johnson with the help of a few other people was able to grab and wrestle the gunman to the ground. >> the security guard was a hero in this case and he did an excellent job in stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building and from anyone else getting injured. >> reporter: the bustling city block was shut down for the investigation as the suspect, 28-year-old floyd corkins, of herndon was taken away in handcuffs. >> the suspect handcuffed blood on his body. >> reporter: where did you see the blood? >> it was going down the left side of his pants. >> reporter: we're told the gun corkins used was legal. he walked into the conservative family research council which lobbies against civil unions, gay marriage and abortion acquisition expense funding measures. its -- abortion access and funding measures. its president recently spoke out in support of chick-fil-a's ceo for taking a stand against gay marriage. >> no charges have been filed.

he's not been arrested. >> reporter: police won't say what corkins may have said before allegedly opening fire, but it was enough for local police to call in the fbi. the fbi has been interviewing cork did know ins throughout the day, no word on -- corkins throughout the day, no word yet on a possible motive. we do know the fbi found and towed his vehicle parked at the east shore metro station. >> we continue team coverage with ken molestina who is live at the accused gunman's home in herndon, virginia. >> reporter: we're in the 1200 block of builders road in herndon, virginia with, over my shoulder want to show you a lot of members of the media also gathering here, fbi investigators inside this house now. we're not sure if he actually lived this, but we're being told this is the corkins family home. let's show you video taken a bit ago. we saw some folks who we believe to be either relatives or family friends leaving. we tried to ask some questions and get some more information about what happened today and

republicans will force voters to show a valid photo id. democrats argue the legislation will make it harder for the elderly, disabled, poor and young adults to vote. speaking of the campaign, mitt romney now accusing president obama of waging a campaign based on division and hatred making the comment on cbs this morning. president obama's called mitt romney up hinged, but the president did not respond directly as he was wrapping up his bus tour through a key battleground state. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama joined the president on the third and final day of his bus tour through iowa. >> president barack obama. >> reporter: president obama told supporters in the battle ground state he will protect the middle class. >> four years ago i promised to cut middle class taxes and dow beak, that's what i've done. >> reporter: -- dubuque, that's what i've done. >> reporter: the president said his healthcare reforms have strengthened medicare and

argue mitt romney and his vp pick paul ryan want to turn it into a voucher program. >> their plan makes seniors pay more so they can give another tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. >> reporter: governor romney headed south wednesday to raise campaign cash, but he launched this day with a sharp critique of the president's campaign. >> the president's campaign is all about division and attack and hatred. >> reporter: the republican presidential candidate is taking issue with obama campaign ads and remarks vice president joe biden made to supporters in virginia tuesday. talking about gop plans for wall street deregulation, the vice president told a predominantly african american audience they would end up back in chains under a romney presidency. >> these personal attacks i think are demeaning to the office of the white house and the comments yesterday by the vice president i think just diminish the white house that much more. >> reporter: the obama campaign says the vice president used language similar to republicans in congress. randall pinkston, cbs news,

washington. >> while romney inferred biden's comments were racially insensitive the executive director of the virginia state naacp says he has no comments about the vice president's remarks. >> we have seen once again to the united nations to the security council to get united against terrorism. >> that was syria's deputy foreign minister. he's calling the anti- government rebels terrorists after a bomb attack in glass success earlier today. that blast blew -- in damascus. that blast blew a hole through where observers were staying. more communication for board members is the lesson virginia board president teresa sullivan says she learned after the board tried to give her the boot. sullivan resigned june 10th but was reinstated a couple weeks later. the virginia president also says she should have asked for a hearing and public vote after being told that she'd be fired. hot and hazy out there for most of us. anny hong is here from the weather center. rest of the evening shaping up okay or are there more storms?

>> it depends where you're at. around the beltway things are quiet, but out near the eastern shore we do have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect now. in fact, we are looking at a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00 tonight for st. mary's county, westmoreland. this is the lower eastern shore and northern neck. here's a look at your live doppler 9000 hd. talbot and caroline county maryland under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:00 this evening, hail associated with these storms and potentially damaging wind gusts are possible. easton, things are coming down heavy for you and we've got some hail as well where you see the magenta. that means we're probably seeing a hail core in that storm system. now we are looking at the doppler radar where we've got some lightning strikes associated with these storms. so until 10:00 tonight again south and east of town we could see pretty big storms come through. they are not going to be widespread. damage is still possible from

9000 reports tonight that former assistant penn state football coach jerry sandusky is working on his second book. his first is a memoir unfortunately titled touched, the area sandusky story. sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted on 45 child sex abuse charges and as a convicted felon, he would not be allowed to profit from writing about his crimes.

