vegas style gambling and also allow a casino at national harbor in prince george's county. the state senate is poised to vote on this issue in the next few hours. our scott broom is live in annapolis monitoring it all. scotty? >> reporter: well, in fact the senators are streaming in right now for a 6:00 session. they are widely expected to push this gambling bill through. so that's just another step in the direction of a dramatic expansion of gambling in maryland. they will then kick it on to the house of delegates, a much more fractured body on this issue where there are a lot higher hurdles for gambling next week. the senate bill will clear the way to build a casino at national harbor in prince george's county and also legalize live table games like blackjack and craps statewide resulting in vegas style casinos ranging another $2 million for schools. but the bill in some cases pits county against county. anne arundel for instance is

opposed fearing new competition from national harbor and prince george's county would hurt the new maryland live casino at anne arundel mills. those divisions are most sharp in the house of delegates where republicans are taking shots for rush the bill through. >> we have real problems to fix and we're down here in a special session for an issue that is not an emergency, and it's very, very unfortunate. >> reporter: meanwhile prince george's county delegates are torn, under pressure from powerful church groups opposed to gambling and powerful money interest on the other side in favor. listen to what it's like to be a prince george's counties delegate today. >> i've been opposed to gambling since 2002. the citizens of the state have overridden my opinion. >> reporter: is there room for your mind to change? >> there's always room for various of changes. >> reporter: so even as the senate is poised to push this through in the next hour or so, the outcome of this is far from

a sure thing. and regardless of what kind of product the legislators produce down here in this very unusual summer special session, the voters will be asked to approve all of it in a referendum in november. so there's a lot more arguing to come. reporting live in annapolis, scott broom, 9news now. >> going to be an interesting night either way. thank you. another set of groups in maryland is trying to get lawmakers to take up their cause during the special session. leaders of the state's five transportation advocacy groups sent a letter to the general assembly today. they want legislators to pass increased funding for transportation during the session. they say the money has stayed the same since 1992. so far it's not clear whether lawmakers will consider their request. a man suspected of trying to prey on young boys in d.c. has police reaching out to the public to track him down. they believe the man is involved in four separate incidents, some more suspicious than others and all clustered

fairly closely together in northwest. bruce leshan is live in the american university park neighborhood with more on what the cops is have to -- cops have to say about this guy. >> reporter: this started fairly innocent with the guy apparently distributing flyers in this american university park neighborhood subjecting he was -- subjecting -- suggesting he was available for private tutoring for boys but his behavior has become steadily more disturbing. on monday police say they got a call from someone in mount pleasant, the same guy they're looking at allegedly had child pornography in his possession. then on tuesday they say the man was naked in the locker room at the wilson aquatic center attached to the high school and they say he, quote, made overtures to three boys age 9 to 11. then the very next day on wednesday, they say a young boy was walking down 36th street and a man drove up in a blue

four-door chevy and tried repeatedly to lure the boy into his car. >> these are very disturbing incidents, raises a lot of concern for the police department. anyone who's approaching young children, the situation at the pool where the person was naked even raises more concerns. >> reporter: actually the guy is in custody being held on a bench warrant, but they haven't been able to charge him with any of these incidents so far. it's not even clear that most of them are really crimes but they suspect there really are more victims out there. and what they're looking for is for those victims to come forward because really the last thing they want to do is let this guy go if he is indeed a child predator. derek, back to you. >> you can certainly understand that, bruce. thank you. until just a few weeks ago, arlington county could count or could say, rather, that no one had been murdered there in 28 months.

but since then police are now investigating four homicides. that has people there asking what's going on in arlington? >> reporter: i'm peggy fox in arlington county where a violent crime spree is worrying some residents. in just the past three weeks, there have been five homicides and it all started with a murder-suicide right here. >> it is very strange and i don't -- it's sad. >> reporter: an arlington county police officer sits outside the apartment where 59- year-old keafe spriggs lived. he and his temporary houseguest, 31-year-old carl moten were killed tuesday morning. yesterday there was a stabbing right out in the open along wilson boulevard. a man who tried to stop a thief from stealing his vehicle was stabbed multiple times. police are searching for the suspect. and for the men seen in this surveillance video committing an armed robbery at a check cashing store along columbia pike. a suspect was arrested in the july 27 murder of tommy wong who was killed inside his jewelry store. so many violent crimes in such a short period has some residents on edge.

