73 in culpeper. leesburg 72. again, there are some spotty showers out there with your highs this afternoon a little bit below average. average is 88. we'll be in the mid- to upper 80s as opposed to mid- to upper 90s. we'll take that. it's 5:00 a.m. monika is off but beverly farmer is in with timesaver traffic. not a lot to tell you about which is good news. there had been a crash in the overnight hours on beach drive north of the sue tunnel and rock creek park. that should be out of your way according to the u.s. park police. that's good news heading into the district. around town no early troubles to tell you about. on the beltway, through virginia, maryland. incident free. this is the beltway south of route 50 in maryland coming up through landover on the right side of the screen is the outer loop heading into college park and on into university boulevard. everything open for you. i-270 corridor no early troubles. virginia beltway we're in good shape. so is the ride 066, 95 corridor and 395. a washout for most of the overnight road work. right now just a little bit of building volume to deal with

that's what's shocking to me. >> what i believe to my knowledge it's a hate crime. you can't just barge in and start doing that. >> at this point authorities have not officially labeled the shootings as a hate crime. however, investigators do have the gunman's computer and they're looking for clues. they could release the killer's identity later today. an autopsy is being performed on the son of philadelphia eagles coach andy reid. 29-year-old garrett reid was found sunday morning at a dorm room at lee high university. that's where the eagles are holding training camp this year. the cause of his death hasn't been derd at this point. -- determined at this point. police did receive a 911 call just before 7:00 yesterday morning and they found garrett reid dead. he had been assisting the eagles strength coach at the training camp. he's battled with substance abuse in years past but authorities said they found no apparent suspicious activity when they discovered the younger reid's body. maryland's house of delegates will convene friday for a special session on

gambling. that's after members of the state senators are scheduled to come back to annapolis. maryland currently allows slot machine gambling at five locations. lawmakers will be considering an expansion to include table games, such as blackjack at a new casino site in prince george's county at national harbor. lawmakers may also consider the possibility of internet gambling in the state. it is 5:04. time for the latest your money report this morning. jessica is off but we do have the headlines for you. >> wall street will start the week off trying to build on last week's megarally, a better than expected jobs report, the spark the market needed. >> the dow picked up 217 points on friday. the nasdaq was up 58. s&p 500 picked up 26 points. southwest airlines says it's making refunds to customers who were billed multiple times for a single flight. the mistake occurred when southwest facebook fans clicked on a promotion to receive a 50% discount. while the promotion -- well,

the promotion backfired. hundreds of would-be flyers saw their credit and debit cards billed repeatedly n. some cases 20 or more -- in some cases 20 or more times. southwest airlines has identified all affected customers and has begun filing refunds to their bank accounts. the airline says it will also pay for any overdraft fees. toyota's earnings rose 2.5% after posting its largest quarterly operating profits for four years from april to june. the company is reporting that it made $3.7 billion last quarter selling nearly 2.5 million vehicles. however, general motors is reporting that urgings -- earnings fell sharply last quarter but the figures were still better than estimated. hundreds were in downtown maryland to celebrate the dream act. they're marching with their futures at stake. >> reporter: this november maryland voters will not only get to vote on the next

president but also on the dream act referendum. proponents want to overturn legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants in state tuition. but today students are trying to keep their dreams alive. they call themselves the dreamers with hopes of a future in america through higher education. >> i want to be a psychologist and after that, join the air force. >> reporter: veronica came to this country when she was 10. >> i'm out here because i want the dream act. >> reporter: cindy came from the war torn country of ivory coast. the dream act requires qualified students to go to a community college and after two years the chance to transfer to a four-year university. opponents say that takes away opportunities for maryland and out of state citizens a spot at, say, the university of maryland. >> very controversial. >> reporter: help save

maryland's bath gathered signatures to get it on the ballot. >> it will cost millions to subsidize people who have no moral or legal right to be here in maryland. >> reporter: he claims the dream act will cost schools $44,000 per student for a four- year degree on top of higher tuition for all students. >> there could be a loss of profit to the universities. some of this is offset as i had mentioned by the increase in enrollment. >> reporter: the institute on improving immigration policy says there's not enough research on the financial impact on taxpayers and on the state. >> there might be a long-term economic benefit to the state of maryland for educating students within their state. >> reporter: the politically charged issue is not stopping veronica and cindy who are inspired by their hopes for a future in america. to qualify under the dream act, a student must attend a maryland high school for three years and prove they or their parents pay taxes.

