. we begin with breaking news. a fire that ripped through a prince george's county house today has now taken a life. fire officials confirm a 5-year-old girl who was rescued from the burning home has nonetheless died. that fire broke out about 4:30 this afternoon in the 6300-block of carington court. that's where we find ken. >> reporter: what a

heart-breaking story this one is. the 5-year-old girl is one of three people that had to be rescued from this house that was on fire. you can see investigators still inside there right now combing through what's left, looking for clues. trying to figure out what caused this in the first place. the other two that were inside were her 24-year-old father and her 15-year-old teen uncle. both of them tonight are said to be in critical condition. >> for something like this to happen is eating me up. >> reporter: this man grew up in the house that now sits chared and in ruins. his cousins are the victims. >> i just feel real bad. i really do. >> reporter: sadly late wednesday evening pre george's county officials confirmed the 5-year-old girl who was pulled out of the house died. her father and teenage uncle were still listed in critical condition. firefighters were met with heavy smoke and large flames shooting out of the two story duplex when

they got here. >> i am so sad. i saw fire coming from the side of the house so i started screaming help. >> reporter: both the girl and her teen uncle were pulled from second floor windows according to rescuers. they were described as being unconscious and paramedics immediately started cpr on them. neighbors looked on in disbelief. >> if they hadn't have heard me screaming for somebody to come help, they wouldn't have known. >> reporter: and we're told the 5-year-old's grandmother also came out here to the scene. she collapsed after witnessing what was happening. she was overcome with emotion. we're being told by fire officials the grandmother was taken to a local hospital where she's expected to be okay but investigators are out here tonight trying to figure out what caused this fire in the first place. we're live in chapel oaks, ken molestina, 9news now. new at 11:00, an investigation. this afternoon officers knocked on the door of a home in the

6100-block of kenworth avenue. they were on a call about someone who was concerned about the man inside. the cops got no response so they forced their way in and once there they found a body of a man in his 40s dead from multiple gunshot wounds. detectives are not releasing any other details tonight. a takoma park now now facing a slew of charges from prostitution to human trafficking. they charged him with picking up hispanic woman and then dropping them off to work as hookers. some of the women are in the states illegally and are working off to pay off their debts. the susan g. komen top executives to avoid resigning. there was a decision to stop screening funding. the group later reversed that

decision. out on the campaign trail, cbs news has some new poll results with some surprising findings and the unsurprising conclusion that this presidential race could go either way. gary nurenberg is here to turn the numbers into another language that we can understand and tell us about the surprises in virginia. gary. >> well, derek, there is a big gender gap in virginia with the president ahead by 14 points among women and mitt romney ahead by five points among men. cbs news thinks with 90 days to go in the race for the 270 elect ral votes needed to -- electoral wins are leaning obama. with 11 states and their 135 electoral votes up for grabs. new poll results wednesday show the president leading in virginia by four, 49-45 and leading by six in wisconsin 51-45. with mr. romney leading in

colorado 50-45. but check the gender gap. among men, romney leads obama substantially in those states 50-45 in virginia. 53-43 in wisconsin. and a 17 point lead, 56-49 in colorado. nationally, the president leads among women. and focused on the voters in a wednesday appearance in colorado. >> when it comes to a woman's right to make her own health care choices, they want to take us back to the policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st century. >> reporter: mitt romney was also on the campaign trail today targeting remarks neither towards men nor women and talking about obama administration welfare policies. there's another new poll today. it concludes that most voters have made up their minds with no more than 10% saying they are undecided or could change their minds. derek. >> like you said, down to the wire, gary. meantime, we don't know yet who is romney going to pick as

to create their own art. here is matt jablow. >> i'm having the time of my life. and this feels like important work. >> reporter: for the past 15 months, artist chris demerest has been working at arlington national cemetery. >> i come here six days a week. >> reporter: on a project entitlemented the greatest -- entitled the greatest generation. a detailed look at the men and women that served in world war ii. >> for me it has more meaning doing something about people. >> reporter: he said the exhibit which he's doing for free began in part as a loving tribute to his father, a world war ii veteran who is buried at arlg tonl. >> it seemed like the -- arlington. >> it seemed like the right thing to do. >> reporter: it far surpassed even his own expectations, largely because of a 6-year-old girl. >> this is the drawing that started it all. >> reporter: you see, soon after he started the project, that 6-year-old was with her parents here at arlington watching him paint. >> i finally turned to her and said do you want to draw. >> reporter: he said the girl