>> it's very tragic. >> it is certainly something that concerns us. >> reporter: police chief douglas scott doesn't see any connection between the crimes. neither does this lifelong resident. >> these all seem to be isolated incidents. hopefully it's coming to an end now. >> reporter: peggy fox, 9news now. one day of mourning in oak creek, wisconsin, for the victims of last weekend's shooting at a sikh temple. today thousands showed up for a public wake and memorial service for those killed. as manuel gallegus tells us, the community says it will emerge stronger from this tragedy. >> reporter: hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects to the six people shoat and killed last -- shot and killed last sunday at the sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. >> we mourn with you. we pray with you. and we support you. >> reporter: the visitation and pray service was held in a high school gymnasium to accommodate the large crowd, including local police officers. the bodies of the victims lay in open caskets at the front of the room. family members thanked the community for its support.

>> the acknowledgement of our deceased and injured makes our pain a little wes. >> reporter: 40-year-old wade michael page opened fire at the temple last weekend during prayer services. he took his own life after police fired at him. >> my labor is always free. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder called shooting an act of terror and a hate crime. he commended the sikh community's resilience. >> this community witnessed the very worst of humankind, but for every minute, every hour, and every day since then you have exemfullied and you have inspire -- exemplified and you have inspired the very best in who we are. >> reporter: worshipers cleaned and prepared the inside of the temple. members will spend the next 48 hours reading the sikh holy book from cover to cover, a

traditional rite honoring the death. manuel gallegus, cbs news. >> three of those shooting victims are still in the hospital. doctors say two of them are getting better, including oak creek police officer brian murphy. the other victim still in critical condition. mitt romney and president obama took the day off from the campaign trail but tomorrow the race for the white house comes right to our area. mitt romney will kick off a four-day bus trip in four key swing states and it starts here in virginia. but he won't get the voters all to himself. the democratic committee will shadow his trip with this bus. the dnc calls the event, the quote, romney economics: the middle class under the bus tour. that is as the latest poll shows the race deadlock. it was released today by gallop and it says 46% of registered voters would pick president obama if the election were held today. and 46% would choose romney. just a month ago that same poll

. get ready to pay more at the pump this weekend. gas prices are up for the 12th straight day. aaa reports the average price here in our area is now up to $3.67. that is up a penny from yesterday and 28 cents from a month ago. we could also see a hike on maryland's intercounty connector but not for tolls. this would be for speed. county executive ike leggett is asking the state to increase the road's 55 mile per hour limit. he tells wtop that drivers should get an opportunity to go faster at a safe speed. the maryland transportation authority says it will take a look, but the road's top speed is 60 and that would only save about a minute and 50 seconds of drive time. no smooth sailing on metro as track work will affect four of five lines and the biggest delays will be on the redline.

metro is closing the medical center and bethesda stations tonight at 10:00 and they won't reopen until monday morning. there will be some shuttle buses but you need to factor in about an extra half-hour for your trip. metro is also single tracking on parts of the orange, the blue, and the green lines. coming up next on 9news now, talk about your pedal power. a maryland couple make as move to a new home on the seat of a bike. we're going to tell you why when we come back.

gallons -- 125 gallons of fuel by using more led lights on the games. we know moving is never fun but imagine moving and using no trucks, no vans, no cars, only bikes. a couple in college park did just that this weekend. kristin fisher shows us how they pulled it off. >> reporter: anthony is a bike mechanic yak in college park -- mechanic in college park. his wife is a environmental consultant in washington. >> we decided we didn't want cars. i ride my bike to work. my wife commutes via metro. >> reporter: when it came time for them to move one mile away, they decided to stick with their no car policy. >> it started with a joke. we're going to move by bicycle. as i started talking with my friends here, people got really into it and thought it was a great idea. i thought let's roll with this. >> reporter: road spread fast

