. hello and thank you for joining us. i'm jc hayward. well, after an epic special session in annapolis, governor martin o'malley has just signed the expanded gambling bill. it could bring a casino to the national harbor. it would also allow table games at all casinos in the state. kristin fisher has more now from national harbor. it's been a very busy 24

hours up in annapolis. the house of delegates voted just before midnight. the senate didn't vote till around 1:00 in the morning. then governor martin o'malley signed the bill just two hours ago. now the future of a casino here at national harbor is in the hands of maryland voters. governor martin o'malley signs the bill that could bring a casino just a few miles away from the nation's capital. >> this bill allows us to create 2300 jobs throughout our state. >> reporter: especially n prince george's county. county executive rushern baker called it a win-win for his constituents. >> what i said to voters is it's the opportunity to have $40 million, $50 million additional revenue to come into prince george's county and spur economic development. i think they'll look at that and make a decision to go forward with this. >> reporter: to other big provisions in the -- two other big provisions in the bill, table games with live dealers

would now be allowed at all state casinos and reduce tax rates for two of the state's casinos. the last provision is designed to offset the economic impact of a new casino at national harbor, but opponents of the bill like the state's comptroller say tax cuts for 25% or more for casino operators is the most aggressive public policy i've seen in 25 years in public life. is it a step in the right direction? now it's up to the voters. in prince george's county, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> the proposal will now be on the ballot in november, and that will allow maryland citizens to have the final say. crews in cecil county, maryland are offloading 9,000 gallons of propane from a tanker that crashed in port deposit. the vehicle lost its brakes coming down a hill yesterday and slammed into a condominum complex. police evacuated several blocks around the crash site and some residents are still out of

their homes. the driver of the tanker is being treated at a hospital in delaware. police are looking for the suspect responsible for a murder in forestville, maryland. authorities were called to the 6100 block of surrey square lane around 2:00 a.m. they found a 22-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound. police say the gunman fled the apartment after an apparent struggle. the victim has been described as the promoter of a local go go band, the tcb total control band. let's turn our attention now to the campaign trail where the rhetoric is heating up. president barack obama is due back in washington tonight after a long campaign trip through iowa. both sides of the contest are trading barbs, including controversial comments from vice president joe biden in virginia. randall pinkston has more. >> reporter: mitt romney had some harp words for president obama on cbs this morning. >> the president seems to be

running just to hang on to power. i think he whether do anything in his power to try and get reelected. >> reporter: the republican presidential candidate is taking issue with remarks vice president joe biden made to supporters in viinia tuesday. >> the comments of this nature sink the white house just a little lower. >> reporter: the vice president was talking about romney's plans to roll back wall street regulations to an audience that included hundreds of african- americans. >> unchain wall street. they are going to put you all back in chains. >> reporter: he elaborated on his statement. >> the last time these guns unshackled the economy, to use their term, they put the middle class in shackles. >> reporter: the obama campaign did not apologize for biden's remarks. instead calling romney's comments unhinged and accusing his campaign supporters of running misleading ads. the president is back on the campaign trail in iowa toy. tuesday he took aim at governor romney's tax plan. >> we do not need more tax cuts

for the wealthiest americans. we need to get tax relief to working families who are trying to raise their kids. >> reporter: romney calls the president's language divisive. >> it's designed to bring a sense of jealousy and anger. >> reporter: romney is heading south for two fund-raisers today. randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. >> first lady michele obama is scheduled to join the the president in iowa today. tonight's power ball lottery jackpot is at 320 -- $320 million. your odds of matching all six numbers correctly are more than 175 million to one. come on down. the game show "the price is right" is looking for its first male model. for nearly 40 years the prizes have almost always displayed by women but now cbs says it is going to audition for a male

model. a casting call is going to be held in los angeles where male contestants will be judged on qualities such as verbal skills, posing, and the ability to showcase a product. coming up on 9news now at noon, the stars come out for a final farewell for composer marvin hamlisch. >> plus, two jets on one runway arrive at the same place at the same time. we'll have details when we come back.

