way into what caused a fire that killed a 5-year-old girl and left her father and uncle with serious injuries. >> firefighters had to pull the girl and uncle out of the burning duplex. geel deal is live -- delia goncalves is live at washington hospital center with more this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's a pretty sad story. firefighters were devastated after some really valiant efforts to try to save these young people. they did end up losing unfortunately that 5-year-old girl. we tell you the girl's 24-year- old dad and 15-year-old uncle are here at washington hospital center inside the burn unit receiving treatment at this hour. they suffered severe smoke inhalation we're told. flames broke out in the capitol heights duplex around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. when firefighters arrived at the 6300 block of carrington court, they found the 24-year- old father in the front yard telling crews that two children were trapped inside the home.

both kids were pulled from the fire and were unconscious without a pulse but paramedics worked very hard and were able to revive both children. sadly we know the 5-year-old never made it. she passed later that night. >> good family. family, three kids. i mean, just an average american family. just to come home to this? this is too much. i need to find my family. >> i had walked outside to go to the store. fire was coming from the side of the house. so i started screaming "help! " >> reporter: you could hear the panic it caused to many neighbors in that area. imagine what relatives were feeling like. we have a sound from one relative coming up at 5:30 who got a frantic phone call from his mother who nearly was hysterical because her family members were trapped inside

that story. we'll have that side of the story coming up in a half-hour. back to you. >> delia goncalves from the washington hospital center. we'll keep updated you on this story. prince george's county police are investigating the murder of a 40-year-old man after getting calls yesterday asking for a check on the man's welfare. officers went to his home in the 6200 block of kenilworth avenue. they forced their way in when no one answered. inside they found the man's body. he had been shot several times. detectives are trying to identify possible suspects and a motive. they have not yet released the victim's name. a takoma park man is facing charges of prostitution and human trafficking. investigators charged freddy leguisamon. police say some of the women came to the country illegally.

regulators hear more discontent from pepco customers. they heard from customers in largo, maryland. the psc is taking comments about the electric company's response after the derecho storm. 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> here's jessica. >> after wall street investor focus turns yet again to the job market, something everybody is concerned about, the headliner on today's economic calendar, the labor department releases its weekly jobless claims. this comes after some recent -- [indiscernible] the dow starts this morning at 13,175 after adding 7 points but we saw a reversal on the nasdaq. it dipped by four and the s&p 500 was pretty much flat on the day. some changes may be coming to google search engine.

that come from this. gaming has been approved by every single jurisdiction by the voters a few years ago in order to keep it competitive, in order to maximize the dollars that come to the state, we believe that this is the right way to go. >> a prince george's county group opposed to gambling plans to demonstrate outside the state capitol and then share their views with lawmakers. this morning an investigation is under way into a deadly house fire in prince george's county. doctors couldn't save a 5-year- old girl who was pulled from a duplex in capitol heights yesterday afternoon. both her father and teenage uncle suffered life-threatening injuries. delia goncalves is live in washington hospital with more. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike, andrea. a very difficult story, especially for neighbors and family members of this small, close-knit family who lived inside of that home in capitol heights. the girl's father, 24 years old, we're told he suffered

severe burns over 50% of his body. her 15-year-old uncle was also burned and this morning he is in critical condition here at washington hospital center. when firefighters arrived to the carrington court duplex yesterday evening, flames were shooting out of the second floor window we're told. the 24-year-old father was in the front yard telling rescue crews the children were trapped inside. both kids were pulled from the second floor windows. paramedics worked very hard, were able to revive both kids but later we learned the 5-year- old little girl passed. >> just want my cousins to be all right. talking to my mom on the phone, you seen how hysterical she was and how she couldn't drive. it was just eating me up. the girl's 5 years old. just a happy, go lucky kid.

