i can't imagine really anything going on. they're a nice family. >> we have girl scout troops and boy scout troops and now apparently we have somebody on the news. >> reporter: f.b.i. agents spent more than six hours here coming in and out of this house and investigating, talking to folks inside, talking to the family. what exactly they found if anything we still don't know. the f.b.i. still has a lot of information. we'll have details to get out as it relates to this case. members of the transgender community plan to protest outside d.c. mayor vincent gray's office later this morning. they say despite antidiscrimination laws, transgendered individuals still have a hard time finding a place to work and live. a spokesperson tells 9news that terrible things are happening to transgender people because of a lack of housing that leaves them vulnerable. protesters taking a stand against the federal minimum wage stormed an outback steakhouse in oxon hill, maryland last night. dozens of people with t-shirts

that read "raise minimum wage" danced around and hooted and hollered in the faces of customers. they say people just can't live on $7.25 an hour. we're told the group also gave away $2,000 to the restaurant's minimum wage workers. well, it's up to the voters now to see if blackjack, roulette and other casino games will be allowed in maryland in addition to the computer gambling games that are already in place. after years of debate, governor martin o'malley signed a measure to expand gambling in the state. now the voters will get the issue on the ballot coming up in november. prince george's county voters must specifically sign off on a casino, a new one to be built in their county which would likely go at national harbor. >> the opportunity to have $40 million to $60 million additional revenue to come into prince george's county and spur economic development, i think they'll look at that and make a decision to go forward with this. >> the gambling bill will also allow gambling machines at

veteran halls statewide and prohibit people from using welfare cards at casinos. we turn to campaign 2012 now. it appears vice presidential candidates are getting all the attention lately. >> susan mcginnis shows us why and how the attention could affect who wins in november. >> reporter: whether paul ryan will help or hurt mitt romney's chances of winning the white house remains to be scene, -- to be seen but one thing is for certain. romney's choice for running mate has put medicare as a top issue. >> we need this debate and we will win this debate. >> reporter: romney and ryan claim president obama raided medicare funds to pay for the affordable care act. >> the president took $716 billion from the medicare program. he raided it to pay for obama

care. the president said ryan's plan is to use vouchers which would hurt the system. it was president obama's running mate who sparked controversy over another issue, regulation of the financial sector. it was over how vice president biden described romney's plan to regulate wall street before an audience filled with african- americans. >> they're going to put you all back in chains. >> reporter: romney said the vice president's comments are proof the obama team will do anything it can to stay in power. >> i think it's demeaning to the nation, particularly at the time we face the kinds of challenges we face. >> reporter: on wednesday president obama accident defended his -- defended his vice president. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. congressman paul ryan's budget proposals contain the same $716 billion medicare budget cap as president

obama's. however, mitt romney says his plan would restore those cuts. 9 wants you to know about teen drinking. will the owner of a town square market in d.c. get to keep his liquor license? richard kim was convicted of selling alcohol to a minor. we've been tracking this story for months. the district alcohol control board has seen the evidence. montgomery county police detectives even testified that town square market was a feeding frenzy for teenagers who wanted booze. through a translator kim told the board that sale will never happen again. now the control board is going to deliberate the case behind closed doors and it has 90 days to make its decision. well, long lines of illegal immigrants are forming across maryland now after a new national immigration policy went into effect. >> it's meant to give those who came to this country illegally a chance to say. as edward lawrence reports, some think the sweeping changes

are a bad idea. >> reporter: they were waiting for the opportunity for an opportunity. hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants stood in lines across the country wednesday hoping to continue the lives they started in america. >> write your name out here, sign. >> reporter: they were applying for a new immigration status allowing them to work or continue their education in the u.s. without fear of deportation. it's not a pass to citizenship but for giani who came here from guatemala at age 5, it's a chance. >> i can't go back to my country. i don't know my country. this is the country i was raised in. basically this is my country. i'm facing no future. >> reporter: these young people here in los angeles are turning in their paperwork saying they've met all the requirements. illegal immigrants can apply if they're younger than age 31, came to the u.s. before they turned 16, are in school, graduated or served in the military, and have no criminal record. president obama announced the program in june prompting

