and the security guard was a hero in this case, and he did an excellent job. >> that security guard shot in the arm before taking down a gunman this morning in northwest d.c. that security guard on the mend tonight. the alleged shooter in custody. >> the fbi says at least for now he is being held on a

charge of assault with a deadly weapon. it all went down this morning in the lobby of a conservative advocacy group. the security guard, despite his gunshot wound, wrestled the shooter to the ground. >> did he an excellent job in stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building and from anyone else getting injured. >> we're told the gun recovered at the scene was purchased legally. fbi agents have been searching the suspect's home all day and through the night. investigators are keeping tight- lipped about what, if anything, that search is turning up. our ken molestina is live in herndon where the investigation is going on right now. >> reporter: that's right. an fbi investigator is inside this house right now speaking to the corkins family. by all accounts this is a very quiet family, a group of people who keep to themselves, according to neighbors, but

today this house has become the target of a very serious fbi investigation. neighbors who say they know the corkins family say this woman is the suspect's mother. she didn't say anything and refused to answer any questions as she was escorted to her car by an fbi agent. >> reporter: any message you would like to get out about your family, ma'am? investigators spent hours inside the house hoping to get more information on floyd corkins, the man suspected of the shooting. from what we've been able to dig up corkins doesn't seem to have much of a criminal past. we know he volunteered at the d.c. center for lgbt community, a gay rights advocacy group. >> i never had a problem with him. i don't know him personally. i've spoken to her husband or son, whoever came out of that house, and he was just as nice. >> reporter: the family is described as being low key, and many of these folks don't seem to know much about the suspected gunman.

>> i don't know. i can't imagine anything really going on. they're a nice family. >> girl scout troops and boy scout troops, and now apparently we have somebody on the news. >> reporter: back out live here i can tell that you fbi investigators have been here for at least five hours. they've been here throughout the evening. we've seen a couple of the agent coming in and out of the house. what exactly they're looking for we don't know. the f biis being very tight lipped. we know they're still here and still talking to people inside. of course, there's a lot more to learn in this story and more than likely we'll find those details out tomorrow. for now live at herndon, ken molestina. >> a guilty verdict tonight in the trial of the man accused of murdering his own 12-year-old stepdaughter. the jury found 43-year-old david hang guilty of first- degree this afternoon. jessica nguyen was found stabbed to death in her family's basement. prosecutors say hang was

involved in a sham marriage with nguyen's mother. hundreds of people lined up at langley park to stay in the united states legally. a new national immigration policy took effect today meant to give those who came to this country as children illegally a chance to continue the life they started. but as reporter edward lawrence plains, this plan is not without its critics. >> reporter: they were waiting for the opportunity for an opportunity. hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants stood in lines across the country wednesday hoping to continue the lives they started in america. they were applying for a new immigration status allowing them to work or continue their education in the u.s. without fear of deportation. it's not a path to credit acceptship but for this person it's a charns. >> i've been raised here and i can't go back to my country because i don't know my country. this is the country that i was

raised in. this is my country. and i'm facing no future. >> reporter: these young people here in los angeles are turning in their paperwork saying they've met all the requirements. illegal immigrants can apply if they are younger than age 31, came to the u.s. before they turned 16, are in school, graduated, or served in the military, and have no criminal record. president obama announced the program in june, prompting critics to call at political play for the hispanic vote. dan stein is with the immigration reform group "fair. program costs $465. you have to have proof of identity and eligibility. out on the campaign trail, the august heat might be getting under the skin of the candidates. both president obama and republican challenger mitt romney were out among suspected voters. a lot of the stump speeches complained about all the money pouring into the other gay's campaign. here's president obama in iowa. >> these folks on the other side, they're just writing $10 million checks. governor romney obviously has got more friends than i do that can write $10 million checks. >> for his part romney today accused the obama-biden ticket of using campaign money to fund some particularly angry ads.

