shooting at a temple in wisconsin. one said the gunman didn't say a word. he just started shooting. it happened in oak creek just south of milwaukee. member of the congregation were preparing a sunday meal when the gunman opened fire. six people and the gunman were killed. the alleged begun man's home is being searched right now. no motive so far. drew levinson is there. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, terrell. investigators spent much of the night inside the temple and inside the suspected shooter's home looking for clues. trying to figure out who he was, whaefs all about and why he did it. law enforcement sources tell cbs news the alleged gunman in sunday's seek temple shooting was a heavy-set 40-year-old caucasian who lived in the milwaukee area. officials say he was armed with a .9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol purchased legally in a local gun shop. witnesses describe a frantic scene around so:30 in the

morning. >> there was one guy outside, just bang first shot and he just went inside. i was just hiding. >> the gunman killed six people and wounded three others. police say it could have been worse if not for the quick action of the first officers who arrived on the scene. >> our officer, a 20-year veteran was ambushed. another officer was engaged by the suspect. our officer engaged that individual and the individual is deceased. >> the wounded officer underwent surgery and is expected to survive. local police are calling the attack domestic terrorism. but the fbi is urging caution. so farst, there's no ties between the suspected shooter and -- >> members are shaken. >> it's shocking. you don't expect this at the church. >> it's astounding that people can behave in this manner. it makes you question humanity in some ways. >> survivors say it was a stroke of luck that the gunman arrived

about an hour before most worshippers. a news conference is scheduled for later this morning. at that time, police may release the man's name. terrell? >> certainly get more answers. drew levinson in oak creek this morning. drew, thank you so much. there's a possible plea deal in the works in the last year's tucson, arizona shootings that wounded gabrielle giffords. jared loughner is ex approximate ekted to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison. he's accused of killing six people and wounding 13 others. survivors are part of an ad campaign calling on the presidential candidates to address gun control. >> president obama. >> governor romney. >> we demand a plan. >> because 48,000 americans will be murdered with guns during the next president's term. >> that's -- >> the campaign was produced by mayors against illegal guns. it was an engineering spectacular being called an unprecedented feat of technology. nasa's high tech laboratory curiosity safely landed on mars

overnight ready for the most ambitious exploration of the red planet yet. the mission, search for the basic elements of life. it didn't come out tense moments. teresa garcia is in pasadena, california, with more. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. it was exciting, it was tense and there was a dramatic countdown inside the mission control room as each milestone was successfully ticked off during curiosity's seven-minute edl oren tri, descent and landing into gail crater. behind me is a full size replica of the rover which is now 154 million miles away and ready to begin an amazing scientific mission. nasa engineers cheered when the mars rover curiosity touched down. >> touchdown confirmed. >> minutes later, the first pictures from mars were beamed back. >> there is the wheel of the rover safely on the surface of mars. >> curiosity went through what was described as seven minutes

of terror to land on the planet. it hit the atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour before jet engines kicked in to slow it down. a crane then lowered the rover safely on to the surface where it reported back to nasa that it was working. >> this is not an incremental step forward. this is a revolutionary step forward. >> launched in november, the mars science laboratory is on a $2.5 billion mission to find the building blocks of life on mars. >> this whole enterprise, if you divide it by every woman, child, man in this country comes out to be the cost of the movie. i know i speak on behalf of all my colleagues in science, that's a movie i want to see. >> they've described this mission to mars somewhat like a hom wood movie and in true hollywood fashion, the stars have come out. >> i'm trying to change the inner city i come from. >> singer will i am played a song. they will play it from the martian's surface. leland melvin says actors,

singers can help with the mission. >> trying to get humans to the martian surface. i think we have to o do it as one collective. as entertainers, as ball players, as private sector, as government working together to make it happen. >> scientists say it will be years or decades before man walks on the red surface of mars. nasa officials are calling this a huge day for the nation. also, president obama issued a statement shortly after the landing saying that this accomplishment proves that even the longest odds are no match for american ingenuity and determination. before the geological field work can begin, the engineers basically have to go through a system of testing of rover. then it's all about the scientific mission forward. terrell, back to you. >> looking forward to it. teresa garcia in pasadena this morning rmt thank you so much. this isn't the first thim they've successfully landed a craft on the mars surface. the viking landers were the first to arrive on the red plap et. they sent these pictures back.

