killed by a white supremacist last sunday. the gunman took his own life. members of the temple were allowed to return to their building yesterday in suburban milwaukee and ed payne has more. >> reporter: with the help of donated supplies, temple members swept, scrubbed and painted over damage from the shooting that killed six people and critically injured three others. they reopened the dining hall where they run an open kitchen for the community. >> our congregation -- they're going to do whatever it takes to get become here and really -- oh man it's been amazing. how many people have come and you know just cleaning. i took pictures just because it's like a positive feeling to see everybody back together and so dedicated to this place. >> reporter: they're leaving alone bullet hole in the metal flame to the door leading to the main prayer area as a reminder of the tragedy. here's the pantry where more than 15 women and children hid for more than two hours and some were injured. the gunman wade michael page

shot himself in the head. the motive is still unknown. the son of the temple's president who died in the shooting has a word for the victims and another for the gunman. >> they are heroes. they are living the american dream. the other person? was a coward. and at the end of the day, he should always be remembered as a coward. >> reporter: another member reflected on the tragedy. >> i think because of miseducation, that people concentrating on differences rather than concentrating on similarities. >> reporter: civil rights leader jesse jackson paid a visit to the temple and helped paint. he says more shootings are likely taphole he unless the u.s -- to follow unless the u.s. tightens the gun laws. meanwhile eric holder will be among the speakers at today's memorial we've learned. i'm ed payne reporting. >> the condition of the police officer who was girardi in that shooting was -- injured in that shooting was upgraded yesterday to satisfactory.

maryland lawmaker are debating gambling for a secondary. a senate committee voted 11-1 yesterday in favor of the measure. governor o'malley says expanded gambling will generate more than $200 million. supporters want to build a ravel style casino -- las vegas style casino at national harbor in oxon hill and senate president mike miller is one of the most powerful supporters of gambling. >> if this bill passes, what you're seeing in the obama, romney ads are nothing compared to the ads you will be seeing in prince george's county if this bill passes because the people in west virginia do not want this bill to pass. because they want the maryland money to continue to flow to west virginia. we need to keep it here. we need to build schools with maryland money. >> if maryland lawmakers approve the gambling proposal it would still require the approval of voters in november. well, metro riders can expect another weekend of delays because of track work.

the medical center and the bethesda stations on the red line will be closed at 10:00 p.m. tonight and they will last through sunday. shuttle buses however will be provided. red line riders should add an extra 30 minutes to their trip. there will also be single tracking on parts of the orange, blue and green lines. a prince george's county man is behind bars this afternoon. he is accused of sexually abusing three young children. investigators say that michael brochu sexually abused a 10- year-old boy in his bowie home between august 2011 and june 30th of this year. detectives tell 9news now they also believe that brochu abused a 6-year-old family member and another 8-year-old boy in his care. a virginia man who lived on the premises of a home day care facility has been accused of molesting some of the children

who attended there. 28-year-old elwood thomas of annandale has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery. police say a 14-year-old girl has told them that thomas inappropriately touched her when she attended happy land day care. police said they are investigating complaints from other children as well. that day care has since been closed. all right, it's time to say hail to the redskins because rookie quarterback robert griffin iii had a very impressive preseason game in buffalo-night. rg 3 as he's called completed three passes for 58 yards including a 20-yard touchdown to pierre garcon and the redskins beat the bulls 7-6. the burgundy and told will take on the bear -- gold will take on the bears next saturday in chicago. well, the red, white and blue is translating into a lot of gold at the olympics.

u.s. olympians now firmly ahead in the medal count. monica villamizar has london. >> reporter: in their gold medal soccer match against japan they found redemption. lloyd scored trace to help the ossa -- twice to help the usa turn the tables after japan beat them last year in the world cup final. america soccer stars defeated japan 2-1 and claimed their third straight olympic gold. the u.s. women also won in the water taking down spain to grab america's first gold in the event. coaches even jumped in to celebrate. it's the first time female boxers have battled for gold at the games. shields pounded her russian rivals to win the meddle weight -- middleweight crown. athletes and their families often celebrate here at the usa house. other countries have olympic homes as well. jamaica's was packed after

