. hello and thank you for joining us. i'm jc hayward. the man accused of shooting a security guard at the family research council will appear before a judge this afternoon. floyd lee corkins is facing up to 40 years behind bars after new charges were filed this morning in u.s. district court. our christian fisher -- our kristin fisher has the latest

from the scene. >> reporter: both f.b.i. and police are calling this a security guard a hero for what he did here yesterday morning. he's still recovering after being shot in the arm. as for the shooter, we now know his name is floyd corkins. he's 28 years old from herndon, virginia. right now he's in f.b.i. custody charged with assault with attempt to kill while armed, an interstate transport of a firearm and ammunition. corkins is accused of walking into the family research council's headquarters and shooting their security guard after making some kind of negative reference about what the council does. it's a conservative christian lobbying group, against same- sex marriage and for the last six months corkins has been a volunteer at the d.c. center for the lgbt community. could this be a hate crime? an act of remember twitch? police -- of terrorism? police say they're still investigating. it could have been a whole lot worse had that security guard not tackled the gunman after

he'd been shot. >> he did an excellent job in stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building. >> reporter: f.b.i. agents spent several hours searching corkins' home in herndon. neighbors describe the family as kind, respectful, low key. >> i don't know. i can't imagine really anything going on. it's -- they're a nice family. >> reporter: as the investigation continues, corkins is expected to make his first court appearance this afternoon in just about an hour and a half at 1:30. in washington, i'm kristin fisher, 9news now. frc president tony perkins has released a statement about the condition of the security guard. he says, i was at the hospital last night when he came out of surgery. the surgery went well and when i told him his actions were heroic in protecting his colleagues, he told me that he just reacted in the way that he thought anyone at frc would have responded. yesterday the gay and lesbian alliance against defamation released a statement on behalf of 25 gay rights

groups. the motivation and circumstances behind today's tragedy are still unknown, but regardless of what emerges as the reason for the shooting, we utterly reject and condemn such violence. we wish for a swift and complete recovery for the victim of this terrible incident. traffic is moving again on i-395 after a violent crash that occurred early this morning. virginia state police say the one person was killed and three others injured around 2:40 a.m. the single-car crash happened on the ramp from southbound i- 395 to westbound route 236. it took nearly six hours to clear the accident. the stepfather of a murdered 12-year-old gaithersburg girl was found equipment of first-degree murder -- guilty of first- degree murder. 43-year-old david hang stabbed jessica nguyen to death.

police found her body in the basement of the family home in may of 2011. prosecutors say that hang was involved in a sham marriage with the girl's mother and killed the girl when he had trouble getting out of the relationship. the owner of town square market may have to wait up to three months before finding out if he will get to keep his liquor license. yesterday in front of the liquor commission, a police officer testified that the d.c. market was a feeding frenzy for teenagers who wanted to buy alcohol. richard kim was convicted of selling alcohol to a minor. through a translator, kim told the board that it would never happen again. now the board will deliberate that case. members have 90 days in order to make a decision. the war of words continues on the campaign trail. the language is getting harsher as election day is getting closer. randall pinkston reports that

the vice presidential candidate paul ryan's budget proposal is at the center of the debate. >> reporter: republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan went after president obama at a campaign stop in ohio. >> president obama is running out of ideas. that's why his campaign is based on from frustration and anger. >> reporter: the wisconsin congressman also slammed the president's health care reform law. >> he raided $716 billion from medicare to pay for obama care. >> reporter: president obama says ryan's proposal to overhaul medicare would cost seniors $6,000 more a year. when mitt romney selected paul ryan as his running mate, campaign watchers said the race for the white house would begin to focus on substantive issues such as the economy and medicare but that's not exactly what's happen. >> we're going to put you all back in chains. >> reporter: remarks vice president biden made earlier this week prompted romney to accuse the democrats of running a campaign based on division

and hatred. the president responded in an interview with entertainment tonight. >> governor romney i think has had very sharp critiques of me and my policies, and that's how it should be. that's the nature of democracy. >> reporter: former democratic national chairman howard dean says these dust stops are common in the heat of a campaign. >> when somebody says something that's modestly controversial, the other people feign great indignation and huff and puff and then it goes away. >> reporter: there have been calls from both sides of the aisle for the president to replace biden on the ticket. but political watchers say that won't happen. randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. we will not see political ads on september 11 because both presidential candidates have agreed not to run campaign ads on that somber day. a group that promotes september 11 as a national day of service told the candidates that the day should be about unity and not politics and this follows

tradition. the campaigns in 2004 and 2008 did the same. volvo is bringing jobs to hagerstown. the swedish lawmaker is opening a new $8 million assembly line. it will mark the beginning of north american production of automated manual transmissions for heavy duty trucks and buses. until now, volvo produced units for the north american market in sweden and modified them in hagerstown. the company will add an additional 50 jobs to their plant. well, target is also hiring. the retailer plans to hire 400 people for its new store in merrifield, virginia. a job fair is being held today through saturday at the crowne plaza hotel on chain bridge road in mclean, virginia. the store is scheduled to open in october. some drivers suffering from sticker shock at the pump got a little bit of a relief this morning. the beltway plaza shell was the site of a gas giveaway.

