we're seeing a lot of clouds streaming up from the southwest over us once again. the moon was dimly visible a little while ago but going to take a while for us to break this. with the daytime heat, the humidity which is definitely in place, that's where we could pop a shower or storm. 73 in manassas at this hour, 61. much more pleasant in cumberland, maryland while a sticky 78 if annapolis. high temps will be in the upper 80s to low 90s. let's check in with beverly farmer in for monika with a look at timesaver traffic. busy on the beltway and route 50 in maryland. we've got a live shot from sky 9, the crash ha happened on the outer loop of -- that happened on the outer loop of the beltway. it wasn't just an accident. one of the vehicles caught fire. equipment blocking all but the left lane on the outer loop northbound beltway now coming up out of landover and into greenbelt. be prepared for those delays now. ahead of those folks on the outer loop near the greenbelt metro past kenilworth avenue, there's another crash on the shoulder on the inner loop close to the bw parkway a minor

crash moved out of the roadway so it's complicating that whole stretch. on the outer loop of the beltway south of route 50 coming out of landover heading toward the scene of this crash, may see building volume delays on the right side of your screen. if you're west on 50 out of annapolis on bowie, the crash at 301 moved quickly on to the shoulder. no one hurt so the fire department moved on. on 50 inside the beltway and 202 is about where you hit the brakes to get to kenilworth and new york avenues. virginia drivers not as complicated unless you're traveling in through loudoun county. there's a crash on eastbound 7 before snickers turnpike. eastbound lanes are blocked. good shape in falls church even as we get closer to the hov rules. your next timesaver traffic at 6:11. >> thank i, beverly. new this morning -- thank you, beverly. new this morning maryland's government releases his plans to pull a full scale casino in prince george's county. he released the plan and wants to grant the county the sixth gaming casino in the state.

you would start seeing slot machines next year. under the governor's plan the prince george's county casino would open by 2016. he'll officially introduce the plan tomorrow when a special session begins in annapolis. the owners of rosecroft raceway says if the casino doesn't go at the racetrack, it will have to close down. the track announced tuesday it will keep live racing going for at least two more years. just the name pepco can send people into fits of rage. six weeks after the derecho moved through. >> now customers are getting their say on the power company's response to the outages. two days of hearings began last night. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with the story. good morning you to, delia. >> reporter: good morning, jess. you know how the meetings go. they can drag on forever and be snoozers but not last knit's meeting. it was -- last night's meeting. it was very lively to say the least. a lot of the customers who showed up did not bite their tongues and didn't hold back.

>> my comments are directed at the butcher of montgomery county. >> reporter: that prompted a couple of smirks there. more that 200 people attended last night's meeting, many furious about pepco's performance during the derecho that left thousands in our area in the dark and without air conditioning in sweltering conditions for nearly a full week. pepco says it continues to improve its reliability following its five-year plan but customers say they are not seeing those changes fast enough. >> my wife grew up in the former soviet union. they had communism but they had power. it's badly built, badly regulated and it's not working. >> we had neighborhoods of over 1,000 residential units that were out from friday night till the following friday afternoon and this is all underground. >> reporter: some humor but some serious faces there and some serious issues and concerns as folks were still

pretty angry over what they had to deal with during the derecho. d.c.'s public service commission, we do have one here in d.c. that psc is also reviewing the performance of pepco during the derecho and is scheduled to have some public hearings themselves before they consider a rate hike proposal. that's right. those two terrible words "rate hike." i'll have much more on a proposed rate hike for maryland coming up at 6:30. back to you, andrea, jessica. >> thank you, delia. definitely some fireworks. delia goncalves live in our satellite center this morning. check this out from last night. see it there on your screen. that is a water spout seen along the patuxent river in calvert county, maryland. this was spotted near the community of benedict. fortunately no one was hurt and the water spout never came on land to become a tornado. very cool. an arlington investigator

is trying to find out what's behind two suspicious deaths. the bodies of carl moten and keafe spriggs were found yesterday in their apartment on north culpeper street. detectives are not yet calling this a homicide investigate but they do say the deaths are suspicious. >> two bodies were discovered in the front living room area of the residence. there was blood discovered on scene. we are continuing the investigation at this time. >> investigators are looking to interview witnesses so if you saw anything, you're asked to call arlington county police. the time right now is 6:05. i am watching your money. the amount of money flowing into new companies this year has been dropping around the nation. with venture capital investments down 12% at last count. but the d.c. region has been holding steady. start-ups in maryland, d.c. and virginia hauled in $206

million. one start-up attracting money and attention addresses a long time social problem. ever walk into a wedding reception or party without knowing anyone else in the room? >> reporter: for don inspiration came from attending a wedding. >> i wanted to see where the cute girls were because i didn't know where anybody else was going to be. it was a destination wedding. i thought it would be call if i saw a seating before the #wedding. >> reporter: that led to event planning. >> i do everything from the floor plans and seating charts. we let guests interact with each other before and after based on where they're seating. >> reporter: that's what put social on the table. the platform draws data about guests from their social networks like facebook. planners can seat people with common interests together hopefully trading awkwardize -- [indiscernible] planners can publish a guest list before the event to get a head start on the getting to know you process.

