the fbi and wisconsin police are tonight treating the slayings as a domestic terrorist type incident. they have yet to attain the motive behind the attack that killed seven people including the gunman and wounded three more. we've got team coverage for you. let's begin with derrick blakely. he brings us the latest developments from oak creek, wisconsin. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. team officers and several police officers swarmed a sikh temple after a gunman allegedly killed six people and wounded three others. >> because of the heroic actions of our officers, they stopped this from being worse than it could have been. >> reporter: police say the suspect ambushed a 20-year veteran of the oak creek police department before back-ups stepped in. >> another officer on scene was engaged by the suspect. our officer did engage that individual. and that individual is deceased. >> witnesses here at the sikh temple ever wisconsin say the shootings started around 10:30 as worshippers gathered for sunday morning services. >> there was one guy outside. he just bang, four shots, and

he just went inside. i was just hiding. >> reporter: people already inside the temple also looked for places to stay safe. >> my mom called my cousin. she said that her and 15 others locked themselves in a pantry. >> reporter: police have not identified the suspect but law enforcement officials tell cbs news he is 40 years old and used a 9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol. the leader was wounded as he tried to confront the suspect. >> the president tried to hold the attacker, but he got shot in the back so he's in the hospital for a surgery. >> reporter: members of the community quickly gathered to try to find out what was happening. >> pulling the gun out, that's what's shocking to me. >> reporter: the fbi is leading the investigation and is working to determine if the shooting is an act of domestic terrorism. derrick blakely for cbs news, oak creek wisconsin. >> of course, the wisconsin shooting is having a devastating effect on the sikh

community here in washington. matt jablow spoke tonight with a sikh man for whom the tragedy hit far too close to home. >> reporter: he says news of the shooting in wisconsin brought back a tidal wave of bad memories, now more than ten years old. >> it doesn't affect one person, one family. it effects the whole community. >> reporter: 2001, four days after the attacks on the world trade center on the pentagon is when his brother was shot to death in phoenix by a man allegedly trying to avenge the attacks on america by radical muslims. >> he thought we belong to the middle east or taliban or any terrorist group. >> reporter: of course, he was not a radical muslim. in fact, he wasn't a muslim at all. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: he was one of about 700,000 members of the sikh religion, now living here in the united states. ♪ ♪

>> today, during the afternoon prayer service at the sikh spiritual center in rockville, he joined a few dozen other worshippers in a special prayer for the victims in wisconsin. >> it was a matter of time that this would happen, and obviously, it's a very tragic that this has happened today. >> reporter: though no information has yet been released about the suspect in the shooting or about possible motives, most people say they're convinced that the sikh community was targeted by a violent and extremely misguided madman. >> people don't have the understanding of the richness of our faith and how we have been part and parcel of america for the last 100 years. >> reporter: the sikh cultural center in rockville has never apparently been the target of a hate crime. despite that, in light of what happened in wisconsin, the leaders say they're seriously considering increasing security. matt jablow, 9 news now. president barack obama says he and first lady michelle obama are, quote, deeply

saddened by the shooting at the sikh temple in wisconsin. the president tells the people of oak creek that the american people have them in our thoughts and prayers. he says our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wound. the president pledged that his administration will provide whatever support is necessary to those investigating the shootings. meantime, republican challenger mitt romney also expressed his sorrow about the shooting. romney called it, quote, a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship. he says our hearts are with the victims, the families and the entire oak creek sikh community. we join americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead. now, police have not released a motive but law enforcement sources tell cbs news tonight the suspect's house in a milwaukee suburb is now being searched. moving on. hundreds marched in downtown silver springs in support of the maryland dream act today. that legislation allows

undocumented immigrants in state tuition. they're marching with their futures at stake. surae chinn has the story of how one group wants to stop them in their tracks. >> reporter: this november, maryland voters will not only get to vote on the next president but also on the dream act referendum. proponents want to overturn legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants in- state tuition. but immigrants are trying to keep their dreams alive. they call themselves the dreamers, with hopes of a future in america through higher education. >> i want to be a psychologist and after that, join the air force. >> reporter: veronica came to this country when she was ten. >> i'm here because i want the dream act to pass in november. >> reporter: cindy came from the war-torn country of ivory coast. the dream act approved by last year's maryland legislative session requires qualified students to go to a community college and after two years the chance to transfer to a four- year university. opponents say that takes away

opportunities for maryland and out of state citizens a spot at, say, the university of maryland. >> very controversial. >> reporter: help save maryland gathered signatures to get the measure on the ballot before our citizens will be tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to subsidize people who have no moral or legal right to be here in maryland. >> reporter: he claims the dream act will cost schools $44,000 a student for a four- year degree, on top of higher tuition for all students. there could be a loss of profit to the universities. some of this is offset as i had mentioned by the increase in enrollment. >> reporter: the institute onimproving immigration policies says there's not enough research on the impact on taxpayers and the state. >> there might be a long-term economic benefit to the state of maryland for educating students within their state. >> reporter: the politically charged issue is not stopping veronica and cindy who are inspired by their hopes for a