>> reporter: that 15-year-old kid is fighting for his life at this hour. pg county fire spokesman mark brady tweeted out a message shortly after 10:00 after learning of the deaths of that 5-year-old little girl. he tweeted, quote, it is profound sadness we have to announce a 5-year-old girl rescued from the fire in capitol heights has died as a rut of her injuries. -- result of her injuries. you can imagine how it affected those paramedics who worked so hard to revive both kids who were pulled out of that fire unconscious and without a pulse only to learn hours later that this little girl lost her bath. the investigation into -- her battle. the investigation into the fire continues. >> thanks, delia. a former culpeper, virginia police officer accused of killing an unarmed woman is now scheduled to go on trial in january. daniel harmon-wright is accused of shooting 54-year-old patricia cook last february as

she sat in the driver's seat of her jeep outside a church. police have sefd the former officer was -- said the former officer was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle. he has pleaded not guilty in the case. d.c. police captain hilton burton formally a commander is filing a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the city. it's all over fallout from actor charlie sheen's high speed police es scart last year. -- escort last year. he said he was demoted after saying escorts were commonplace. captain burton says his rights were violated under the whistle blower protection act. chief lanier has previously said burton's demotion was due to poor job performance, not council testimony. some trees that could post a safety had discard to drivers -- hazard to drivers will soon be removed. it comes in the wake of the death of a driver last month

when an oak tree fell on to his car on georgetown pike. arborists have determined 50 more trees pose a danger and need to come down. some other trees will be closely watched. an update on a landslide that left two homes uninhabitable in stafford county, virginia. it happened last september after days of rain. then the ground gave way behind a row of houses along brush evert court. the repairs are expected to cost about a half million dollars but the majority of the work will be donated by the private companies making those repairs. another $150,000 will be donated by the county. it is 5:35. time for the latest your money report now. >> jessica doyle is back. if you're having trouble paying off those student loans, you are not alone. >> that's right. paying over $100,000 for a college degree often pays you back with a great career. we know that, right? but the student loan debt can hang around your neat like an albatross. believe it or not it can follow

you around till retirement. nowadays even social security benefits are being garnished. smartmoney.com reports that the federal government is with holding money from a rapidly growing number of social security recipients. this is up about 50% so far this year. this can be a big chunk of cash, too. generally running up to 15%. so say you're making $1200 a month from social security. that would mean losing $190 out of that paycheck. these seniors may not even be paying for their own education. they may be in hock to help their own kids pay for college. others went back to school later in life. here's some good news for frequent flyers. airlines are delivering your bags on time more than ever. a report from an information technology company shows that 99.1% of checked baggage actually arrived on time in 2011. >> no way. >> this is the highest rate on record. but there is more to the numbers than meets the eye. fewer people are checking their

luggage nowadays because of all those extra luggage fees. also the situation is improving in part because there's more pressure on the airlines since checked luggage comes with a fee flyers have higher expectations. here's a rule of thumb for you. transfer bags are the most likely to be lost. we're talking about the bags belonging to people with a connecting flight. basically are the more flights you have, the more opportunity there is for a mistake. one thing that can help flyers, downloading mobile apps to track the bags themselves. delta has one of these. there's also an app called baggage claim and that's available for the iphone where you can basically -- it tracks your bag. >> for those of you who don't have capabilities for apps, they told us to put the destination inside the luggage so if it got lost t could come to us another way. >> can't they install a chip on your luggage tag? >> there are tags that have barcodes and tracking barcodes so if they get lost, for example, people can find them and text you.

screening in the past two years so they have been disconnected. we want to get them back into care. >> reporter: the director karla williams says volunteer ambassadors will select buddies. they'll support them in getting them a mammogram and educate them about early detection. >> we see that d.c. really still experiences a lot of cancer health disparities, especially when it comes to breast cancer. for example, a woman living in ward 5 or ward 8 is twice as likely to die from breast cancer compared to someone living in ward 3. so because of that, we figure that one of the best ways to reach women with other women who they already know and trust. >> reporter: women of promise hopes to reach more than 2,000 women having at least 70% of them actually getting a mammogram will be a clear measure of success. >> that's really a tall order because women oftentimes even if we reach them with information, they don't make that transition to care. so that's really our benchmark.
