serious overnight crash. that's going to be the case north and southbound near the exit for 207 carmel church for some hours. here's the beltway near kenilworth avenue moving freely. on the inner loop near route 5 branch avenue checking for the report of a crash. accident northbound 210 near one of the intersections of old fort road had police responding. back in virginia prince william parkway at hoadley road the westbound lane blocked with a crash. back to you. >> thank you, beverly. we're learning more about the gunman accused of killing six people at a sikh temple in wisconsin last weekend. it's looking more like he targeted his victims because of their religion. >> delia goncalves is live in the satellite center with more on the suspected killer and some of his victims. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. page left no letter indicating his exact motives. we have learned that he's been an active member of a couple of white supremacist groups since 2000. and that could be a clue. the 40-year-old joined the

military in 1992 we're told. he was never deployed overseas and was discharged just six years later for getting drunk and going awol. f.b.i. investigators believe page acted alone and had no direct ties to the sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. detectives say page used a 9 millimeter handgun to kill six worshipers inside a temple and seriously injured a responding officer before he was shot and killed by other officers. >> he was met by the suspect who basically ambushed him around his vehicle. the officer was shot eight to nine times at this incident at very close range. >> my father by engaging the shooter saved a tremendous amount of more hardship because people were able to get to cover. >> these kinds of terrible tragic events are happening with too much regularity for us not to do some soul searching and to examine additional ways that we can reduce violence.

medical center has gone from bad to worse since walter reed pofd in. the -- moved in. the department of defense is giving the county $30 million. three parking lot attendants are accused of stealing at least $400,000 in parking fees. the group worked at the parking complex at the smithsonian air and space udvar center at dulles airport. court documents allege the man and two women have been stealing the money since 2009. the affidavit says the group was filmed unplugging vehicle counters so they could pocket the parking fee. a sailor in the royal british navy is behind bars in fredricksburg, virginia now accused of vandalizing a historic chump. edmonds whitehead was arrested saturday. police found him as he threw a door through a stained glass window and climbed out of the baptist church. he had broken in by breaking a

cnn reports that it appears any lingering concerns about apple's underperformance has been replaced by excitement about new products. the iphone 5 to be unveiled and to go on sale next month. stay tuned. some good news for those looking to buy a home. closing costs are going down. over the past year the average mortgage closing costs have fallen nearly 7.5%, origination fees are down 1% while title and closing costs dropped almost 12 purposes. bankrate.com reports stricter lending standards are shrinking the pool of americans who can actually get a mortgage so banks are vying for customers and fees are going down. best buy's founders have offered to take the chain private. the chairman stepped down in june after caught up in a

morning. jared lee loughner is expected to enter a guilty plea in an arizona courtroom. he's the accused gunman in the shooting in tucson in 2011. 's charged with killing six people and then trying to kill congresswoman gabriel giffords. the white house believes rebels are gaining the upper hand in syria. government troops are stepping up their attacks on the rebels but the two-week offensive has yet to break the rebel fires. people in richmond, california are being told to stay inside and shut off their air conditioners. the blast at a refinery sent smoke and flames into the air. only one person suffered injuries from the explosion, however. 6:12. this morning we're getting a new look at curiosity's landing on mars. >> the video isn't 34u67 but still it's -- isn't much but still it's coming all the way from the red planet. >> this is low resolution video from nasa. it's 297 photographs. it shows curiosity during the final minutes of its decent on

monday -- descent on monday morning. we show you some local connections to the curiosity mission. >> reporter: hundreds of scientists and spectators gathered at nasa goddard to watch curiosity live up to its name. >> it's really just getting our curiosity as human beings, as we look at the universe and look around us, what else is out there. >> reporter: melissa is just one of the goddard scientists that spent years developing the instrument at the core of curiosity's mission. >> sam is analysis at mars. it's basically the chemical laboratory that is on the curiosity rover. >> reporter: the sam instrument is one of the main reasons that curiosity is so different from previous mars rovers. spirit and opportunity could only look at the soil, but curiosity can actually dig in and take real soil samples. >> spirit and opportunity,

those rovers were geologists. so now what curiosity is, it's much more of a geochemist. it has the ability to scoop up the rocks, take them in and break them down. >> reporter: breaking down the individual elements in the soil. to do it it takes serious sensors developed by atk, which is headquartered in arlington. >> atk was responsible for helping to develop the suite of sensors that will look at the samples collected by the robot arm. >> reporter: together sam and her sensors will have two years to try to find carbon based organic molecules, evidence that life could have existed on the red planet. >> now the actual real adventure begins now that we're safely on the surface. >> reporter: in greenbelt, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> scientists and engineers behind this mission are getting a lot of credit for their work, but there's one who's a standout and he's become an internet sensation in just 24 hours. and it's because of his hair. check out the mohawk with martian red highlights.