on and following since early this year. the owner of town square market in northwest d.c. today faced a hearing to determine whether he would be able to keep his liquor license. that proceeding at an brarks d.c.'s alcohol control board, came after richard kim was convicted of selling alcohol to a minor. the chair of the board showed the evidence of multiple sales to minors and a detective testified town square mark was a feeding frenzy for teenagers who wanted to buy booze. through a translator kim told the board this would never happen again. abra will now deliberate behind closed doors. in maryland gamblers are one big step closer to seeing las vegas-style table games and casino number six, possibly at the national harbor. governor o'malley signed the bill today. legislation approved by lawmakers during this week's special session. now it's up to the voters statewide on whether to approve all this. they will see the matter on the

reading raise minimum wage danced around hooting and hollering in the face of customers. they say that people just can't live on $7.25 an hour. we're told the group gave away $2,000 to the restaurant's minimum wage employees. and that's a lot of them. there is a growing security threat called smishing. >> reporter: criminals are a persistent bunch, always finding new ways to run scams. one of the latest you need to know about, smishing. >> i don't know anything about smishing. >> i've heard of phishing, but not smishing. >> the two are similar. >> smishing is phishing using sms to do a call to action. >> reporter: across north america, europe, and the u.k., 30 million smishing messages are sent every day.

south of us out toward the eastern shore and the coast but it is much quieter out there. wrong camera. ignore that picture. that's from earlier. temperature now 78 degrees. clear skies, dew points in the 60s. tomorrow dew points will fall into the 50s. upper 70s right now. mid-60s in gaithersburg and winchester. culpeper, you have cooled down to 64. pax risks 74 degrees. satellite radar showing us we saw most of the storms south of us as promised. richmond, you got a couple of tornado warnings but around the d.c. area mostly cloudy skies. they did look threatening at times but around the beltway things are pretty quiet. so dry morning commute. don't forget your sunglasses. less humid for thursday that will feel nice. friday starts out sunny, then we do see some afternoon and evening storms arriving as a cold front approaches once again. i think some of those storms on friday have the potential to become strong to severe.

while most are looking ahead to the postseason and wondering whether or not stephen strasburg will still be a part of the nationals rotation, manager davy johnson said he's just focused on today and tomorrow. getting the best out of his ace while he can. well, today he got six more solid innings. a matinee rubber match in san francisco. we'll pick this one up in the top of the 3rd. game tied until danny espinosa rockets one to the deepest part of the park. that's his 13th of the year. nats take a 4-2 lead. strasburg helped to keep it that way. he gave up just four hits. nats take this one 6-4. friday could mark the return of shortstop ian desmond. with a day off tomorrow desmond is expected to play a simulated game with hopes of getting in

the lineup for the mets. desmond has been on the d.l. since july 22nd. orioles going for their second straight against boston. they were held hitless through five innings but down 2-0. they rallied back with a five-run 6th inning. orioles beat the red sox going for the sweep tomorrow. for the first time in major league baseball history three pitchers have thrown a perfect game in one season. the latest coming from seattle's felix hernandez. king felix was exactly that today, livering a perfect game this afternoon, complete with 12 strikeouts against the tampa bay rays. it's the first ever perfect game in the mariners' franchise. since the end of last season, 25 players have left the university of maryland football program to play for other schools. that left some gaping holes in the terps' roster. now an injury has created

another void. quarterback c.j. brown who finished last season as the starter will miss the entire 2012 season after tearing his acl. a big blow to the terps' hopes of improving on a two-win season. brown started just five games but in that time wracked up the second most yards in a season. the skins on the other hand obviously set at quarterback but there are several other position battles that will play out. this weekend should be a more exciting game as the starters will get to see more playing time but the skins are confident in the talent they have. >> we're working hard every day. we've got a lot of young talent, and we're excited. >> we know we're really good, and every play we know we can dominate. we've just got to go out and do it night. really think we're gelling a lot. the chemistry is there, the camaraderie.