for those who feel that's too much information too soon, there's the option to publish the list after the party, too, which he says more people seem to be opting for even though he sees online and offline worlds merging. >> nowadays our online is the same as our real tief identity. we need bridges between the two identities because the fact that we spend so much time online. >> reporter: meaning as more people get more social, all that time online could potentially turn into more face time. >> social table does have competition. an app called -- [indiscernible] -- allows couples to invite wedding guests over facebook and lets you see any guests who are single. other popular wedding tool websites including wedding wire though they do not currently offer a social component. i like this idea of being able to know who you're sitting with, know a little bit about them. >> i just went to a wedding and didn't know anybody at the table and it was fun getting to know people, too. it was really interesting. like we said, there's one for

everything. we all live with those red light cameras and speed cameras. now one montgomery county community is talking about a stop sign camera. this is live look from glen echo, maryland. the washington examiner reports town leaders want a camera at oxford road and university avenue right at the park. the town's mayor says too many people just roll through that stop sign without actually stopping. she estimates it 160,000 cars fail to stop there each year. any stop sign cameras would have to be approved by the state legislature. >> wow. the time 16:08. if -- is 6:08. in four minutes we hit the campaign trail. we virginia v.a.'s governor and whether he will be on the ticket with mitt romney. >> we'll be right back.

once again we've got some high clouds streeping across the region. at -- streaming across the region. at times it will be mostly cloudy. we could see showers or storms. any of those could be on the hefty side. upper 80s to low 90s for highs. traffic getting a lot more complicated out of landover heading into greenbelt. we've got a crash and car fire. the outer loop north of 450 before the baltimore-washington parkway. right now two lanes able to get by to the left but the cleanup

there, the outer loop delays to head toward greenbelt, crash on the inner loop in greenbelt now reported in bethesda on the outer loop near 355. details coming up in the next timesaver traffic at 6:17. jessica, back to you. president obama hits the key swing state of colorado today. he's heading to grand junction. >> carrying washington tuesday, he slammed the house for not passing a farm bill, especially with the severe drought we're in. >> congress needs to pass a farm bill that will not only provide relief but also make necessary reforms and give farmers the certainty that they deserve. that's the single best way that we can help rural communities both in the short term but also in the long term. >> the president added he'll use his executive powers to help farmers nationwide. presumptive republican nominee mitt romney spent tuesday in illinois. he toured a manufacturing facility outside chicago and

went after the president's economic policies. >> he said he was going to help create more jobs and in fact he said if we pass this stimulus, that we would never see unemployment go above 8%. instead it's been above 8% for the last 42 months. the republican national convention is at the end of this month. mitt romney will announce his running mate before then. >> virginia's governor is on the short list. peggy fox talked with governor bob mcdonald to get his take. >> reporter: governor bob mcdonnell continued to keep mum about any possibility mitt romney would pick him to be his running mate. >> at love people are rooting for you to be the vice presidential nominee. what do you say? >> that's completely up to mitt romney. he'll be here saturday. i'm be campaigning with him. my job is to help him win virginia. >> reporter: romney's decision

will be the biggest of his campaign. he may choose someone from one of the swing states like ohio, north carolina or virginia. >> i think governor mcdonnell would be an excellent choice. wee bring with him a swing state that both parties need to win to pick up the presidency. he's a good strong conservative republican leader. >> reporter: romney begins a bus tour through swing states on saturday beginning in virginia where governor mcdonnell will be by his side. for quite a while it looked like governor mcdonnell was nearly a shoo-in to be the vice presidential candidate even before mitt romney took the spotlight, but then some things happened down in richmond that may have blown his chances. >> i like bob personally but i think wee have a tough time on the national ticket explaining some of the extreme measures that came out of his general assembly with his party in control this last session, including especially the assault on women's reproductive rights. >> reporter: representative jerry connolly says collecting mcdonnell would be a gift to the democratic party.

shower or storm. a little bit more sun likely this afternoon than this morning. tonight quieter. then tomorrow we're going to pop some more showers and storms in the afternoon in the mountains first and then we'll see how much of these could make it toward the metro for the later afternoon. some of the storms tomorrow could also have some locally heavy downpours. then friday looks to be the most active weather day as we'll have a front approaching so some storms friday could be on the strong side. we'll be watching all of this. ernesto by the way down to a tropical storm over the yucatan now. it will likely be a hurricane again before striking the veracruz tomorrow into tomorrow night into friday. hot, 92 today. the isolated storm. tonight only in the 70s again. 94 tomorrow with the afternoon storms. so with the storm threat, got to -- going to have the yellow alerts up all three days. friday upper #s on to near 90. a more -- 80s to near 90. a more active friday. the storms could linger friday night into saturday morning before clearing. sunday looks good.

