new gun control laws. prince george's county fire department is taking the heat for its slow response time to county emergencies. a new study shows the capital right station and riverdale heights station failed to respond to calls within a minute more than 50% of the time. the prince george's county fire department says it depends on volunteers to help answer calls but the economy has changed how many hours volunteers commit. >> as the economy gets worse and worse, folks need to work more and more, make more money. the volunteers that normally have time to spend time at the firehouse, they have to work. they don't have time to be there. we don't have the budgets to be able to put more career staffing in place. >> the chief and the union president say the new county administration has budgeted for more firefighters over the next three years. however, the chief says to meet national standards which is one and a half firefighters per 1,000 residents, it will take more than ten years. three parking lot attend

distants at smithsonian's air and space annex are now charged with stealing at least $400,000 in parking lot fees. according to a court affidavit, the trio started stealing the money in 2009. they were reportedly caught on camera unplugging the counters, the things that count vehicles as they come in so the stolen money wouldn't be missed. two women and one man were arrested saturday and are facing up to ten years in prison. this morning a member of the british military is in jail facing a list of charges. officer edmond toby barr whitehead is a second lieutenant in the navy. he was temporarily stationed at quantico for training exercises. now he's accused of vandalizing fredricksburg baptist church. he threw a closet door through a stained glass window to get out of the win church -- out of the church. they say he immediately surrendered but started

spitting and didn't stop until he was insides the patrol car. the church says it will repair the damage and whitehead said he intends to reimburse the church fully for the cost of repairs. >> it endured a lot. so this is just another incident that just like every other incident, the church has prevailed and it will prevail through this one as well. >> whitehead is charged with burglary, assault on an officer and destruction of property. 4:33 now. a total of 81 people were arrested during a prostitution sting in prince george's county. the whole thing started last wednesday. 70 of those arrests were made in 72 hours. five hotels in the college park area were targeted in this. and police say that prostitution is a gateway crime that can lead to drugs, robberies and shootings as well. our time is 4:33 of the here are some other stories making headlines this tuesday morning. attacks continue in syria. two large bombs fell on a town

in the province. this attack came on the same day as the syrian prime minister defected from president bashar aassad's government. the prime minister was appointed just two months ago. a bomb also exploded on the third floor of a syrian state television and radio building and you could see people running for cover. later this morning the manual accused of the tucson shooting that left six people dead is expected to agree to a plea deal. jared lee loughner spent more than a year at a federal mental facility in missouri treating for mental illness. a judge still needs to rule that loughner is mentally competent to understand that deal. the shooting rampage also injured a list of others including representative gabriel giffords. the mississippi church that wouldn't allow a black couple to get married in the church is now apologizing. the first baptist church of crystal springs posted a message on its website asking for forgiveness and

reconciliation to charles and andrea wilson, their families, friends and god. but the groom says the church never contacted him or his wife directly and considers the online apology as an insult. we have a few commuter alerts for you this morning. if you're on the dulles connector late at night or early in the morning be prepared to find an alternate route. that's because the eastbound lanes are going to be closed between the beltway and route 123 every night between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. this goes through thursday. just follow the detour signs to get your way around it. the latest megaproject in northern virginia gets under way later this morning. the work starts on the express lanes on interstate 95. 25 new miles of roadway will go from stafford county to the beltway and on to edsall road exit on 395. it's expected to be completed by 2014. the road situation could get a little better near the walter reed national military medical center in bethesda.

