hayward. a deadly car accident occurred this morning involving a fairfax county police officer. the accident happened just before 3:00 a.m. at the intersection of gum street and francona road. kristen fisher has more now from the scene. >> reporter: this is all that's left of the silver infinity that crashed into a fairfax county police cruiser before bursting into flames. the driver, an adult man, was killed instantly. but somehow the officer, a seven year veteran, was still able to call for help. what happened was the fairfax county police officer was heading this way on ancona road. the driver of the silver infinity was heading this way. for whatever reason the driver swerved into the police officer's lane. the two collided head on. >> that car caught on fire. the driver of the car was pronounced dead on the screen. the officer was transported to a local hospital. >> reporter: fairfax police

closed this section of francona road for four hours. they had to clear the roadway to let the accident reconstruction team figure out what happened. what caused the driver of the infinity to veer into oncoming traffic. so far, that is still under investigation. in alexandria, kristen fisher, 9news now. now. >> so far, the driver's identity has not been released. the 5 trees slated to be cut down in the great falls area will be spared for today. crews were scheduled to begin today but we have learned the work has been pushed back until tomorrow. authorities began looking for dead and dying trees to remove after catholic ross was killed when a tree fell on him last month. prince george's county police have announced an initiative to clamp down on violence. over the weekend police began

focusing on langley park, hillcrest heights and oxen hill. the extraen forcement is expected to last about two weeks. lawmakers in annapolis are considering when to allow table games and when to approve a six gaming license. the senate approved a bill on friday by a 28-14 vote. a vote in the house of delegates could come tomorrow. there are amendments in the house which would ban political donations by casino owners and to protect the owners of maryland live and a future casino in baltimore from losses. that they might suffer if a casino opens in prince georges county. anything passed in annapolis must absolute proved in a statewide referendum this november. a -- must be approved in a statewide referendum this november. elijah cummings said there could be a tax turf war.

a republican congressman from california said the idea could come up for debate after the election in november. republican mitt romney is campaigning in florida without his new running mate, paul ryan. the wisconsin congressman is trying to rally voters in iowa. randall pinkston reports that ryan is stumping in the same battleground state where barack obama is campaigning today. >> reporter: mitt romney is talking up his new running mate to supporters in florida. >> paul ryan, a great leader. a man who has proven that he knows how to solve problems. >> reporter: the republican presidential candidate and his partner on the ticket parted ways earlier in the day. they campaigned together over the weekend to overflow crowds. president obama's senior adviser was quick to down play the buzz over the wisconsin congressman.

>> congressman ryan is a certify believe -- certifiable right wing. i saw that when john mccain appointed sarah palin as well and i don't think it worked out very well. >> reporter: paul ryan, a tea party favorite, is best know for a program that would shift medicare into a voucher program for seniors. that may be a hard sell for states like florida. ryan defended his plan during an interview on 60 minutes. >> in order to make that promise for those current seniors, like my mom, who is a florida senior, we need to reform it for the next generation. >> reporter: president obama welcomed ryan to the race and then took aim. >> he is an articulate spokesman for governor romney's vision. but it is a vision that i fundamentally disagree with. >> reporter: the president is launching a three day bus tour in iowa today where ryan is also campaigning. randall pinkston, cbs news, the

in eastern syria. the head of the united nations monitors says the violence is intense identifying and he blames both president assad's forces and rebel fighters for ignoring the polite of civilians. more than 18,000 people, including soldiers, rebels and civilians, have been killed since the start of the syrian uprising in march of 2011. london summer games ended last night with a huge bash inside the olympic stadium. american athletes are leaving the capital with plenty of gold around their necks. >> reporter: olympic athletes from around the world are flying home. they snapped photos at the airport and hung their favorite moment from the games on a memory tree. some even got hugs from actors, dressed as britain's royal guard. team usa is taking home 104

medals. the dream team delivered the 46th gold when they took down spain sunday night. but america's women brought home the most gold. and they were happy to show it off. colorado swimming star, missy franklin, loves the girl power she saw on stage. the spice girls reunited inside the olympic stadium. london's mayor danced along as london bid farewell to the games. >> reporter: there will be shops here, venues and homes on what will be called the queen elizabeth park. sisters kati and kelly meyers say they will never forget their olympic experience here. >> everyone has been so happy. volunteers have been great. >> reporter: police officers were among fans posing for photos to mark the magic of the games. some british soldiers were just happy to finally get a break. london's mayor said all great parties must come to an end.

the mayor waved to the olympic flag and promised another spectacular show in 2016. >> team usa had the most overall medals, 104. and we also had the most gold medals, we got 46. china came in second with 87 total, russia had 82 overall, great britain and germany round out the top five. coming up next, howard has the forecast. >> reporter: turned out to be a very nice lunch hour out here, temperatures rising into the low to mid-80s currently. we have some problems coming not too far from now. the allergy update, it is not the tree pollen, that is absent, but the grass pollen and mold spores are all moderate. a couple of chances for rain coming up this week. just ahead.

hayward.com and you are going to crack up. hey it is a beautiful day to be by the pool. we have temperatures toward the 90-degree mark and humidity levels are in a decent spot right now. here's a look at the day planner. temperatures will be climbing into the upper 80s, even pubbing 90 before the afternoon is out. winds will turn to the south at 5 to 10 miles per hour. boy it is going to be a nice one. 86 at 7:00 p.m. and by 9:00, we are down to 82. you may want to have dinner on the deck or your porch. got a hundred -- couple of high clouds. parts of western kentucky, so lots of sunshine, up to 84 in town, still upper 70s to near 80s in the cumberland valley. it was certainly very lovely with la plata at 85.

as you look outside at our michael and son camera, just a few fair weather puffy clouds. at this hour, officially reagan national 84. a light south southeast wind at 3 miles per hour. we had a great afternoon yesterday. we are taking that one more day today. a nice monday on our weather headline. in fact by tomorrow morning, you may be waking up to a few showers. thunderstorms will linger into wednesday as well. another system will be late friday into saturday. the bigger picture you'll look out to the west. western kentucky down into louisiana and mississippi, headed toward alabama, but the storm system up here, this is going to be moving off toward the east and is going to bring in more clouds and more moisture. here is the futurecast.

no real problems today, here we are at 5:15. we'll take it up to tomorrow morning. i noticed some moisture tracking over us. expect a few showers around for the morning rush hour. a little break and then boom, scattered showers and thunderstorms through tuesday evening as well. things will settle down. things are still to the west and has to creep east. wednesday morning we may be dealing with a few more of these with the daytime heating. forecast tonight 73. upper 60s in the suburbs. not as cool and delightful, partly sunny tomorrow, scattered thunderstorm. if we get more activity we may hold in the upper 80s. if it looks like a few more storms on wednesday that may be changed at 5:00.