a mishap at the national international airport created quite a scene. an accident involving to private planes, one on top of the other, caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage. luckily there were no injuries. the larger plane was being towed when the toe bar -- tow bar broke and that set the -- sent the jet over the smaller jet. singer george jones is being treated at a national hospital. his publicist says the 79-year- old singer went in for a checkup and doctors decided to keep him overnight. george jones was inducted into the country music hall of fame in 1992. he is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. former president bill clinton was among those at a packed house saying goodbye to

composer marvin hamlisch. hazel sanchez has more on the farewell to that music legend. >> reporter: hundreds of admirers, friends and famous faces were drawn to congregation emmanuel on manhattan's east side to say goodbye to music legend marvin hamlisch. >> he's going to be truly missed but the songs always go on. he was wonderful. >> joyful, loved what he did, married to his work, and a good old friend. >> reporter: hamlisch died last week at the age of 68 after decades composing and arranging hundreds of songs for musicals and movies, like "a chorus line." ♪ you'll never be lonely >> reporter: and "the sting." >> i think the shows will last into time and the songs will last forever. he was a genius.

>> reporter: a choir made up of 600 of hamlisch's closest colleagues paid tribute to the legendary songwriter by performing "the way we were." >> one of the voices singing his music, i don't think i've ever sang with more feeling in my life. we all just tried not to cry. >> reporter: surrounded by hamlisch's music -- [indiscernible] -- terry spoke proudly of her beloved husband as the people's composer. president bill clinton called a good hearted, humble and hill layer rouse jean -- hilarious genius. >> i wanted to do so much more with them. that's my sadness. >> he was such a special, caring person. >> reporter: marvin hamlisch finished the last movement of his life symphony as he did every performance, with a full house. clearly nobody did it better. he and his talent will be missed. on the east side, hazel

sanchez, cbs 2 news. >> marvin hamlisch was the pops conductor and a half dozen symphony orchestras, including the national symphony orchestra here in washington, d.c. we have breaking news from northwest washington. a security guard has been shot at the headquarters of the family research council. it's a conservative christian lobbying group. we've been told that the guard was shot in the arm so he is expected to be okay. the f.b.i. is on the scene. also d.c. police are there. and one person is in custody. we'll have more details on this story throughout the day on our website wusa9.com. and of course on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. when we come back, another legend is being remembered in washington. julia child. we'll have details just ahead.

today would have been julia

child's 100th birthday. the occasion is being celebrated by foodies around the world, as well as the smithsonian institution. the museum of american history contains a replica of the kitchen that child used to introduce french cuisine to the american public. recently i had an interview with author bob spitz. he's written a new book about the fascinating life of julia child. the book is called "deary." i'm one on one with bob spitz. the culinary world is about to celebrate the 100th birthday of the legend julia child. he has a new book called "dearie: the remarkable life of julia child." my goodness. this is a beautiful picture of her. >> she was 35 years old. it was taken even before we got to know her on tv. >> is that so.

she actually revolutionized the cooking world. she changed things for the american housewife. >> completely. she came along. she was a seemingly ordinary woman, had no tv training whatsoever, no media training. got the spot to be on tv. because she was on tv, she basically launched pbs. is was on julia's shoulders. she was their first tv star. >> why did do you this book? >> i think she's one of the greatest women of the 20th century. i rank julia up there with eleanor radios vels, jackie o -- roosevelt, jackie o, oprah winfrey. she changed the way we ate and the way we live. i had to see what made her tick and why we embraced her so much. >> are you a cook? >> i am a cook. my mom was a cook and not a very good one. sorry, mom. but truthfully my mom watched