lunch time. actual highs upper 80s to even 91 is what i'm expecting in washington as winds go southeast 5 to 10. there could be an isolated shower or thunderstorm before the day is out. temperatures this morning in pennsylvania, upper 50s to low 60s. some of that is filtered into northern maryland, western maryland, eastern west virginia. we are still up in the 70s here in washington, especially south and east. 74 andrews. we've got 70 in rockville. there's a 65 in lovettsville. that's pretty comfortable. 69 haymarket and reston but a little bit sticky and 75 in alexandria. outside on our michael & son weather camera, we're in tysons corner right now. you're happening at the high thin -- you're looking at the high thin clouds. 78 degrees. at reagan national with the humidity at 81%, makes it feel like it's already 80. the winds have been variable north, north west at 5. the boundary for the most part is off to the south. the clouds are blowing off the showers here up and over us. a little bit thicker out to the west. don't be surprised at times

it's an overcast. other times it may appear to be a good deal of sunshine through the high thin clouds that will be streaming over us at times during the day today with just an isolated shower popping up this afternoon. i think that will be the case again on wednesday as well. by friday, though, that's when we'll have a better chance of showers and storms. want to talk about ernesto which is gaining some strength here. still a tropical storm. look at the darker colors. those are the taller, colder thunderstorm cloud tops we're seeing on this color enhanced satellite. that means a stronger storm, 65 mile an hour sustained winds. pressure is dropping right now and it's moving off toward the west, north west likely to be a hurricane later today making land fall sometime late tonight, early tomorrow morning north of belize city. maybe tulume might be in about trouble from this. for us we are dealing with some heat and humidity again. high around 91, isolated storm this afternoon. 75 tonight for d.c. about 70 in the suburbs with 92 tomorrow,

chance for an afternoon storm. 94 thursday, chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. then friday a better chance of storms. some could be strong 89 before somewhat milder temperatures over the weekend. 6:17. beverly farmer, take it away. drive right now along the 95 corridor some volume building in woodbridge getting into lorton and newington. 395 to get up past the beltway edsall road it's just been volume. lanes open. i-95 between fredricksburg and the exits for richmond we're in much better shape. some traffic gets by each way between thornberg and lady smith near carmel church. still a slow go but at least you're getting by on the interstate. 66 you can get by now falls church into ballston but still trying to recovery. an earlier wreck has been moved to the left shoulder. remember the hov rules kick in at 6:30 inside the beltway so that doesn't help folks there. if you're traveling the maryland beltway crash on the inner loop near branch avenue has been moved out of the way

talk to the king of jordan about syria. he's back in new york now with a preview of his interview. good morning. >> good morning. only on cbs this morning, jordan's king abdullah on the scenarios that could play out in syria. i asked the king about the options for syria's president and this concern about chemical weapons and the search for a solution to the crisis. we'll have that and more when we see you at 7:00. >> charlie, did he mention in your interview would he thought it would take to get more western nations involved in this conflict? a lot of people don't want to weigh in on the civil war but seems like we're headed in that direction. >> i think what he did -- he did not specifically address the question what it will do to get to them because he thinks the ball is in their court. he clearly is concerned about what follows after assad goes. i think most people believe that i talked to there. and he believes that this thing will play it out certainly by the end of the year. but he also said that syria's

killed at a sunday shooting in wisconsin. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with their reaction to this tragedy. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we spoke to several of hem, members of the sikh -- of them, members of the sikh community at a temple in silver spring, many telling us this terrible tragedy brings back some really bad memories of the days post- 9/11. investigators say the 40-year- old suspect left no letters indicating a motive for the temple shooting in wisconsin but he was an active member of a white supremacist group. detectives say he acted alone and had no ties to the wisconsin temple where he shot a police officer at least eight times at close range and walked indoors and killed six worshipers. the pain felt all over the country and here at home within washington's close-knit sikh community. >> we do not know what the motive ever the assailant was but the fact is that he singled out the six -- especially the six with the turbines on. >> we went through this 9/11

