right towards a plane which was actually coming in to land. this happened tuesday afternoon. delia goncalves has more. >> reporter: confusion in the air traffic control center and a near collision midair. >> i just -- prayed to god that nothing happens to me. >> reporter: according to the federal aviation administration, two outgoing u.s. airway commuter planes came dangerously close to a landing jet liner tuesday afternoon. the first departing plane within a mile and seconds of the arriving plane. the second departing plane, a mile behind. >> to be safe. >> right. >> and the kind of mistakes that you would make from i understand from the news is unacceptable. >> reporter: the faa is trying to determine what exactly went wrong. but we know so far is that air traffic controllers were busy

redirecting flights following a shift in wind direction. apparently there was some coin of miscommunication -- kind of miscommunication that could have been catastrophic had it not been caught with mere seconds to spare. >> we're talking about people here who do this every day. they're very, very good. they are highly professional. so where was the breakdown in procedure? we have to understand where it was so we can make sure it doesn't happen again. >> i fly about 100,000-miles a year on u.s. air and i was a little bit disturbed to hear about the near miss. i know they have a lot of things to handling and there's a lot of pressure but we would hope they're paying really close attention to disasters don't streak. >> reporter: at reagan national airport, delia goncalves, 9news now. >> u.s. airways released this statement to us quote --

well, there's a new twist to a deadly hit and run incident in herndon. police are trying to determine whether a body found in a creek near the accident scene is the victim's husband. the discovery was made yesterday as officers searched the 600 block of center street. police believe that 32-year-old may have struck and killed his wife and then sped off in his black camry and hit several other cars. he failed to show up for work yesterday. >> my guess my wife you know talk about them you know always pick up pizza for them and pick up clothes for them. yeah i mean he was so nice to his family i think. >> police have yet to positively identify him or link him to his wife's death. the couple has three children. nearly 100 d.c. school teachers have been fired. the "washington post" reports that the move came this week

after the teachers posted low scores on a key evaluation tool. they account for less than 3% of the school's work force. the d.c. public schools actually distomessed nearly 400 teachers since 2009 due to poor performance. an autopsy is being performed on a body found in prince george's county. the discovery was made last night in the 12,200 block of b rahmer circle. it was found in a creek in fort washington and police are calling this a suspicious death until the autopsy is completed. a recent 9 wants to know investigation was the center of a congressional hearing -- yesterday. the foe bus was $30 million -- focus was $30 million in previously unreported bonus money at the general services administration. gsa chief administrative services officer cynthia he iser testified before a health

the local economy. we're turning our attention now to the olympics. where the american gold rush is not over yet. more american swimmers are taking top honors in the pool at the summer games. monica villamizar is in london. >> reporter: american's new resurgence of the title of the world's fastest man on water. in the 100-meter freestyle sprint he got the fingers to the wall just a fraction of a second before the australian world champion. it's the closest race of its kind since the l. a. games in 1984. team usa's women struck gold too. allison smith anchored the freestyle relay team to victory. after the race she was too exhausted and emotional to talk to the press. the team triumph gave missy franklin her second medal of games. it's bringing london into life but business owners in the central of the capital say

they're losing out because tourist numbers have dropped. tourist attractions seem to have lost their charms with empty seats of buses. >> it's not been that crowded that's true. >> reporter: some businesses blame london fills with talk of -- officials with talk of potential chaos. selling only about a third of the tects they usually do in the theaters. >> they're not interested in theaters. they're not necessarily interested in eating in restaurants or going to museums. they're here for the olympic games. >> reporter: the first tragedy came last night when a double decker bus crashed into a cyclist killing him. british police arrested a man an suspicion of dangerous driving. monica villamizar, cbs news, london. >> baltimore native michael phelps and ryan lochte have a finals showdown today. a victory by phelps would make him the first male swimmer to win an individual event in three consecutive olympics.

workers at the except gone's missile defense agency have apparently been told to

stop surfing pornography on their government issued computers. the executive director sent out a memo last month to say some employees have been accessing websites or transmitting messages with sexually explicit images. it goes on to say not only does the porn take away from productive work time, but it opens up the network to harmful computer viruses. the cia is reportedly providing covert support for syrian rebels battling president assad's forces. that's according to cnn. the network says that president obama has signed a secret order authorizing the united states' support. it is unclear exactly what type of support is being provided. the administration ruled out arming the rebels at least for now. well, virginia will be a key swing state in the elections this november. and that's why the president is visiting the commonwealth

today. president obama will appear at loudoun county high school in leesburg tonight. he's expected to arrive around 7:30. the president won virginia if 2008 by more than -- in 2008 by more than 6% and he was the first democrat to win that state since 1964. meanwhile, mitt romney will be in the swing state of colorado today. it is his first campaign trip since coming back from poland. the presumptive republican nominee is defending his tax plan, a study from the nonpartisan tax policy center says the romney plan would increase taxes on the middle class. this campaign dismisses the study as a liberal attack. don't tax my medals. those are words from olympic champions in london. winners get a little known cash prize from the usoc. $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. but, the irs taxes the value of

howard says it is going to be hot today. >> already is hot. as you've been in here i was out on the weather terrace and we're in the upper 80s and feeling like we're in the 90s already. >> really? >> we'll see a couple of storms but i don't think we're going to see tom today and then the -- too many today and then the thunderstorm chances with us tomorrow, saturday, sunday and monday. >> in the evening? >> mainly afternoon and evening stuff you know very typical