julia child. and with me 6 or 7 years old at her knee and my mom became a better cook as almost every homemaker did at the time. >> we have learned a lot about julia child with the movie. what is it in this book that's new and different? >> you know, this is really the first time we've had a chance to examine her entire life from start to finish. julia wrote a memoir herself but it was only called my life in france, a small part of her life. this examines everything from her days in the oss, a spy. her life was an allout adventure. that was the thing i wanted to write this book b. it's an adventure story. there are so few adventures featuring women these days. i thought it was important to show how this great woman became a pop icon. >> you really had a love affair with julia child. >> i did. i met her in sicily in 1992. i was working over there as a journalist. someone called me and said, would you be an escort for an

older woman. i went, i don't do that kind of work. they said it's julia child. i said, i'll be right over. so for a month i did nothing but talk to julia and eat with her. that's all we did, eat and talk, italian food. >> that was memorable i'm sure. >> luckily i ran a tape recorder. >> why did you name the book dearie? >> you can see the whole interview on jchayward.com, cool stories there. let's talk weather because we do have clouds out there. we had a little more sunshine earlier. we saw maybe a couple of peeks of sun through the overcast. temperatures climbing only to the mid-80s. i don't think we'll get that much warmer than we are now. in the afternoon there will be a few showers and storms here and there. that does develop because the upper level winds are strong, we could be seeing a few strong thunderstorms. by 7:00 we'll be down to 80. still can't rule out a passing shower or storm even at 9:00 with temps back in the upper

70s. we'll be about 70 or so by tomorrow morning. clouds rolling in all morning long from west to east. again the early sunshine. now we're looking at the storms off in southern west virginia. we'll show you this on our doppler loops here. you can see the heavy stuff here. a little bit of lightning as well. the southern part of west virginia. this is tracking east. roanoke, lynchburg, i-64 area but on the northern edge of this, we're now starting to see a few showers popping in the elkins area. this is moving toward the east. we'll get more maybe in an another hour. potentially by 2:00 or so, maybe 2:30, you folks in the shenandoah valley, i-81 corridor, this stuff could be on top of you. really north of harrisonburg, even up to winchester and then this will overspread us a little later in the afternoon. temps now still being held in the mid-70s only thanks to the thicker cloud cover to our north and west and winchester up to hagerstown. to the south and east a little bit warmer. got 85 in newland. 84 reidville. easton 81. and here in washington we're in the low 80s right now. you can see on our michael &

son weather camera out in tysons corner, pretty thick cloud cover. 82 degrees. humidity 62%. here's the bigger picture. this piece of energy is coming through ken extend and west v.a. -- through kentucky and west virginia. very little going on behind it. southern illinois, indiana, that will be our weather tomorrow. tomorrow looks like a very nice day. hot, 90s but a nice day. but first we've got to get through the energy coming through in the afternoon. you'll notice the scattering of showers and storms across the region. it pops up. it pops down. i think a better chance again will be south of town. there's also the chance that some of these storms will be severe, especially east of i- 95. that's going to be the area that potentially we're talking about the damaging wind gusts or the hail and the strong storms. last night baltimore got hit very, very hard with some areas having two, three, even four inches of rain so they had flood warnings as well. as we get toward midnight,

everything is pushing away. we're in fine shape tomorrow, lots of sunshine. thursday, 7:00 a.m., it's going to be a mostly sunny day. you're living out west in western maryland, this of the higher elevations in virginia and west virginia, we may see a pop-up shower in the the afternoon. here in the metro, no problems at all on thursday. thursday night quiet. friday morning starts quiet. but friday there's a cold front. this one is across ohio early in the morning. this is going to be marching off to the east. by the afternoon hours and evening hours, it's going to be approaching us into friday night as well with some showers and storm. but friday going to be a mott day. i think -- hot day. i think potentially some areas could be close to 95. the forecast, yellow alert today for the scattered storms, 86. we will see the storms pull out tonight so tomorrow a good day, 70 in the morning. 9:00 in the afternoon. not too humid. but by friday a couple of afternoon storms return. 94 degrees. the weekend a little unsettled saturday. i think we have a few showers friday night into saturday. only 83 on saturday. sunday and monday look real