where the first person who got killed after the 9/11 was a sikh itself, mistaken identity. >> this is my homeland, my home. my children are born here. my brothers and sisters are here, everybody. >> it's important for us not to put the blame on any one person or group of people. it's to educate one another about who we are, where we're from and what we do. >> reporter: investigators believe the suspect's ties to white supremacist bands could have led him to the violence. we discovered the bands are backed by a maryland-based label in lithicum, maryland near bwi. the label representatives released a statement shortly after we knocked on the doors for comment saying they do not condone the violence and have removed all images of page from its website. the suspect, the 40-year-old suspect was shot and killed by police officers in ways. -- in wisconsin. back to you. >> delia goncalves with that live update from our satellite center this morning.

a university of maryland student accused of making threats is expected to plead guilty today. police seder der song posted multiple -- say alexander song posted multiple threats online. he wrote he wanted to go on a shooting rampage. he was arrested last march after other internet users reported the threat. police say they didn't find any weapons in his dorm room or at his parents' home. we are still three months away from the presidential election and the rhetoric is starting to heat up now. president obama spoke at a fund- raiser last night in connecticut and he offered this criticism of mitt romney's economic plans. >> he'd ask the middle class to pay more in taxes so he could give another $250,000 tax cut to people making more than $3 million a year. it's like robin hood in reverse. it's romney hood. >> the president said rosm

still 88 at 5:00 p.m., high of about 91. with the lower humidity levels we've seen temperatures drop just a touch. mid- to upper 60s in the northern shenandoah valley. south of town toward orange, a touch of fog down there with 75 in fredericksburg the easton is 75. here in washington a sticky 78 degrees. outside on our michael & son weather camera, you can see lots of the high clouds i'm talking about here in tysons corner looking off toward the east with 78. that dew point, though, still above 70 so feel feeling tropical. humidity 81%. the feels like temperature at 80. high clouds streaming in from the southwest to the northeast. the upper level winds are moving in that direction with most of the rain along i-40 well south of us in north carolina, we will see some showers in southeastern virginia today, even through lunch time. around here we'll have a pop-up shower or two. it really looks like 98, 99% of us won't even be bothered by this. as we head toward tomorrow morning, still looking at the

showers south. we'll see a few showers start to pop especially in the mountains but can't rule out the isolated storm around here. watching ernesto in the tropics, this thing is getting stronger. you can see the center of circulation, we color enhanced the cloud tops otherwise we can't see it if we don't use the infrared sensors so the coldest ones show up darkest. you can clearly how they're starting to wrap around a center here. that could become a hurricane later today. and hurricane warnings are up in the yucatan because it looks like by late tonight, early tomorrow morning we could have a land falling hurricane maybe toward tulum, the yucatan coast. so belize would be spairped the brunt of this but -- spared the brunt of this but mexico will get it. south of cancun and cozumel will get hit later tonight. here's the forecast. 91. isolated shower or storm. tonight 75 with a high tomorrow 92. chance of afternoon storms. so yellow alerts wednesday and

here's a check of the news before you go. people going to the howard county fair are being told to wash their hands often after checking out the livestock. about a dozen cases of swine flu have popped up around the country and the illnesses have been linked to public contact with pigs at county and state fairs. work on the reflecting pool at the lincoln memorial is nearly finished. it's been closed since 2010 for a $34 million reconstruction. "the washington post" reports crews are going to refill the pool over the next few weeks. the astros made two errors on an 11th inning funk. d.c. tops houston 5-4. the nationals are now 17-9 since the all-star break. cbs this morning begins at the top of the hour. they'll talk with senator joe lieberman on his upcoming retirement and his thoughts of the presidential race. before that we'll have one more check of traffic and weather so stay with 9news now. i got the chance to start my own business.

i know what it's like to hire people and to make ends meet. from those experiences, i had the chance of running the olympics. the games were in real trouble. there'd been way too much spending. and in massachusetts i found a budget that was badly out of balance. our legislature was 85% democrat. and every one of the four years i was governor, we balanced the budget. i want to use those experiences to help americans have a better future. we believe in our future. we believe in ourselves. we believe the greatest days of america are ahead. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.
