nearly one out of six americans are in poverty. the worst rate in a generation. mitt romney's vp running mate is on the attack this evening. hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. thanks for joining us. mitt romney introduces paul ryan as his vice presidential running mate in norfolk today. the chairman of the house budget committee, ryan has put forward budget plans that would remake medicare. they are now on a bus tour of battleground states, starting in virginia. we have team coverage to you.

>> reporter: you know bruce, this was a very important stop for the romney campaign, because for the first time, folks are starting to get to see him and his choice for vice president together. also, according to recent numbers, romney is still trailing president obama by four points here in the commonwealth of virginia. earlier today during this rally, both mitt romney and his newly announced running mate paul ryan took the stage in manassas in front of thousands of supporters who came out to get a glimpse of the two together. the commonwealth of virginia has become a battleground. a group, according to recent polls has narrowly split. the big show today was paul ryan himself. the chairman of the house budget committee is regarded as a staunch republican whoa has been widely criticized for having continue veers sell budget cutting plans. >> you think the economy is

heading the right direction? you think we are getting our debt and deficit under control? do you think the country's on the right track? you know why? because president obama is our president. and he has put all of his policies in place and they are just not working. >> reporter: both paul ryan and mitt romney left the area here to crowds who were waving them off. they are going to hit other battle ground states, florida, ohio, even south carolina among the states they are going to hit. bruce? a quick question. the crowd, were they excited about paul ryan or was some disappointment expressed? >> reporter: i have to tell you something. the people here were receptive to this.

a lot of folks i spoke to say they are actually getting behind this ticket and are supporting this move for vice presidential candidate for the romney campaign. a lot of others were thrown out there today, but this will be interesting to see where all of this goes. ken, thanks a lot for that. paul ryan is a virtual unknown in virginia. sue rae chin has answers. >> reporter: experts have said romney has few path to his victory without winning virginia. he may not have a large impact on the commonwealth but ryan will appeal to fiscal conservatives because he knows the country's budget inside and out. some are calling him the antipalin pick. >> reporter: george mason's political analyst says romney's vp choice was a smart move. but one that may not win virginia. >> virginia republicans, few of them are going shucks, we could

have had a slightly easier november. ryan is not a governor, he is not mcdonell or eric cantor. i don't think there is a big virginia impact. what the pick of paul ryan is that romney wants to run on big ideas. >> reporter: independent voters have mixed feelings. >> it is time to exercise some restraint and i think paul ryan's plan seems to be a good idea. >> reporter: what is your reaction? >> really? that was the best he could do? >> reporter: i voted for obama last time and i was very disappointed in how things have gone. it is definitely moving me to the romney side. >> reporter: ryan is the architect of the gop's budget proposal, often referred to as ryan's plan. it includes deep cuts and has garnered controversy over the plan to overhaul medicare. >> the democrats are writing attack ads. the attack ads are going to be this man is going to kick grandma into the street.

i think there is some truth to those campaigns by the way. ryan's plan is a radical plan. but paul ryan can sell radical change in medicare with a warm midwestern smile. >> i think we need to take some austerity measures. >> reporter: in arlington sue rae chin, 9news now. romney's announcement didn't exactly go off without a hitch this morning. to announce his running mate, romney gave the wisconsin congressman a promotion before correcting his mistake. >> join me in welcoming the next president of the united states, paul ryan. every now and then i'm known to make a mistake. did i not make a mistake with this guy, but i can tell you this, he is going to be the next vice president of the united states. >> reporter: romney and ryan

mate underscores his commitment to the quote budget busting tax cuts for the wealthy. paul ryan's budget proposals will turn medicare into a voucher system and guilt education programs. as for the president himself. president obama flew to his hometown of chicago this afternoon. tomorrow he will be on the campaign trail attending a $40,000 a ticket round table in downtown chicago, followed by several other campaign fundraisers, including one at his own home in chicago. on monday the president kicks off a tree day campaign bus tour in council bluffs, iowa. you can stay updated with all the campaign news on our website wusa9.com. a man's body has been found in the potomac river. a fisherman made the discovery near river road and edwards

ferry road. montgomery county fire and rescue teams recovered the body from the water. how the man died is still a mystery tonight. the potomac river can be a dangerous and unforgiving place. two weeks ago i was here because i work a lot along the canal. a couple of fishermen were coming in and they found the body. >> obviously the potomac river can be very treacherous and dangerous. we will do our best to identify him as quick as possible for the comfort of the family. >> reporter: the body has been taken to determine the exact cause of death. back to school shoppers will catch a tax break in maryland, starting tomorrow. we are going to have the details. also overseas this weekend, the death toll climbing, after an earthquake. and bruce, the weekend

more than 1300 are injured after an earthquake shook the northwestern part of the country. the quake had a magnitude of 6.2, followed by three aftershocks. iran state television reports four villages were destroyed, more than 60 villages were heavily damaged. a woman is lucky to be alive today after a bizarre lightning strike. investigators hit a tree in her yard, traveled through the dirt and all the way to her house. you can see the path the lightning took in fox bro, massachusetts. tomorrow marks the tax free shopping start in maryland. shoppers can save the 6% sales tax on clothing and school

we did see scattered showers and storms here bruce. a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings earlier today. they did expire though out toward prince george's, st. mary's. right now no severe warnings are in effect. we can see most of the activity is basically around the district and also points east. east of interstate 95. and you can see the yellows and the reds, that is for the more moderate and heavy rainfall occurring right now. i want to show you also on our other radar, we did see lightning coming up from the south. you can see we did see good storms come through just east of town, heading up toward baltimore. you can see the bay getting

good rains as well. and stormy for this evening. you can seago closer in, silver spring and also into laurel, you are getting good rain falling. upper marlboro and the bay getting wet weather, all because of a cold front slowly going through. right now you can see cloudy skies there, also a little bit of raindrops on the camera. temperatures 81 degrees, cloudy skies, dew points in the upper 60s. winds at south southeast at 9 miles per hour. currently temperatures elsewhere in the lower 80s. rain especially south and east of town cooling down into the 70s. you'll notice the humidity dropping tomorrow. you can see on the satellite radar picture, showers and storms coming up, impacting much of the eastern seaboard today. it was a beautiful day. so here's what we are expecting. some storms tonight that will be nice. again those storms will be
