for watching 9news now at 5:00 a.m. on this monday morning. i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm jessica doyle in for mike haiduk. feeling good too, rested. and howard has your weather, great yesterday afternoon. a beautiful sunday and another beautiful day today, to get the start of the week underway before we get storms on tuesday. here's a look at the day planner that monday morning, we have a lot of areas that are in the 60s right now. we are looking at 85 by noon, 88 by 5:00. high temperatures upper 80s to around 90 but the humidity level will still be in a real nice range today. see the showers and storms in illinois moving to indiana, that is what we are going to get tomorrow. still in the 50s in western maryland, and even la plata

crews are taking preventative action in hopes of avoiding another deadly tree accident. >> last month a falling tree killed a northern virginia driver as he sat in traffic. good morning to you kristen. >> reporter: good morning jessica. over the next three weeks, crews are going to remove about 60 trees from the great falls area. these are trees that are dead or decaying. trees that posed a real danger to drivers. for people that live in the area you know this has been needed for some time. one month ago 64-year-old carl ross was killed when a tree fell on his car while he was driving on the georgetown pike. this tree had 98% of the roots

rotten. it was a tragic wake up call for people who live here. after the accident several residents alerted fairfax county and other officials to potentially dangerous trees. what happened is arborists came in and inspected trees all over great falls. >> they need safety as a factor here. no doubt about it. we all like those trees, but they can be a problem. >> reporter: here's a look at where the problem trees are. these are the trees that will be taken down over the next three weeks. 25 trees along liver bend road, 15 on browns will road, seven

on beach mill road, six on the georgetown pike and these are a lot of trees are very busy streets. of course there is going to be some traffic implications because of all this tree removal. i'll have more on how this is going to affect your commute. police say an argument over food led to murder. 19-year-old travis hoskins of capital heights is accused of shooting and killing his roommate. prince george's county police were called to glacier avenue. hoskins was later arrested. he has been charged with first degree murder. vandals mar a chick-fil-a restaurant in frederick, maryland. stickers promoting marriage equality and a gay pride flag were plastered on the restaurant's windows.

fingers crossed for more green arrows today. wall street hopes to keep this friday rally going. there are more indications spain is drifting toward a bailout and greece's situation may be improving. the dow stands this morning at 13207, added 42 points in trading friday. nasdaq was up two points. citigroup is out with a new plan to help keep families at risk of foreclosure in their own homes. the bank just started a rental program. it will rent out 500 homes to owners who sign over their titles. but there is a catch, citigroup won't own these homes, the test program is starting this month in six states and the deep south and the west.

demonstrated in cairo overnight, this time in support of president mohammed morsi. he ordered the retirement of top leaders who had ruled the country. the new president canceled a military order which had curbed many of his executive powers. this year people visiting the montgomery county fair are asked to take extra precautions around the pigs. that story coming up at 5:29. the nationals have a setback after becoming the first team in the majors with 70 wins. and next at 5:15, howard tells us when we most likely will see storms return in his 7-day forecast. we'll be right back.

thunderstorms around at times tomorrow, maybe even tomorrow evening. could be a couple of storms wednesday afternoon thursday looks very, very nice. the next thing we are watching this twist in the clouds here coming through chicago, maybe on the south side. down toward areas in southern illinois and toward indiana, seeing some of the thunderstorms. that disturbance is going to be here for tomorrow. today high pressure is in control. we are looking at sunshine, a few high clouds coming across the raj. so really no weather problems today. you have got outdoor plans, get it done. nothing is did going to -- nothing is going to head your way. mainly high, thin clouds will be here. tonight we could see clouds near the west virginia border.