just last month, nasa released this image taken by the opportunity rover which has been there for eight years now. it shows a massive crater created billions of years ago. missions to mars, though, more often end in disappointment than success. out of more than 3 dozen attempts to fly by orland on mars, more than half ended in failure. we'll talk to cbs news space consultant bill harwood a little later on this morning. in the meantime, we'll move on. at least 16 egyptian soldiers at a gaza -- the gunmen bursa cross the border and -- israeli forces killed eight of the gunmen. they fired on one of the cars, the other exploded at the border crossing. syrian troops are preparing for a decisive battle for the city of aleppo. aleppo has been under siege for weeks. rebel leaders say there's an increase in syrian government

pressure. the obama administration reduced funding for planetary exploration. nasa backed out of two joint missions with the european space agency to mars. this is the last so-called flagship mission currently in the pipeline and getting it safely down to the surface of mars was a huge step for nasa. >> the ultimate goal here is to put a human being on mars. with this success, where are we in the timeline with that? >> we're a long way from putting humans on mars, terrell. probably in the late 2020s or 2030s is the earliest opportunity. but with this successful landing it shows once again, as they've said, american ingenuity is up to the task. this is one of the most complicated landings and entries they've attempted and they pulled it off without a hitch. while it doesn't relate directly to a manned flight, it gives confidence that when it comes down to it, they'll figure out a way to make it happen. >> bill harwood, thank you so much. no break from the wildfires burning across oklahoma as many

as 18 fires have been reported since last week. residents forced to evacuate were allowed to return home yesterday and as reported, some of the wildfires were made worse by the drought. >> the largest of nearly 20 fires burns in east central oklahoma's creek county. known as the freedom hill wildfire, it has burned over 58,000 acres. destroyed at least 40 structures and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents. >> it it's certainly been a tough week for the state of oklahoma. just numerous fires throughout the state. major fires, a lot of small fires. it has really taxed the resources of the state of oklahoma. >> while there are no reported deaths, officials are concerned there may be victims given the fire's broad path. in a summer where severe heat baked the state, parts of oklahoma have suffered through temperatures exceeding 110 degrees and according to the state forestry service, have created ideal wildfire conditions. while oklahoma saw lower temperatures, officials are

warning that fires can flare again. 25 miles northeast of oklahoma city, people in the town of luther are coming back to the burnt-out rubble that used to be their homes. on saturday, firefighters were able to gain control of a roaring wildfire that erupted outside of town. and then tore through it. wind with flames decimated nearly 60 homes and other buildings. residents like casey strahan lost everything. >> when you come back to this, you see it all destroyed and everything you touch is ash and there's not anything that you can see. >> investigators suspect the luther fire may have been intentionally set. the oklahoma county sheriff's department it looking for a person in a black pickup truck. that person was seen throwing newspapers out a window after setting them on fire. manuel bojorquez for cbs news, luther oklahoma. a deadly lightning strike at the pocono raceway. one man killed, nine injured

including one in critical condition. a severe line of thunderstorms forced officials to call the pennsylvania 400 yesterday. track officials say the victim was in or near his car in a parking lot behind the grandstand when the lightning struck. strorm ernesto dumped heavy rain. caused little damage. ernesto about 235 miles east of the nicaragua honduras border. forecasters say ernesto could become a hurricane later in the week. southwest airlines has begun refunding passengers overcharged because of a computer glitch. southwest says the trouble began with a half price fare promotion. passengers were accidentally billed multiple times for a single flight. in some cases 20 times. southwest says it will also pay customers for any overdraft fees. they better. coming up next, your monday morning weather and in sports, the thrill of victory and the agony of coming in second. a complete wrap-up of the london