pattern we're in and a few more weeks before things start to cool off here. fall is still nowhere close. what's happening for the afternoon on the day planner, temperatures going into the 90s here. 91-degrees by 1:00. in fact i think 94 in washington top out here. with a slight chance that we'll see a thunderstorm in a couple of spots but i call them isolated for the afternoon. winds oh south to southwest 5 miles an hour. maybe even southeasterly this evening. still 89 at 7:00. and 85 at 9:00. so if you're going out to see the phillies and if nationals weather could be -- the nationals weather should be pretty good for that. just a little bit on the steamy side. the satellite and radar and all quiet here. that's why i don't think we're going to sew that much but with temperatures up there now and it's sticky. 89 at reagan national and 82 martinsburg and the whole shenandoah valley in the 80s. 89 la plata and got 87 from

newland right now and cambridge 89. so you see a very toasty afternoon. and looking outside on the michael & son weather camera, just a few puffy clouds with a hazy conditions. feeling like 94 though. that heat index now the humidity the 53%. but dew points been hovering around 7 # all day. a sticky, sticky sort of air mass is on top of us. just need a little bit more of a kicker to get things going and right now not too much. we have the higher elevationst to the west and maybe a few storms will try to initiate over the next couple of hours. here's the futurecast. not seeing all that much going on. and i think that will be the case today. isolated storms this afternoon. as we get into tonight, going to be a quiet night but a muggy night. temperatures only getting into the mid- to upper 70s here in d.c.. 70ish in the cooler suburbs. now tomorrow morning 5:45 and midday as we pop the showers and storms with the daytime heating. they'll fall apart at night and the same thing will happen as we get into the friday -- or saturday and sunday time frame. want to go out to the tropics and watching a tropical

depression, this is number five here. looking kind of disorganized so not strengthened and it continues to move to the west at about 20 miles an hour with winds of 35. looks like tomorrow, midday, late morning lunchtime, could be passing just south of the martinique area to st. lucia as a tropical depression still. wind and rain out of that and then it's going to go west in the caribbean by monday and after that will it strengthen to a hurricane? will it stay disorganized and end up at the yucatan, cuba or the gulf of mexico next week? lots of questions we don't have the answer to. here's your forecast today 94 degrees. only the isolated storm or two. 77 in town tonight but 70s in the suburbs. tomorrow and saturday yellow alert days because i expect more thunderstorms and they could impact your plans for the afternoon and evening hours. 95 tomorrow. 93 saturday. up around 94, 95 again on sunday. as we head toward monday, here comes a front so i think we'll

[ obama ] i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. indigo landing chef eric guttierrez has a very simple recipe for us. i am one-on-one with chef eric guttierrez and he is the chef at indigo landing. which is right near the washington national airport in the washington sailing marina and i didn't know there was a national watermelon day. it's in august and today in honor of washington watermelon day i guess, we're going to do a gazpacho which is a little bit different.

>> we are, we're going to do a watermelon gazpacho a twist on the traditional tomato gazpacho. it's a really easy recipe for the home cook to make. feel free to substitute whatever melons you may enjoy. honey due and cantaloupe. >> what do we do? >> we should get started. the average cook you're probably going to have to do this in two different batches because the average blender isn't going to be big enough. take eight cups of cubed watermelon and load it up in the blender. >> you put a little water in. >> i did because that's going to help the motor get going. that's about half right there and then peel a seedless cucumber and that goes right in. a little bit of red bell pepper. don't worry about the knife cuts if you're going this at home. it doesn't have to be perfect. it will get pureed anyway. a half of a red onion. >> i love them. >> i really like the flavor compared to like a white onion

in the gazpacho and we're not really straying far from the traditional recipe. we're using watermelon instead of tomato. come in with two tablespoons of cilantro. a dash of your favorite vinegary hot sauce. in this case using tabasco. to add more zest to the recipe add some balsamic vinegar about two tablespoons. and a little bit of extra virgin olive oil. >> uh-huh. >> whoa. >> okay. >> blend it -- >> it wants to start. okay. >> once we have them all in the blender just come through with a little bit of salt and pepper to taste and it's going to bring out the flavor of the melon. >> they are all on the website. jchayward.com. >> absolutely. >> as a chef has decided to share it with me but of course you can go to indigo landing and get it there. >> be this recipe is also -- >> professionally. >> going to be a part of the restaurant week men knew which runs august 13th through the 19th.

just give it is quick buzz in your blender. >> okay. and with any gazpacho or sold soup you want to put it in the refrigerator for two hours and let all the flavors come together. just going to transfer this over. >> all right. put it in the refrigerator. >> and -- like tv magic, we have one that's already ready and it's been chilling for a couple of hours. >> okay. all right. chef. >> we're going to bring this right on over. see it's got nice beautiful color. >> oh it looks delicious. >> you wouldn't know that wasn't tomato gazpacho. >> no, i was getting ready to say it looks like it has tomato sauce. >> this is a great recipe for a first course for like a barbecue. you can also serve it you know in a more higher end setting as well. >> then finish it with? >> the cheese kind of like the italian feta but a little bit less salty and a little bit of basil oil a half cup basil and a half cup olive oil. >> don't forget go to indigo