the department of defense says montgomery county will get a $40 million grant for transportation projects at walter reid. the d.o.d. says the realignment has increased personnel at walter reid by almost a third and doubled the medical center's visitors road. oreo is honoring the mars curiosity rover with an open faced cookie. normally white icing dyed red has tire tracks in it. don't expect to find it at the grocery store. it was featured as oreos daily twist campaign. still ahead fibbing may do more harm than good when it comes to your health. don't lie. we'll explain why. >> one airline -- [ inaudible ]

couple days away. wall street headed higher after the jobs news we received last week that was pretty positive. we'll have to see if the enthusiasm lasts for us yet again dacht checking the numbers -- again today. check be the numbers, the dow added 21 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq, big winner on the day, it was up 22 points. and the s&p 500 was better by more than 3. some good news if you're looking to buy a home. closing costs are going down. over the past year, the average mortgage closing costs have fallen nearly 7.5%. federal regulation put in place two years ago is part of the reason why. it requires lenders to provide a good faith estimate of third party fees within 10% of the amount that home buyers will pay. spiker, the owner of saab is suing general motors for over $3 billion. saab stopped production in may of 2011 because it couldn't pay its suppliers. spiker says g.m. deliberately bankrupted them by

high yesterday. everything else was low but the mold. the mold was the culprit. let's get you started with a look at the day planner this tuesday morning. looking at a lot of high clouds today. in fact, at times it may even feel mostly sunny out there with that thin layer of high clouds or overcast. filtered sunshine. 85 by noon. going to be another hot afternoon. high temperatures upper 80s, even 90, 91 with 88 at 5:00. there could be an isolated shower, rumble of thunder. best chance of that happening will be south of d.c. looks like we had some showers well south of us and southeastern virginia. a little closer to home we were watching some showers, even one or two lightning strikes coming out of this area of showers moving northeast past fredricksburg falling apart here. but it has redeveloped just a little bit. a dying shower here across parts of southern charles county, just south of welcome. trying to get toward faulkner. that's it on the radar this morning so it's a quiet morning. some areas very, very muggy and warm. got temps in the upper 70s from d.c. south and east but just

north of town in gaithersburg, only about 20 miles north, got 66 right now. feeling much more comfortable. winchester, hagerstown, cumberland all in the low to mid-6s on right now. -- mid-60s right now. good visibility. you're looking at wisconsin avenue looking north from northwest d.c. 78 degrees. no winds to help out. the dew points in town in the low 70s. yeah, it's very humid with the humidity at 84% this morning. bigger picture satellite and radar combined notice all the high clouds streaming up here across west virginia over us. that's blowing off these showers and storms off to the south. as we look at the future cast, the best chance of any showers and storms today will be well south of us. southern virginia here we are at noon into north carolina. this afternoon some spotty showers or an isolated thunderstorm might pop but not too bad a day. quiet tonight.

then tomorrow we're going to pop a few more showers and storms in the afternoon. going to do about the same thing on thursday afternoon. let's go to the tropics and talk about ernesto. ernesto, you can see the circulation down here. still a tropical storm but getting a little better organized. winds 65 miles an hour gusting to 75. headed toward the yucatan peninsula. north of belize city. so tulume south of cancun can take a good beating from this. this is likely to be hurricane ernesto by landfall. winds could be 80 miles an hour or higher than that. it will weaken over the yucatan. get back into the southern gulf of mexico and then it will make another landfall, maybe as a strong thunderstorm here by -- strong tropical storm here by the time we get into friday morning. stop the clock at 8:00 a.m. once it gets into the mountains of mexico, it will tear it up and lose the water as well. ernesto going to cause some problems to the south. here's a look at our forecast. today about 91. isolated shower or storm most of the day.

that she and lawless would make a $25 donation to a local farm sanctuary. they made the donation pretty quickly. that's adorable. like a little hurdler. going from goats to three little bears and they skipped the porridge and the bed. they went straight for the pool in pasadena, california. triple digit temperatures have the bears looking for a way to cool off and the two cubs played in the water while their mom watched. the homeowner says the bears looked like they were having a good time. the bear family also decided to watch the sun set in a tree at the same house. >> very nice. how far can we push the quite meter today? let's check it out. those two new cheetah cubs, there they are at the national zoo. and they have names now. you might recall the zoo planned to name them after the fastest american man and american woman. so the three-month-old cubs are now known as carmelita and
