back toward hagerstown. not severe but you've already seen a lot of flooding n. sin suggest to injury here. -- flooding. this is insult to injury here. this will move to the north and to the east. and probably weaken a little bit. so some good news there. we see a lot of showers and thunderstorms in the wide view. the showers and storms back towards charlottesville. they're moving northeastward. that's what's going to roll in here we think later today. we'll come back and give you a timetable and have the complete weekend forecast. we've got breaking news out of annapolis where the maryland senate has approved a measure to allow table games like blackjack at national harbor. the senate passage through this special session is no surprise. it's passage through the house of delegates that will be tougher.
7:01 pm
the senate also passes a bill creating strict liability for all dog owners. d.c. police desperately trying to make the case against a man they believe is been trying to prey on young boys. four separate incidents, some a lot more suspicious and some less so, all clustered fairly closely together in northwest. the story from bruce leshan. >> reporter: on month police say they got a -- on monday police say they got a call from someone in mount pleasant. the same guy they're looking at allegedly had child pornography in his possession. then on tuesday they say the man was naked in the locker room at the wilson aquatic center attached to the high school. and they say he, quote, made overtures three boys age 9 to 11. then the very next day on wednesday, they say a young boy was walking down 36th street and a man drove up in a blue four-door chevy and tried repeatedly to lure the boy into his car. >> these are very disturbing
7:02 pm
incidents, raises a lot of concern for the police department. anyone who's approaching young children, the situation at the pool where the percentage was naked even raises more concern. >> reporter: on wednesday the day of the 36th street incident, police arrested the guy apparently for failing to appear in court on a separate unlawful entry charge. he remains in custody but it's unclear if what he's done so far constitutes a crime. >> nobody has been charged in this case, but we are confident we've identified the person that was involved in these incidents. >> reporter: neighbors are still concerned. >> it's scary. >> reporter: keep an eye out? >> yeah, of course. >> reporter: hold your kid a little closer. >> yes. >> reporter: police suspect that there may be more victims out there, and they want to hear from those victims and soon because the last thing that they want to do is release a child sex predator back out on to the streets for lack of

evidence. in northwest d.c., bruce leshan, 9news now. this is elwood louie thomas. tonight he's charged with sexual battery after he allegedly touched an 11-year- old girl in a home day care facility in annandale. the happy land day care closed earlier this year, but the alleged crime actually happened more than two years ago. police tell 9news now they are receiving other reports from children alleging they, too, were inappropriately touched while at that day care. if you're one of those or have any more information, call fairfax police detective r.k.castelon at 703-246-3793. a 3-year-old boy is in the hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the chest. police in hagerstown say the boy and his 7-year-old sister found the gun in a parking lot behind the wesley united methodist church. no other bullets were in the 22 caliber better rhetta. the boy's -- baretta.
7:04 pm
the boy's condition is unknown. three more marines are dead and an afghan police officer is the one who pulled the trigger. defense department officials say the americans were marine special operations forces, and this is the third attack on coalition forces by the afghan military they're trying to help in the last week. a memorial prayer service was held today for the victims of the sikh temple shooting. hundreds of mourners packed into a high school gym to remember the six people shot and killed last sunday. the bodies of the victims lay in open caskets at the front of the room while family members thanked the community for its support. and attorney general eric holder commended the sikh community for its resiel defense. -- >> resilience. >> this community witnessed the very worst of human kind, but for every minute, every hour, and every day since then, you have exemplified and you have inspired the very best in who we are. >> the shooter, 40-year-old
7:05 pm
