nats may face a different

team last night. it was a bad night for stephen strasburg. he gave up a season high six runs. two innings later it got worse. jimmy rollins, bryce harper can't get to it as it bounces off the wall. rollins with an inside the park homerun. despite trade rumors the phillies did keep cliff lee. the phillies shutout the nats 6-0. as for your redskins training camp update for the first time this year, mother nature interrupted redskins camp yesterday. before the thunder rolled in though, quarterback rg iii was able to get in plenty of work with his receivers. he showed off his strength and speed but continued to struggle when rolling out to the left and failing to get the ball out quick enough. afterwards mike shanahan addressed the issue.

kills his wife and their two-year-old daughter and then himself. >> police are trying to figure out why this whole thing happened. dealia has more. it is just so sad. >> reporter: it has shaken the whole community. there was trouble in the home, the sheriff says this is a horrible scene, however, he feels lucky that they were able to rescue and save the 12-year-old boy who is still fighting for his wife this morning. but police say his mom, 31-year-old sing new heyward and his two-year-old sister natalie were killed. the 12-year-old frank heyward is alive but suffering from burns and a slashed neck. cynthia alleged nearly a decade of physical and mental abuse

but later decided not to divorce. the couple's home was up for sale, facing foreclosure. >> he said we are keeping it quiet. my wife and i are going through a little trouble. >> sad situation. terrible. absolutely horrible. >> to do that and take a two-year-old's life is completely ridiculous. makes no sense. >> good news in the situation. the 12-year-old boy is recovering from those severe wounds. his great aunt, his mother's great aunt who was also living in the home managed to escape completely unharmed. she is the one who frantically called police. the sheriff's department told us they recovered several handguns inside the house, they believe some of them could have been used in this attack. back to you. a tougher drunk driving law goes into effect today for dc

motorists. first time offenders can now be jailed for 180 days and fined up to $1000. first time offenders with the blood alcohol content of .20 or higher or repeat offenders now have a mandatory jail sentence of at least ten days. and the limit for commercial drivers is now set at .04. campaign 2012 news now, mitt romney has wrapped up his six day three stop tour overseas, and judging by some of the controversy, he may be happy it is over. in london mitt romney questioned whether or not the city was ready for the olympics and his assessment may be right but they sure weren't happy about it. in israel he told jewish donors their culture makes them better off than the palestinians. then at poland's tomb of the unknown soldier romney's campaign spokesperson lashed out at a reporter for a response to some questions about those comments he has made.

we are in the 70s in town, 60s just west of us. 76 by 8:00 in washington with a noon time temperature about 83, 84. winds out of the south today. this afternoon 86. by 4:00 forecast high of 88 and an 58:00 p.m. temperature. going back out to the nationals game tonight there is a chance for an early shower or storm. temperatures comfortable dropping into maybe the upper 70s by the end of the game. showers came out of the northern neck of southern maryland and the lightning and thunder is going away as this approaches salisbury but locally, heavier downpours here in the bay on the eastern shore toward cambridge. switch it to live doppler 9 hd. this may make it toward queens town area, across the bay,

south of route 606. it was a deadly overnight accident. avoid that area if you can. i'll be back with more traffic. we get our fair share of extreme weather around here, especially within the last year. but can we link it to climate change our global warning? >> an environment al group in virginia said it crunched the numbers to prove there is a link. >> extreme precipitation weather, like downpours and big storms, including snow from 2010 are happening more often. according to reports by environment virginia. >> in the past 60 or so years we are 30% more likely to see severe precipitation than we were at the beginning of that period. a storm that used to happen every 12 months on average now happens every nine months, on average. an organizer for the environment al group says such extreme

weather events are also getting bigger. >> the scientific consensus says global warning is contributing to the situation. >> you can link global warming to the increased frequency of extreme precipitation. in fact a federally funded study concluded the global temperature has increased over the past 50 years and that is due primarily to human induced emissions of gases. >> not all ex streek stream events are going to become more frequent. >> reporter: environment virginia hopes its study will encourage the beam administration to pass legislation to have stricter fuel efficiency standards for cars and reduce pollution for new power plants. >> the data for the virginia report only goes back 60 years

and that is key to this debate. those who challenge global warming, including a former staff member of the environmental works committee argue others have found temperature and precipitation were higher a thousand years ago. people are so generous with food donations they had to turn some away. not anymore at a new food bank the size of two football fields. it is the new home of the capital area food bank. >> yesterday we told you this was happening. kristen fisher was at the grand opening. she takes us on a tour of the $40 million distribution center. >> reporter: this new facility has been seven years in the making. this year alone, they have seen a 22% increase in the amount of calls to their hunger hotline. and this huge warehouse will double if not triple the amount of food that goes out to the community. >> when i walked in i was like wow, this is amazing.

>> reporter: harrison runs one of the 700 agencies that relies on the capital area food bank for food. today she is one of the first people to shop inside its new afood district probation center. >> i literally see a vision where there is sufficient food for everybody. >> we were turning away food. >> reporter: lynn brantley, who founded the food bank in 1980, needed more space. >> their warehouse just more than doubled in size. >> this is our wonderful warehouse the community has built. it is 98,000 square feet of warehouse space. >> reporter: including massive refrigerated loading docks, solar pams, a state of the art teaching kitchen. and the best part is, it is all paid for. >> we are in this building with no debt. so all the money will go into food programs and food distribution. >> reporter: last year the food

it was a huge night for america's olympic athletes in london. >> they keep putting medals

around their necks. swimming superstar michael phelps made history and put the crowds on the edge of their seats, too. >> reporter: olympic legend michael phelps thrilled the crowd. he came on strong and was in the lead until the final moments. phelps's mom thought he had won, but he just missed it. the south african rival was 5 hungs of a second -- hundredths of a second faster. a victory gave femmeps his 19th medal next, making him the most decorated olympic athlete ever. the games are being played in more than 30 venues across the city.

>> reporter: more storms this afternoon this morning we have had storms on the eastern shore. still a bit of rain. kind of a cool shot out there, we have mostly cloudy skies, sunrise in about ten minutes, 83 degrees, 84 at noon with a couple of storms staring to pop. a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 86 degrees. storms were on the hefty side. heavy downpours this morning, you can see how the storms really hit, off to our south. lightning is starting to really go away, a couple of strikes showing up here near the bay bridge. a couple of lightning strikes here as well. we have a little rain in calvert, prince george's county from the bay bridge and the eastern shore. 77 in annapolis. 70