future in america. to qualify under the dream act it's imposed the student must attend a maryland high school for three years and prove they or their parents pay taxes. i'm surae chinn for 9 news now. the son of philadelphia eagles football coach andy reid is dead tonight. 29-year-old garrett reed was found this morning in a dorm room at lee high university. that's where the eagles are holding training camp. the cause of his death has not been determined. police received a 911 call after 7:00 this morning. >> we are an investigation with the cooperation of leehigh campus police department and i personally pronounced mr. reid deceased at the scene. the investigation will be ongoing. and at this time, you know, it will be pending the completion of the investigation. >> it's a tough morning for all of us in the eagles family. garrett grew up with this team, and this makes this news even harder for us to process.

our hearts go out to andy, tami, brit, spencer, crosby and joann. >> garrett reed had been assisting the strength coaches at training camp. >> he has battled substance abuse in the past but authorities say they found no suspicious activities when they discovered him this morning. lightning struck at a nascar race killing one person and injury several others.it happened in the parking lot of pocono raceway this afternoon. one victim is in critical condition, five others being treated for less serious injuries. the lightning strike occurred after the race had been called off due to the bad weather. southwest airlines say it's making refunds to the customers billed multiple times for a single flight. that mistake occurred when southwest facebook fans clicked on a promotion to receive a 50% discount. the promotion somehow back tired. hundreds of would-be fliers were build repeatedly, in some

cases 20 or more times. southwest airlines says it has identified all the affected customers and begun filing refunds to their bank accounts. the airline also says it will pay for any overdraft fees. drought and fast-moving wildfires continue to pose big problems for residents of oklahoma. the freedom hill fire is the largest of those blazes. it burned more than 58,000 acres and destroyed some 40 buildings. hundreds of residents have been forced to flee their homes. so far there have been no deaths reported but officials fear the fires broad path might change all that. meantime, residents of luther, oklahoma, were allowed to return to their homes today after firefighters managed to control a wildfire that forced 60 residents to flee. many returned home to find ash and rubble where their houses once stood. >> when you come back to this, you see it all destroyed, and everything you touch just is ash and there's not anything you can save. >> it's certainly been a very tough week for the state of

oklahoma. just numerous fires throughout the state, major fires, a lot of small fires. it is really taxed the resources of the state of oklahoma. >> investigators say that fire in luther, oklahoma, was deliberately set. they're looking for a man in a black pickup truck who reportedly threw newspapers out of the vehicle, then set those newspapers on fire. a kensington maryland woman is saved tonight after being trapped on an island in rock creek. montgomery county fire and rescue responded to a call around 9:30 tonight for a report of a woman stranded near beach drive and cedar lane. firefighters used a rescue boat to bring the woman to safety. she wasn't injured. no word on how the woman became trapped in the first place. coming up later on 9 news now this sunday night, all eyes are on mars. >> tonight's it. superbowl of planetary exploration. one yard line, one play left. >> it's white knuckle time for nasa engineers as their $2.5 billion mars rover project is

promotion and energy is the way to go. >> also said to be on that short list, the governors from louisiana and new jersey and florida senator mike rubio. a fatal shooting in northwest washington that left one man dead. tonight it happened just before 3:00 this morning in the petworth neighborhood near georgia avenue and park road. police have not released a name of the victim at this point. tonight tropical stormernesto is spinning over the southern coast. it may go into the gulf of mexico. some eastern parts of the island already being trenched. earnesto threatening to dump 3- 6 inches of rain on the caribbean island before drenching honduras, belize and mexico possibly as a hurricane. forecasters say it may weaken as a storm over land, then re- emerge as a hurricane over mexico sometime next week. workers who paid more into

social security taxes during their careers than they'll receive in benefits. that's according to an analysis by the associated press which finds the situation will get worse for future retirees. as recently as 1985, workers with every income level could retire and expect more benefits than they paid in taxes. in 18960, male re-- 1960, male retirees who lived to be 78 years old and female who lived to be 81 could expect to get back 7 times more benefits than they paid in social security taxes. those days now long gone. just ahead on 9 news now this sunday night, remembering actress marilyn monroe on the 50th anniversary of her death. also after a stormy sunday, what can we expect come monday? the full forecast coming up next.