morning. the labor department releases its weekly jobs numbers. stocks turned in an e-mixed perform manuals. the dow stands at 13,194 after dropping 7 points in trading. nasdaq, big winner on the day. check that out. up 14 points. s&p 500 was better by one and a half. it is cash-in day for facebook stockholders who want to dump their shares. top executives and some early investors are allowed to sell because the lockout period ends today. if they decide to sell, nearly two bill more shares could hit the market. that could send facebook stock even lower. already down more than 40% since its may market debut. swedish maker volvo is adding 50 jobs in hagerstown with the opening of a new $8 million assembly line. a ribbon cutting ceremony is slated for later this afternoon. the factory will produce transmissions for volvo's line of trucks and buses.

morning. of course that means we're looking forward to the weekend. you say a front will be ahead of us going towards the front. >> we'll be on the northern side of the front which means the cooler side of the front. the only question mark we have is if the front doesn't get far enough south, will it throw a few more clouds and shower our way over the weekend. we're talking about temperatures potentially only in the low 80s for highs as opposed to the 90s. i think that's a pretty fair trade-off. no issues whatsoever weather wise. humidity levels have dropped. temperatures will be nice. 85 by noon but it will be a comfy 85. sunshine, northwest wind 5s to 10 miles an hour. -- winds 5 to 10 miles an hour. we'll see highs near the 90- degree mark with a 4:00 p.m. temperature 89. got plans this evening, that will be fine as well. 85 degrees. maybe a good night just to eat on the patio or your back deck. 63 degrees in gaithersburg this morning with 59 in cumberland. culpeper 63. had some storms in culpeper down toward fredricksburg

yesterday. quiet this morning at the patuxent river naval air station. 71. a 68 coming up from bowie as well. clear skies out there on our michael & son camera, 72. drier air. the dew point in the low 60s and relative humidity 75%. want to show you national temperatures. you can pick out this front pretty easily. you see the warmth shooting up here into southern wisconsin. chicago 76. kansas city 80. behind the front we dip into the 60s in minneapolis. 50s in bismarck and even a few 40s in montana. so some cooler air working its way in. behind this storm system, you can see the twist in the clouds, this comma shape coming across southern canada with the trailing cold front now through iowa, going through areas of nebraska, kansas. this continues to march south and east. ahead of it, though, well, we're going to be on the warm side of things. today not bad behind the system that went through yesterday. northwesterly winds today. goes southwesterly tonight and tomorrow. that will bring in a little bit

of hot weather tomorrow. tomorrow we shoot to the 90 to 95-range out ahead of the front. today, look at this. quiet on the future cast. maybe a stray sprinkle at the ridgetops out west. that's it. quiet tonight. here we go tomorrow morning. 6:00 a.m. winds turning to the southwest overnight. there's the front to our north and west. we'll bring that front toward us. we get toward lunch time, we're still okay. going to be out in western maryland, pennsylvania. midday tomorrow we could start to run into a few showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. check out the future cast tomorrow as we approach the 5:00 p.m. hour. north and west of d.c. approaching hagerstown and winchester, potentially some strong thunderstorms there coming through in the evening hours. midnight. so we still have some showers around. tomorrow night you have plans, date night or something, that could be a little wet here in the metro. try to push the front south of us saturday morning. but with the front nearby, we can't rule out a stray shower. over toward the beaches, we potentially could be having