but they were still skeptical. >> i didn't think it was going to work all the way up until the day before i didn't think it was going to work. but everybody came together at the last minute and it was awesome. >> reporter: 25 people turned out to help but it was a d.c. courier who saved the day by donating a cargo trail their could hold 400 pounds. >> we had things piled like bookshelves, mattress, other bookshelves, just huge pieces of furniture just piled up. >> reporter: they even tried to get their jack russell terrier lucy into the car free spirit. >> i made her a trailer out of a milk crate and training wheels. she moved about ten feet and she was like, i'm not doing this. >> reporter: you might think moving with bicycles would take days, maybe weeks but these guys knocked it out in just two hours. >> we started at 1:45 and' were done by -- and we were done by 4:00. it was one of those experiences where you're like wow this is community. it's easy to do what's most convenient but there's always some potential to be a little greener. >> reporter: in college park,

kristin fisher, 9news now. >> in case you're wondering they got all of their stuff moved in one piece. good for them. maybe you haven't noticed but the perseid meteor shower has been putting on night shows for a couple of weeks. they'll hit their peak this weekend. your best chance for a good look is probably after midnight on saturday and into the wee hours of sunday morning. so what are you going to do? you going to stay awake or get up early? >> i'll probably stay up late. we'll get drier air in which is better for viewing and the moon is waning so everything will work out nicely. you have to get away from lights though. good news, we have no warnings right now. some of the latest model data is kind of playing down our chance for severe weather which is good. so we're going to stay on yellow alert for now. around town very quiet for the time being. child the warnings have expired to the north of us, there's still a pretty good storm up in northern frederick county. it's about to enter in just kind of push flew franklin --

through franklin and adams county in pennsylvania. we have great video we'll show you at 7:00 and flooding in hagerstown so we know the storm had a lot of rain. there's another storm west of williams port. this is the storm running through thurmont around 15. where will it go in the next hour? well, it's going to go to the east. we'll move out just a little bit and widen out the radar. there's gaithersburg and 2730 in fred -- 270 in frederick. it rolls to the east and still holds together pretty well. right now quiet around the immediate metro area. that said, we have some more showers and storms trying to develop in the mountains. we'll see. one commuter model has everything -- computer model has everything going north and south of us. that would be nice. live look outside brought to you by michael & son, 88. that's the high so far today. it's under 90. that's a victory. dew points upper 60s.

next seven days starts to kind of flirt with 90. back to 90 on tuesday with an isolated storm. then upper 80s on wednesday and thursday. not too bad. back to around 90 again on friday. so some good news. nothing super hot in the next seven days. really some good news, nothing heavy our way for the next few hours if you want to go outside to dinner. >> we were sitting here thinking about what we were going to talk about. oh, that's right. rg3. >> rumor has it some heisman trophy guy was playing last night. everything smelling like rose as day after rg3's debut. the man himself is going to tell us how his first crack at n.f.l. defenses went. you cannot deny this any more than that. we're about to bring playoff baseball to d.c. believe it next.

one scary moment from last night occurred on maybe the most exciting play. rg3 for a touchdown. offensive tackle trent williams trucking over would-be tacklers but injures his foot. he limped off out of the game but good news. trent williams says he is okay. here's the great news. rg3 looking pretty, pretty good. poised in the pocket after a couple of series that went nowhere. he started lighting up a couple of lasers to pierre.

his maiden voyage in the n.f.l. looking pretty good. how did it go in your eyes, mr. griffin? >> at the end of the day, this is what we do for a living. i play football -- played football for a long time. the game hasn't changed, just the size of the people changed and the talent level. it was fun to get out there, run around, suit up in the redskins gear for the first time officially. it's something i won't forget. >> this touchdown in the first quarter providing a gabby douglas moment. the forward flip into the end zone. cute. the placement refs didn't give him a penalty. i wouldn't describe it as olympic but garcon was certainly inspired by? >> i was inspired by the olympic gymnastics team. i have to work on my landing but if t was very, very interesting. i had enough air but the landing was not where it needed to be but we were excited.