>> the high-tech rover curiosity is tonight closing in on mars and will attempt a tricky new landing technique in just about two hours. if all goes well, the rover will hit the top of the martian atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour. it will use brakes and a parachute to slow down and then lower itself inside the massive

crater. once inside, the rover will look for signs of life on mars. >> reporter: so tonight's it. superbowl of planetary exploration. one yard line, one play left. >> reporter: it's white knuckle time for nasa engineers who admit their $2.4 billion mars curiosity project is posed to earn a historic win or a heartbreaking loss. >> we are rationally confident, emotionally terrified, and we're ready for edo. >> reporter: that is entry, decent and landing or what nasa calls the seven minutes of terror. curiosity is racing towards the red planet at 8,000 miles per hour and gravity is expected to accelerate it to a mind-blowing 13,200 miles per hour before it gets just 7 minutes to come to a halt at the martian surface. tonight computers will execute a supersonic parachute, tethers

and one insanely choreographed landing. >> if we succeed, it will be one of the greatest feats in planetary exploration ever. >> reporter: it will look for any signs of life, analyzing soil and snapping pictures. >> the first pictures will be taken just shortly after touchdown by the rear hazard camera which you see here. >> reporter: it's not clear whether we'll see those first black and white images within minutes or hours. we do know the high resolution images everyone's waiting for will take days to get here. >> incredible images, color images, real color this time. >> reporter: all systems are go for a 10:31 landing tonight. she says with a decade's worth of preps in place, this team is hoping for a little luck. >> i have my lucky four-leaf clover. i wore it when we launched and that turned out well. i figure if i wear it again tonight, we're going to have good success. >> i've never seen you so animated. you are so into this. that landing is no way a sure thing.

>> no, it is very critical. the scientists did their best to predict how they need to slow this thing down to bring it into the atmosphere of mars successfully. so everyone's waiting with their fingers crossed hoping they got the equations right. >> we have no reason to be disappointed if they don't succeed in the landing. >> true. it was a college try. >> okay. all right. thank you. >> how many billion dollar college try. >> $2.5 billion. >> let's hope it works out. we've been lucky enough to get showers moving through. at least at this hour of the night, mainly gentle rain. a little pop of moderate rainfall around new market down toward front royal. most of the action the heavier rain has stayed up on the i-95 corridor a little north of baltimore and headed tophiladelphia and new york city. for us in the metro region, mainly cloudy skies. very, very muggy on satellite radar. this loop shows you how steady some of these rain bands were as they came through earlier on this evening. as of right now, we're in a bit

of a lull. overnight tonight though, several bands are going to be moving on through. we'll have an opportunity into the early morning hours, even your morning commute could be a little bit wet as the moisture will still be around. the problem is we're tracking that cold front and it's moving very, very slowly. so conditions outside right now, a little bit on the muggy side. sticky and steamy with very high humidity and dew point numbers. winds out of the southwest have calmed down a little bit overnight. >> but our temperatures are still sitting at very warm 80 degrees for reagan national and in the upper 70s for college park and even looking at warm temperatures off to the north and toward the west. over all, mostly cloudy and muggy. scattered showers and storms overnight tonight. many could be heavy, even a little pop of severe weather is possible, but the overnight lows are not going to budge too much. most of us will stay in the middle range to lower 70s early by sunrise and it won't be until that front moves on through we'll see some relief. the forecast for tomorrow, warm

temperatures from cumberland stretched into the washington beltway region. most of us make it to the middle range, 80s. we'll see lower 80s in a few spots as well. but the futurecast forecast model keeps opportunity for those showers and storms well after our lunch break tomorrow, even the rush hour tomorrow evening could feature some moisture and a little bit of cloud cover. >> again because we're tracking the timing of the front moving through. it is moving very, very slowly. so here's what you have to look forward to as we progress our forecast into the next 24 hour period. hitting the 80s by noontime, moving into the middle 80s by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow is a code yellow day. that means we have the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms. we'll definitely see an improvement on tuesday. timing again will it be tuesday morning or monday overnight. a green code day for tuesday once we get that front passed the area, and then by wednesday, back to yellow because the shower or storm chance is still there. the best humidity would he feel tuesday and wednesday will be a

welcome change. it's not going to last too long. >> thanks a lot. fans are paying tribute to film icon marilyn monroe on the 50th anniversary of her death this weekend. flowers were placed on monroe's star of the walk today in hollywood. her death back in 1962 still debated among her fans. she was found naked facedown on her bed inside a residence. she was only 36. monroe's death was ruled a problem i believe suicide, but many people feel differently about it. the l.a. district attorney reviewed the case in 1992. he concluded there was no evidence of criminal activity. just ahead on 9 news now this sunday night, the nats and rg3 looking good. sports plus preview next.

>> all right, how much more is he going to go this season? >> probably about six or seven more starts. if the projected cutoff time is what they're saying. we're talking, of course, about stephen strasburg. if you're keeping track, strasburg has pitched 127 in a third innings. they expected shut down number is between 160 and 170. we're hearing both numbers floating around which means about seven more starts. after last week's disaster against philly some critics say maybe he was losing his strength after having surgery. all that did was motivate the youngster. he came out angry today, bounced back in a big way. on the mound he threw six