lingering clouds and showers. here's a look at the forecast. today a green day. 90 degrees, hot but not humid. yellow alert tomorrow for potentially some strong afternoon storms, 94. a few morning showers saturday. right now i'm going to keep it yellow. if it looks like the front will push through maybe later today, anny may make saturday green but we'll keep it a yellow alert for the moment. sunday slight chance of a shower, 81. early next week we're still holding on to low to mid-80s. we'll take it. 4:48. here's monika with timesaver traffic. thank you so much, howard. a couple of accidents now in virginia. one new one on the northbound side of i-95. i'm just getting word that it's near aquia harbor in the left lane. beyond that you're okay. woodbridge into springfield. then let's take a live look. i just got off the phone with virginia state police. they were telling me about this overnight accident in the southbound side of 395 on the ramp to seminary road. they tell me the investigation may still take about another hour. luckily it's on the southbound side against the rush hour flow

so it shouldn't affect traffic too much, although i do want you to give them the space they will need to deal with that. let's go back to our maps to the other side of town. no problems on 270 as you come in from fretd rick, down into -- frederick, down into clarksburg. all lanes are open. volume is light this morning. barely anyone there at route 121. i'll be back with more coming up at 4:55. back to you. maryland lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on a bill that would have overturned a ruling from the state's highest court. >> we're talking about that ruling on pit bulls declaring them inherently dangerous. in the case of a dog bite, it makes it easier to sue not only the pit bull's owner but others connected with that dog as well. we spoke with frank brancini with a group maryland votes for animals. he says because of the court ruling, it's now pit bulls who are at risk. >> in baltimore city, we're told that the shelter is taking in 20% more animals and adoptions have dropped 20%

since the court ruling. in howard county i'm told it was difficult to adopt a pit bulling before the ruling. now it's impossible. >> he also says he's hearing many dog trainers are refusing to work with the animals because of liability issues that stem from the court ruling. mobile phone users beware. >> there's a growing security threat out there called smishing. we explain what it is and how you can protect yourself. >> reporter: criminals are a persistent bunch. only finding new ways to run scams. one of the latest you need to know about? smishing. >> i don't know anything about smishing. i can't even say it right. >> no. i've heard of phishing but not smishing. >> reporter: the two are similar. smishing is an attempt to get information by impersonating companies like bank. >> it's using sms to do -- [indiscernible] >> reporter: across north america, europe and the uk, 30

million smishing messages are sent to cell phone users every day. >> the attackers think hey, people don't have filters on their phone. maybe we can send out these and people will receive them and we'll get larger numbers of people dropping their account information. >> reporter: fortunately most people know how to respond. >> i usually ignore them. sometimes i say -- they say text to stop. >> reporter: scammers keep tying to find unsuspecting individuals who will give up their information. users that send offending messages to spam. >> forward it and your cell phone provider will be alerted and will mark it. >> reporter: when in doubt call the company that supposedly sent the sms and ask if it's legitimate. we all know it has been really hot this summer, in fact one of the hottest julys ever. for people stuck at work without air conditioning, it is

brutal. >> some mechanics in oklahoma have come up with a fashionable solution and we aren't talking shorts. instead kilts, mike. the guys at o'brien automotive, a very irish place, the guys decided to go irish too while they work. they say it's much cooler than shorts but does require a little etiquette while working on the cars. >> keep your knees down and feet crossed. everybody's happy and safe then. >> you also need to be mindful of leather car seats in 100- degree weather. otherwise you'd end up with a plastered back side. they may keep the kilts around till october. maybe a dance brief will help with the blistered back side. >> i think they need to chip in for air conditioning. time for the question of the morning. the average person will do this accidentally five times in their life. >> here are the choices. is it a, run out of gas, b, run a red light, or c, lock their keys in the car?

products could be breaking down muscle tissue. researchers say it can hinder muscle contractions on the cellar -- cellular level and cause muscle failure. it can be found in mouth washes, toothpastes, even trash bags. the american careening institute based -- cleaning institute based right here in the institute say the test subjects were overdosed and the maximum concentration in hand sanitizer was recently proven safe. a breakthrough for advanced prostrate cancer patients that could significantly affect their lives. a drug blocks testosterone from stimulating prostrate cancer cells. researchers found the treatment works so well, they stopped the study early and offered the drug to patients who hadn't gotten it. >> four, five-month increase in life in the men who got the drug vary says the men who did not. >> the findings were released