vegas style table games and casino no. 6 possibly at national harbor all one step closer to reality tonight as maryland's governor martin o'malley signed the gambling extension bill into law today, but the battle is only half over. voters will have the final say at the ballot box in november, plus some other bidders are stepping up to take the proposed casino away from the national harbor. scott broom has more on what's next from oxon hill. >> casino special interests don't want maryland taxpayers to know they're being played. >> reporter: the advertising has already been hot and heavy. >> to vote yes on national

harbor. >> these are good jobs. >> reporter: labor groups in favor, church groups opposed. >> and we are sick and tired of legislators that would try to foist the casino down our throats. >> reporter: and out of state casino owners aiming to protect their market from maryland competition with a possible interest in derailing the deal. yet at today's signing of the gambling bill governor martin o'malley seemed relieved. >> we are now able to put this issue behind us and move forward. >> reporter: well, not exactly. senate president mike miller has already complicated matters by suggesting there may be room for both national harbor and rosecroft raceway at prince george's county to share a so- called bifurcated license which would require yet another legislative battle. another group aims to redevelop the cap center in largo for a casino, a state gaming commission will decide. >> i feel good about what we're going to get. >> reporter: for his part prince george's county executive rusher baker is

firmly behind the national harbor proposal with current partner mgm and convinced voters will clear the way. >> yeah, i'm for. it. >> reporter: by voting yes in the up-- for it. >> reporter: by voting yes in the upcoming referendum. >> by having the additional revenue come into prince george's county and spur economic development, i think they'll look at that and make a decision to go forward with this. >> reporter: scott broom, 9 news now. >> bottom line from maryland, more gambling could mean more revenue for the state and, of course, the county that hosts the casinos, perhaps as much as 200 million bucks per year as well as more jobs. all that cash means every interest involved will be fighting as hard as ever running up to this referendum in november. maryland lawmakers were unable to come to terms on another controversial topic. back in april the state's highest court ruled pitbulls are an inherently dangerous breed of dog and the ruling means an animal's prior violent behavior does not have to be proven in civil lawsuits.

the failed objective this week was to address those lighten concerns. >> everybody's -- those liability concerns. >> everybody's house is gone, all my friends, neighbors, people i care about all have to remove, rebuilt, hug, shed some tears and start over. >> firefighters say they are gaining ground on a massive wildfire outside seattle. 900 people have had to leave their homes behind, dozens of other businesses and homes gone up in flames. some farmers and ranchers were forced to even leave livestock behind. the washington fire is one of dozens burning across 10 western states. >> a little rough out there weatherwise because they haven't had any rain. we've had some thunderstorms at least around here. >> yeah. we're looking at storms south and east of town. around the beltway things are quiet. we anticipate it to be quiet for you folks as you enjoy your dinner tonight. it looks like we have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for areas along the eastern shore. that severe thunderstorm watch is until 10:00 tonight which includes st. mary's county,

maryland, westmoreland county in virginia, basically the lower eastern shore and northern neck. if you look at the live doppler 9000 hd, you can see the counties on the eastern shore highlighted in yellow that is under the severe thunderstorm warning. this including now caroline county in maryland and also queen anne's, talbot county, maryland all until around 8:15 and these storms are also producing some pretty good hail, damaging wind gusts also cannot be ruled out. caroline and queen anne's and talbot counties, under a severe thunderstorm warning. we also saw storms out to the west, included lightning strikes as well, also south of us into culpeper and one more look at those storms, you can see lightning went across just south and east of annapolis and now we're looking at some of these storms -- they're slow moving, so even flash flooding is a concern. here's a look at some of the light rain in waldorf, la plata, also up through dunkirk. not all of this is hitting the

who brought you the fossil fuels. alfred from new carrollton says people need to get over some of that enthusiasm for so-called renewables. why is it so difficult for the average citizen to realize that america's primary energy source will be fossil fuels? solid, liquid and gas, for the next generation and that wind and solar will not be economically competitive for about the same length of time? the history of the last two centuries of energy sources should tell them that. well, alfred, perhaps it should, but does that mean the president's wrong to crank up investments in wind and solar, et cetera? i'm pretty happy that we do keep finding new ways to keep ourselves supplied with gas and oil because as you point out, we really couldn't do without them right now, but when that next generation gets here, they'll be just as dependent as we are unless we keep on working on it right now. hopefully you'll start working on your e-mails to mcginty's mailbag right now. the address is open 24 hours a day, mailbag@wusa9.com. please don't forget to include