highs in the mid-80s. let's check in with beverly farmer at 6:17. she has timesaver traffic. not going to save any time if you have to drive the beltway in maryland. i'm talking the outer loop between landover and bethesda. there's been a series of four separate crashes. outer loop of the beltway at route 50 in the slow traffic heading up past the exit for 450 new carrollton before the bw parkway. there was a crash and car fire. two right lanes are now blocked with the cleanup and recovery. two getting by to the left on the outer loop near the greenbelt metro crash cleared out of your way. on the outer loop of beltway heading west on connecticut avenue, there have been two separate questions -- separate crashes. only one lane getting by given how slow things are -- well, not moving. on the inner loop in green beth there was a crash near the parkway pulled out of the way. virginia drivers not so much drama for you on 66, on 95. only building volume. as you make your way northbound heading into springfield and on

captain aly raisman has her second gold. now to track and field and the men's high jump. eric cunard from ohio going for an olympic record. he just fails to clear the bar. he will take home silver. a russian jumper would get the gold. just a few days left to the london olympics. here's a look at the medal count. china remains on top with 23 medals overall. team u.s.a. has 70. 30 of them gold. great britain is now back in third place. the nationals have the best record in baseball. they're playing the astros who have the worst record in baseball but houston making d.c. work for it. last night it was tied 2-2 in the 12th inning. 12th inning. danny es opinion espinoza at the plate. he sneaks the ball into the end field. nats lead 3-2. the astros had two on with two out in the

we are back at 6:29 with some breaking news that will affect your commute. this is sky 9 over the outer loop just past connecticut avenue in pennsylvania. a crash involving a truck and a car has three lanes closed. just the left lane is getting by. in a moment beverly farmer tells us about the backups.

that pops could be on the heavy side. had some heavy, heavy downpours yesterday in southern maryland. this morning some storms along the senator from rehoboth up toward cape may seeing some thunderstorms there. but around here just muggy and cloudy. 778 in annapolis to -- 78 in annapolis to 67 in frederick. it's a little drier up north but still on the humid side. hagerstown 69. highs this afternoon from the upper 80s to the low 90s. again about 92 here in d.c. let's check in with beverly farmer, 6:31. we just saw the three lanes closed on the utter loop by connecticut -- outer loop by connecticut. not pretty at all. a crash involving a dump truck and a couple other vehicles on the outer loop west of the exit for connecticut avenue but before you get to 270 and the rockville pike. one lane still scweezing by to the left. the delays heading through silver spring and eventually back to college park. you can see some of that backup on the outer loop and not to mention look at inner loop. just rubber necking past the

scene out of bethesda toward silver spring. the outer loop delays before colesville now. looks like closer to new hampshire avenue on the outer loop of the beltway and we've got problems for the folks that are trying to come up from andrews into landover and greenbelt, too. there are two crashes each way near the baltimore-washington parkway. outer loop near new carrollton before the parkway still the right half of the roadway blocked. and the inner loop college bark into greenbelt still had two lanes blocked. 450 -- [indiscernible] there had been a vehicle rollover there. virginia you haven't had any of the big issues. one crash virginia's eastbound 7 trying to make your way into leesburg near snickersville turn pieng. you'll get -- turnpike. i'm get around that back to you. >> thanks, beverly. speaking of virginia the commonwealth will be a key swing state in the presidential election this november. so which way are virginia voters leaning? our partner at cbs have a new

survey out. gayle king of cbs this morning joins us with a look at that. good morning, gayle. >> that is the question, andrea and jessica, which way is virginia leading. bob schieffer is joining us this morning to look at where the presidential race stands in the key swing states. the latest poll shows president obama with a four-point lead in virginia. we'll look at the other swing states and break down the final 90 days of the campaign. plus, a dispute between the nypd and twitter after threats of mass murder appear on the social net working site. the debate that pits terrorism and security against privacy and ee speech. wee talking about that, see yo >> interesting dilemma. thank you, gayle. we'll be watching. >> i'll see you. last night nearly a thousand people of various faiths held a candlelight vigil in rockville. they gathered to kill for the six people killed at a shooting

in wisconsin. many in the sikh community were moved by the huge show of support. >> i really liked the fact it was very integrated. a lot of people from the outside were here. it gives me hope that america is on its way to kind of becoming more unified with its minorities. it gives me a lot of respect. >> members of the sikh community say they've faced increased discrimination and mistaken identity following the september 11 attacks. u.s. attorney general eric holder is urging the f.b.i. to collect data on height claims against the sikh -- crimes against the sikh -- date to on hate crimes against the sikh community. people got a chance last night to speak out against pepco on how it handled this summer's outages. you can bet they had a lot to say. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with some of the things they did say. good morning, delia. >> reporter: some of the things we could probably air on television that they said. certainly these folks were