wade michael page, took his own life during a shootout with the police. worshipers cleaned and repaired the inside of the temple but interestingly, they left one bullet hole in the doorjamb. it's a memorial to the victims they tell us. turning now to campaign 2012 and for better or worse, polls are the only way to track how it's shifting back and forth it candidates. but now twitter may be offering a new way to gauge all of that. editor paul singer is here with me now to show us how it works. i like looking at the bottom of our local paper's web page to see twitter mentioned. you guys have taken this to a whole new level, though. >> this goes a little further. we actually believe we can tell you what people are saying in those. it not only mentions barack obama, but did they say something nice or negative. >> explain how it works? >> we don't know what it tells us. basically what it does, this is built with twitter, the "u.s.a. today" twitter election meter. what it does is it tracks
7:06 pm
sentiment expressed in two million tweet as week about barack obama and mitt romney. you can see today, the twitter sentiment is obama is a 20 out of a hundred, low. romney is a 12 out of a hundred, lower. and all asee -- you'll see this is where the historic track goes. you can go back in time and pick any date you like. here july 18, obama was at 30. romney at 21. we have these dates, special dates. you see this is what it tells us. things actually do move. here is barack obama's birthday. sure enough, the twitter sentiment for obama jumped. suddenly he's up to 74, 75 that day because the democratic party said wish obama a happy birthday. >> positive sentiment. >> the interesting thing here to me is twitter is so new, you don't know for sure what this all means, do you? >> we don't. we do think it tells you something about the conversation. this is another slice we've
7:07 pm
done. this is the 12 swing states where the battleground states we call them, and here you can see one of the things it tells you, as the advertising has increased in the swing states, look at where their approval levels are hanging out. so the negativity looks like it does get reflected in this twitter conversation. >> it almost looks as though neither side is benefiting from all the negative ads. their likability, their mentions are being pushed out on both sides. >> that's what we think it demonstrates in the swing states. we don't know how this applies to voting behavior. we don't know who these people are, if they're actually going to the polls, who else they're taking with them. but we do think it tells us something about the conversation going on about politics and twitter. >> this is fascinating stuff and we of course will know about election day and maybe we can extrapolate what it means for the next election. let's talk about the vice presidential situation. we know mitt romney is about to pick his nominee in the next couple of weeks or somewhere in there. let me ask you the question, when and who do you think he will pick? >> i don't have a who.
7:08 pm
there are three or four people at the top of the list. there is ryan from wisconsin. there is pawlenty from minnesota, rubio from florida. these are names that have been kicked around. any are possible. he could come out of the woodwork with someone we haven't thought of. i'm personally thinking a woman from new hampshire. >> you don't think governor bob mcdonnell is top tier? >> i don't think. the issue of the abortion bill they were passing there, it doesn't strike me as likely but it's possible. >> when do you think it will happen? >> if i was betting my nickel, i would bet thursday or friday of next week. somebody asked in my office, do we need to be prepared this weekend and i said i don't think so which means of course it will happen this weekend and well very to go running back to the office. >> paul singer, thank you. this is fascinating stuff. i'll be watching your election
7:09 pm
7:12 pm
have you ever driven on the intercounty connector? did you stay under the 55 mile an hour speed limit? the relatively new toll road still has the double nickel speed limit even though traffic could often be described as sparse. when ike leggett told wtop -- ike leggett told the wtop he wants the speed limit raised. john leopold is already charged with misconduct in office, but now he may have a brand new problem. in sworn depositions, police officers said leopold ordered a county employee who complained about his behavior to be fired. those depositions are part of a harassment suit who claims leopold made unwelcome sexual advances and berated her because of her hairstyle.