as 105. mostly dry out west. in sports this morning, a big day in track and field at the london olympics. usain bolt is the fastest man on the planet. he torched the track with a new olympic record of 9.63 seconds. sanya richards-ross gave the u.s. its first gold winning the 400-meter. not a good day for mckayla maroney. she was heavily favored to win the vault but took a big fall. she got silver and was not happy. women's doubles for the women yams sitter. beat roger federer to take home the gold for great britain. china back in the lead with 61. 30 gold. the u.s. second with 28 golds, 60 overall. great britain in third with 37 medals. the cards versus the brewers. kyle loesh caught milwaukee looking allowing only four hits over six innings.

top stories now on a monday morning. authorities have labeled yesterday's shooting at a sikh temple in wisconsin, seven people, including the gunman were killed. they're searching his home but have yet to come up with a motive. curiosity sent back pictures moments after landing on the red planet. curiosity touched down after trying never before tried technology that steered it through the atmosphere. rains triggered landslides and flash flooding. dramatic video as a house topples into a raging river on sunday. at least 26 people have been killed, 40 others reported missing. more than 2,000 are living in relief camps. monsoon season runs through september. the oldest son of the eagles coach has died. the body of garrett reid was found in his room aught college sunday morning. the 29-year-old had a history of drug problems and did some prison time.

some showers yesterday evening and even this morning some spotty showers. >> it got dark quickly. >> dark and cloud. >> we do have showers around in spots this morning that will be the case. with the front in the neighborhood. we've got 80 still with light sprinkles at reagan national. we won't be dropping too much more here. upper 70s in d.c. with some areas, the cool spots closer to 70. 85 by noon. still can't rule out a spotty shower or thundershower, even this afternoon with highs in the upper 80s. yesterday we got to 98 degrees before the storms rolled in in the afternoon and evening. then look what we have this morning. just some spotty showers out there looking at it on our live doppler 9000 hd from reagan national at 4:00 a.m. and areas in central and southern prince george's county, southern and anne arundel. also coming toward winchester and west of culpeper from luray east of culpeper. even in southern fauquier county some light showers as

back to you. >> thanks, beverly. she didn't speak. she just started shooting said witnesses. this morning seven people are dead including the suspect in a shootout at a sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. he's described as a white man in his 40s. >> police are searching the suspect's home in a nearby town. three people including the first officer to arrive at the scene were wowntdzed in the shoot -- wounded in the shooting. all three remain in the hospital in critical condition. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. team officers and several police agencies swarmed the sikh temple near milwaukee, wisconsin after a gunman killed six people and wounded three others. >> because of the heroic actions of our officers, they stopped this from being worse than it could have been. >> reporter: police say the suspect ambush add 20-year veteran of the oak creek police department before backup stepped in. >> another officer who was on scene was engaged by the suspect. our officer did engage that individual and that individual is deceased. >> reporter: witnesses here at

the sikh temple of wisconsin say the shooting started around 10:30 as worshipers gathered for sunday morning services. >> there was one guy outside. just bang. he just went inside. i was just hiding. >> reporter: people who were already inside the temple also looked for places to stay safe. >> my mom called my cousin. she said that her and 15 others locked themselves in a pantry. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell cbs necessary he is 40 years old and used a 9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol. witnesses say the temple's president was wounded as he tried to confront the suspect. >> the president tried to like hold the attacker but he got a shot on his back so he's in the hospital for surgery. >> reporter: members of the community quickly gathered to try to find out what was happening. >> a place where you go and pray, pulling a gun out, that's what's shocking to me. >> reporter: the f.b.i. is leading the investigation and is working to determine if the shooting is annual act of