usain bolt sprinted for gold again. fans went wild as bolt won the 200-meter only days after he took the 100-meter title. he's the first man to be crowned a double sprint champion at a back-to-back olympic games. american mandy o mitchell showed another kind of determination. he broke his leg during the four by 400 meter relay and still finished the race helping usa qualify for the finals. for other athletes the pain of competition is over. swimming star ryan lochte is living it up in london. >> you know what i really want to do is go on those double decker buses. >> reporter: he posed for photos with fans after a late night out at a pub in the capital. monica villamizar, cbs news, london. >> a lot of people are talking about usain bolt after the latest win. he called himself a living legend but he says bolt will have to prove himself in more than two olympics in order to claim that status. coming up on 9news now at

army private nasar jason abdu told authorities he planned to make bombs as part of a massive attack against fort hood soldiers last year. he was convicted in may on six federal charges including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. and a man in an afghan uniform shot and killed three u.s. troops in southern afghanistan. this is the third attack in recent days in which afghan soldiers or militants disguised as soldiers target u.s. troops. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: a man in an afghan uniform shot and killed three u.s. troops in southern afghanistan. the american troops were training afghan police to takeover security of their country. it was the third so-called green on blue attack in recent days. in which afghan soldiers or taliban militants in december guise target nato forces. >> i cannot give you the specific -- details for this investigation since it's still

today's attack. a washington county emergency services dispatcher told wusa9 that they received a telephone call about a tractor- trailer on fire about 11:00 a.m. now the rig is located on i-70 between clear spring and big pool. the dispatcher says the immediate area has been evacuated. and about six miles of i-70 is closed. that interstate is expected to stay closed for at least two hours and maybe more. well, it was all caught on tape. the dramatic rescue of a fisherman off western australia. reports say that he had been treading water for about 20 hours after his boat sank. as he struggled to stay afloat, a hammer head shark is circling nearby and reports say that one of the fisherman's companions was found dead and another is missing. the 49-year-old man who was pulled from the water is being

today, i am one-on-one with susan kudhafin, she's president and ceo of alzheimer's association national capitol area chapter and recently there was an outpouring of concern and love after the prince george's county executive rashern baker announced his wife had early onset dementia. a part of alzheimer's. and we send our love and our prayers to his family. it is a devastating diagnosis for most people. i've been involved with alzheimer's association for some time and i know. my mother had dementia. how serious is apples humanners now? what are the numbers? -- alzheimer's now? what are the numbers? >> right now jc, there are 5.4

million people in the country that have been diagnosed with alzheimer's and 200,000 people have been diagnosed with younger onset. so less than 5% of the population has younger onset but the diagnostic tools as well as the awareness and thanks to you for raising that awareness, has brought attention and focus to this issue and it's a tremendous act of courage on the part of mr. baker to bring forward this personal family tragedy. >> very, very personal and she is so young. we're finding that younger people as you said are getting the disease, why is that? >> we're not sure statistically yet if there's an increase in the disease. there's no evidence to support that there's an increase in the disease. what we are seeing jc, is that there are better diagnostic tools and that and the increasing awareness about the disease has really helped families discern some

please remember the alzheimer's association in your area. thank you susan. >> thank you. let's get a forecast from howard. >> and jc we're seeing a couple of showers locally right now. light ones for the most part. but later this afternoon, we could be dealing with some strong storms and a mix of sun and clouds across the general region. and 81 there may still be some spots by 1:00 in the upper 70s. that sunshine is going to help to destabilize the atmosphere and the upper level winds will be picking up this afternoon and that will help in the formation of some strong thunderstorms. maybe even a few severe thunderstorms. 83 by 7:00. and at 9:00 still looking at some showers and storms around. 81. this stuff is going to be moving in the west to east -- from west to east. as we watch heavy rains this morning and the thunderstorms, new york now coastal jersey and even ocean city. saturday could be a rough day there. to the west this line of showers falling apart now with lots of sunny breaks and things are going to heat up but locally just light showers for the most part. a couple of heavier ones here

just north of vienna and this goes southwest between fairfax and chantilly coming out of poem county. drift -- prince william county. drifting over the prince george's county over the next hour but it's really this late afternoon i'm much more concerned about. with sunshine luray is up to 79. it's 78 now in la plata and we're still in the 70s which is a lot better than yesterday when you remember, we got to 95 for the high. here's a look at the michael & son weather camera. out in tysons corner. got some low clouds and high clouds mixing in and had a new sprinkles -- few sprinkles out there early. there's a lot of low level moisture to work with. we're saying good-bye to the storms here. and we've got this spin in the atmosphere over michigan. that's an upper level low. that's going to drive a cold front toward us as we get into later tonight and into early saturday. out ahead of it though the air mass is unstable by -- 4:00 you can see the showers and storms here. this is what will have to watch potentially for some strong to severe storms.