seemed a little bored so he offered her a pencil and paper and when she was finished he taped one of her pictures on then what was an empty wall next to his work station and soon thereafter went on vacation for a week. >> and i left some material here and added a note feel free to add to the wall. >> reporter: when he got back, that once empty wall was literally covered with all kinds of pictures and messages to u.s. troops past and present from people of every age and from all over the country who would stop by the exhibit when he was gone. >> it's spreading. >> reporter: he said the pictures and messages have kept oncoming. and so far about 500 people have contributed to what he now calls the wall of thanks. >> tributes to people who have died. >> reporter: a wall that he says turned an incredibly rewarding project into perhaps the most rewarding of his career. >> no question. no question. yes. this has been amazing. >> reporter: the artwork and all of the messages will be on display through september at the

women and military service memorial at arlington national cemetery. after that, he is hoping to take the exhibit on a nationwide tour. derek. >> thank you, matt. well, new pictures tonight from the mars rover curiosity. now, these amazing snapshots give us a magnificent view of the red planet's krater. now, another shot captures actually part of the curiosity. you can see the shadow of its robotic on there with the image. most of the photos so far are low resolution thumb nails. nasa says we'll get some more high resolution images and color versions very soon. tonight there is outrage at least in some quarters over reports that the tiny maryland town of glenn echo would like to install cameras to give out tickets because drivers routinely ignore the stop sign, so why are some of us upset about it. tonight i think i have an answer, but you may not like it. the charge is good old fashion

driver hypocrisy. i'm going to be arguing for the prosecution. we all claim to want the rules of the road enforced, but then we say to ourselves, hey, i almost stopped at that stop sign. i looked both ways. surely i don't deserve an automatic ticket. and that light was yellow. i swear. yes. whatever. look, i'm out on the gw park wear early monday morning before rush hour. traffic was at warped speed. 70 miles an hour. the speed limit is 50. but if you are taking a poll, i bet most of the drivers would have harsh words for anybody that went 20 miles over the limit. how dare they put us all in danger. but that morning they just had somewhere to be, right. what nobody wants to acknowledge or admit that as americans, not all of them, but a lot of us figure it's our birth right to drive like we want to drive and we'll take our chances on getting busted. except with the speed rams and red light cameras, getting busted becomes almost a guarantee. it's like having grandma back

combined, here is what we're hanging our hat on, if you will. a cold front out in the midwest, and this is fairly close to us, but it's not going to get to us until friday. and we think as it rolls through on friday, it may give us a pretty good chance of severe weather. we'll keep you posted on that. there are showers dying out into western maryland and west virginia. they're not going to make it over the divide. it looks like a dry commute tomorrow. just some clouds and just kind of humid. a little closer view of some showers. they have weakened considerably just in the last hour. headlines then, another humid day tomorrow. no doubt about that. hotter on thursday than it was today. we're talking mid 90s tomorrow. isolated storms tomorrow. some of which could be heavy. but the main event may be friday. severe storms are possible friday and we will certainly keep you posted on that. so overnight looks like this, partly cloudy, muggy, low 68-76. most areas will hold in the 70s tonight. certainly inside the beltway and downtown. now, tomorrow morning partly

orioles going for the sweep tonight in seattle. in the 4th mark reynolds makes it 5-0 birds with this shot to right. and then just two batters later, nick markakis goes yard as well. birds sweep the mariners 9-2 the final. all right. the much anticipated and talked about debut of robert griffin iii is almost here. i know derek is excited. tomorrow night the qb will make a debut in a game. he's only going to play a couple of series and considering the amount of injuries on the offensive line, that's a good thing. less chance for injury. kyle shanahan hopes rgiii simply enjoys the experience. >> i just hope he goes out there and has fun. we're going to go out there and hopefully try no not put too much pressure on him. gives a chance to give everybody the ball. but hope he can go out there and have some fun and go against the defense that he hasn't seen. >> it's going to be fun.