so looking at the forecast, today good day, highs around 90 but it is not going to be humid. tonight 60s and 70s. a yellow alert day with highs again near nine and wednesday i think an isolated storm or two in the afternoon. looks like we are going to have a few more. we may change the green to yellow. thursday looks real good too. high temperature around 90. saturday is not looking so great, 83. but a much better looking sunday and 84. 5:17, here comes monika with timesaver traffic. >> reporter: there was a pretty serious accident on route 644. it is shut down in both directions between van dorn street and rose hill. and a vehicle fire. you want to be aware of that east of i-95. coming in from the west, no problems on the dulles toll

looking beautiful this morning. we have clear to partly cloudy skies. some temperatures in the low 60s. we'll get into the 9:00 hour still looking good. 76 patchy clouds at times for midday. we are going to be in the upper 80s, maybe even near 90 but without the humidity today enjoy. jessica? thanks howard. this is kind of a heartbreaker. but the nationals almost made it to a 10 game winning streak. >> and there was a record margin of victory in golf's final major of the year. dave owens has more. >> reporter: the fourth and final golf major of the season had a lot of sub plots. would tiger woods finally win a major again? weather also becoming a major issue.

heading northbound to the 14th street bridge. all lanes are open. this time we'll head over to the other side, the beltway north of town looks great between college park and bethesda. coming in from german town, this time on the beltway at river road and bethesda. we'll be back at 5:38. back to you guys. organizers of the 69th annual montgomery county agricultural fair are addressing concerns about swine flu. a strain of this flu has reappeared and sickened people from the midwest to ohio prompting some counties to ban pigs from their fairs. there are signs reminding visitors to wash their hands after touching the pigs or use hand sanitizers near the stalls. >> every animal is inspected by a veterinarian and by the owner. we feel very confident we have a very safe environment. >> reporter: two veterinarians

are on hand to check out any problems with the animals. the fair runs through this saturday, august 18th, and so far this year, reported swine flu illnesses have all been mild. today a tree cutting project gets underway in great falls, virginia. this falls an horrific accident last month. a huge, decayed tree fell on a car, killing the driver inside. knew 9news reporter kristen fisher has more. good morning. >> reporter: crews will be taking down about 60 trees over the next three weeks. these are all very big trees that pose a big threat to drivers. crews are going to be working from kwr-9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. six days a week. >> i want to go ahead and take a look, show you guys exactly

where these problem trees are so that you can watch out for them. 25 along river bend road will be removed. 15 on browns mill road. seven on beach road six on the georgetown pike, four on walker road. here's great falls resident and arborist robert vickers. >> a lot of people are saying it is about time they are doing this. because there was a lot of trees downed in the big storm, and we lost our electricity for six days. >> reporter: this isn't, of course, just about preventing power outages. it is more, right now, about safety. one month ago 64-year-old carl ross was killed when an oak tree fell on his car. after the accident a team of arborists inspected trees all over great falls and they

recommended 59 trees be removed, that is starting at 9:00 a.m. today. keep in mind more trees may need to be taken down, farther down the road. this huge tree, you can't really see it right now, but it is a tree at the intersection of walker road and georgetown pike. it is a big cre that caused a lot of residents and drivers to be nervous. for now it is not an immediate threat, not included in these 5 trees that will be taken down over the next three weeks, but a teem of -- a team of arborists will be inspecting it. a two week anticrime initiative is underway in prince george's county. police are targeting six hot spots. the two week initiative focuses on langley park, east riverdale, hillcrest heights and oxen hill.

police will try to take as many guns as possible off the streets. today maryland's house of delegates will take up the expanded gambling bill, which the senate passed friday. it will allow a sixth gambling site, expected to be national harbor. the first hurdle for the senate bill is win ago approval in the house ways and means committee. when our shelter opens, we have a line of people that have to surrender their pit bulls. >> a senate bill would create a strict liability standard for all dog owners, not just for specific dog breeds. this measure is also headed to the state house. >> it is time for another your money report. the drought gripping the country is taking a bigger toll on farmers than first thought.

the u.s. department of agriculture has dropped its projection for corn crops this year. it would be the lowest number since 1995. and the usda says that will lead to record high prices this fall. virginia high school students are learning more about personal finance and economics thanks to two digital textbooks. the state department of education developed these i books. in 2009 the board of education voted to require students to earn a credit in economics and personal finance in order to graduate. the requirement became effective with students who entered the ninth grade last year. if you shop in maryland, don't forget tax free week is underway. shoppers can save the 6% sales tax on clothing items or shoes, accessory items, jewelry, watches, and school supplies are not included.