the first 200 drivers between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. received $20 worth of free gas. washington, d.c. community bankers was behind this, and it's part of a nationwide campaign to educate people about the benefits of community banks and credit unions like free checking. the drivers were happy to keep a little more money in their pockets. >> the best day of my life. thank you so much. >> $20 is just like power ball to me. as high as gas is right now. >> i think any amount of free gas is a good deal at this point in time with the price of gas. >> didn't get the power ball but i... i hit the $2 million. >> reporter: why do you need free gas? >> free is free. >> that man was joking. he did not win the jackpot power ball.

wikileaks founder julian say sang -- assange has been granted asylum in ecuador. can he remain at the embassy in london indefinitely under humanitarian protection. he's trying to avoid extradition to sweden to face questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. the foreign minister says that the wikileaks founder faces a real threat of political persecution. sweden says that decision is unacceptable. united airlines is in trouble for losing a lot more than just luggage. the airline misplaced a 10-year- old girl who was flying from san francisco to a summer camp in michigan. she was supposed to catch a connecting flight in chicago, but she never made that transfer. her parents were on hold for 40 minutes before united located the child who was still in chicago. for the $100 unaccompanied

minor fee, she was supposed to have an escort at all times but no one was watching her, even after she asked for help. one travel expert explains that it's because airlines frequently outsource escort duties to outside companies. >> when you drop a child off, you think it's with a career carrier employee. that's more reassuring than knowing that your kid is going to be taken by the cheapest labor they could find to get that person to another plane. >> to add insult to injury, the family says that the airline also lost the child's luggage. united has released a statement apologizing and they say that they will refund all costs for this trip. one company is recalling a product that has caused injury to several children. >> also, out of control wildfires continue to burn through the west.

some products are be recalledded. they're made by blunt find foods have been sold in stores in maryland and virginia. the recall includes 16 ounce cup of chicken and dumpling soup with the use by date of august 24. 16 ounce cups of gazpacho soup with a used by date of september 2. 16 ounce cups of italian wedding style soup with meatballs, tomato basil with orzo, caribbean black bean and lobster bisk, all with the used by date of september 3. the soup was found to have plastic floating in it.

and it was sold under the wegmans food market label. extreme weather continues to fuel fires in the west. there are now at least 70 wildfires burning in 13 states and more than 900 firefighters trying to contain the blazes. fire crews are worried that the hotter, drier forecast over the next several days is going to hurt them. and also, there is a huge concern that the threat of lightning might occur this weekend. >> a lot of times the storms out west, they're high based, not a lot of moisture. so they get the lightning and don't get the rain and that will cause the fires. around here we'll get some rain tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night, maybe into saturday. i think today is one of the best days of the summer. it is unbelievably beautiful outside considering it's august. it's not humid. it's warm but pleasant. so i hope you are taking advantage of it at some point today because we've got some changes headed our way. here's your day planner for the rest of the afternoon. a gorgeous day ahead with temperatures running into the

looking to the southwest. a couple of puffy clouds there. mainly sunny and gorgeous. 85. dew points dipping into the 50s so the air is really drying out. humidity now at 37%. light winds. oh, it's almost perfect out there today. here's what's coming for tomorrow. notice the storms that come through chicago. they're tracking over toward detroit. just about to indianapolis and south bend headed toward ohio. they're ahead of a cold front. that cold front is going to get here tomorrow evening, tomorrow night. however, it may have a tough time pushing through us. now, this morning. if you were watching, i was saying yeah, this will get moving a little bit so saturday won't be so bad. i want to show you the futurecast. i'm a little concerned that a wave could form on the front. today no problems. tonight no problems. tomorrow morning got to hit the road early going out of town for the weekend, no problems either. here's the front in the morning. by midday, though, we're going to see some showers and storms from pennsylvania back into western maryland, maybe even starting to get close to the shenandoah valley. then during the afternoon the showers and storms start to

move toward d.c. look how little progress this area of showers and storms seems to make friday night. so the front gets hung up a little bit. a little wave may form on it. this is what this particular model is hinting at. then the moisture would be with us during the day on saturday. if this happens, not saying that this is going, it's just one computer depiction, if this guy wins out, well, then, saturday is going to be a day in the 70s, cloudy with showers. if you're going to the shore, those showers may last into saturday night. looking at the forecast, we've got temperatures today around 90, give or take a couple of degrees. beautiful. 60s and low 70s tonight. 94 tomorrow. a yellow alert day with the afternoon storm. saturday more showers, 82. much cooler. look at the weekend. even a slight chance after shower sunday, 81. then nice to start next week. temperatures still in the low 80s. hey, we're going to the kitchen. we'll see you there when 9news now at noon returns.