7:17 pm
happening and we're having one here in d.c. >> this cop could be just one bozo who said something wrong. why do you think it's a problem that needs to be addressed every year? >> this is definitely not something that just one police officer in toronto thinks. we see it all over the place like the media coverage of a 13- year-old girl being gang raped in texas a few years ago and the meedz ya coverage discussed how she was wearing makeup and clothes that made her look older. nothing was talked about how it was horrid that people would do this to a child. >> that's what you want to bring out. if you blame the victim, that's the wrong thing to do. >> we want to raise awareness about that. >> a lot of people got the idea in their head this is going to be a lot of women walking around in scantily clad outfits. is that part of what this is? >> it's not. some people do come intentionally in problemtive clothing to make -- provocative clothing that they can wear what they want and do not deserve to be sexually assaulted. >> but others come in the outfits they were wearing when they were sexually assaulted
7:18 pm
and other people come as they are in jeans and a t-shirt. >> where is it, when is it? what do you have to do to participate? >> we'll be meeting at lafayette park at 10:30. we'll march out at 11:00 towards the washington monument down 15th street. then we'll hear from a bunch of survivors and organizations at the theater stage at the washington monument until about 2:00. >> spreading the word. samantha wright, organizer of this year's slutwalk. topper, hopefully they won't get rained on. there could be a couple of leftover showers but the main event will be over. we're looking at storms to the south and west of us. they may actually end up going into southern maryland but may get up into the immediate metro area. you have some time to do some things. you can walk the dog or catch dinner before anything hits the fan so to speak. the thunderstorms up to the north have weaken but still producing heavy rains in through washington county, northern frederick county,
7:19 pm
franklin and adams county in pennsylvania but no warnings on those. satellite picture, radar combined, you can see this spinning here. that's the area of low pressure sitting and spinning. it's eventually going to push the cold front through. it will take all of tonight and a little bit of tomorrow to get this front if essentially the ohio river valley through the metro area. it may end up kind of stalling around the chesapeake bay tomorrow morning. because this is still to our west, we run the risk of thunderstorms pretty much all night. we also have a little trough of low pressure, a little disturbance to the west of us. that, too, is kicking off a round of thunderstorms to the north and west of us. so we're not done just yet. but right now it's pretty pleasant out. a live look outside, 85. high was 88. dew point 70. dew points in the 70s, not too comfortable. winds out of the south at 13. at least you have a bit of a breeze. the head line, big storms are still possible, critical times from now till 2:00 a.m. the main threat heavy wind,
7:20 pm
rain. nice and less humid on sunday. sunday shaping up to be a fantastic day. tonight thunderstorms, some heavy, some severe, muggy, 68 to about 74. tomorrow morning we're looking at a shower or thunderstorm possible, especially east of town. temperatures in the 70s and 80s. then by afternoon a slight chance of an isolated storm, essentially east of town. otherwise partly cloudy, less humid, 85 to 89. winds southwest at 10. next three days, our 9 weather alert codes, green, green and green. hallelujah. 87 tomorrow. maybe a shower in the morning. isolated storm in the afternoon. less humid on sunday. gorgeous day. upper 80s. and a bit hot on monday but dry. temperatures around 90. next seven days, well, it stays around 90 on tuesday. but still dry. and then on wednesday, thursday, friday temperatures go back into the upper 80s on wednesday and thursday. a slight chance of an isolated shower i guess on tuesday. i just threw one in there and one on thursday but nothing

organized. back up to 91 on friday. so we're in pretty good shape right now. no watches, no warnings but we can't let our guard down just yet. >> we'll relax. let us talk about the weird news file. anybody remember the awakening, the cool statue that used to be at hanes point until some folks in prince george's made off with it? we're not over that. we're still mad about it. check this out in the bay area. what the heck is that? is it maybe an academy awards statuette? whatever it is supposed to be, it's sitting in a fountain outside of a mechanics bank in the bay area. it's seriously turning heads. yeah. looks like some sort of sleeping giant, right? but it is called appropriately fountain head. the artist is a fellow who said he wanted to do something kind of playful and get some notice. i think we would have to argue he pulled that off. my only warning is watch out for the folks at the national harbor. they take a liking to your statue, all of a sudden old

7:26 pm
that's just me. jason writes, what about competitive eating? maybe kobe can make his big comeback. but others taking our question seriously, especially when we asked if yoga or poll dance -- pole dancing ought to be in the olympics. she doesn't appear to be smiling as she writes, i trained in pole dancing in addition to ballet. i ask you, have you ever really asked a pole dancer? i mean, with more than disgust because of the taboo cliche. it takes a ton of control to keep your body on that control with little contact. not to mention it's not second nature for most people to hang upside down vertically by just their ankles. >> disgusting or no i think it's hard to argue it's easy but even hardtory make the case it ought to be an olympic contest. haven't we gotten enough contests in the olympics to count on judges to decide winners and losers. you may judge me off target.