fired up. this was a very lively meeting. you would say there was a little humor but a whole lot of anger. the psc was certainly not exempt from feeling the heat. >> fix it soon but not on the backs of our ratepayers. >> reporter: 200 people attended last night's meeting in montgomery county. many of them upset of course at pepco but they were blaming the psc as well. the maryland public service commission finalled pepco $1 million last -- fined pepco $1 million last year for its unreliability but many say that was simply not enough. pepco has launched a $110 million plan to improve service but continues to ask for rate hikes. the psc one month ago just granted pepco an $18 million rate hike instead of its requested $68 million but we're told the power company is not satisfied and they we don't know how much more money they want, we know they want more money from their customers.

>> you are buying their promises. you are giving in to their lies. you do not question them. but you give in constantly. >> instead of fining pepco for below acceptable levels of service, you have rewarded them year after year after year for failing to maintain the power fourths in our community -- infrastructures in our communities. >> reporter: if you have something to say, you can head over to pg community college tonight at 7:00 in the rennie forum, prince george's community college. it's on largo road in largo, another public service commission hearing. no doubt that will be just as lively as last night. d.c.'s public service commission, they're also reviewing pepco's performance during the derecho and we're told they should have some public hearings as well before they consider a rate hike that could boost your bill $5. so we'll have much more information on that when we do

get a sced dprawl from -- schedule from d.c. back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves reporting live from our satellite center this morning. what would you say if you could tell pepco exactly what you think about its response to the june derecho? let us know on our facebook page. like us and then post your comments to our timeline and join the conversation. it should be a lively one. three u.s. airways jets came too close for comfort south of national airport last week. so the faa is making a policy change even though it wouldn't have prevented this incident. it is implementing a nationwide ban on two-way plane traffic. that means planes will not be allowed to fly in opposite directions as they take off and land. a u.s. airways express jet landing at national was flying when two other planes were taking off. but that was mostly because of miscommunication between the national tower and the radar facility in warrenton. five people were hurt in

the metro escalator accident during tuesday morning's commute. it happened at the l'enfant plaza station. metro is investigating whammed. one escalator expert says it is possible that a worker forgot to screw down the metal panel. at 6:36 a health alert. cholesterol levels in children are down. a new government study found a 28% decline of high cholesterol in children 6 to 19 years of age, even though obesity rates stayed the same. some experts credited a cut in trans fats. it's been removed out of most products we've used over the last few years. since it was cut only one in 12 children have high cholesterol. that's down from one in nine in 2002. obese people with type 2 diabetes actually have a better chance of living longer than those at a normal weight. researchers from northwestern university say it's because obese people have a higher body mass index. they found patients with a normal bmi are twice as likely

to die from any cause over a 10 to 30-year period when compared to an obese patient. and more americans are getting up and walking. a study for the center for disease control and prevention says 62% of people walked at least 10 minutes a day in 2010. that's up 6% from 2005. but doctors say there's still room for improvement. they recommend at least two and a half hours of exercise a week. >> i wish i could fit that into the schedule. trying. the time right now is 6:39. howard says it's going to be mostly cloudy today and there could be a shower. >> the highs will still be around 90, though. ahead a weekend forecast we think you're going to like. >> but first, we note the passing of marvin hamlisch. he won an oscar for adapting scott joplin's rag time music.

not just between two political parties, or even two people. it's a choice between two very different plans for our country. governor romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. roll back regulations on big banks. and he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. but you know what? we tried that top down approach. it's what caused the mess in the first place. i believe the only way to create an economy built to last is to strengthen the middle class. asking the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way. so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing, and home-grown american energy for good middle class jobs. sometimes politics can seem very small. but the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger.

humidity is up to 88%. and winds have been variable currently east, northeast at 7 miles an hour. our futurecast showing the clouds thinning a little more this afternoon. but also the spotty nature of the showers, especially south and east of town. tonight quiet. tomorrow, though, we're going to pop more afternoon showers and thunderstorms. you see them more widespread. then on friday a front is going to approach late. so out ahead of it we'll see some showers and storms here for the afternoon and evening hours. i think some of that is going to linger into friday night and early saturday morning before seeing some better weather move in for the afternoon hours on saturday. look at the storm here by friday toward hagerstown. ernesto was a hurricane now a tropical storm. still 70 mile an hour winds. it will become a hurricane again and make its way toward maybe veracruz. 92 today. an isolated storm. could have a heavy downpour. 70s for the most part tonight. another sticky night.