camera, good visibility. still quite dark. 6:11 or 6:14 this morning. 80 degrees. feeling like 84 with the heat index thanks to the humidity being way up there now at 76%. here's the big picture. we've got a little bit of high pressure for a change in the northern part of the country. they've pulled into the 60s. the moisture continues in the southwest. horrible fires in oak owning. all that triple ding -- in oklahoma. all that triple digit heat. in the south scattered showers and a thunderstorm extending across the northeast as well. there's a front right here just over us. showers on and off. more off than on. for the next six to 12 hours before this area starts to settle a little bit more to the south. tonight there could be a couple of showers well south of town, st. mary's county, maybe southern calvert, fredricksburg. those areas. that will be the case tomorrow as well. you will be in a better position to see those showers than we will. want to take you to the tropics quickly because we've got

5:31 with timesaver traffic. right now, howard, your biggest trouble southbound on 270 trying to get out of clarksburg and heading into germantown. a crash after father hurley boulevard but before 118. it's moved into the far right shoulder and the beginning of the transition lane to head toward 118. but again early slowdown there. you weren't expecting southbound on 270. other trouble spot in maryland is a new crash southbound 95 right between the exit for 212 and the capital beltway that ties up the left half of the roadway. careful coming into laurel and down from the icc on 95 south. virginia drivers in on 66, building volume to get into manassas and centreville briefly as you make your way inside the beltway through falls church. that's incident free. nice light volume as you head toward the roosevelt bridge northbound 95, heaviest volume is getting into quantico, your ride into dale city and past the prince william parkway and woodbridge and on to newington and springfield. light volume with no incidents reported as far as obstacles. that's good news.

buildings. hundreds of residents have been forced to flee their homes. so far no deaths have been reported but officials fear because the fire is so big, that might change. in the meantime residents in luther, oklahoma were allowed to return to their homes over the weekend after firefighters managed to control the wildfire that forced about 60 residents there to take off. many returned to their home to find ash and rubble where their houses once stood. >> when cow back to this -- when you come back to this, you see it all destroyed and everything you touch is just ash and there's not anything you can save. >> it's certainly been a tough week for the state of oklahoma. just numerous fires throughout the state. major fires, a lot of small fires. it's taxed the resources of the state of oklahoma. >> investigators say the fire in luther, oklahoma was deliberately set. they're now looking for a man in a black pickup truck who reportedly threw some newspapers out of the vehicle and then set them on fire. it is time for today's

everybody else? >> this mission, the curiosity lander is a great exciting time for nasa because this lander is going to be looking for the early signs or the early markers of the precursors to life that may exist or may have been preserved on the surface of mars. >> what exactly is goddard doing on this? i know the jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena is sort of the lead agency here. goddard has done something, some of the instruments on board? >> you're absolutely right. jet propulsion laboratory built most of the rover and was responsible for the landing and management of the mission but goddard space flight center provided the sample analysis of the mars instrument package which is one of the key components of the science laboratory lander. the instrument package is one of the key ways we're going to be looking for, the early precursors of life or markers of life on mars. >> how do you do that? how does that work? >> that's an excellent

question. the simple analysis at mars is -- i've lost my -- pardon me -- is made up of a suite of instruments. there's a mass spectrometer which measures key chemicals. it will grind them up and measure it. it also has laser instrument which looks for key isotopes of these elements. >> i understand-- >> looking for carbon, hydrogen. >> i understand the last funded add planned mission. where do you go from here? >> it's not the last planned mission. in fact, we've got maven mission which is going to mars in 2013 which is going to look at the upper atmosphere of mars. nasa also has right here at
